I had to reset my nano (just a soft reboot). Supposedly when you do this, you do not lose your files. Wrong! Well... not completely. The files are still there if I look under the iPod in "My Computer" but, tho iTunes recognizes the iPod, there is no music contained in it through iTunes or just using the iPod itself.
Please help!! I don't know if I changed some sort of setting or if I'm screwed here. I still have the files but I was kinda hoping not to lose my playcounts/ratings/etc.Is this how you reset?
Resetting iPod
If so, you should not have lost music. Also, why did you reset the iPod?
Anyhow, is there still music on your computer in iTunes?
If the music is in your iTunes library, restore your iPod...
Restore the iPod
Then reload everything.
If the music is not on your computer, use this to get the music off of the iPod and back onto the computer. Then restore the iPod and reload everything (once you are sure that your music is on your computer)...

am unable to burn any info-photo ect on to a disk. I have a 27" I mac mid 2010 version. I put in a disk, hit burn, it runs for about 3 mins and ejects the disk sayiny there was an error with the drive and will not restart.
The optical drive has probably failed. It's a fairly common thing with these slim SuperDrives. Does it read any discs you put into it? You can try resetting the SMC and pram but I'll be surprised if it helps.
To reset the SMC
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -

Would it be worthwhile to put in a larger hard drive and boost the memory on our early 2008 iMac? We realize it is on borrowed time but we would like to squeeze a little more time out of it.
Problem description:
This iMac is running awfully slow, and freezes up often

My family put multiple devices on the icloud, and I need to know how to manage duplicate entries. Specifically contacts. If I fix the contact list on my pc will it push the info out to the other devices and maintain it correctly?
All devices signed into the same iCloud account will finish up with the same contacts. Of course if prior to joining iCloud two family members each had an entry for Uncle Fred, then you will finish up with two contact cards for Uncle Fred, and so on. If you tidy this up on your computer then the changes will propagate to everyone else.

Message: The operation can't be completed because an unexped error occurred (error code-50).
This appears when I'm copying a file to the drive and then I wasn't able to edit to my drive.
Then this morning I can't open my project file. I get this message: The project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened.
What should I do!??
I have moved my project onto 2 different external hard-drives now.Hi There,
After looking around for this error, it seems to be related to OS, we would recommend you to contact Apple support for this.
Thanks,

UEFI (unified extensible firmware interface) boot requires Global unique identifier Partition Table (GPT) as opposed to the older Master Boot Record (MBR). If your existing drive is formatted in MBR, you will need to adjust BIOS settings to enable legacy boot in order for it to work properly.
Is there a performance difference between GPT and MBR? If GPT is better, I do not mind formatting the drive with it.
5. No special drivers are needed.
Thanks. What about the thunderbolt port?
7. I think Lenovo estimates 6 hours.
Lenovo says 6 hours with the 6-cell battery on its website.

Hi,
There was a serious BIOS/UEFI problem with that SSD . Perhaps this thread will save you some headaches. Someone is recomending shutting off Rapid Boot in the setup, which would probable mean little with a SSD, anyway.
I read through this, and it looks like the problem was fixed in a BIOS update, which I plan to do. However, it also seems like Intel Rapid Start is not even worth it in the first place, as sleep consumes almost no power at all.

I have had my iMac for 55 days now and twice I had to power off/on and then It does not power up correctly. I verified my disk and found errors that could not be repaired (errors were associated with boot drive) I erased the drive and restored system back to the previous day. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with it. Allen's already recommended an Apple repair station visit. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for an onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located). BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best warranty policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

Tried running disk repair from HD recovery, not repairable. Trying to reinstall OSx Lion, says disc is locked. Do I have to erase the drive and lose everything? I also have Bootcamp installed, will boot to Windows no problem.
Hotrodmkviii,
try rebooting in Recovery mode, but when you reach the Mac OS X Utilities menu, run Terminal (from Utilities in the menu bar) instead. Inside the Terminal window, give it the following command, and then press the Return key:
diskutil list
Please include in your reply the output from that command. -
At a loss...
Highly recommended you have at lesat the incremental backups automated by Time Machine (the software). Time Machine makes backups so easy to setup and after that you ‘forget’ about backups as all tasks occur in the background, hourly by default.
If you use Time Capsule (the hardware) for your backups, you should not partition that drive. If you use a conventional external drive, you can consider partitioning it so that one volume is dedicated to Time Machine and one volume for example for other data purposes. When you have an external drive, you need to drag it to the Trash icon on the dock to eject the drive before you shutdown (or restart) the computer; this will ensure all data is physically written to the drive and buffers cleared. When you partition the external drive, ensure that both partitions are ejected before you shutdown.
The first time Time Machine runs, it does a full backup and can take quite a long time depending upon how much you are backing up. After that, it only backs up data that has changed and is usually very quick. At anytime, you can delete those backups and do a new full backup if you wish. It keeps old versions of everything you backup as long as you have space on the drive. When you are nearly out of space, Time Machine deletes the oldest versions of files until it has made enough room to continue backups. You’ll always have at least one complete image of all your data backed up assuming your backup volume is always larger than the data you wish to backup. If your backup disk is not large enough to hold everything, you can select files you do not wish to be backed up by Time Machine, for instance, you may have large video capture files from HDV tape that you do not need to backup because they are already on tape. -
I'm trying to transfer my pictures from my iPhoto library to my external hard drive. I dragged the iPhoto Library folder into the drive and after waiting a while it says "Error Code -36 The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'iPhoto Library' could not be read or written". I need to free up space asap, what should i do??
Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think? -
"The drive where windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."
Have an Envy M6-K010DX notebook. Due to an internet problem while upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1, the PC doesn't properly boot and Windows Explorer won't load. Decided to 'Refresh' the OS and went to the F11 restore utilities. When I go to the refresh utility and follow the prompts I reach a message that says, "The drive where windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I've searched support for unlocking instructions and aside from some bootrec commands (that didn't work - probably because I don't have a Win 8 disk) not much is available.
The only access I have for running commands is via the Task Manager and F11 command prompt. What is this 'locked' drive, anyway? Does anyone have any information on this?
This question was solved.
View Solution. Its hard to say if it the data is accessable or if the file system is corrupted or not.
Recuva is a free utility to recover files that are missing due to deleting or reformatting.
Not all of the data will be recoverable now but perhaps most of it is.
If Recuva cannot detect anything, I doubt a paid program will do any better.
You can plug the old drive into a sata port on a desktop PC or you can purchase a usb adapter to use on another laptop.
If you go with a USB adapter, get one thats usb 3.O if possible.
Example: for notebook drives...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812161005
