I am having the following message: This installation of Xcode 4.2.1 requires Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.  Please advise. Thanks

I've come across the same thing, and went to the Mac App Store and downloaded and installed Xcode through that.
However, it seems to have put the new Xcode.app straight into the Applications folder, whereas before (v 4.2.1) was installed in Developer\Applications\Xcode.app. In fact, it still is!
How do I uninstall everything that belongs to Xcode 4.2.1 from my system, but leaving Xcode 4.4. It seems parts of the new Xcode (4.4) have been put into the \Developer\ folder as well, so it's not obvious what I would need to delete... Can anyone shed some light on this?

I recently upgraded my OS to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and cannot open up .avi files now in Quicktime. These same files opened up with no problem prior to my upgrade.  Additionally, I had upgraded to the Pro version of Quicktime recently, but it appears I've retrograded back to the basic version, unexplainably.

My Mac has a OS X operating system. (10.6.8) How can I upgrade its system to Mountain Lion so I can then add the ICloud? Also, does the ICloud include virus protection for files already on my Mac?

You can purchase and download Mountain Lion in the App Store (in your 'Applications' folder), then just run the installer: however you should first check that Mountain Lion can indeed run on your Mac. Please see this page:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
You might also want to look at this page to see whether any vital applications will be adversely affected:
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
In particular note that PPC applications such as AppleWorks will not run on Mountain Lion since Rosetta is not included and can't be added.

The only problem that I forsee is that some have reported problems getting machine-specific builds of Lion via Internet Recovery. Not sure if it's working yet or not. But you could give it a shot, I suppose. Basically what you want to do is 'prepare your computer for resale' - just like it came out of the box. Kappy, a pretty wonderful and very knowledgeable man, has tip for that which I have copied and will paste below:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
        1.    Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
        2.    After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
        3.    Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
        4.    Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

I have replaced my hard drive on our 27" Imac and upgraded the op system to mountain lion. Once all done and collected from apple, i have found my word and ecel have expired and are requesting me to repurcahse the items. As they were purchased almost 4 yrs ago I have no idea where the original box or codes / product key / passwords are. What can I do to get around this problem. In addition my time machine only goes back as far as the op system upgrade.

Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.

  • I am wanting to upgrade my iMac to Mountain Lion... a few questions first...

    Machine Specs
    Model Name:     iMac
      Model Identifier:     iMac9,1
Processor Name:     Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:     2.66 GHz
      Number Of Processors:     1
      Total Number Of Cores:     2
      L2 Cache:     6 MB
      Memory:     4 GB
      Bus Speed:     1.07 GHz
So basically I am wanting to make sure I am compatible(pretty certain I am)
And if so, do I need to backup everything?
I have had this machine for several years, so there is much I would need to backup.
I have recently picked up a MacBook Pro, and upgraded tonight to OSX Mountain Lion, everything was fine and still here after install, incl all my programs.
There wasnt much on it so I wasnt bothered if it did get wiped.
I am basically wanting to setup my WDig 2TB Ext HD to run as my media storage and run my music player to play FROM that, to free up disc space and make my machine run better
Hopefully there's not "too much meat in the sandwich" there but hoping someone(s) can help out.

If you don't have backups, you need to make some ASAP, preferably even before you finish reading the rest of this message!  And you certainly should do so before even considering something like installing a major system upgrade.
As to compatibility, I believe that machine should be compatible, but the easiest way to find out for sure is to just try buying Mountain Lion on the App Store. If the machine isn't compatible, it won't let you, as I understand it.

  • I upgraded my imac to Mountain Lion and my iMac has been painfully slow ever since. Any ideas what might be wrong and how to fix it?

I upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion and it has been painfully slow ever since.  Any ideas on what might be happening and how to fix it?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button.
