I've tried everything (I think), and it's stil crashing
For a while now my MacBook has been crashing randomly. The screen gray's out and it tells me I need to hold the power button down and restart. I know this is a familiar problem. I know it seems to be related to Kernal Panic. I just can't seem to fix it.
Here is what I've done so far:
- Upgraded to a new hard drive (from 60GB to 500)
- Upgraded new RAM (from 2 GB to 4 GB)
- Upgraded OS X to 10.6.6 (from 10.5.4?...I think)
I've purchased Disc Warrior, Super Duper & a 2 TB external hard drive. I've partitioned the drive, cloned with SD to one partition, backed up with Time Machine to another partition and created an emergency boot drive to a third partition.
I had been getting unfixable errors using Repair Disc Permissions, but using Disc Warrior from the boot drive, I have fixed that.
I thought everything was great - until it crashed again. This time while simply closing open tabs in Firefox.
I'm kind of at a loss what to do next. I haven't formatted my drive and reinstalled OS X yet, but if I need to I will.
I do keep a MBox 2 plugged into my USB port 95% of the time if that makes any difference.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Unless your bank's website is insecure, you're fine. Go up to the Safari "Search" bar and type in Rapport. You'll be amazed. It may "work" on PCs, but definitely not Macs. And it's not needed for Macs. -
Grey Screen start - Tried EVERYTHING (I think) ...Please help?

OK, so this computer has served me well since the year 2000! But yesterday the poo hit the fan and now we got problems...
Computer: PowerBook G4, running OS X 10.3.9
Symptoms:
start up chime works
apple and wheel-thing show up
Sometimes it flashes to a blue screen for a bit
but then ends up a blank grey screen
DOES start up in Safe Mode, but upon restart - same thing - grey.
Stuff I've tried:
Safe Mode start - got rid of all login items (I left itunes and some "disk warrior starter") - reboot - still grey
reset the power management unit through the button under the keyboard (although in safe mode the date is still accurate...so...?)
when I reset that PMU i got a pink and green screen on startup, followed by flashing stripes, followed by grey.
Tried fsck single-user start - did basic check - "all files seemed to be ok"
Tried restarting with a new account - Got a flashing ? and globe/world for a bit - then grey.
---I think that is everything. I dont have any disks, or another mac to network with ....
If anyone knows of a fix, or other things I should try, I'd be VERY grateful!!
I could even use it in safe mode, but I need the internet (running from a PC card).

I would double check RAM and card etc. for loose fit.

When you tried booting to the other account it was showing that it was trying to find a Network startup. If can startup in Safe Mode see if you can go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and reselect your HD. Click the padlock to lock the preference. Then restart.

Is there any way to reinstall the os without system disks, or can i burn a system disk from the web into another computer and dvd...Then reinstall? (that's a stretch I know)
No, that is not possible. You must purchase a retail set of disks. You can find these on sites such as ebay or perhaps FastMac. Just make sure you purchase full retail install disks. Even that you are in Mexico you should be able to find disks online from resellers that will ship to you.
The one thing I didn't try is the instructions for the Blue Screen start up, as they were so long, and didnt describe my problem. But do you think that might help?
This I am not sure about, I would have to review the steps for startup to Blue Screen. You did say that the computer attempted to boot to Blue Screen for a few seconds, I believe, and then went to grey screen, so I am not sure if this would help.
And just in case, if you have any peripherals connected make sure they are disconnected when rebooting.

Hi. I have had a message each time I open Itunes. It has varied but includes the following:
Itunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn cds you must reinstall itunes.
Itunes helper not installed correctly - Error 7
Itunes is not the primary __ for CDs/DVDs. Please reinstall itunes
THE REGISTRY SETTINGS USED BY THE ITUNES DRIVERS FOR IMPORTING AND BURNING CD'S AND DVD'S ARE MISSING. THIS CAN HAPPEN AS A RESULT OF INSTALLING OTHER CD BURNING SOFTWARE. RE-INSTALL ITUNES -
I went through tons of steps that I found online including all of the steps to Fix Gear Drivers. I did the registery steps, I updated my CD & DVD drivers, I uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes, Bonjour, Quicktime and all else in the long list.
Nothing has helped. What else can be done? The message has changed as I have done all of the self-fix steps but it won't let me burn disks still and still get errors.

FYI, the step that has me add back Upperfilters causes Itunes to no longer recognize the drives so I can't do this step. I have tried everything listed.

I've had the same problem. I notice that my Superdrive justs looks at the disc for a bit and then spits it out.
When I boot from my clone of my 10.4.10 setup, I can mount and burn a CD-R in iTunes, although the names of the tracks and disc are screwed up (while the actual data is correct).
But in 10.4.11 and Leopard (also testing that on an external drive) the blank disc won't mount at all. -

I have tried several times to open Java 7 update 51 on safari and firefox and continue to get this message "your security settings have blocked a self- signed application from running" I tried enabling under my system preferences, safari preferences, firefox preferences. No luck. Please help!

ICal does not sync, tried everything (i think)
Tried resetting sync history, creating a new calendar etc, but nothing.
Even though I have 4 calendars in itunes it only says I have 1 in itunes. What is going on, everything else works great except for ical. Please someone help.I had the same problem of my iphone calendar not synching with ical. The problem was one event that did not have a title. Evidently I added an event without knowing it. My solution was to put the calendar into 'list view' and looking at all the events on the calendar from the earliest to the last event. I found an old untitled event, deleted it, and I have had no problems synching my calendar since then. Hope this helps.

Can someone please help me!? I am trying to put music on my IPod and it was working the other day. I can not get itunes to recognize my Ipod. I have tried to unistall and reinstall Itunes. I have tried all the steps on the site and can't get it to come up. I tried my IPhone which was also showing up just the other day and it also is not showing in Itunes! Please help me. I need to be able to put music on my IPod for my work.I have sorted it myself!!
Ipod is now in the top right corner, last time I clicked on it, it ejected it but by clicking on the actual ipod icon then it brings up your ipod. I restored it to factory settings and synced all my music and it now works again. Hope this can help anyone who ends up with the same problem. -
AI CS5 crashes when saving - I have tried everything including uninstalling and re-installing
At 80% of my attempts to save adobe illustrator cs5 crashes. Very rarely does the .ai file actually save, but it has on a few occasions.

Working now and again, it may be caused by some strange interference.
The full general list of things to try includes interference from specific applications in Item 7) in 5).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);

Last week for the first time in ever having zero problems with Firefox for years all I had was a black screen. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times, searched for hours for solutions, I feel like I've tried them all to no avail. Almost every troubleshooting tip says to start with the toolbar, I have no toolbar in Firefox any longer, only a clear window where I can see my desktop behind it and a black square. Interestingly enough, from memory of course, it's said something about incompatible XP but I've got Windows 7, never had XP on this computer.
Anyway, I'm using Explorer now and I don't really like it. I've really enjoyed Firefox for years and I miss it intensely. Never had a problem on my other computer, either, but it has XP and I don't use it online any longer.
Please please please don't ask me to try any troubleshooting that involves starting at the toolbar, again, I have no toolbar, literally a black screen and only the minimize and close buttons. That is all. Thank you.

in case this doesn't solve the issue or does not apply to your system, start firefox into safemode '''by pressing the shift key while the application is launching''' & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

If your device is not recognized by iTunes, I would recommend the steps in the article below. Start with the section labeled Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed > For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 > Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver.

Print too small, tried everything (I think..)
Hi
I recently installed the driver for this printer from the HP site and replaced some empty ink cartridges. So, printer now prints.
Trouble is, whatever I do in Preferences, or in Word, Acrobat, anything, the page prints too small and centred. The setting in preferences is A4
When I ask the printer to print the TEST pages, i.e the 'Self Test Diagnostic Page' and 'Print Quality Diagnositcs Page' they are both perfect and the correct size.
I am using an older version of Mac OS (10.4.....) but not had trouble before.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.Hi @migrations
If I am not mistaken, you need to increase the font size within the program you are printing from. Be sure not to increase the zoom, the font size needs to be larger for the print size to be increased.
You may also see a scale to option, or fit to page, in the print preview, this might help too.
