I've tried resetting my printer setting and nothing happens!! HELP

I have a serious problem with my MacBook reading any printers. Every printer I've hooked it up to it doesn't read. Then I got a printer for Christmas and installed it and when it gets to the part where it asks to turn the printer on and plug it into my computer (and I do all of that) it says it can't find it. My USB ports are good, I plug my camera, iPhone, and iPod into them all the time. The USB cable is good. I've tried hooking my girlfriend and my dads printer up to my laptop before and it doesn't read it. I've reset my printer settings from the printer menu and when turning it on. The only printer that ever worked on my computer was the one @ work which is hooked up through the internet so the only thing that was plugged into my computer was the internet cable and I do believe that it only worked once. Any way, at the moment I do not have money to buy the Protection Care for my laptop and I really really need to be able to print.
Can someone please please help me? Thanks!

That's really strange. I have a much older Mac and it still recognizes any printer I can throw at it, no drivers or anything.
I'm not sure what you've tried already, so excuse me if I repeat something you've already done.
1) Connect both ends of the USB cable to the printer and computer.
2) Turn on the printer
3) Go to System Preferences > Print & Fax
4) Click the little + icon underneath the printer list
5) Your printer should pop up in the resulting window
6) Select your printer, wait for the driver to load, and click add
7) That's it. You shouldn't need any drivers whatsoever
If that doesn't work, you may not have the printer services installed right. Try putting the Mac OS X disc back in, and clicking on Optional Installs. When you click the customize button, it should have a category called Printer Drivers or something. Make sure everything in there is selected. I'm not sure if you can just install them like that, you may need to boot up from the CD and upgrade again.
I hope this helps.
What make and model printer do you have? If none of the above works, this could be important. Also, have all of the other printers that you've tried been the same brand?
