I virtually always use RAW, so what is the best type of processor to use ?

At the moment I have a dual core, but converting from RAW to use Photoshop Elements is slow especially when I have hundreds of images.  Would it be better for me to upgrade from a dual core to
a quad core processor, or should I additionally buy Lightroom instead at this stage ?  I will probably do both eventually, but due to budget restraints, which would be my best first choice please ?  I will not stop using Elements
for the very best of images, because it is marvellous and I have spent five years learning its intricacies !  Your advice will be very much appreciated !

Just to clarify, you are asking the best way to transfer a backup from a mac saved on an external HDD, to a PC that is running Windows, not another mac that is running Windows?

  • What is the best type of xml storage for max performance in 9i r2

We have many schema based xml's of 1MB in xdb (9.2.0.5)
and our database is getting slower by every new xml
    delete_resource (300 sec) and create_resource (300 sec ) take a long time
and if I ftp a schema based xml out the xdb takes a long time ( 200 sec )
Our system works like this , the xml comes in (ftp) ,the xdb validates the xml and then the xml is archived and the
last step, the xml data is extracted and put in normal tables
no xml updates or xml constraints
I have now defined in the schema, one main table and I use oracle types for complextypes and xdb:defaulttable =""
in 10g I don't have problems, but our production system
are 9.2.0.5 and it takes a lot work and downtime to change that
This goes well in 9i by files smaller then 500k
what is the best schema configuration for max performance ( create / delete resource and ftp out )
    thanx edwin

    I changed
    maxOccurs="unbounded" xdb:SQLName="TRANSACTIONRANGE" xdb:SQLCollType="TPF_MASTER_D_T_RANGE_COLL_01"
    into
    maxOccurs="unbounded" xdb:SQLName="TRANSACTIONRANGE" xdb:SQLInline="false" xdb:defaultTable="TPF_MASTER_D_T_RANGE_TAB"
this gives me very good performance
the total run is now 6 times faster
and to ftp xml out of the xdb takes now 2 seconds

Hi, i`d like to buy a new battery but i want to know what is the best for my laptop.
I bought this laptop two weeks ago and my battery stopped charging (593553-001, Li-ion 4300mAh, 10.8V)
    Thank you

    Hello kolyu91,
I understand that your battery is not charging.
Since you laptop is so new, I wouldn’t spend money on a new battery.
Your laptop should still be under warranty and HP will replace the battery.
Here is a link to a number to call HP.
Let me know how everything goes.

  • What's the best type of anti-virus or spyware to use for cleaning up my MacBook Pro? I recently switched to a mac from pc, so don't know much about my computer yet.

I recently switched to a macbook pro from a pc, and am curious what type of (if any) virus protection or spyware protection to use for it.  I keep getting a message to Install MacKeeper 2012; but am not sure if it's worth paying for or not.  I'd like some advice on what would be the best protection for my computer.  Also, I recently had the new microsoft office installed; which has been having issues freezing up quite often when I use it.  I don't know if clenaing my mac would help with the Microsoft office stuff, or not (or even if that would be related)...also each time I restart my computer; all windows applications open (word, power point, excel & outlook).   obviously I'm not very tech savvy to begin with so any advice would help!  I'm hoping this computer will last me thru the next 4 years of grad school & just want to make sure this computer is well taken care of to last that long.  Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You don't need an antivirus, but don't install Mackeeper if you don't want a damaged Mac OS > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036 See > http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg/

  • What is the best I7 Intel processor to get on the Macbook Pro 15"?  Are these processors 2nd generation processors?  Does it matter?  Should I wait until - when? - for 2nd generation processors to be used?  Does the 2.5 Mh processor make a difference?

I'm about to order a MacBook Pro 15".  I wonder if the I7 processors are 2nd generation or if it matters.  Also, is there significant benefit to getting the 2.4 or 2.5 Ghz processor over the 2.2?  I'm not a gamer or graphics manipulator, but I do look at (not edit) a lot of video for my work, and I typically multi-task, having many applications and internet windows open at once. Also, I will be running Windows for work access and applications.  Of course, I have little idea what makes a difference in my use experience, except I plan to get max RAM and probably the fastest hard drive.  Any advice welcome.

    Steve,
I appreciate your focus on assistance, and thank you for your help.  Couple of follow up questions:  What you said about the new specs suggests that the MacBook Pro line has recently been upgraded with, what, the 2nd gen Intel chips, some other incremental improvements?  So maybe it has paid off to crawl along with my old mac to get the latest tech.  For these kinds of upgrades, I guess Apple doesn't advertise that they have the latest chips (I've seen PC ads touting the 2nd gen chips, and checked out the Intel site, so that's how I became aware) and all?
I'm planning to enjoy this computer for quite some years.  Of course I will get the 3 yr extended warranty.  And I was planning to get the hi res antiglare screen: that seems to be the best of the options.  It looks like one can now get a faster 750 Gb fast drive, instead of having to settle for 500 in the faster version.  The cost does add up, but my feeling was to go for broke and get the best machine I can.  So does getting the faster cpu and hd and max ram (perhaps buying third party) and all make sense, assuming I can afford it when I add everything up, or is it like a moderately good guitar player getting a top of the line guitar he can't really play well enough to warrant it?  (I remember a story about a student under Segovia arriving with a very very expensive guitar when he was still early in the learning process; it may be apocryphal, but story goes that Segovia took the guitar from the student and smashed it to smithereens.  I assume that was not just because the student mistook the instrument for skill in playing it, but perhaps also because he would be too careful with such an expensive instrument, and fail to master it.  Maybe not a perfect analogy, but I could be mislead by seeking the "best barn burner on the block" when what I need is what will work fine for my purposes.) So I think your original response was probably right on in terms of what will actually be of use to me.
    Thanks again,
    David

  • What's the best type file to export to?

Please help. I am simply making training video's and am no expert in FC. My problem is...
If i export to just straight .mov the file is Way to big. If i try to export to mpeg4 then it's way to crappy looking. isn't there some sort of medium? is there a way to export it to a nice looking file that doesn't take 20 gigs for 30 minutes of video? i have tried Divx but it doesn't work (audio is always 10seconds behind). There just doesn't seem to be an option. All i want to do is fit a 50 minute lecture on a 4.7g DVD (not actually making a dvd but just fit the video file on it). any advice?

I am simply making training video's
then you should be making interactive DVD's Export as QT not sel-contained - import to Compresssor a select 60 minute best quality then import the m2v and AC3 files into DVD studio Pro
(a 50 minute lecture is not a training video)

  • What is the best type of data structure for this type of data?

Animal --> (List of types like Mammal, Reptile, etc)
    Mammal --> (List of families)
    Etc.
So basically there is a key then a list of other keys with more items.
At first I thought a Map<String, Map<String, Map<String,...etc but the number is unknown so I'm not sure how to structure it.

I'd just use a flat Map<String,String> and stick all categories in that

  • What's the best type of RAM for a MacBook?

I'm considering buying a MacBook (Well, begging my parents to buy me a macbook:P) and would like to know if there's any one type of RAM that runs better than another. Please note that I'll only consider the RAM if it's cheaper than ordering more RAM when I order a MacBook online. If you could post a link to where it's being sold, or a price with it (I'm canadian, but if you have the price in american it would still be helpful).
    Many thanks,
    Kyle L.

I'd also reccomend the gskill ram from newegg. I bought 2 gigs of it, and the machine is blazing fast. Not a problem with it (besides initially when I hadn't pushed it in far enough, but that was easily fixed by pushing it in all the way). I think it cost $170 or so. You might be able to find somewhere else and save $5, but I've found it's hardly worth it. newegg has great prices, and I've never had a problem with them.
Good luck with the begging for a macbook, and remember to get applecare These things are too expensive to fix when they break otherwise.

Some of the decision of what drive to choose depends on whether you are going to use two drives, or just one.
I prefer at least two. One for a Time Machine backup done routinely, and another cloned image, updated periodically. If you are going to use two drives, then I think that using a bus-powered drive for both is much less risky. If this is the case, LaCie, Hitachi, Iomega, Seagate all make good drives for this. I would avoid Toshiba and Western Digital Passport drives (elements drives are OK).
If you are just using one drive, I've heard some reasonable arguments against using a bus-powered drive. But even more so, just using one drive is much more risky, IMHO. This is because you are probably going to use Time Machine, or another solution to perform "incremental" type backups. All to often, when it comes time to do a full system restore with an incremental backup, do you hear of a corruption that prevents that restoration. That is where a cloned image comes in so handy. You can use the tested clone to make the inital restoration, and then often successful in getting just those critical additions on the incremental backup to save you.
Western Digital Elements desktop drives are OK and inexpensive*. On the higher end are the LaCie, or the Hitachi/G-drive desktops.
There have been a lot written lately about Hard Drives becoming much more expensive for the next several months. It seem that certain Asian manufacturers, especially thailand, have had some serious weather isssues that have hampered capacity greatly. That LaCie Thunderbolt drive I first posted about has increased in price by $100 since that post. And I see other brands inching up their prices. This is  consideration of how fast you may want to move on this decision.
*Disclaimer: No matter what brand of external drive anyone promotes or criticizes, there are an equal number of people who will disagree. If I say I have had good luck with a brand, I have no doubt that someone will come along and say that it is the worst drive imaginable, and their favorite brand is the only way to go.

  • What is the best floppy drive to use with a G4?

What is the best type and brand, and where do I get it?  I need to transfer information created on older Macs which is all on 3.5" floppy disks.  Thanks.

You raised this same question/topic back in January (here), when you had no luck getting any response/activity from an Imation USB floppy drive connected to your G4.  Because it was speculated that your G4 didn't have enough power to run the bus-powered Imation FDD, you were advised to purchase a powered USB hub, into which the FDD could be connected.  To further complicate matters, you added "Some may be 400K disks but I think most are 800K DS/DD disks."  Grant pointed out that only Apple's (variable-speed motor) "SuperDrive" FDD was able to read/write 800K with DS-DD floppies.  This rules out the use of any USB floppy drive on the market today, because they're only compatible with 720K or 1.44 MB disks.  A Sabrent floppy drive isn't going to be any more capable than the Imation that you have tried.  For reading the 800K disks, you would be better off looking for a used PCI Power Mac (7300, 7500, 8500, 7600, 8600, 9500, 9600) for the purpose of transferring your files.  As to what you'd transfer the files, a USB PCI card and a USB flash drive would be a solution, but the Power Mac would need to be running OS 8.6 minimally.  As for reading the 400K floppies, Grant pointed out that you'd need to be running an OS version older than 8.0, which - on a PCI Power Mac - would mean 7.5x/7.6/7.6.1.  The problem with that is that a USB PCI card isn't supported under OS 7.x, so the flash drive wouldn't be an option.  You may want to check for any Mac User Groups in your area that might have the hardware to help you accomplish your desired goal.

  • I'm using Aperture for photos on my Mac, I have near 450G of raw photos and I'm running short on space, what is the best option to imrpove proformance and increase space.?

I use Aperture on my Mac and have approx 450Gigs of raw files for my photos and growing. I'm running short on space and system is starting to slow down. What are the best ooptions to improve performance and increase space space.?

important to note that what you are talking about is not a backup
It is simple to ahve your iPhoto library on an external drive -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
And you can have multiple i{Photo libraries - one can be on your internal drive and other on an external drive  --  iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  is a very helpful tool for managing multiple libraries
