I'm trying to install Windows Vista on my Mac. Do I need the Leopard disc in order to complete the installation because I don't have it.

  • Need help with boot camp.

Hi. I bought Windows Vista Home Basic today to install on my mac with boot camp. I let boot camp partition the drive with 32GB, and when I ran the Vista installer, it said that the partition needs to be formatted with NTFS. I go ahead and quit the installer, the machine reboots, but it boots from the CD. I tried holding down X and Option-Cmd-Shift-Del to no avail.
How can I just boot from the HDD instead of the optical drive?
    Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for answering, but I figured out the problem the minute after I posted. First of all, I didn't read the info 2 pages after the page I was on about boot camp (didn't know you could format it then and there), and all I had to do was press the eject key after the startup chime sounded
So now I successfully have a 50GB partition to Vista, fired up the Halo Trial, and fragged some noobz.
However I do have another problem that I need some help with, whenever I boot into vista, my internet is extremely slow. I looked up the problem and I found that I needed to install another driver called Broadcom or something, however when I double clicked on it, Vista asked me to cancel or allow (chuckles) and nothing happens. If I reset my router, however, the problems are fixed and I'm back at 10Mbps.
P.S. I didn't back up Leopard since I hardly have anything on my Mac for now as I just bought it 2 weeks ago, and it only takes an hour or so to reinstall; but I'll buy a drive for Time Machine soon. Time Machine does allow you to restore your files after a Leopard reinstall right?
    Thanks.

  • Need help with Boot Camp and Win 7

I have iMac 27" (iMac11,1) 2.8 GHz, quad core, 8MB of L3, 8GB of Memory, Boot ROM Version IM111.0034.B02 and SMC Version 1.54f36 and can't get this machine to run Windows 7 using Boot Camp.  I have successfully loaded Win 7 but when it claims to be starting I only get a black screen after initial start up.
I have checked and rechecked my software updates and have read and reread the instructions, however, I can't update my Boot Camp to 3.1 (my machine says i'm running 3.0.4) and I need 3.1 but can't load 3.1 because it is an exe file that has to be loaded into Windows after I load Windows but can't open Windows because I can't load Boot Camp 3.1.  That's my excuse anyway, so I'm missing something I just can't figure out what it is....this is where you come in!
    Thanks.

my laptop most certainly doesn't sit on a shelf. its been around the world, to far flung corners of jungles, remote islands in Thailand and never leaves my side. Its on al day working and on all night processing. infact it almost drowned with me when i was caught in a violent storm going between islands in Thailand. Naturally i put the laptop somewhere safe before saving myself from going overboard.

  • Have been reading about Boot Camp. Have old Windows98 programs. Can I still access them on my Mac.

I have been reading about Boot Camp to access Windows based programs on my Mac. I have two programs. One called Infobases by Collecters Library, and another called GospelLink, by Deseret Book Company. They are both copyrighted 1998 and use an old windows operating system. Can I access these old programs using my Mac, or do I need to use Windows98 with a different PC?

that version of Windows is too old to run in Bootcamp.  Maybe in a virtual machine such as Parallels or VmWare Fusion.

  • Help with queries about boot camp and partition, please.

Hi, I am hoping to partition my HDD. I have done this before, when I first got my macbook but got rid of it, and now I can't fully remember the do's and don'ts' of boot camp. I just need a few questions answered before I take any action.
    1. I have a 120GB HDD with about 15GB free space. If I partition the drive will I lose any data on my existing HDD?
    2. What is the minimal amount of space I can partition the drive and install Windows?
(I have a copy of Windows XP SP2, and really only need to install it for the use of one program that isn't available on the Apple operating systems.)
    3. I tried using Parallels in which Windows took up about 6GB, will it be about the same again? I uninstalled it because I found it to lag a bit.
If you can help with any of these queries I would really appreciate it, thanks!

Maybe you should first get a larger drive; you don't have much more than the minimum 10% free space that Mac OS needs.
Retry with Sun's VirtualBox. Maybe you just need more memory.
    Lose data? Step #1: backup.
You may need to backup and erase your hard drive and then restore.
I'd invest in 300GB drive though.

  • A Potential Convert Looking for Some Help with Boot Camp

I posted this in the Macbook Pro forums, and somebody directed me here. Hopefully you can help me with my questions.
    Hello,
I have been a PC user ever since I can remember. I have loved the operating system and have had a Dell Laptop for 4 years now without any problems at all. I have no qualms with the Windows Operating Systems. But, it is time for me to get a new laptop, as I will soon be heading off to college. I was thinking about getting another PC, as they are significantly cheaper than the lower-end MBP that I would get, but I was also thinking about trying out a Mac. I plan on using this laptop for most of my undergraduate education though, so I don't want to buy something and find out it isn't what I want or I can't use it. So, if you would help me, I would like to ask some questions about the lower-end Macbook Pro, and I may just end up getting one.
First things first, I am going to be going into engineering, likely mechanical or systems, at either WPI, Northeastern, or Tufts. Ah the experience of choosing colleged. I know Tufts uses AutoCAD, WPI uses SolidWorks, but I am not sure which Northeastern uses. Either way, I most certainly will be using a CAD program. I know that most CAD programs do not work on Macs, so I will likely be using Boot Camp. I have though seen on these boards that the AutoCAD licensing does not work with Boot Camp, or that some users have faced major problems with it. If this is so, then it is highly likely that I will be unable to get a Mac as that program is going to be an absolute necessity. Even if this is just a small percentage of the population, I do not want to find mine being of major issue. For those of you who have gotten it to work, how difficult was the installation, and have you had any issues with AutoCAD or the like? With this in mind, would you even suggest that I get a MBP?
Another Boot Camp question. I have read many posts on these boards discussing different partitioning options, yet I still am unsure what they all mean. I expect to use the Windows side for more than just AutoCAD. I likely will install some games on it for when I am bored, and Microsoft Office, as I do not wish to spend the extra money buying Office for Mac and I need to have the versatility of Excel that I have heard is not found in the Mac version. What is the difference between these two partitioning types, which would you recommend, and how much storage should I partition if I get a 200GB hard drive?
Yet another Boot Camp question, sorry for so many of these. My friend who has a Mac lauds it for its security, nobody makes viruses for Macs. As I will most definitively be using Windows in Boot Camp, would this compromise this security? I know it will be Windows, but I still imagine that it would be encoded somewhat differently then normal, but I could be wrong. Also, if it is possible for the Windows portion to get a virus, could that affect the Mac portion?
Also, I don't use an iPod. I suppose I always thought they were overpriced for what they do. Instead I use an Iriver Clix 2, and I love it. The only thing is, I use Windows Media Player to sync it with my library. I know many have qualms with WMP, but I personally favor it more than iTunes, but that is just me. I do not believe that you can download it for a Mac. If I were to download it for the Windows portion, I am assuming that I would have to switch to Windows in order to listen to my music then, correct? I can also add music to it via Windows Explorer. Can I do so through the "Finder"?
Finally, is the battery life any different when using Windows than when using Leopard? I will likely be using the Windows portion in the class room.
Sorry for the long-winded post, but I am certainly hoping that I can get some solid answers to make an educated decision before getting my next laptop. I would like to thank you very much for any help that you are able to give me. I do hope you can help me quickly. Thank you.

I can't answer all your questions, especially not anything having to do with CAD.
I still imagine that [Windows] would be encoded somewhat differently then normal,
No. Windows is Windows. You will need a good Windows antivirus, firewall and antispyware program. It is unlikely that a Windows virus will infect the Mac partition because, ordinarily, Windows doesn't know how to do anything with the HFS+ formatted Mac partition. However, the existence of products like MacDrive means that it is possible to teach Windows how to write to the Mac partition, so I see no reason why a virus could not be programmed to.
If I were to download it for the Windows portion, I am assuming that I would have to switch to Windows in order to listen to my music then, correct? I can also add music to it via Windows Explorer. Can I do so through the "Finder"?
    Yes. Probably/yes.
Finally, is the battery life any different when using Windows than when using Leopard?
Yes. Windows does not have the battery management that Leopard has. The battery runs down much quicker in Windows.
You didn't ask, but depending on what kind of engineering you want to study, you may be interested in, or even need to, use some flavour of Unix/Linux. On the one hand, you could always create a partition on a PC--or wipe Windows--and install Linux on the PC. That could even be a good learning experience. On the other hand, Mac OS is Unix, but preinstalled. So with a Mac, you would already have a platform for writing shell scripts, you would have Perl and Python built-in, you would have an IDE (XCode Tools) for C/C++/Objective C/Java as well as gcc and make tools already on the disks which come with the computer, and so on.

  • Help undoing Boot Camp Windows 7 install -- "no bootable device"?

I think there's some residual stuff from a Boot Camp install I need help getting rid of. Let me explain what happened so you'll understand what's wrong:
Ok so I set up Boot Camp utility to partition a 32 GB partition for Windows. I have a 250 GB hard drive, but when there were 32 GB in the Windows partition Boot Camp utility said that it would allocate 200 to Mac. I didn't really think of it, but what happened to the other 18 GB? Anyway, I tried installing Windows 7 (64 bit). After it installed, I was having trouble installing the boot camp drivers, so I decided to scrap Windows 7.
I shut down Windows and turned on the Mac, but it booted into 7. Weird. So I restarted again, this time holding the Option key, to get into Mac. I went into the Boot Camp utility and chose to restore the Mac partition and get rid of Windows. So right away it says it's done, okay. So now I check the Finder and it says I have 70 GB used, but I remember before it was 60 GB, so I wonder where that space went. And then I check iStat Pro and it says like I have 60 GB used and that the entire hard drive (including free space) is only 230 GB. Weird discrepancy, because Disk Utility shows it as 250 GB again...
So I restart the computer, thinking maybe it just needs to get its bearings. But it comes up with a black screen that says "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key," and I'm thinking WHAT? So I power it off, boot by holding Option, and it only shows Macintosh HD.
So that's my situation, Windows still seems to be on there somewhere, but Mac doesn't know it, and I don't know what to do. Right now I'm erasing free space (don't know if that will help), but if there's a solution to this PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
I made a Time Machine backup before starting this whole process (thank God) so if I'm supposed to restore that in a particular way to get my hard drive back to normal or expect some things to not be restored or something please inform me.

I "skipped" the erase free space after reading your message, but it was already partly done. When I tried turning off the Mac after doing that, it seemed to freeze before completely shutting off so I forced shut down...
(I also opened the startup disk in System Preferences and clicked on Macintosh HD, I don't know if that made any difference.)
I zapped PRAM and now it booted like normal into OS X
So I looked into it, and actually the 70 GB seems to be in order (compared to the file sizes before backup, except for maybe a 400 MB Google Earth cache that seems to appear in my user library but not in the backup...) I guess iStat Pro and Disk Inventory X must just be reading in base-2, could that be it?
Do you still recommend booting from the SL DVD to repair the drive? Does everything sound like it's perfectly back to normal, so I can feel safe about making more backups and restoring to it should something horrible happen without finding out that there's something weird and messed up with the booting or something?

  • Help with Boot Camp Drivers

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I need to know. I have been trying unsuccessfully for about a month now, and I cannot get Boot Camp drivers to work. I have consulted many guides from the internet, gone to a Mac Store for support, no help from either.
I am running on a new Macbook 13 inch with OS X 10.5.6. I have installed Windows XP with SP2 built in, and I have tried installing the drivers with the Leopard CD, with a downloaded drivers CD from a website, but it still doesn't work. I have no idea what I am doing wrong, but none of the drivers work. I see the Boot Camp Control Panel, but the only tabs it has is Power, Brightness, Restart in ..., and Remote. If anybody could help me with installing these drivers, it would be greatly appreciated.

Run Bootcamp assistant and choose to download the (correct) Win drivers for your machine on a USB drive. Then stop the Bootcamp install and go to install the drivers in Win.
    Cheers
    Simon

  • I need help with boot camp. "Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."

This message appears every time I try to partition my disk:
"Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
I verified my Macintosh HD disk on Disk utility and then tried to repair it, but I am unable to click the repair button.
It says it's not available because the startup disk is selected.
I don't know what to do or how to go about both these problems.
    Please, any suggestions?

  • Few Questions about Boot Camp...

I'm thinking about installing Windows Vista on my new MacBook but I have a few questions...
Would I be able to download software such as Halo 2 for example and run it on my Mac?
Basically, all I'm asking is, will my Mac be similar with Windows installed on it as a regularly PC? Would my Mac be a bit slower with Windows Vista installed?
    Thanks

    Yes.
Basically, all I'm asking is, will my Mac be similar with Windows installed on it as a regularly PC?
Yes, if Boot Camp is used.
Would my Mac be a bit slower with Windows Vista installed?
Not with Boot Camp. It will be if a Windows emulator such as Parallels Desktop is actively running on it.

  • About boot camp with multiple hard drives.

Hi folks. I've just ordered my new 27" iMac. It has the 256GB SSD and i'm wondering about using boot camp on the system.
I understand that OSX will come installed on the SSD, what I was wondering however, is that if I would be able to use boot camp to install windows on the standard 2TB HDD that comes with it.
Secondly, if thats possible, is it possible to switch the 'standard' system bootup from Windows to OSX as you desire?
I owned a MacBook Pro recently which had Windows 7 installed, however after I installed that, it would boot windows automatically unless I used the Alt key on startup to choose OSX instead.
What i'm worried about is that after I install Windows 7 again, that it will boot into Windows as standard, then i'll need to hold Alt and choose OSX instead, which is going to take some time, and totally cancel the benefits of having an SSD for quicker start up times.
So can you switch the standard bootup operating system once installed?
    Thanks for reading.

Yes, Boot Camp can be used on any internal drive. To alter startup behavior use the Startup Disk preferences to set your OS X volume as the permanent boot volume. When you want to boot Windows use OPTION boot - restart and after chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the Windows volume then click on the large downward pointing arrow button. When you next restart the computer it will automatically return to OS X.

  • A few questions about Boot Camp: installation, performance, which Win OS?

    Hello.
I am planning on getting a windows OS. My main motives for this are because I would like to get some PC only games (I've been eyeing that Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition that is soon to come out) and because there is a good chance that I will need some PC only programs for my college work. I just had a few questions before I did anything. Note: I am running 10.5.8 now but getting 10.6 soon.
    1. According to wikipedia: "Its functionality relies on BIOS emulation through EFI and a partition table information synchronization mechanism between GPT and MBR combined". The only word I understood of that sentence was "emulation." I know that emulation software significantly reduces performance. Is this true for boot camp? (say i were to get the exact same game for both mac and windows and set them to the exact same performance settings, when playing on windows, would there be more lag than on OS X?)
    2. Which Windows OS should I get? Since I am just going to be using Boot Camp to run games and a few other programs, would XP be the best to get to optimize the application's performance (as opposed to Win 7)?
    3. How complex is installation? I am a decent Mac techie, but this is my first time with boot camp, and I am a Windows noobie.
    4. There seems to be a lot of talk about partitions. What exactly is a partition? I have some theories, but want to know for sure.
