I want 2 xp users to share one library

My wife and I share a computer and each have a logon under XP. I have our iTunes pointing to my "shared" "my music" folder.
I have read several posts and find it hard to believe that every time one user adds a song or disc to their library, the other has to manually add that file or folder even if they are sharing the same library folder.
Post below mentions "sharing one common, identical Library database". How do I do this? Post I read is below.
It doesn't matter to which music folder location you have each User's iTunes account pointing: same directory or different directories. iTunes creates and maintains individual Library databases for each user (the 'iTunes library.itl' file), These are created and stored within the 'My Documents\My Music\iTunes' folder of each user.
As iTunes does not have an auto-scan or update feature, you need to 'Add' (as hudgie indicated), the main music folder (or individual sub-folders) within the opposite User each time you add music to the other User's Library.
Other than sharing one common, identical Library database across the two users, this is the best you can do.
Someone MUST know how to remedy this problem?

To follow up on hudgie’s answer, both users will need to run TweakUi and designate the same path and folder for their 'My Music' special folder.
Once that happens, iTunes should use the same location for the 'iTunes Library.itl' file for each user.
I would suggest creating a 'C:\Data\My Music\iTunes' folder, have each user specify that 'My Music' sub-folder as the special folder within TweakUI. iTunes should now use the 'iTunes' folder in that path to store its database file.
You can designate any folder to deposit the music files, but I would suggest 'C:\Data\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music' for consistency and ease of backup.

  • Can 2 windows users share one library?

    Hi Guys,
apologies if this has already been asked, i did do a search but couldnt find anything relevant.
I have windows xp and 2 user accounts. is there any way both acounts can share one library without imports and exports. i want to be able to upload songs in my acount but also have my wife see them in her account on windows.
    Any help is kindly appreciated.
    Thank you.

No, you have to keep dragging new music over to the account that did not import it.

  • Practical and convenient to share one library for two users, or unwise?

One iMac, two user profile logins. I've already gone through this with iTunes and with the help of the techs, have figured out the work around so that two users on one computer can share one set of music files. Without that trick, we'd be duplicating our music storage requirements.
Same problem with iPhoto. Sure, my wife and I have some photos that we would keep separately I suppose, but really.. most of what we shoot would be better shared in one location. I read in the help files that you simply move the iPhoto Library to the Users\Shared folder and then change a setting in iPhoto.
Is this practical and usable this way, or are there "gotchas" that the help file doesn't elaborate on?
Is this reliable and safe for the data? What would you guys recommend. Thanks.

    HI Rowan,
I think I read in another one of your posts about maybe moving the iPhoto Library folder to an external. If you do, this library can be shared, but the external has to be set to "ignore permissions" if two users are going to be using the same library on the external. More info on this set up can be found in the documentation page of iPhoto Library Manager.
Anyway, there is also a method using ACLs with Tiger that might work for you also.
Here are the links I have for sharing ONE iPhoto Library between users.
SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • Want 2 users on iMac to share one library.

I want to share my complete library with my wife. So when she opens iTunes from her user account, she will see the exact same songs as I do when I start iTunes from my user account.
    * But * I don't want to duplicate the mp3 files.

To move the iPhoto Library folder to a new location, quit iPhoto if it is running and then:
    1. Drag the folder to the new location. In your case, to /Users/Shared.
    2. Select the folder in the new location and choose "Make Alias" from the File menu or press command and L keys together.
    3. Drag the "iPhoto Library folder alias" to your user name/Pictures folder and rename it iPhoto Library.
    4. Login to your other users accounts and repeat step 3.

  • Share one library between Windows users

My brother and I share this computer, and would like to have one iTunes library between us. We've changed the settings so that our iTunes music folder is in the "Shared Music" folder, but it keeps putting separate libraries for both of us in our respective "My Music" folders on Windows, so we have our music in one folder and the libraries in another. I've deleted the "iTunes" subfolder in "My Music" many times, but it always comes back when I open iTunes. How can we change it so that it doesn't do this?

  • Two users, four iPods, one Library

I should qualify this by saying that I am a recent switcher. I have played with my Mac(s) some but I want to make sure I do this the right way.
My wife and I want to each have our own login to the computer so our settings and things stay independent of one another but we want to share a single iTunes Library.
In windows, this always trashed things pretty bad until we reached the point that the library was part of my login and she would login as me to manage her songs and sync her ipod.
Are we in the same boat on a Mac? What is the best way to go about setting this up?

I spoke too soon. I tried out the steps in the article and it did not work.
I copied the Music folder from my Home folder out to the Hard drive. I then set my iTunes preferences to change to this location. But then my library looks empty. If i then import they show up.
When i log in as my wife, I change her preferences to the same place but it is empty. I add the folder and the songs show up but when I import something as either user, it imports it to the home/music folder and not the new one and each user can't see the others music.
I may not be explaining it right and probably need to spend some more time working on it. But it looks like it wants to keep using the home folder location.

  • How do I share one library on two different computers?

I have a desktop G5 that has the majority of my music on it. I also have a MacBook Pro. They both have home sharing turned on. However, if I'm on the road with my MacBook Pro, I don't see a way to access the "shared" music from my home-based G5. Seems simple enough to figure out but I can't seem to get it.
I was  going to copy the iTunes folder from my G5 over to the MacBook Pro but transferring 2.4 GB is kind of a drag. Any other solutions?
    Thanks.

The iCloud service would only work if you had a wifi connection when you are traveling.  You could also use a flash drive to store your music.  Same concept.  I can see how a big hard drive would get a bit annoying, but since your iTunes library is relatively small.  You could just get a small 4GB flash drive.  That would work fine too.  That is your only option unless you want to transfer that data whenever you travel, which wouldnt be too big of a hassle really, right?  iCloud requires a Network connection to work.

  • Two installations share one library?

Ok...because Apple refuses to support XP-64 I've had to make my machine dual boot. I have iTunes 9 on both my x64 and x86 installations, though had to use some hacks to get it to work on the former. Problem is, I can't run Ipodservice.exe on x64. Now what I would like to do, is have both installations run off the same library and files. There shouldn't be any conflicts as they are both iTunes 9 and aren't going tobe accessing the same files simultaniously. How can I do most of my editing on x64 and then just use plain XP to sync iPod?

ha i just figured it out sorry

  • Can I share one iTunes Library with multiple computers on a network?

Can I share one iTunes Library with multiple computers on a network?
note: one library universally shared, not Home Sharing (one library each, shared to each.)
I want to share one library stores on my server and access it through various local computers. When I buy a song from a computer (non-server), I want it to be added to the library (stored on server). I want it to auto copy to my server, for organization. I want to be able to sync my phone from any computer.
Most of this I can do, if i figure out how to use one universal library for all my computers.
Any ideas how I can do this?

    eyeinit,
You can authorize your iTunes account on up to 5 computers at a time.
However, purchased music is downloaded to the first machine to download it, but these articles have more information on moving your music between authorized computers:

  • Can two computers share one iTunes library?

I am trying to map out a new plan for how we store and play music via iTunes at home. Currently, our music is stored on a windows PC and played via iTunes and an airport express.  I recently bought a new macbook and am considering an airport extreme with the hope that I can store the music on a hard drive attached to the airport extreme and play music from either computer.  Can the two computers share one library? I already have home sharing turned on and can access my library from the macbook, but if possible, I would prefer having the hard drive separate of the desktop.  Any reason this won't work?
    Thanks!

I periodically copy my iTunes library from my Mac Pro to the Mac Mini.
They aren't using a single library. Each computer is using its own copy and you have two sets of library files.  It can certainly be done that way but if between copy sessions you edit a bit of each library then it is a bit of a muddle trying to make sure your versions are synchronized with each other.  For example, ratings are stored only in the .itl file, so if you rate a song on your second computer it will get lost the next time you copy over from your first.

    Hi,
I currently have 2 libraries and I want to move photos from one library into the other.
How do I have to proceed?
    Thx

We're thinking of adding a library copy feature soon.  Hoping you can share some info here to help us understand how this might best work fo you.   Here's a few questions I have:
    - What do you use the 2 libraries for?
      - Why do you want to copy?
      - Do you have albums, favorites, and comments associated with the photos?  Do you want them copied?
Anything else that you are hoping to accomplish here?
    Thanks in advance,

  • HT1203 If I have two users on my Mac can I share one iTunes library without doubling my music collection.

I am just trying to figure out the best way to share my mac with my wife and sync her iphone as well.  right now i just use my account for everything but want to possibly create here a user account on the mac so that her icloud can be there with her contacts.  I then would use itunes under her account but do not want to have all my music on my hard drive twice.  I also want to add new music to my itunes and have it also show up in hers.  Is there a way to do this?

This is on a Mac? You posted in the iTunes for Windows forum.

    - Note that if you have two copies of iTunes running at the same time with any shared content, unexpected thing may happen because a library file cannot be opened by two accounts at the same time.  You're also open to any vagaries the other person will have about deleting or adding files, or making playlists, ratings, etc.

  • How do I share one Iphoto library with other User accounts on the same iMac

I have created a shared Iphoto Library. When I add this to one of the user accounts, it copies all the pictures instead of sharing the same library. The result is that it uses memory.
Is it possible to create a shared library that is shared by all the users without actually copy all the pictures to each users Iphoto library?

    Hi MikaelK,
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

To give other users read-only access to your library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support article linked below.
