• Help. I accidentally formatted by the device name not the volume name when trying fresh install osx Mountain lion.

I was trying to do a fresh instal of Mountain Lion. By fresh I mean clean.
Firstly, my iMac disc drive isn't really working to well, so I have Mountain Lion on a usb.
I started up and held the option key.
Entered into disc utility mode, and started doing everything correct.
Then near at the end I when i'm required to select a start up disc it doesnt show anything... Help?
I checked around online and saw this tutorially and notice I had done something different.
http://macs.about.com/od/MountainLion/ss/How-To-Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X- Mountain-Lion-On-A-Startup-Drive.htm
on page 2. where it says
When Disk Utility opens, select your Mac's startup volume from the list of devices. If you never changed its name, the startup volume will be listed as Macintosh HD. Be sure to select the volume name and not the device name, which will usually be the name of the physical drive, for instance, "500 GB WDC WD5."
I think I may have selected the device name. Is this the cause of my problem?
Can I fix this ? Please help?
I live in Auckland in New Zealand, I don't have any apple stores here

Ok, I realized that won't work, I don't think, because you can't enable it on your Mac.
However, if you have another Mac, you can use Firewire Target Disk Mode to install. Boot your Mac while holding down the T key. You will see a FireWire symbol on the screen. Then, connect the two with a Firewire cable. Your Mac hard drive will show up on the other. Try to install onto that.
This may not work, depending on the other Mac. If it is similar to yours, it should.
I'm not sure if you can do it the other way. If you put the DVD into the other Mac and boot it into Target Disk Mode, then boot yours holding down the option key, you may be able to select the DVD on the other Mac as the startup.
This very old article seems to indicate it will work: http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0914.html

• Do I need a Fresh Install of Mountain Lion?

Hi there! I need to do something to fix my computer but I am not sure what exactly. I could use some help from some more experienced people to I do not mess anything up.
System
2011 MacBook Air
-Mountain Lion
-Time Machine
-16 GB Flash Drive
Problems
I have a legal copy of Windows 7 and wanted to partition my HD so I could run it. I went into boot camp and it put Windows on my flash drive but when it went to partition my HD, I got the error "Files cannot be moved". I did some research on this error and discovered I need to reformat my drive. I decided the best thing to do would be a fresh install of Mountain Lion and then move my data over from Time Machine. This would fix my Boot Camp problem and free up some aditional wasted space.
Stipulations
While I have everything backed up on an external HD through Time Machine, I also have other files that are only saved on that disk. So I cannot erase my external HD and use it as a cloned drive or anything.
Solutions?
I need a fresh install of Mountain Lion and then transfer all my data from Time Machine. I have done this many times with older Macs, but I always had an install disc. What Should I do?
-thanks, Jake

Remove some files from the hard drive. Either delete files that can be deleted or move files to an external storage and then delete them from the hard drive. Then boot in to repair by holding cmd+r when the comp is starting then enter disk utility and repair your hard drive. Then boot the computer like normal. This should fix this error allowing you to go ahead and partition the drive for Windows 7.

• How do I do a fresh install of Mountain Lion on a SSD?

Hey guys, tried searching on the forums for this but I couldn't find it. Doesn't help that my internet connection has having severe issues today either!
I just bought myself a new Macbook Pro a couple of days ago and finally have the time to set it up today. It currently has the normaly 500gb hard drive in there. Now I have an SSD in my old Macbook Pro, which I will be formatting and placing into the new MBP. How would I then go about doing a fresh install of Mountain Lion without the Mountain Lion setup file? I know I can purchase it on the App store, but I shouldn't have to do that as my new MBP is of course Mountain Lion.
Any suggestions?
Thanks guys.

If it wasn't a Mac computer that originally came with either Lion or Mt Lion Pre-Installed by Apple when new you would not be able to connect to the Online Internet Recovery system. It is a Feature of the Mac EFI Firmware system. And it will only install whichever version of the Download only version of OS X that originally came on that system.
My MBP came with Lion Preinstalled. Even if I have Mt Lion installed on the hard drive the Online Internet Recovery system would always point my MBP to the Lion download as that was the original version of OS X that came on my Mac.
No real authentication needed. Since your Mac came with Mt Lion no matter what newer versionof OS X you ever install the OIRS will always point you to Mt Lion and ONLY Mt Lion.
It is something different, but not completely different, from the built in Recovery HD partition on the internal drive.
No worries as during the install of MT Lion on your SSD the installer will Recreate the Mt Lion Recovery HD partition on your SSD.

• Cannot restore files after fresh install of Mountain Lion.

I just did a fresh install of Mountain Lion. I backed up my User Folder manually using an external harddrive. Now that I'm in Mountain Lion, I cannot use the Migration Assistant, because the Drive does not appear, it just keeps spinning saying "Looking for Computers" or whatever it says. (Yes, I chose Time Machine Drive or other Drive from the list) and if I try to just overwrite my user folder by draggin the one I have on my harddrive, it says it can't be modified. So now I'm stuck and can't restore any of my old files and folders. Help!

Restart with the Command and R keys held down and install the OS from there. Click here and scroll down to or search for 'Installing OS X on an external storage device' for more information.

You're going to have to tell us why you think this is strange. Are you having problems? If so, what kinds of problems?
Note that this is NOT a fresh install of Mountain Lion, as I see Little Snitch (at least) in your process list.

• Recovery/System Restore-Fresh Install of Mountain Lion

I needed to execute a recovery... wanted to wipe all of my data and install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion. I use an apple Bluetooth keyboard however the "Command-R" functions doesn't work because the keyboard doesn't connect until the Mac until it fully reboots; by then its too late and my desktop is on the screen. The workaround was to use a wired keyboard and hold the Option (Apple Keyboard) or Alt (Windows Keyboard) button until the option came up which allowed me to choose the recovery method.
Thanks

Thanks for the tip/post, good work!

• Problem doing a fresh install of Mountain Lion on replacement blank drive

After a close call in which the internal drive on my late 2009 21.5" iMac needed repairs unexpectedly, I acquired a replacement drive (WD Black 2TB) on which I planned on starting fresh with a clean install of Mountain Lion rather than cloning the existing installation that went through so many upgrades over the past 3+ years.
I now have a perfectly bootable WD Black 2TB drive attached to the USB port of the iMac. I can boot from it, use the Recovery partition if I need to.  My contacts and Safari tabs and bookmarks are synced up through icloud.  I am even able to install traditional software.  Everything appears to work fine except.... I cannot install any application acquired from the Mac App Store.
When I go to the purchased icon of the Mac App Store, all apps show as already installed.  I read several articles suggesting holding the option key when clicking on the "Installed" button, unchecking the "automatically install applications bought on other macs" etc. to no avail.  A call to Apple Care is requiring futher research.  I am now reaching out to the community for advise.
A important hint here is that, for some reason, when I boot from my fresh ML install, that OS sees the internal drive as an extension if itself, and treats all Mac App purchases there as already installed.  Using Spotlight to find any of the apps marked as Installed invariably points to the Applications folder of the Internal drive.  I have been unable to 'disable' the internal drive or unmount it.
I would rather not swap the drives until I complete a full installation of the OS and applications and data on my new WD Black 2TB drive.  But from what I can see, this appears unavoidable.  I can't believe I am the first one to run into this situation, hence my call to this community.
Thank you for your assistance.

• How to do a fresh install of Mountain Lion after clean wipe of MacBook Pro Early 2008 version?

Hey everyone,
The following are my computer specs:
MacBook Pro
15-inch, Early 2008
Hardware
Overview
Processor
2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory
4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
L2 Cache
6 MB
Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB
Software
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
mid 2008 - I got this laptop at the online Apple Store, configured to my specs. It came with Leopard.
mid 2009 - I bought a Snow Leopard disk from the Apple Store and upgraded the OS directly over Leopard, with all my data still there.
mid 2011 - I purchased the Lion download online from the Mac App Store and upgraded the OS again, directly over Snow Leopard, with all my data still there.
mid 2012 - Now I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I have already purchased the Mountain Lion download online from the Mac App Store and downloaded it to my computer. Have also copied (i guess) all my files, bookmarks, iTunes library on to an external HD.
But I haven't installed it yet because I want to first clean wipe my computer and restore it to factory settings, to the way it was when I first got it with Leopard, because its extremely slow. Doesn't even feel like that Mac I got..
Now my problem is - I don't have the Leopard CDs that came with it, nor the iWork or iLife ones which I bought with, or the Snow Leopard one which I got later.
I also don't see Apple offering the Lion download on the App Store anymore..so, can anyone please help me out with how I can do this?
Another thing I want to mention is - I had my display replaced at the Apple Store late 2011 because of that defect which apparenly affected many MacBook Pros from that period.
So was wondering if there might be any hardware issues if I downgraded all the way down to Leopard? Because at the time of the replacement, the laptop was running Lion.
Any help is great, thanks!

1) You don't see Apple offering Lion for download from the app store anymore because you already downloaded it to your computer. Hold down the option key then click on purchases and it should appear. I don't know why they hide it after you bought it?
         Ref: http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/02/re-download-mac-os-x-lion-from-app-store/
2) Don't install Lion right after you download it from the app store! Make a copy and put it in a different directory first! I use this tutorial to make a bootable usb and a dvd for backup just in case. This will give you the "clean" install you are looking for.

• Fresh Install of Mountain Lion how do I export users from Lion Server

I've been having some issues with Lion Server, mainly Kerberos related and Profile Manager. So I want to start fresh with Mountain Lion.
I've installed ML and Server, and profile manager is working now for the first time (yay!)
Now I want to Import all my existing Open Directory users from Lion, I don't want to Import the entire OD though because I think some of my kerberos issues will just get carried over to ML.
I would like to just export the Users to a file then use ML server to import users from file, but I can't see an option to export in Lion Server, I have tried doing it from WGM on Lion but the 'users' file is not recognised by ML server

Great thanks for the reply, I'll try it tonight when everyone has logged off.
Yeah I was very pleased initially with kerberos on Lion, it worked great to start with, now I'm just getting expired tickets for a default realm when some users log in, yet other users continue to work fine.
I was planning to slowly install Mountain Lion Server and test is thouroghly but I've had a bit of a disaster that if forcing me to go live with ML server quicker than I wanted to!
Basically because on Lion Server I have all the Service Data on a separate drive, and I upgraded to ML server on a backup copy of Lion Server just to see what it was like, though now I've rebooted the original Lion drive but half of the services are now screwwed up because the ML Server must have changed them, so things like Wiki Server and Profile Manager are now broken from the Lion Server boot, they just show "Error Reading Settings"
I realise now I should have moved the Service data back to the local drive before doing a test upgrade so I wouldn't have messed it up! but now it seems like my best way forward is a fresh install of ML Server

• Unable to create a fresh install of Mountain Lion

Hi All,
I upgraded to Mountain Lion from an install of Lion on release date, all worked fine.  However, I thought it might be time to complete a fresh install.
So today, I booted into the recovery partition and erased the main OS partition to start again.  When I click to install a fresh copy, I received the message that Mountain Lion is checking with the servers to make sure I'm an authentic user (I cannot remember the exact wording).
Then, the following error appears.

This is the pic from the recovery console.

I've tried to reformat the drive again but the same error occurs.  Really frustrating. Rob.

Hi All, is nobody able to suggest anything to help here? As said, I cannot force Mountain Lion to boot to the Internet even using the Command+Option+R (Command+R only works if you have no restore partition).  In theory, the recovery from Internet should work as I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 15 2.2 but... it's not.
All said and done, I still have the recovery partition as per the screen shots in my first post so I should be able to restore Mountain Lion.  I've erased, mounted, unmounted etc but getting that same error.

• I have my new HD in a USB enclosure connected to my MacBook Pro and I want to put a fresh copy of Mountain Lion on it. But I do not have an install DVD as I got ML as a download from the App Store. What do I do?

I have my new HD in a USB enclosure connected to my MacBook Pro and I want to put a fresh copy of Mountain Lion on it. I'm told that I need to boot from the Installation Disk to start. But I do not have an install DVD as I got ML as a download from the App Store. Can I download ML from the App Store again, but this time directly to my new HD?

Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You can also use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your present setup to it and boot from it.
Most commonly used backup methods
However, SOME external enclosures are not bootable, you will soon find out.

• HT1553 I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.

I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.

Mountain Lion is only available as a download, so there is no DVD to purchase. What you can do is download ML and then stop it from installing as soon as it's on your drive. From there you can make your own bootable ML flash drive.
When your purchase and download Mountain Lion, it will end up in the Applications folder and automatically want to install. Press Command+Q to stop the install and exit. The installer will remain on the hard drive.
1) Right click on the installer and choose "Show Package Contents".
2) A folder will open on the desktop. Drill down to Contents > SharedSupport and double click the disk image InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop.
3) From here you can either burn a DVD, or copy the contents to a flash drive. Personally, I would strongly suggest using an 8 GB flash drive formatted as Mac OS Extended. You will be able to boot to it in about 30 seconds instead of at least 10 minutes off of a DVD, and it will install MUCH faster. Make sure the flash drive is empty, or you've copied anything off it it you need as it will need to be erased.
4) Don't just drag and drop the contents you see in the open disk image to the flash drive. It won't boot that way as it will be missing some hidden files. Open Disk Utility. You will something similar to this:
5) To accomplish the above, highlight either the flash drive's single partition (as I did), or the item at the bottom (Mac OS X Install ESD), which is what you will see with the Lion disk image mounted. It doesn't matter which one you pick. You'll then have the option to select the Restore tab towards the upper right. Drag and drop from the left column into the Source and Destination fields as shown above. If you've already erased the flash drive, you can uncheck the box. Click the Restore button.
You've just made your own bootable Mountain Lion USB Flash drive installer. Once you boot to the flash drive, run Disk Utility first to erase the drive you want Mountain Lion on, then continue with the install.
As far as restoring your iPhone and iTunes libraries, I couldn't tell you. So I wouldn't do any of the above until someone else chimes in with a way to do that after a clean install of ML.

• How can I do a clean install of Mountain Lion?

I have an older MacBook Pro that I'm selling. I upgraded to Mounbtain Lion, but there was not an option to do a clean install (wiping everything clean and starting fresh). I want to do this to make sure all of my data is removed before I sell it. How can I do a clean install of Mountain Lion in order to accomplish this? In the past, from DVDs, it was easy. Thanks!

Budrew wrote:
Sure, but I would imagine that it will be common for people to sell their Macs with upgraded OSs.
That was only OK when you bought the Upgrade DVD and included both the original system discs and the disc you used to upgrade the OS.
Since Apple has now gone to the Download only model of OS X you now always need to install the Original OS or an Upgraded version that you have the DVD disc for.
If a Mac came with Leopard and you upgraded to Snow Leopard and then to Lion or Mt Lion you must remove Lion or Mt Lion and reinstall either Leopard or Snow Leopard and include all the discs for that system, Originals and the Upgrde Snow Leopard DVD.
If your system came Snow Leopard and you installed Lion or Mt Lion thenn again you remoeve Lion or Mt Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard and include the original discs that came with the system
If your system came with Lion and you upgraded to Mt Lion then you remove Mt Lion and reinstall Lion.
The reason for all of that is because with the Download only OS all upgrades are TIED to YOUR Apple ID, not to the computer. So the new owner can not reinstall Lion or Mt Lion, whichever you upgraded to, without using your Apple ID.
