I want a new MacBook. now which one?

I'm new to the community, and I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I've seen LOTS of similar questions, but mine is a bit more specific.
I'm a High School Senior, and I've had my trusty '09 13-inch MacBook Pro since it first came out. The thing is, I spilled coffee all over it yesterday and it just won't boot up. As AppleCare expired a long time ago, I think I'll just buy a new one.
It was running OS X 10.8 just fine, as it was the high-end model at the time. I would still be using it if it wasn't for the accident.
I want a MacBook that will be able to last 5 years (speed-wise, because I said the same about my Pro), so that's why I'm aiming at the high-end Airs and Pros.
I'm considering these setups:
1- 13" MacBook Air, with 2.0GHz Core i7, 8GB of RAM and 256GB Flash.
2- 13" MacBook Pro, with 2.9GHz Core i7, 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD.
3- 13" MacBook Pro, with 2.5GHz Core i5, with OWC 16GB of RAM and OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD of 240GB
I'm going to use this laptop of HS and College, for my economics courses. I do a lot of photo editing on CS6 and some video editing on Final Cut, just for fun. I have a 1TB Thunderbolt external hard drive for the extra storage these applications may need.
What do you guys think?
Thanks

Hey,
Thank's 4 the advice , but one of my main problems is I live in South Africa and apple products is x2 as much as what the usa doller is for it. Eg Macbook pro starting price $1199 american dollars and directley converted to South African currency is R9160.30.... but the problem is if i want to buy it in my country it has been marked up alot and a Macbook pro starting price for me will be R13000 for 13 inch and if you directley convert our price into american dollers its $1704.30 american dollars, so thats +600 dollers more.
So its much more expensive to buy products in my country and thats just the starting price.
I want mobality but i was also thinking (imac mini) is kinda portable and can plug into any1  T.V u know.
So like i really do t know what to get and that, because its alot more money to spend than the US dollar.
So i really want you to put your self in my position you know...
And what is classified as a good monitor???
And i want to know why my friends say that the imac mini is pathetic , but i think it losts longer than most windows laptops, what do you think ??
And can i who lives in south africa buy products directley from apple them selves ??
Thank's man , hope you can help me out here!
Hope other people can c this 2

My mom has a brand new Macbook Pro which was set up at the Apple Store and now she cannot get it to accept her log in info.  What should she do next?

Thank you sig--it seems in talking to her on the phone that she was not giving me the info correctly and she couldn't get into her bank account, NOT the computer.  The computer is fine she was just frustrated with the bank's system and feeling alone with no help handy...
I appreciate your reply.  Thank you.

In general most macs you buy are the same. If you will be doing quite a lot of editing of photos and videos, then the big things to look for are:
Processor - 2.8ish GHz Intel i7 4-core - is about the best I have head of thus far.
RAM - fairly easy to upgrade yourself, but 16GB is typically more than you will need for the next 5 years at least.
iLife is reasonably good software for editing media, but as a photographer, you may have your own prefered software
The good thing about Apple is that they don't sell ****** computers in general. They offer little in the way of customization of hardware which is both their strength and weakness.

I'm debating between a Macbook Air (MC965LL/A) or a Macbook Pro (MD313LL/A) which one would you suggest?
I will be using this for college and taking it to class with me.  My biggest fear is that I may be too hard on the Air and damage it, but I like that it is lighter and looks cooler.  But which one do you believe is more logical and provides the best computer quality overall?

    This is an objective comparison,
Meanwhile, we start from the price of their basic models, considering of course that could get discounts as a student in the Education Store. Required about 100 € more to buy an Air with the same screen size of this Pro and already, in some cases, may be enough to make your own choice.
Assuming a score to score, we could say: Pro 1 - 0 Air
Until recently, the beloved laptop for school purposes was the white MacBook.Orphaned "bianchino", now out of the list for some time now Apple, the Mac that is most on the economic front is approaching the Air 11 "(900 € on the edu store). Air 13 "display offers a native that could be called HiRes, identical resolution to that of Pro 15" base:
    Air 11 "(16:9) 1366 x 768 = 1,049,088 pixels
    Pro 13 "(16:10 format) 1280 x 800 = 1,024,000 pixels
    Air 13 "(16:10 format) 1440 x 900 = 1,296,000 pixels
The comparison on the screens is not to be taken seriously. After all, is what we will see during every second of computer work.
And so the challenge back in a tie: Pro 1 - Air 1
For size and weight comparison is merciless. The Pro is a portable slim, well built and, after all, not too heavy. However, this aspect of the Air is unsurpassed. He created a new category of laptops is so small wonder. The weight is also almost halved with 1.3 kg against 2Kg. For those who are always on the go is a godsend for the university and also the difference in the shoulder is remarkable.
We update our score: Pro 1 - Air 2
The battery is offered in both cases with a duration of 7 hours. 2-Air Pro 3. Another aspect that is rather in favor of a tie on the graphics: Both models use the Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM condivisa.Pro 3 - Air 4.
In academia, it may not feel quite the need for a Firewire port, but the fact remains that the Air does not have it.
I guess that's the case to score another point: Pro 4 - 5 Air
I scored a little more than necessary to have a complete line of Air, but for the purposes of this comparison we are interested in the value obtained from the Pro 13 'Air base and 13 "base. Both processors are dual core and, as you can see, the little guy gets along very well though with a slower clock. There is also a crucial aspect to consider: these data refer to the computing power but do not take into account the incredible speed-bump-up by SSD. Translated into monetary terms means that if the Pro 13 "is marginally faster when the CPU is under stress (such as video encoding) Air 13" is significantly more responsive in every area. By now you will present the advantages of SSD, as we talk about it constantly, and be assured that we are talking about really obvious differences in the everyday. The advantages obtained clearly outweigh the disadvantage resulting from a delay of a few seconds more in exporting an iMovie or a few seconds to compress a full-bodied zip file (which then increased the write speed scale in part). To assign a score in this area I find then a little 'in difficulty. From the viewpoint of the CPU Pro 13 "is slightly faster but we are sure you can assign an advantage when then every single operation, to start since, requires up to 8 times (the value is clearly approximate) of the time ' Air 11 "? I have no doubt to say that overall performance on the front of the Pro 13 "basis, as configured, is beaten hands down Air 13" base.
I say then: Pro 4 - Air 6 (but wait ... is not over)
Do you know where the above discussion decade? The MacBook Pro is much more expandable: add just € 77 and takes a 60GB OCZ Agility SATA3 that mounts in an instant. At that point, the bill draws on the opposite reactivity with SSD and the difference of the processor, though not so obvious, back to bite. It is also possible to realize different combinations. We have spoken of a disk of only 60GB in effect, but in the Pro can also be used as an adapter to enter the optibay the HDD of 320GB in place of the original SuperDrive. In this way we obtain the speed of the solid disc for the operating system and applications and the increased capacity of a traditional hard drive for archiving. Also, the RAM, which base is 4GB on both, on the Pro can be easily increased to 8GB. To want to do things right we should say that the added cost rises well and lose the initial assumption for which we have assigned a point to Pro for the greater economy.Furthermore, the comparison is based, only the basic models, however, the counter remains a valuable expandability, both now and in the future: if after some time you should decide to improve the performance of your Mac, is with the Aircan only change SSD (mSATA but those are expensive), while the Pro will have more flexibility.
u point for the Pro: Pro 5 - 6 Air
With the 2011 version of the MacBook Air has resumed the backlit keyboard, but still (and will) not have an Ethernet port, Superdrive and the infrared receiver. The absence of the reader / writer is a point against him, this is indisputable
equal footing Pro 6 - Air 6. As Apple moves fast towards a future where this will no longer be necessary (see installation and operating system software via the web) can still be useful today. It must be said that with less than 30 € you take an external drive efficiently (review) but this still requires to carry around another "element". On a personal level each of us will be evaluated differently this absence, there are those who do not tolerate it and who has already got used to (in extreme cases supported by the Remote Disk feature) but it is still a lack of perspective in a single complete computer , at least at present.
For this reason we say: Pro 7 - 6 Air
pull the money (or better scores ) won the pro of a single point.
i hope it can help you ti choose

  • IMac really slow compare to my new macbook air which i bought several month ago. What should i do to get my iMac fast?

I have just bought a new Macbook Air several month ago, and i realize that my iMac is very very slow compare with the macbookair, what should i do to faster my iMac,
This few point happen slow at my iMac:
When Restart it is very slow.
When search spotlight or search a file using finder.
When Running iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie. Especially iPhoto
When transfering image from my phone to iphoto.
    When Open New Application.
When working in multi application when swich between application, sometimes it was hang for a few second.
Sometimes typing aslo slow and the text wont come out and the cursor hold a few second.
I think above 7 points was very annoying my working, especially when in a rush.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Two graphics card on macbook pro which one do I use?

I have two graphics cards on my macbook pro. ADM random 6490m (256mb vram) and Intel HD graphics 3000 (512mb vram). My question is which one should I use? I don't do any hardcore gaming or photoshop. I guess that I am just looking for the best display and least buffering if that even has anything to do with the graphics card. I just want to get the most out of my macbook. I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Your MBP more or less chooses which graphics card to use automatically.  In System Preferences>Energy Saver, check Automatic graphics switching.  When it's checked on, it will use the higher power and higher quality dedicated AMD 6490 when you're plugged into the wall, and uses the Intel 3000HD when on battery.
I have downloaded gfxCardStatus to give me more control over which graphics card to use.  There are times I might want the AMD while on battery, even though it runs hotter and uses more battery life.
Either card will do well with HD movies, though I notice a lot more artifacts with the Intel 3000 when the movie has a lot of action or explosions or sounds.  If you want to do hardcore gaming, you need the AMD of course.  Photoshop is more dependent on the central processor rather than the graphics card, so I'm not sure you'd have much issue using either one.

Have a G400, OS10.4.11. Need 10.5 or later to install a new printer.
    1) Which one will run best?
    2) How do I upgrade?

It's probably cheaper to buy a new printer & sell the existing on on ebay.

  • I want a new Macbook!

    Dear friends,
at the beginning of the November my friends will be in New-York. I want to buy extended configuration of new MacBook Air (13 in., i7 1.8). As I understand this configuration is not available in retail Apple Stores and should be pre ordered for the delivery to concrete address.
According to this I’ve got few questions:
    - Can I order my new laptop via apple web-site and ask to make a deliver to my friends hotel? Can I use my AppleID (registered in Russia) and my card (of      russian bank) for this purchase?
    - Can I order my new laptop via apple web-site and ask to make a deliver to one of New-York’s Apple Store? Same questions – сan I use my
AppleID (registered in Russia) and my card (of russian bank) for this purchase?
Is there a way to deliver a laptop of this configuration in a retail Apple Store, so my friends bought it there? In this case I have to be sure that laptop of this configuration is waiting for them in store.
I want to find simplest way to buy MacBook Air of non standard configuration in US.
    Thanks a lot.
    Best regards. Kirill Kuznetsov

Apple does not provide store/purchasing support via email (at not least not until after you have placed an order).  You can call them, their phone number is listed on the web page.  The store customer service line is 1-800-676-2775, and will only work from inside the USA (since the USA store doesn't do business outside of the USA, they do not bother paying for an international toll free number).
    see http://store.apple.com/us/help/contact/
You cannot make a purchase from the Apple USA web store with a foreign credit card and foreign credit card billing address.

  • Updates for Final Cut Studio, Quicktime, and OS X on new iMac?  Which ones?

    Hello All,
Okay, so I have been searching through the forums about updates for all the software updates, and which ones work and which ones don't. The Tiger vs. Leopard battle. The ones that have had no problems doing all the updates and the ones who are suffering terribly. But it is really hard to pinpoint everything since it is all spread out over so many different pages. So I am hoping that this question will be of benefit to others in my situation.
So I have a new iMac Alu 24" 2.4 ghz, and 4 gig of RAM. I did software update for everything except the OS and not for Quicktime. So I am running OS X 10.4.10 and Quicktime 7.2
I installed FCP Studio 2 without a hangup. I did not even bother to install Color because I knew that it would be more then this GPU could handle. I didn't bother with Live Type either. Don't use it at work and don't think it will be any different at home. So I intalled FCP 6, Compressor 3, Motion 3, Soundtrack 2, and DVD Studio 4. I have done no updates to any of the Studio programs. So I am looking for some opinions (more then one would be appreciated). What updates should I do and which ones should I avoid for my particular setup? I want to do this as right as I can the first time around.
Again sorry, if this seems redundant, but I want to get everything together in one place to make sure that I don't miss something from split up forums. And hopefully this will help others. Sorry about the length.
    My Current Situation:
Alu iMac 24" 2.4ghz, 4 gig of RAM
    OS X 10.4.10
    Quicktime 7.2
    Final Cut Pro 6.0
    Motion 3.0
    Compressor 3.0
    DVD Studio Pro 4.0
    Soundtrack Pro 2.0
Which updates? If the almighty Shane Ross would like to step in, please feel free to. Thanks folks for any and all help.

UPDATE: Okay, so I gave my Final Cut a really simple run through last night. Just shot some footage on the HV20 and imported it and did the Apple recommend workflow for the reverse telecine. (I know, I know, doing the full out reverse telecine to get it to 24p is unnecessary if I am just going back to video, but I just wanted to give it whirl) Anyways it worked, and it came out great. So I dropped into a 24p timeline and through it together, and no software malfunctions. No complaints. During log and capture, there was a lag between my player and the computer, but the footage after capture was right on targert (I am referring to audio sync).
So as long as it works, I am happy. Besides, I don't plan on using on board audio too much since there are no XLR inputs unless I get a Beachtek. Different story, sorry.
So currently, with absolutely no Studio updates, OS X 10.4.10, and QT 7.2, on a brand new iMac, 2.4ghz, 24", everything is as it should be. I'll keep checking back in to see if anyone recommends an update for me or if I encounter problems and what caused them.

  • Please HELP! Deleted bookmarks on my new MacBook, now DH's bookmarks are gone!

    Mac newbie here...bear with me!
I got a new MacBook Pro today.  I got home from the store and set it up.  It prompted me to do the iCloud thing, so I did.  Then I opened Safari and saw that all my DH's bookmarks were loaded on my computer.  (Guess that shoulda been a red flag there...) I didn't want/need them, so I deleted them...hundreds of them.  Apparently they are also deleted from DH's MBP.  I went back into the iCloud and unchecked the bookmarks box (and everything else), but how does he recover his bookmarks?  I feel horrible!

In System Preferences>iCloud if you click Account Details do you each see your own unique Apple ID?

  • VMWare running on a MacBook Pro.Which one ?, VMWare running on a MacBook Pro.Which one ?

    Good morning people !
I currently have a MacBook Pro 15" Duo core 2008 model running the latest OSX.
I need to have Windows on my machine because of the accounts software, currently I am using VM Ware Fusion 3.
My machine has really slowed down now and I think it is time for a new MacBook Pro.
I know that the new processors are available on the 13" in i5 and i7, and the 15" has a quad core i7.
I do not at present use iMovie although I may get into it later on. I have CS Suite 5 for Dreamweaver and Photoshop.
My question is, as I am running a virtual machine most of the time and I need it on most of the time too, would you recommend an i5 processor or the i7 quad core for doing the sort of work I do (no gaming at all)
    I can either buy a new i5 13" or a better spec Early 2011 model i7.
    Views please....

    Thanks Sig
I have now ordered an 15" MacBook Pro quad core i7.
    Will upgrade the RAM ASAP.

  • Best way to connect a macmini and new macbook air to one monitor?

I have an older macmini connected to a 17 inch Sony monitor and I would like to connect my brand new macbook air 11" to the same monitor so that I can switch between the two and easily disconnect the air when I need to take it with me. Can anybody give me a good solution. I might be open to buying a new monitor if I have too. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi doxozo,
You'll need to invest in a KVM switch that supports video. What sort of connection(s) are you using? DVI? You can get a decent KVM switch that support video for about $55-75.

  • Help - moved to new macbook, now iTunes no longer recognising old library

    Hi All,
Hope you guys can assist me.
I have recently purchased a new macbook pro and it is replacing my older macbook white.
I have always kept all my itunes music, both purchased and added from CD on an external 1TB hard drive. This was done becuase the 160GB internal HD got eaten up very quickly.
I set up the external drive and linked the itunes folder to itunes via preferences many moons ago, probably around itunes 6 or something like that.
Any who, I have just come to try and add my itunes music to my new macbook pro itunes, and I am not sure how to bring all the music into itunes.
I have to be honest, I have probably kept my folder stored on my external HD in the wrong configuration for my new itunes to recognise.
Please, please, please can you help with some advise:-
    1. How should my itunes library (on external HD) be organised, i.e. should all music, TV, Movies etc, be under a specific folder?
I am wondering if I replicated the file system currently in my macbook onto my external HD and then copied all the music folders into the correct folder, this might clean up my library.
    2. How do I direct itunes towards my library on my external HD so to import all my music, TV etc, into itunes.
    3. Any tips you have on keeping my library in check for the future.
Thanking you for any advise you can give.

You should use Migration Assistant to get everything from old computer onto new computer.
Then everything will work just like old computer..
    2. How do I direct itunes towards my library on my external HD
    (See above before doing this)
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to new computer.
Connect external to new computer and launch iTunes.
    Hi Chris,
As mentioned in my previous post, all my itunes music etc, are/were on a seperate external HD, so never kept on my original macbook, so I am not sure Migration Assistant would have help me on this, as it is just a plug the external HD into the new macbook.
Therefore I still have the problem of directing itunes to my library on my external HD so that all music etc, shows up in itunes.

  • Want to buy new IMac  but which one?

    Hi guys,
Firstly I want to say that I do not own a Mac yet but am looking to buy one, I have very limited experience with them and am not sure where to start I also only use computers for general stuff like internet browsing watching a movie or 2 and sometimes editing videos, I don't play any games either. I am also not really up with the ins and outs of computers so bear with me.
I'm looking at getting an IMac 2.66 or 2.8GHz but I have a few questions.
Would you suggest that I buy the 2.66 as it looks like the same unit except for the processor speed and save some money for some more memory? Just on that I would probably buy the memory seperate and not get it upgraded when buying the IMac right? Because of the cost I could get it much cheaper elsewhere yes?!
A question about internet & Broadband use, I live in Darwin Australia and am using Bigpond Broadband ADSL 20000/512kbps I am not sure what I need to do to hook up an IMac, do I just use a ethernet cable as per PC do I need any other hardware for either model 2.66 or 2.8GHz?
I guess that's it for now, I hope you can help me, I'm sure you can.
Anything else you can tell me will be helpful as I'm keen to get one and get started.
    Thanks

    Hi BB4L -
I'm from the UK so not sure if I can help re the broadband question but I'll try my best. I use the 20inch 2.66GHz iMac at work and whilst the screen isn't amazing, it's a great, fast machine and would suit your needs perfectly.
You're right, you'd notice hardly any benefit between the 2.66 and 2.8 machines. They have the same HD, RAM and graphics card. You'd be better off spending the extra cash on maxing out your RAM to 4GB - this will give you a more significant speed increase. And don't use Apple to upgrade your RAM, buy it from somewhere cheaper and install it yourself - it's extremely simple. The instructions are [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1760]. A good choice of RAM is [here|http://www.crucial.com> although I'm not sure whether there's an Australian outlet. I just found [this|http://www.buymac.com.au/store/computer-addons/mac-memory-upgrades/imac/i mac-intel-core2duo-penryn] site but obviously have never used them so couldn't say if they're good or not.
In terms of broadband, if you already have a modem/router box which came with your broadband then you can hook it up with an ethernet cable or connect wirelessly if the box is a wireless modem/router.
    Hope this helps.
