I want firefox to open Microsoft XPS files rather than use Internet Explorer

Microsoft's XPS file format (their take on PDF files) can be opened only by Internet Explorer. Does a plugin exist to allow XPS files to be opened in Firefox - if so I can't find one. I would have thought this was a common request!
To avoid having to deal with the time consuming "open with" dialogue I have made IE the default browser but I'd rather use Firefox.

Please see this support article on [[Session Restore]]. Follow the instructions under the "Configuring session restore" header. When you get to the step where it says "Show my windows and tabs from last time" you can choose from showing your homepage or showing a blank page instead.

    Thanks anyone

    Hi guys
Thanks for suggestions. Carolyn, I did as you suggested but didn't solve problem. KeeChan, as explained in original post, that is my usual fallback but not all web sites work like that. Try downloading Safari - right click (Ctrl Click) on download button and all you get is the "Download.png" image.
I finally found the answer. A long time ago I had downloaded and used "SpeedDownload" and had deleted it. Somehow, some trace of the app was left behind and the mime association with dmg files was messed up.
You can not get rid of Speed Download by throwing its files away or by using an app cleaner product. You MUST run the Speed Download installer program and select the "uninstall" option to remove it.
My browsers now download dmg files correctly.

  • I can not click certain tabs on my Etsy page & they will not open using Firefox, but I am able to open these tabs on Etsy when using Internet Explorer

When I am signed onto Etsy, there are certain tabs on the top of the page that I can not click open when using firefox, but when I use Internet Explorer, I am able to click open these tabs. The following tabs on my etsy page will not open: Your Shop, Your Account, Help, & Sign Out
Other tabs on the same page will let me click them open, such as:
Buy, Sell, Community, Blog, Mobile, when using Firefox & Internet Explorer

Both the Yahoo! Toolbar extension and the Babylon extension have been reported to cause an issue like that. Disable or uninstall those add-ons.

  • How do I insure that Firefox is my full-time browser -- I was using Internet Explorer prior to downloading Firefox. Shud I delete Internet Explorer?

I want to only use Firefox as my full-time browser. I do not want to use Internet Explorer because it doesn't work on a web site I want to use, but Firefox does work. All I want to know is how do I insure that Firefox will be my full-time browser?

    Please do the following:<br><br>
    #Start Internet Explorer.<br><br>
#Click Tools | Internet Options and then click the Programs tab.<br><br>
#Remove the checkmark from: "''Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default browser''.<br><br>
    #Click Apply/OK and then close Internet Explorer.<br><br>
#Start Firefox, click the orange Firefox button, go to Options | Options | Advanced.<br><br>
#In the General tab, menu at the bottom, checkmark "'''Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup'''" and then click the "''Check Now''" button.<br><br>
    #Click OK.
That's all there is to it.

  • Can't Upload Large Files (Upload Fails using Internet Explorer but works with Google Chrome)

I've been experience an issue uploading large (75MB & greater) PDF files to a SharePoint 2010 document library. Using normal upload procedures using Internet Explorer 7 (our company standard for the time being) the upload fails. No error message is thrown,
the upload screen goes away and the page refreshes and the document isn't there. I tried upload multiple and it says throws a failed error after a while.
Using google chrome I made an attempt just to see what it did and the file using the "Add a document" uploaded in seconds. Can't figure out why one browser worked and the other doesn't. We are getting sporadic inquiries with the same issue.
We have previously setup large file support in the appropriate areas and large files are uploaded to the sites successfully. Any thoughts?

File size upload has to be configured on the server farm level. Your administrator most likely set
up the limit to size of files that can be uploaded. This size can be increased and you would then be able to upload your documents.

  • Cannot open an Excel 2010 workbook by using Internet Explorer 8.0 in sharepoint 2010

When am trying to open a Microsoft Office Excel 2010  workbook from a Web site by browsing to the location with Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0, you cannot open the file. Instead, you receive the following messages:
Some files can harm your computer. If the file information below looks suspicious, or you do not fully trust the source, do not open this file.
Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer?
If you click Open, you receive the following error message:
    Could not open 'http[s]://<var>Server_name</var>/<var>File_path</var>/<var>File_name</var>.xls'.
After you click OK, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'http[s]://<var>Server_name</var>/<var>File_path</var>/<var>File_name</var>.xls' There are several possible reasons:
The file name or path name does not exist.
The file you're trying to open is being used by another program. Close the document in the other program, and try again.
The name of the workbook you're trying to save is the same as the name of another document that is read-only. Try saving the workbook with a different name.

    Hi Ramesh,
Please install the hotfix package and test the issue again:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817576/en-us
In addition, try uncheck the option “confirm open after download” per:
    http://jritmeijer.wordpress.com/2006/08/20/some-files-can-harm-your-computer-if-the-file-information-looks-suspicious-or-you-do-not-fully-trust-the-source-do-not-open-the-file/

  • Why can't I open CNN videos? I can using Internet Explorer.

When I visit CNN' s website using Firefox I can't open video. If I go back to Internet Explorer I can opn CNN videos with no problem.

If you use extensions like <i>Adblock Plus</i> or <i>NoScript</i> or <i>Flash Block</i> that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Does iCould Control Panel V2 still create new Outlook data files rather than using the default data files already in use?

This has always made iCloud for the PC an impossibility for me, and seems to be just a plain stupid implementation.  Moving all the calendar and tasks to a proprietary iCloud data file within Outlook breaks so many other things that I need to use within Outlook.  Does version 2 of iCloud Control Panel still work this way?

Yes, just like Microsoft Exchange, Zimbra, Gmail etc.

  • How can I open Microsoft Word files on my iMac?

You can even use the Pages app that is installed on your computer. Finally you can buy a license of Office for Mac and have Word, Excel, PowerPoint and if you want Outlook too.

  • When opening an XPS file, IE hangs. Task manager shows XPSViewer.exe taking 50% of CPU.

I've seen this twice now on older XP machines (sadly, some of my users DO have to run XP) so I figured I should document it, if only because the fix is so non-intuitive.
By default, XPS documents open in IE with a helper called XPSViewer.exe. You can also open them in a separate standalone viewer by installing the Microsoft XPS Essentials thing
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11816
But that doesn't work in IE, and my users needed it to.
Sometimes, users report that when they open an XPS file, the browser hangs. Checking task manager shows that XPSViewer.exe is taking up 50% of CPU cycles. Ending the process allows IE to respond, but the document is not displayed.
The first hint at a solution was from:
    http://discussions.citrix.com/topic/273861-cannot-open-xps-files/
"This issue occurs because the non-administrator user account cannot access the %WINDIR%\System32 folder. By default, WPF writes the output file to the %WINDIR%\System32 folder. The %WINDIR%\System32 folder requires administrator permissions.
When the non-administrator account tries to access this folder, the WPF caching code is triggered. This code causes the screen to flicker.
In 32-bit versions of the Windows Server 2003 operating system, the output file is D3d9caps.dat. In 64-bit versions of the Windows Server 2003 operating system, the output file is D3d9caps64.dat. "
It got me thinking that maybe i could modify the rights to the file instead of applying the hotfix...
After doing that the user could open the .xps file successfully!. But after closing the xps (internet explorer uses xpsviewer.exe to display the file) the file d3d9caps.dat disappeared from the system32 folder...
The next time the .xps file was opened by the user, the d3d9caps.dat file was not created in system32 folder as one might expect, but instead in the more appropriate path "...Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data" folder.
So in fact, all i had to do to fix this problem was deleting/renaming the d3d9caps.dat file in the system32 folder.
So all you have to do is delete (or for safety, rename) that d3d9caps.dat file and try again! Works a treat!

In the %WINDIR%\System32 folder, find d3d9caps.dat or d3d9caps64.dat
and rename it to anything. Bamn. Fixed. That easy.

  • Opening Microsoft XPS docs with a Mac

Does anyone know how to open Microsoft XPS format documents? I gather they are an alternative to PDF's (do we need one?). When I run Internet Explorer on Windows XP via Parallels, it 'prints' or saves docs as .xps files. But I can't open them within Mac OSX to view or print them.

    Hi,
the remark about support in OpenOffice and NeoOffice is not correct.
NeoOffice 2.2.4 Patch 5 doesn't open XPS files, it's also not on the feature list for NeoOffice 2.2.5.
Open Office doesn't support it either.
    regards,
    nixps

  • When I open firefox, it opens a pdf file as well as home page - how do i stop this?

Since upgrading to v5, when I open firefox, it opens a pdf file as well as my home page. I cannot see any setting or fields in "options" that can be causing this - how do i stop the pdf from opening?

Why didn't you remove all three prefs.js files?
You may have left one file prefs.js that is causing the problems.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile:
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

Use a product such as OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Google Docs, iWork, or Microsoft Office 2008 or newer. In the case of Word documents, you can also use TextEdit.
