I want iPhone Contacts to override Address Book on Mac #2

I have updated my Address Book in my MacBook Pro and have synced it with my iPhone - so I'm finally good there.
However, I am trying to update my iMac and need to update the Address Book there. I don't want to sync it at this point - I want to wipe the iMac Address Book clean and start anew with the iPhone.
Any tips on how to do this?

Hi Im running on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 with the updated version of iTunes.
I just recently changed from using Outlook for Mac to using iCal and Mail. Outlook for mac was my main platform for contacts and calanders. When switching over, i managed to sort out my calanders into iCal, but my contacts do not seem to copy into my address book. All my updated contact are in my iPhone. iTunes still shows options to sync to groups i created in outlook even though i have totally deleted outlook.
I basically want to syc all my iPhone contact to my Address book and override the contacts I have in there already, and use address book as my contacts platform.
Help!

  • How do i transfer my iphone contacts to my address book on mac

my daughter is trying to sync her iphone contacts to her mac. she has tried seveal times and not able to.

Don't know why syncing isn't working, but one way she can at least transfer her contacts to her mac is to use the app My Contacts Backup, which will back up the contacts on her phone as an email attachement.  She sends this email to herself, opens it on her mac, then double-clicks on the attachment and the contacts will import to Address Book.

  • Do not want ALL Contacts in my Address Book on my iPhone

I have a lot of business contacts in my address book on my Mac that I do not want on my iPhone.  Is there a way to select specific groups to snyc from iCloud?  Or is it all or nothing?
    Thanks
    Bonnie

Depending on how your Address Book is organised it may be relatively simple or not, but basically you need to drag the contacts you want to move to On My Mac to your desktop, delete them from Address Book and add them back (double click on the file on your desktop) once you have selected All On My Mac from the groups list.
If you don't have an All On My Mac group, you'll need to go to preferences > general and make set your default account to On My Mac.
You can drag more than one contact at a time so if you have them in groups already it will help, if not you can work through the list of contacts using cmd click to select just the one's you want.
You can turn off the sync with Google and Yahoo from preferences > accounts > On My Mac.
    Summary:
Select all the contacts you want to move
    Drag them to the desktop
    Delete from Address Book
Set default account to On My Mac
Select All On My Mac from groups
Double click the file on your desktop

  • How to sync iPhone contacts back to Address Book.

I came across this problem and found a work-around on the forums, but some guys there–including myself–felt that iTunes should sync our contacts bi-directionally from iPhone to Address Book on our Macs, and vice versa.
As it turns out, that's really the default behavior in iTunes when syncing between iPhone/Address Book on the Mac. However, if you've been using iCloud to sync everything lateley, this will not be the default behavior, because your iTunes won't sync anything back to your Address Book on the Mac unless you completly disconnect from iCloud services.
So..... if you want to sync your contacts from your iPhone back to your Address Book on your Mac, I'm providing this simple, yet tedious, solution:
Step 1: Open Address Book on your Mac, select all of your contacts, and press delete. You'll be asked if you really want to delete the contacts. Hit ok and     continue.
Step 2: Navigate to: Macintosh HD/Users/(YourUserName)/Library/Application Support/Address Book.
Note* On OS X Lion, your Library folder will not be shown. You'll have to navigate there a different way. The way I did it was:
Click the "Go" option up in the Finder menu bar.
Toward the bottom of the pull-down menu, click on the "Go to Folder..." option.
    Type "~(YourUserName)/Library/Application Support/Address Book.
Once there, I searched through all the folders included and deleted anything that ended in ".plist" or ".log". This way, Address Book is completely reset when next open it.
Step 3: Open Address Book, add at least one contact if none are automatically created for you, and make sure iCloud is Disabled (if an account is there) in your Address Book Preferences pane, which you find by clicking "Address Book" in the top menu bar. Then, quit Address Book.
Step 4: On your iPhone, open your Settings app, go to the iCloud option, and turn all services off. After turning each one off, it will ask you if you want to keep the data on you phone. Always select "Yes", otherwise you may lose your data.
Step 5: Connect your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes, select your iPhone in the left column, select the "Info" tab, and check the box to "Sync Contacts"–further down on the page, in the Advanced section, make sure the Contacts checkbox is unchecked. If it's checked when you sync, iTunes will overwrite the contacts on your phone with the contacts from Address Book on your Mac.
Step 6: Sync your iPhone–This will sync the contacts from your phone to the Address Book app on your Mac.
Step 7: Open up Address Book, and add an iCloud account, or re-enable the one you disabled in step 3–This will sync all of those contacts to your iCloud account again. Then, you can also go back to the iCloud settings on your phone and turn all the services back on.
After all this, you should have been able to first sync your contacts from you iPhone back to your Address Book app on your Mac, then have them both synced up through iCloud with the same contacts being pushed everywhere.
    Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for all this, unfortunately it's still not helping me. Last week I turned on iCloud for contacts and not only did the iCloud sync fail, but now with iCloud off I haven't been able to sync iphone-to-mac thru iTunes.
I've checked that iCloud contact sync'ing is off, on both my Mac and iPhone. I've even turned off all other iCloud services on both devices. I followed your instructions precisely and even deleted more than you suggested from the App Support | Address Book folder. Step 6 just doesn't work. iTunes whips thru the Address Book sync progress when it should pause a bit to do the transfer—my Address Book archive is 44 Mb.
I have no desire to waste more time with iCloud, just want it to work the old fashioned way.  I'd gladly do a clean system re-install but not sure even that would do it…hard to tell where the problem lies.
Appreciate any light you could shed!

  • IPhone Contacts - OS X Address Book sync

I'm a new iphone user. For some reason, my Address Book application is not syncing with my iphone contact list. When I set up the iphone, the contacts in the address book went straight to the phone. But, when I've added new contacts on the phone, I can't find a way to automatically sync those into my Address Book. There appears to be a way to do this on the iTunes sync options, but the box is grey and won't allow me to check it. Is it possible to have contacts entered into the phone sync with the Address Book Function on my PowerBook?

Yes this is possible - the sync function for Address Book contacts and iCal calendar events is bi-directional with the iPhone - or should be.
You indicate there appears to be no way to do this via the iTunes sync options but the box is gray and won't allow you to select it which sounds contradicting.
Under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, is "Sync Address Book contacts" selected?
If so, this is the selection and do you have "All contacts" or " Selected groups" selected below?
    This should do it.

  • IPhone Contacts list missing Address Book Notes

In my Address Book app I like to put a bunch of information in the Notes field. All other fields transfer over to the Contacts app on the iPhone but the Notes field doesn't show. How can I get Notes information in Address Book to appear in iPhone Contacts.app?

Amendment: though some entries (if they're 5 lines or less) show complete, others appear truncated, others are repeated (two notes fields appear on the phone under the one entry) and still others are missing entirely. IOS 5.0.1, syncing using MobileMe.
Is this a limitation of iPhone Contacts?

  • New iPhone 4, How do I sync contact photos of address book on Mac to the iPhone contacts?

I have a new iPhone 4s, Cloud.  I have Mac with Cloud now.  Photos added to Mac address book do not always sync into the contacts of the iPhone 4s.  Ideas of what I need to do to get photos to show up on the iPhone contacts?

Connect the device to the computer.
In iTunes, select the content desired to sync.
    Sync.
This is all described in the User's Guide, reading it may be a good place to start.

  • Can't sync iPhone contact with iMac address book since Lion upgrade

iCal sync is fine.  All the proper boxes in iTunes are checked.  The iPhone is reconized in iTunes.  Any suggestions?

Sorry I don't have an answer for you.  I kind of doubt Apple has added a solution for that yet, since your Facebook account is not yet synced through iCloud; it is set up independantly on each device.
However I hope you can help me, I cannot figure out how to manually link contacts on my Mac; there is no Add Link button like there is on the phone...

  • HT4489 How can I synchronize contacts between Apple Address Book/iPhone address book and Outlook (I'm on Mac OX10.7.4 and using Office 2011)?

I appear to have done what I should to move to iCloud on my Mac, MacbookAir, iPhone and iPad.  Using Outlook 2011 on the iMac and unable to sync contacts between Outlook and my Apple Address Book and iPhone over the cloud.  I gather lots of people have the same problem but some appear to have solved it... any ideas?
Also, in some sync, I managed to duplicate the entries on the Address Book on my Mac, whereas the iCloud Address Book is ok.  How can I replace the Address Book on my computer with the one on iCloud?
    Thank You for any help!

Hi Lucy, I had the same problem with Outlook data sync. Once you've enabled iCloud all your contacts are moved to iCloud and are no longer stored on Mac, that's why Outlook cannot reach them - there is simply nothing to reach as data physically stored in cloud.
I use SyncMate to solve this problem. This app allows connecting and syncing numerous devices and accounts with your Mac and they have recently added iCloud into this list (here the page where they describe sync with iCloud http://www.sync-mac.com/cloud-sync.html ).
This is how I established sync of my Outlook data with iCloud via this app.
    1. SyncMate syncs only that data which is located on your Mac so you will need to move your contacts back to Address Book on mac from iCloud and disable iCloud for contacts (in order they were stored on Mac, not in iCloud).
    2. You install SyncMate and add iCloud as a new connection (depending on data you want to sync you need to choose "Cloud contacts" or "Cloud calendars" connection in SyncMate wizard and log into your iCloud via SyncMate). Once you've done this, you can sync data on Mac with iCloud via SyncMate.
    3. I may assume that automatic sync option is enabled in Outlook preferences (as previously your contacts on Mac were synced with Outlook). If no - please, enable it (got to Outlook preferences).
    4. Once all this done, data will be automatically synced betwen Outlook and iCloud (latter via SyncMate). The trick of SyncMate is that data is physically located on your Mac (thus ensuring it will be synced with other devices and accounts SyncMate supports, as I said before, SyncMate works with data which is located on Mac), but you still can have it in iCloud (sync will be performed via SyncMate, no need to enable iCloud itself).
    5. And of course, you will be able to sync your iPhone contacts with your Mac (SyncMate supports sync with iPhones also). These contacts will be also synced to Outlook.

  • IPhone email, Mail and Address Book (and MobileMe)

    Hi All.
Can someone please explain to me how Mail is able to use the Address Book contacts - if in fact it does use the Address Book contacts - on my laptop and my desktop?
I am currently on Thunderbird but have other software that I am told syncs to Address Book. This would make my life easier. I am thinking about converting to Mail instead of Thunderbird (to cut out one step in the "food chain" but I want to be sure I am making the right move and understand what I am doing.
Also, can anyone explain to me what my iPhone email is accessing when it tries to do an autocomplete?
Do the "Contacts" on my iPhone sync up to Address Book in any way via MobileMe??
Thanks for help on any of that...
    Jon

    Hi Daiya.
I can't tell you how much help this is.
Yes, iPhone Contacts sync to Address Book, via either iTunes sync or MobileMe.
This is sort of funny isn't it? That they are called Contacts on the iPhone and Address Book on MobileMe and on my laptop?
I believe the iPhone autocomplete checks both your Contacts AND any recently used addresses--there's no built-in method to clear the recently used addresses, as far as I know.
This is true for both MobileMe mail, GMail and for my website based email ([email protected]), yes?
You might also check out Postbox--from what I understand, it's built on Thunderbird, but it says it talks to the Mac Address Book and other parts of OS X.
    Thanks!
Integration with OS X features does seem to be Thunderbird's weak spot--I actually use MS Entourage, which has reasonable integration, much better than Thunderbird. I'd say it's not so much that you need to cut out a step in the food chain as that Thunderbird just doesn't participate in the OS X food chain.
Hi. Thanks. I'm planning on getting CardScan (where I handle Business Cards) synced up with Address Book. I can do this and it would be really simple I am told.
The question is now where do I go from there.
I have not read up on PostBox yet but I am starting to think that I need to perfect my Address Book in Thunderbird and export it to Address Book. Then I can start handling email in Mail.
If I do this, my thought is that my business cards will be synced with Address Book, Address Book will be synced with Mail (on my laptop and my desktop) and Address Book will be synced with my iPhone Contacts (where I compose email).
    How does that sound??!!
    Long time goal over here...

  • How do i sync Outlook for Mac contacts with apples address book ???

How do I sync outlook for Mac 2011 contacts with Address book.  I updated the itunes or apple updates and it erased my contacts from the address book.  I did have is set up where the they automaticaly updated back and forth but now I can not find how to check this.  Bottom line I want my contacts back to address book. ??????? anyone.

Outlook for Mac doesn't support contact (or calendar) syncing with iCloud because Microsoft  chose not to include the CardDAV (and CalDAV) protocals that are required (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2648915).  You'll have to use the OS X Address Book (Contacts) app to sync with iCloud.

  • Export contact photos from Address Book [REPOST]

Exporting contact photos from Address Book in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is a simple drag-and-drop to iPhoto or Finder. The picture is saved as a TIFF. However, in 10.5 Leopard, dragging the contact photo is non-responsive in both viewing and editing mode.
How do you export contact photos from address book in Leopard?

I dont believe you can. The address book usually makes use of photos already available on your drive, such as those in your iphoto libraryd, or the login icons, etc. Perhaps the lack of drag and drop is something they unintentionally left out, in which case you can request it by sending Apple feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

  • Is it possible to keep Contact List and Address Book seperate on iPhone?

I just made the switch today- big time – from Motorola to iPhone, and from PC to iMac, plus a Macbook Air as well for travel. Thanks to iphone and Mac forums I have been able to resolve most newbie issues and have exported my data, files and contacts without problem.
However there is one issue I have not been able to resolve or clarify:
    - My old phone contact list has now been transferred my new iPhone, consisting of about 100 phone numbers which I use regularly.
    - Address Book in my new iMac contains about 800 contacts including phone numbers, clients, etc, as well as personal bank account numbers, and other confidential data in the “Notes” field, which I need to refer to only occasionally.
But I understand that if I sync my iPhone with my Mac, it will merge my Address Book contacts on Mac, with the phone contacts on my iPhone Contact list, into one list. Is this true? Is it not possible to maintain 2 separate Apps on my iPhone, i.e
    1. The iPhone Contact list for frequently used telephone contacts, and
    2. The Mac Address Book with more detailed notes and account numbers, which I only need to refer to occasionally?
    3. If this is possible, can I configure it so that a password is required each time the Address Book on iPhone is accessed? (I realise I can configure the iphone to require a pin when turned on), but I would like a password to access the Address App because of the confidential data. Previously I had all this data contained on a Palm Zire 72 handheld and its PC Desktop counterpart, where a password was required to access.
From what I’ve read on the forums, it will be very cumbersome to have a phone contact list with 1000 names on it, so I want to keep phone contacts simple with phone numbers only. (I realise I can set up Group folders in Address Book, but this is not what I need). I'm also concerned about having confidential information on my iPhone which can be accessed without a password for that particular application. I intend to get MobileMe but that also does not address the issue of keeping Telephone Contacts seperate from Address Book on iPhone.
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Speculating:
if, as already suggested, you use the Groups function to sync only the 100 contact list numbers, then how to get the expanded Address Book?
I've not used it myself, but Bento might be worth looking into--Bento on the Mac pulls your Address Book data (I'm pretty sure) and syncs to Bento iPhone.
I don't recall hearing about any alternate phone books, but since pretty much any program on the Mac can hook into the Address Book, you might look at the more powerful note organizers to see if any of them pull that data?
You might have a problem getting notes added on the phone back into Address Book on the Mac, though.
I actually right now keep my main address book in MS Entourage (similar to Outlook), and only use the Mac Address Book to sync to the iPhone. I could sync Entourage to Address Book, but I don't--haven't sorted out the data yet, and I don't really need all the same numbers in both places.
If that sounds possible, you might look at Mark/Space and Missing Sync for iPhone---something like keeping all 800 contacts in Entourage, and syncing them all, but moving the confidential portion of each contact into Entourage Notes and syncing those via Missing Sync, perhaps might work. (I think you can link a contact to a note in Entourage)
An interesting problem. You might also send feedback to Apple:
    http://apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
as this is really not a usage scenario they've planned for. They probably don't care, though--doesn't seem all that common.

  • Moving contacts into icloud, address book and ultimately onto iphone 5 is impossible. Why so hard?

NEED TO TRANSFER/SYNC CONTACTS FROM 500+ VCARDS ON MY COMPUTER ---> TO MY IPHONE5.
Why not just make the phone an open device? Drag and drop. I've spent three days trying to figure out how to easily get my contacts from my dumbphone to the new iPhone 5. I bluetoothed off my dumb phone to my computer. Both my iMac and MacBook Pro have the vcards. And another thing, Address Book, contacts, gmail, iTunes, whatever, I can't import multiple vcards. They have to be done one at a time.
No mass transfers of any kind? I have over 500 contacts to move. I've tried the following:
-Importing to contacts onto iMac; address book won't read vcard
-Importing to contacts on MacBook Pro w/Mountain Lion; reads vcards, only 1 at a time
    -Importing to iCloud; doesn't work
-Importing to gmail contacts; only reads 1 at a time
-E-mailing 500+ to self in an e-mail and trying to open/transfer/read all on MacBook Pro and iPhone5; won't do multiple files
I know I can go pay Verizon to do it but I want to know WHY and HOW this works the way it does.
Beyond frustrated. Hulk, smash. Please for the love of god help me, and not in an "ambigous remark: sync to iCloud'" kind of way.
    THANK YOU!

Seriously folks?  I know it was long but I added all info to negate a need for endless back/forth clarifications.  No answers???
FYI, i tried syncing contacts to google/gmail and it was a total clusterF as well.  No gmail contacts, synced iphone, gmail contacts populated w/ all info but w/lots of repeat entries.  Used seek and merge repeats in gmail and then resync but no such luck.  Lots of iterations and nothing but fails.  Seems everytime the phone and the gmail lists are "as desired" a new sync puts a ton of repeats back into gmail or onto phone.  Still perplexed and still needing help....
    pretty please....
