I want my macbook to sleep after an hour of idle, but instead it restarts?

It frustrates me because sometimes I want to fall asleep while watching a movie, my macbook will turn off after 1 hour, but it restarts first! Its so annoying because I have saved tabs, documents I wanted to keep open... and I cant seem to figure out why it does that.
Any help would be appreciated.

Connect an external USB keyboard. You will find this discussed in the MBP's User Guide.

I want to restore my data after my pad was reset, but the latest backup was 5 months back. What can I do?

There is nothing that you can do. If you don't have a more recent backup, you can't magically create a current backup now. You can use the 5 month old backup, or simply start all over again. You can download most of your purchased content again as long as you use the same Apple ID that you used to make the purchases.

  • TS4080 apple thunderbolt display image on display intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys. Rebooting by pressing the power button resolves issue.

My apple thunderbolt display (which I purchased 1.5 years ago; OS 10.7.5 Mac Mini) intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys, so am thinking it is a hardware problem with the display. Rebooting by pressing the power button turns the screen back on, but the same phenomenon has occurred several times. Could this be a software issue, or do I need to have my display repaired? Your feedback would be appreciated.

Hi ED, tough to tell, but it does sound like it's waking with the bonk, just not displaying.
    Long shot but...
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
    Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
    Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
        1.    Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
        2.    Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

My COMPUTER goes to sleep and disrupts my apple tv all the time. How can I fix this?

That you are getting the BONG is a good sign, it's unlikely to be hardware if you are able to hear that.
Start by running SW update. It's not that there is a specific fix, but when updating it may rewrite some system files which may get this going again purely as a side affect. Worth a go, and should not harm the system.
Try reset the PRAM - Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Hopefully one of these quick fixes works, otherwise we'll need to try isolate the issue next - so if still having a problem, I'd try create a new user and login as that user to see if the issue persists (which will tell us if it's system wide or user specific)

Since I upgraded to Maverick when computer sleeps it will not wake up but must be restarted?  Also password to icloud is never saved?

I read someone said you can tap on "other" when selecting which wifi you connect to and then entering the exact wifi name of the network you wish to join and the password and then joining that network allowed the password to be saved.  Also with iOS 6 the minimum length of the password needs to be 8 characters.  Maybe you password on your router is less than 8 characters long

  • I don't want my MacBook to sleep when I close it.

Hello friends, I am sorry if this an asked question before but I looked for something similar and couldn't find it.
My problem is that I got a brand new MacBook Pro and I want to use it with my LCD monitor that I already had. I can easilly get display output just by pluging in the DVI output to the monitor. I can mirror displays and use as multi displays as well. What I can't do is, I want to use the external monitor by itsself and close my MacBook.( I mean, not turn it off, close the display part on the keyboard part But when I close it it goes to sleep. Is there a way to prevent it sleep and turn off its display while the connected external monitor and of cource the computer itsself still works? I am sorry if I got things too complicated. I'd appricate if someone helps. Thanks...

After my MacBook Pro wakes from sleep, the trackpad movement (mouse) reveals the sign-in screen in little squares.

    Hello there, peijinc.
I understand your MacBook Pro seems to be taking longer than expected when coming back from sleep. It sounds like you may be seeing the Mavericks feature called Safe Sleep. The following Knowledge Base article offers up an explanation of how that feature works:
OS X: Saving energy with Sleep
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5963
If you feel that this period of time is greater than normal, this article offers some practical steps to troubleshoot your Mac:
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357
Although the entire article offers relevant steps, this section may prove most useful:
If the steps above do not resolve your sleep-related issue, try these additional recommendations.
    Reset SMC
    Reset NVRAM/PRAM
    Test with external devices disconnected
    Try Safe Mode
    Try another user account

  • Macbook suddenly sleeps after 10.9.2

    Hi.
Roughly after 10 days of upgrading to 10.9.2, my air has been very annoying. It abruptly sleeps particularly when I move it or receive a Skype call. And I hear scratching noises a lot. Could this be a hardware issue rather than an upgrade problem? Because it happens frequently whne i lift it or turn it, I feel it might be a hardware problem, but I never had problems before the upgrade.
Has anybody experienced this sudden sleep thing?

I don't have an external monitor connected to test this, but trying rebooting your Mac without the external display connected, then plug it back in.

  • Opening macbook pro from sleep after some hours, login screen is blurry with progress bar?

I just got my first 13'' MBP three days ago.  Both last night and the night before I closed the lid to put it to sleep overnight for about 7 hours whilst plugged into the AC as to not drain unnecessary power. In the morning when I opened the lid it was on the login page but the screen was blurry and there was a progress bar on the bottom of the screen. My sister has had a MBP for a few months but this has never happened to her. The problem only lasted about 30 seconds but is it normal? Am I maybe doing something wrong?

Did you quit out all of your applications prior to letting the MBP sleep over night?
If concerned, you can either call AppleCare or return the MBP.  You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return and/or exchange w/no questions asked.

I know there are some problems with Question Slides, but I'm using them as timesavers. Building question slides yourself takes a lot more time. When I started using them, I had to find the right settings to get the results I wanted, but now mostly I do not have that much problems anymore (if the internet connection is not failing).
What are your Quiz settings: can the user have more than one attempt, do you allow Backward movement, Review possibility etc? Is the uploading to a LMS (which one), what were the Manifest settings?

  • New T61 with Vista64 wanting to switch to XP after 2 hours of ownership

I just got my T61 with Vista64 and found a core program I need that wont run (I suspect others will soon follow).  It seems like a lot of work to set-up a dual boot with XP so I was wondering if it would be easier to have a seperate HDD either in the Caddy or just swapping the drives from the Laptop it self ( 1 screw over cover to remove).
Any suggestions or advice?  Will XP have all the drivers I need?  I have the Intel Turbo Memory option.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
Have you considered installing a virtual machine program like Microsoft's Virtual PC, VMware's VMware Workstation, Innotek's VirtualBox and so forth, installing Microsoft Windows XP inside of that, and then running your core application inside of that? It will probably not be as fast as if you were to replace the hard disk drive with one containing a different operating system, but it might be more convenient to use, especially if you need to frequently swap between Windows Vista and Windows XP.

  • FMLE 3.2 capturing fewer frames after 8 hours of recording but no 'dropped frames' reported

A client of ours is capturing 20x live streams via FMLECMD directly to F4V files (15min chunks) for ~21 hours a day. They're finding that after approx 8 hours of recording, FMLE gradually reduces the number of frames it's recording & the resulting files have very choppy playback (no dropped frames are reported). It eventually crashes on most of the machines before completing a day's work. Some machines also display a C++ error message on crash whereas others just freeze up.
One PC was set to capture a blank input & doesn’t exhibit this behaviour ie captures at the initial/specified framerate even 20hrs in. Please see the profile xml below.
The spec of the capture workstations is:
    HP Z200 i3 i3-540/3.06GHz/2GB/160GB Hard Drive/DVD-Writer/ Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD/Windows 7 Professional
Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro in each, running Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2 (scripted to launch via CLI with no preview). These PCs are fresh out-of-the-box & have never been online.
As an immediate/short-term workaround, we've set a restart interval for FMLE of 5 hours but this compromises the recordings as the stop/start process obviously results in a loss of recording time & requires manual file renaming. Please note, none of the machines are streaming - just capturing locally to F4V.

The video framerate is 25fps. Timecode is embedded every 5 frames.
Capture starts at 25fps & continues capturing at that rate until around 8
hours. After which it gradually reduces the captured framerate till it
crashes or completes. This behaviour is exhibited on all 20 Pcs. The CLI
reports no dropped frames at all.

  • Had firefox for a long while, I just wanted to update to the new version, it downloads ok but instead of the start up page, I keep getting this: browser.startup

I can't get to the startup page so therefore I can't do any troubleshooting

Can you browse to another website at all?

  • How can I put my iMac to sleep after it has finished downloading or uploading something?

For example: I have some photos and videos that I want to send to a friend. I'm uploading them to a site to do this, and they're quite big files (250 MB).
I'd like to do this at night, but I don't want to let the computer run all the night through, when this maybe only needs a few hours.
I can only guess how long it will take (judging by the time it tells me that it will take, if available), and then I can set the computer to go to sleep after X hours or minutes.
Can I not just simply set it in a way that it goes to sleep automatically after the process is finished? Like, if there's a connection to the internet, that is being used (downloads, uploads), then it shouldn't go to sleep, else it will interrupt the upload, and I can start again.
Also, I have an iMovie update now, which is over a GB of download.
I may be mistaken, but I have the feeling that for some Apple programs, it actually keeps the computer awake until the process is done. But it isn't the case with all programs, only with some.
It's really annoying. Does anyone know a solution? I know that there's this box that you can tick, that says something like to keep the computer from going to sleep if there's a network connection, but in earlier OS this was actually working! Now it's 100% useless.

You can just set your Mac to sleep using the Energy Saver in System Pref.  Set it to sleep after say, 2 mins of inactivity then check the Put Hard Disk to Sleep setting too.  It won't sleep while you are down/uploading.

  • Shall I Put My Macbook To Sleep Or Shut It Down?

sorry for such a moronic question but I was wondering which would be better in the long run? I use my macbook for work from 8 to 2 in the morning and then shut it down. Then in the night around 9 Pm I sometimes use it again and leave it on for downloading stuff.
However around 1 am I shut it down and then the whole process happens again.
Being a windows user all my life, i have been in the habit o shutting down my PC, howver someone told me it affects performance in a Mac. Is that true?

My experience is like Troy's - I don't shut down for any routine event. Heat is nil and it comes right back up on it's network (unlike the Windoze laptop I'm forced to use at work which wakes up quite grumpy...) Never seen a problem in 5 years from this on my 3 Mac laptops.
Mine is set to automatically wake up on workdays when I do (System Controls energy conservation panel), then an iCal event downloads weather and traffic reports which are waiting for me when I sit down with my bowl of cheerios. As long as I was logged in when it went to sleep, that is, and it doesn't wait for a password. It's also set to Sleep after 3 hours of inactivity.
Battery life is generally thought to be better if they're on a charger and 'floating' when not in use, so while the drain sould be very small overnight - maybe 10 minutes of run time?? - I would leave it plugged in, assuming you have the power adapter always with it, or a second at home.
