I want my SnowLeopard manual-save back in Lion.

To Mac OS X Lion Product Manager:
Here's a list of annoyances and frustrations re Lion autosave:
I save my work at conceptual checkpoints that make sense to me. When autosave keep saving my files my history gets dirty so quickly that revision history doesn't make sense to me anymore. It's more difficult to get back to a version where I can correlate to my checkpoint.
Frequently, I open 'Numbers' documents for what-if analysis without intension to save it at all. When autosave kicks in, it modifies the time signature of the document. Then every time before quitting, I have to "Revert to the original", or to create a duplicate and close the original; i.e., I have to do more thing that I don't used to do before. What happened to Apple's philosophy of non-intrusiveness? (BTW, full screen was nice :-)
When working on regular hard disk drives (not even mentioning network drives) autosave is just distraction and annoyance. It keeps bugging me every time it tries to save. When files get slightly larger (such iWork files) even SSD disk drive becomes annoying. (Don't get me wrong; I have 2011 17" MacBook Pro with fastest i7 processor.)
All machines that we do critical work has either battery or UPS. I have not witnessed Mac OS X crash more than once in two years. That said, what do we afraid of? Loosing what exactly? Paranoia, as we see in politics, should not be our motivation.
The reason I moved away from MS-Windows because it got more and more intrusive over time with the assumption that they need to design an operating system so easy even very naive persons can use it. There is thin line there, when you cross it you start annoying normal people. If you remember human intelligence bell-curve, normal people are the majority. With autosave, I see the a similar pattern in Mac OS X (sad but true). Please don't cross that line or give us an option if you do.
Because of iWork autosave, I reinstalled my Lion and from scratch and installed iWork with the latest update for SnowLeopard -- without autosave. This time 'Software Update' is keep bugging me, but this is much lesser annoyance that I can live with.
That said, I want my manual save back in Lion as an option for the rest of us, normal people, professional working people -- if you really care about our experience.
Very frustrated Mac lover.
(I love everything else in Lion.)

We are all users like you here. There is no guarantee that any of the Apple programmers will read your post. I suggest you leave feedback for Apple for Lion as well as each of the apps you miss Save As… in.
Also, you posted in the iWork for iOS forum. The better location would be one of the iWork for Mac forums.
Take a look at this thread for a workable solution.

  • After a recent upgrade the system no longer asks me if i want to quit and save open tabs. why is that and can I do something to get this feature back?

I recently had a firefox update (withing past 3 days). Now when I go to close down my browser it only asks me if I am sure I want to close all tabs.
Previously it had asked me if I wanted to quit and save my open tabs or just quit.

You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page.<br />
Another possibility is to use:<br />
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
You can set the warn prefs on the about:config page to true via the right-click context menu or toggle with a double left-click.

I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to, there isn't a user manual section in the iPad's Settings app. If you want an iPad then you can either download it from here : http://support.apple.com/manuals/ipad/
Or if you download the iBooks app then there should be a copy in the ibookstore in it

  • I recovered my back up via a wired connection. now Time Machine does not recognise older back ups wirelessly and wants to do a first back up

I recovered a back up from my time machine via a wired connection after getting the 'white screen of death'. Now Time Machine does not recognise any back ups on the time machine when connected wirelessly and wants to do a first back up of the whole machine. How do I get my mac to recognise these older back ups? It connects to the wifi network the time machine creates fine, with the same name and password.

    I recommend the following.
    1. Reset the TC to factory.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Rename the TC to SMB standard.
That means short names.. 2-20 characters but less than 10 is excellent. eg TCGenx (use number for x that is actual generation of the TC)
    No spaces.
    Pure alphanumeric. No apostrophe.
    3. Ensure IPv6 is set to link-local..
Do the same thing for ethernet if that is used.
    4. Manually mount the TC disk in Finder.
Use Go in the top menu.. connect to server.
    Type in
AFP://TCname.local (where TCname is your new short name for the TC and local is default domain .. it helps using the domain I found).
You will then find the computer either can or cannot find the network resource.. if it fails something else is wrong with the actual network and you will need to fix that.
It will request the password if it is found.. password is public by default unless you changed it.. type in the password and check to keep it in your keychain.
    5. Delete current TM setup and redo it with the newly named TC.
    See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If your backups cannot be found, try B6 again, now that you actually know that the disk has been properly discovered.

  • Editing in external editor: Save back as JPG and (auto-) add to library

I want to use external edit (in my case: Adobe Photoshop Elements) for editing features not available in LR3 (for example: skew) and easily save back as JPG. The source in LR3 is a DNG-image.
LR3 offers easy workflows out-to-external-editor>back-to-LR3 if you save back as TIFF or PSD.
But, I didn't find any easy or not extremely clumsy way to saving the edited photo back as JPG to LR3 and having it organized "close" to the original/source-DNG (preferably stacked).
    Any ideas out there?

Thanks for the suggestion! If have taken your answer to dig into my problem for just another time - with positive result.
The 'save as TIFF file' option in PSE after image export from LR opens a detailed dialogue box offering amongst others 'jpg compression' within a TIFF-container (never realized this before, never heard about this concept, my fault). So my goals are met: Having an efficient process to finetune some images in PSE, having the results automatically stacked in the LR library module and having a considerable lower file-size footprint as compared to e.g. Photoshops native or TIFF with zip compression.

  • Whenever a user opens a document shared our SharePoint intranet he is prompted if he wants to open or save the file

We have a SharePoint intranet we use to share documents.  I have a user that every time he tries to open an Office document from this site, he receives the prompt: "Do you want to Open or Save this file?".  If he opens the file and updates it,
the changes are saved locally on his computer and not onto the website.
The issue doesn't seem to be the site or his permissions because if he tries to do this using my computer instead, he is able to open the file, update it and the updates are saved directly onto the website.  It only happens from this specific PC.
The PC is running Win7, IE9 and Office 2010 (same as mine).  I also compared the configuration for the different security zones between the 2 PCs and they look the same (internet, intranet and trusted sites).  I'm thinking there must be a setting
configured differently somewhere in his IE but I'm not sure what else could be causing his computer to behave differently than mine when performing this task.  Any advice would be appreciated...

    Hi,
Did you mean that you wanted to pop up the dialog of "You are about to open: <Name:file name><From:web site>,How would you like to open this file:Read Only, Edit", update the file and save it back to the current SharePoint library ?
    Please check two points below,
Check and make sure add-on "SharePoint OpenDocuments Class" is enabled via IE9(32-bit version) Tools->Manage add-ons from your user's PC. if it doesn't appear, please repair or change the Office 2010 from Control
Panel, make sure to install Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Support within
    Office Tools per this
    article.
If add-on "SharePoint OpenDocuments Class" has beed enabled, you need to check and disable the the Word
    Protected View per this
    article, then check result again.
    Thanks

yahoo is my home page. I updated to the new version of firefox per yahoo and now my tool bar has changed.
I want the old tool bar back? The old one had an X when I wanted to stop something (I just clicked on the X). Also, the old toolbar has a "home" that I clicked on and it went staight back to yahoo main page

Not sure whether for instance you initially had a Yahoo optimised version of Firefox, and have now overwritten it with an official Mozilla version. Although the Mozilla version should NOT add unwanted features, but the Yahoo version may well do.
If you merely need to find the Yahoo emails page quickly just add it as a bookmark or as a bookmark on the Bookmarks toolbar and make sure that is visible.
Clicking the star icon on the location bar whilst looking at your emails will bookmark the page.

I do not use Yahoo myself, and am not sure what add-ons are available. You could search yourself using

  • How to prevent end user to create a Query View and save back to BW Server?

    Dear All :
Do Someone know that how to setup authorization for Bex Query View Creation? We want to prevent end user to create a Query View to save back to BW Server his favorite folder. when our user run Bex Query, he can base on this query and use Bex Analyzer's save function to save a Query View and save into his favorite folder.
    My question is :
    1. Can we set up a Authorization to prevent end user to save Bex Query View?
    2. Or can I remove Save function from Bex Analyzer to prevent end user use save function, But Developer should not to be prevent .
Thanks for all of your kindly response.
    Best Regard
    Lawrence Kuo

    Hi.
Yes, you can do it like you outline in your point 1):
You need to use the authorization object S_RS_COMP for this. This object let's you control what parts/components of a query the user can do stuff to. So, in your case, you need to have a role for the users, where you do not grant create-access to the component QVW, and then you need another role for developers, where you grant full access or whatever you need for your developers.
See [this post|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/a6c54319-0e01-0010-20a4-fb81ad32f330?QuickLink=events&overridelayout=true&5003637661135] and the [SAP Help entry|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/80/1a6859e07211d2acb80000e829fbfe/content.htm].
You will also need to use the authorization object S_RS_COMP1. If you already have a productive system with users doing reporting, both objects will be maintained in one of the roles already.
You also want to consider using the object S_RS_PARAM to allow users to create variants for the variabel screen.
    Good luck.

  • Manual Save, Programmatic Save, and Save Entire Tab

There’s quite a few nice features native to LabVIEW that makes image capturing easy and convenient. In this post I want to focus on Manual Save, Programmatic Save, and Save Entire Tab.
    Manual Save
You can manually right-click any graph or plot during runtime and select Export > Export Simplified Image.  Choose a name for your *.bmp image and directory and save an exact image of the graph to disk.
    Programmatic Graph Save
This save feature is also available programmatically through LabVIEW methods.  When not running, right-click on the graph you’d like to save during runtime and create a reference.  Find and select the graph method “Export Image”.  Wire the ‘Image Data’ output from the node into one of the image write VIs found in the ‘Graphics and Sound’ > ‘Graphics Formats’ palette.  Make sure to append the correct file extension to your path.
    Save Entire Tab
Often the graph doesn’t contain all necessary information such as user parameters governing the process.  If these setting are available near the graph on a tab control, you can take a screenshot of the open tab and save it to disk.  The method is very similar to the single graph save, but simpler since the graph colors don’t need to be altered.
Here you can see the image “graph1 – 11Oct27.bmp” as produced by the above code.  Notice the angle cluster and graph title is also captured, giving more context to the displayed data.
Hopefully you will find these methods useful and easy to implement.  I go into a bit more detail in my blog should you find it helpful:
    http://www.dmcinfo.com/Blog/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/969/Programmatic-Saves-of-LabVIEW-Plot...

The only problem is that you posted to the idea exchange, whereas this is not an idea. I'll ask a moderator to move it.
