I want to add a SSD to a 13" MacBook.

Hi there!
I want to add a SSD to a 13" MacBook Pro I'm going to be purchasing soon. Although I don't no whether its worth getting an Apple SSD or installing my own and using the HDD as an external hard drive. Costs and labor included, whats the best option? I'm 16, and haven't done to much like this before, converting my black iPhone 4 into a white one is about all the experience I have.
I've researched into it all, and apparently it doesn't void your warranty replacing the original 320GB HDD with a SSD.
If I were to replace it by myself I would use this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-071-OC - Is that a good SSD?
Doing it by myself would mean I get the 120GB SSD inside the MacBook, then using the 320GB HDD as an external, meaning 440GB of storage space. Whereas using the 128GB Apple SSD (which I've heard is pretty bad!) would mean 128GB would be all I get storage wise.
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I don't mess up.
Any help would be really appreciated, Thanks!
Jack.

It is best that it is installed where the current HDD is.  That is your boot drive and that is where the fastest connect is located.

  • Want to add an SSD

I want to add an SSD to my Mac Pro.  My startup disk is 222Gbs.  I have 20Gbs of RAM.  All my Project and Event files are stored on a separate disk.  How big a SSD do I need to get so that FCPX will not be impacted?  Thanks.

    .Depends.
    Size of the SSD
    What you expect to achieve
    What you have now
For $145 Intel SSD 330 120GB will get you into SSD
You should shop and research brands but most any model today is fine, I think most issues with firmware and compatibility are behind us.
    For $150 you could also get 200MB/sec WD 10K VR 250GB SATA3/6G 64MB Cache / $200 for 500GB model, or 1.5TB WD Black
Too small and the write speed is not going to be any better than a mechanical drive in most cases.
10K and you have 3.4ms seeks, 7.2k drives and that is 8-12ms. SSD and 0.1ms
The OS does do a lot of small random I/Os and constant seeks - both to system and also to user home library - so I keep my library on SSD and put everything else on another drive.
    SSD + 10K VR + 2TB WD Black is a win-win for most.
A 240GB SSD has more channels (16) to feed the system than a 60GB SSD (4)

  • I want to add a SSD drive

to my early 08 MacPro desktop as the BOOT Drive, is the correct way to do this documented? I think I've seen one but I can't find it now.
    Thanks all.

Thanks Lordz, the exact detaisl of connecting the SSD to the motherboard and any poetential SATA controller issues with this Mac3.1 model were what i was looking for. I've found something useful on Diglloyd's Mac Performance Guide. Thanks again

  • Have an GE70 2PE and want to add an SSD

Hey all.  I'm interested in picking up an SSD for my GE70.  I'm a little confused as to what I can do.  With the reading I've done it appears I have 2 X mSata slots but I can only use one.  Am I looking for an SSD that uses both these slots?  Or am I totally out of it and any SSD will do?  I only plan on installing one even if I have two mSata slots.  Thanks and sorry for the confusing question?
Edit:  Really to simply the question,  what kind of SSD do I need to purchase to successfully use this feature on my GE70 2PE?

It's better to check MSI service center in advance.
As i know, warranty rule details are different in different countries. It should have a authorized center or shop to do this.

  • I want to add the Flash driver to my Macbook Air

    Hello,
I am using a Macbook Air with 128 GB flash driver.
In the Apple store, can they install additional flash driver to my computer ?
otherwise, is there any other method to buy or install additional flash driver ?
    Thanks.

Apple will not upgrade computers. You can buy after market solid state drives - see OWC for example. The upgrade is relatively simple and OWC has training videos showing how to do it as well as tool kits with the tools you'll need. While Apple won't install it for you, many 3rd party repair sites will.

  • Can i add a ssd to my macbook pro retina?

    Hi,
I would like to add a ssd drive to my macbook pro retina 13", but i dont know if it will work / if the size is good.
    The one i wanted to buy : http://www.cdiscountpro.com/informatique/ssd/samsung-produits-samsung-disque-dur -ssd-mz7pd512bweu-p1209666.htm
    Thanks for your answer

If you want to add an SSD it must be an external SSD. There is no space in the retina macbook Pro to put an additional SSD. The retina already has a flash drive.
The best you can do internally is upgrade the internal flash storage http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDAP12R480/

To prevent a sync when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - hold down the 'option' and the 'command' keys when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - key the keys down until the iPod/iPhone is listed under the Devices list in iTunes - this will prevent a sync from taking place and you will be able to change your settings.

Try using RecBoot to kick it out of recovery mode. If that does not work, try a manual install, as outlined in link below. If it STILL keeps entering recovery mode, you most likely need a new logic board.

    Hi,
You can replace the HDD but you can't ADD SSD to your computer. It does not have spare room. You can replace HDD with a new SSD up to current limit. I bought one Crucial 960Gb two weeks ago from Amazon, received it on Monday. Don't know where to put it because my laptops all have SSD's.

    Hi,
Yes, you can add it. A 160GB ssd is listed as compatible but I think that the capacity is not limited.
What I did when I replaced my hdd by a ssd was to perform a fresh install of Windows (the same version) using the product number (don't register Windows online!) at the bottom of the laptop. Then I waited for a message for registering the OS and registered it over phone. Perhaps a minimized image recovery created in HP recovery manager might restore the original system on a solid state drive. These are usually smaller than the original hard drives and the recovery process ends up with an error with the original image recovery disks.
edit: You will need a bracket (in case that you want to keep the old hdd in the secondary hdd bay) etc so the right part number is: 681976-001. Run the part number on google or ebay to get it.

  • Want to add internal hard drive to my Mac Pro

I want to add an internal hard drive to my Mac Pro bought in 2011
Running Lion 10.7.5  Processor is 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    Have a 1TB SATA
Do I need a 2.5" or 3.5" ? Any other criteria i should know about when looking?
    Advice is appreciated.

For a Mac Pro you'll probably want to go with a 3.5" drive. I would recommend Hitachi. I put a 2.5" new model Hitachi in my laptop along with an SSD and the Hitachi HD is unbelievably fast for a "spinner." If that's how there 2.5" models are there 3.5" models will only be better.
Make sure none of the drives you use have a variable rotational speed. Some of the Western Digital Green drives have that and they go to sleep a lot. When they sleep they have to wake up and when they wake up it causes a delay. It won't happen if the drives in constant use but it can be annoying. I believe the Green drives are intended primarily for backup use where speed isn't critical but energy savings and longevity are.
These are my opinions and observations.

  • Will Apple Add an SSD?

I just bought a 27" iMac a couple of months ago. Specifications: 16BG RAM, 2TB HDD, 2GB VRAM. Can I pay Apple to add a 256GB (Which is the highest Apple allows) SSD for me? I would like to dual boot Windows 7/8 on it so I can play games when I'm bored (Skyrim). Despite what I've been told I have done my research and partitioning a dual boot HDD does NOT slow it down if done correctly and in some cases can be faster than having two separate HD's in it. I would like to move OS X to the SSD and add Windows to my HDD with all the other content from my OS X on it (I know this is a complex layout). I don’t care about semantics I just want to know will Apple add an SSD for me if I pay them to do so.

Call someplace near you and see what they can do, double-checking it won't void any warranty.

  • How to add a SSD to 2010 iMac with 1tb drive

How to add a SSD to 2010 iMac with 1tb drive? I have a mid-2010 iMac with 1tb HD and would like to either replace the HD with SSD -or- add 256 or 400gb SSD to maybe the Optical Drive and use it as the boot drive. Is this possible with Model 11,2? i thought i\I'd read it was, but recently am reading my system is too old - OWC have SSD drives for newer models not Model 11,1 -or- 11,2

Any SATA SSD will work, whatever you are reading is incorrect.
You have 2 choices with this model-install the SSD in place of the HDD or the Superdrive.
If you are installing in place of Superdrive you will need some form of SSD Caddy-these can be found on the cheap at places like eBay, also OWC sell one called the DataDoubler.
    Guide:https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2389+Dual+Hard+ Drive/8643
If installing in place of old HDD you will notice that the propietary Temperature Sensor will not fit on the new drive, you will need to replace this with a sensor such as this or this
You will also need a 3.5inch to 2.5inch drive adaptor such as this
    Guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2389+Hard+Drive+Replacemen t/6284
If you still have doubts contact OWC as mentioned above, I would start deciding whether your Superdive is needed or if you want to swap out the HDD.
Hope this points you in the right direction

  • Can I add an SSD drive to an Omni 27?

Can I add an SSD drive to an Omni 27 (1200ev)  or do I have to replace the original drive? Ideally I'd like to retain the 2TB hard drive and have at least the OS on the SSD. Kind Regards, Brad

Hello Serguey.  I understand you'd like to add an SSD to your system.
Hard drives today use what is called a SATA connection.  Normally, you could not add a hard drive to one of these connections.  However, I believe you could add an expansion card to the slot which would give you more SATA connections.  Here is a link which contains products which fit this description.
However, I have a feeling that this card would not work very well because this is an All-in-One unit and it has a very limited amount of space inside.
Is there a reason you wanted to add an extra SSD as opposed to upgrading your main hard drive to an SSD?
I am not sure of any way to power off the monitor with the computer on other than by adjusting your power plan's settings.  This Microsoft article contains more information about power plans.
Let me know if this helps and have a great day!
