i want to boot windows 8.1 x64,using usb,i made usb bootable by using Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool,but it failed to make it bootable ,giving error of bootsect.i put bootsect.exe in Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool folder..than usb was bootable
but giving error of "please insert DVD" when installing windows.i m currently using 8.1 x32.please solve my problem.

Dual booting Windows on my Mac HD

My current HD in my MBP is partitioned into 4 and all of them uses the Journaled file system of OS X. I plan to wipe out one logical drive so that I can dedicate it to a Windows OS (version 7/8). I don't want to boot Windows in a virtualized environment but rather boot up on its own so that I can make use of my MBPs hardware.
I recently tried Boot Camp Assistant but it wouldn't format a single partition because all of them have been supporting OS X's file system.
How do I approach this? Is there some sort of software that will allow me to manipulate the drives and then allow me to painlessly install Windows without the hassle I encountered while using Boot Camp Assistant.
My best bet is to backup all the files I have in my other 3 partitions and then delete them so that I can give way to installing a new partition fit for Windows. I'm still adamant on experimenting because of the dangers I might encounter, say for example I might mess up my Master Boot Record and end up in frustration.
In short, this is dual-boot question - only with the difficulty imposed by Boot Camp, so I'm just looking for other alternatives/solutions on how to approach it

B oot camp only works when there is One Mac formatted partition. So if you have created other partitions on your drive you will have to Remove them first.
Leaving the EFI and the Recovery HD partition are fine.
Open Terminal and type diskutil list then hit the enter key. Post the output from that command.

Boot Windows XP while in Linux

Dear Archers,
I have a desktop with dual boot XP and Arch. Can I boot Windows XP when I am in Linux? I do not want to reboot the Linux and choose Windows. Instead I want to boot windows XP directly while inside linux. Is that possible?

As ngoonee said, switching "completely" while still running linux is logically contradictory, so the answer to that question is "no". To solve your issue, the question you should probably be asking instead is: "Is there any way I can get direct 3d hardware support inside a virtualized Windows XP so that I am not so limited as far as games go?". To which, provided your hardware supports modern virtualization, the answer is a resounding "maybe". Reading about and tinkering with Xen some time ago, it appears theoretically possible to get 1 virtual machine to function with direct/full 3d hardware support.. google "xen vga passthrough". It is still pretty early tech though, and would probably be more effort to set up correctly than it is worth. Even then, I am not 100% sure it will actually/sufficiently do what you are trying to accomplish, but I think it would. I do not fully understand it, to be honest, so I may be completely wrong. I personally have had no luck and gave up some time ago, though. Let us know if you have a better time.

Hyper-v cannot boot Gen2 guest from Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 8.1 x64 ISO - file format not supported, Gen1 works fine

I am new to Gen2 Hyper-V and so far I simply can't use it, because I am unable to install any (supported) guest OS from an ISO ...
So far I tried that on:
1. my HP Z230/i4770 workstation (Secure Boot disabled) host running Windows 8.1 Pro x64 (with Hyper-V feature enabled), can't boot any VM with supported OS ISO.
2. my home desktop/i3770K (secure Boot enabled) host running Windows 8.1 Pro x64, same result, error during VM boot from ISO, quoted below.
Synthetic SCSI controller (instance blah blah) Failed to Power on with Error 'The version does not support this version of file format'
Gen1 guests of course work perfectly fine with those ISOs, because emulated DVD IDE picks up the official Enterprise Evaluation ISO of either Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows 8.1 x64 Enterprise, perfectly fine and all works OK in Legacy boot mode.
When I create a new guest and select Gen2, then no matter if I check or uncheck the Secure Boot in virtual Boot Order options for the guest (while setting the SCSI DVD at top of course), it simply doesn't work, always same error. I tried first connecting
to VM to see if it prompts for key press, but it doesn't, the error is instant on Power on when (supported) ISO image is selected to be booted.
I verified that both of official Enterprise Evaluation ISO's of either WS2012r2 and W8.1x64 are bootable in both the UEFI mode (Secure Boot enabled) and Legacy BIOS mode using a physical computer.
What am I missing here???

FYI, above is wrong! it's not about linking ISO to virtual DVD or selecting "Install OS later", it's all about the location of the ISO file and share permissions on parent folder!
I was actually suspecting several issues, but haven't had time to test it, was thinking about issues like assigning (or not) some of initial settings during Gen2 VM creation, e.g.:
-Network connection through virtual switch or Not Connected (make no different if assigned or not)
-Memory above 4096MB (makes no difference if < or > 4096MB)
-ISO file location (makes huge difference!)
The ISO file CANNOT be placed on network share OR in shared folder on same local drive as the VHDX file (works fine if parent folder is not shared).
I can now replicate the issue easily every time and it always fails with file format unsupported message whenever I have the ISO file located either on remote network share, or (fails the same way too) when I have the ISO file placed locally (on host drive)
when simply a parent folder is shared... must be some permissions issue... and a pretty dumb one considering that in production environments nearly everything is placed on remote file servers ...
... so the moral of the story is, if you want to install Gen2 VM in win8/2012 hyper-V then you must copy the ISO file to Hyper-V host drive AND make sure the parent folder is not shared. works every time now! :)

Windows 7 Pro (x64) - Boot Camp 2.0 or 2.1? Boot Camp (64-bit)?

I recently got Windows 7 Professional (x64) - note it's NOT the beta - installed on my late '08 MBP (this was no cake walk...), and I have a question regarding Boot Camp versions. I'm pretty sure I have only Boot Camp 2.0 installed. When I try to run/install the 64 bit Boot Camp 2.1 version/upgrade for 64-bit Vista (BCUpdateVista64.exe), it simply won't start.
I read someplace that this is supposed to happen, as 2.0 is better for my current situation (Windows 7). Other posts seem to suggest I should download and install 2.1 in order to get everything working properly. Which is it?
Under Control Panel in W7, I have a blank icon that says "Boot Camp (32-bit)" and says application not found when clicked. Is there a 64-bit Boot Camp I can install?
I ask all this mainly because I suspect it may bring about some answers regarding trackpad support in Windows 7 (x64). Thanks in advance!

W520 hangs on Windows 7 Pro x64 installation, cannot boot live CD

Hi Everyone!
I decided to reach out to the community for some intelligence that I have not been able to obtain elsewhere. Here's my story in details in case someone can find a break on any of them ...
I purchased my W520 in November, 2011 with 1 year warranty and used it without issues until last week. One morning when I started the laptop, it loaded Windows 7 Pro x64, I logged in. After loading the desktop, I locked the screen/user and stepped out for a minute. When I came back, the screen was frozen and after a few minutes of waiting I manually powered off the laptop.
Upon restart, Windows 7 would hang on the logo screen and restart in a few minutes. I was able to restart under Safe Mode, however, which enabled me to create the rescue DVD's.
I decided to re-install the OS, but the installation would hang on the Windows logo screen again. This was also attempted with all accessories (usb kbd, usb wireless mouse, and display I also tried w/o the battery) disconnected. Then I thought, that it could be a bad hdd - I tried installing XP Pro but got the BSOD with a bad hdd error code. At that point, I attached the hdd to a working PC and ran checkdisk which found no errors. The problem persisted even with unpartitioned disk and a spare hdd that I had on hand. What intrigued me was that no linux live CD could load (it would freeze on the loading screen).
After this, I flashed the BIOS to the newest version without any issues during the flash process. The Windows 7 Pro x64 installation would hang again at the usual logo screen. I also tried with different DVD source... Memtest did not show any problems either.
Then I called an IT support guy who was not experienced with the issue and took the laptop for bench testing, and after four days of back and forth the IT company was inconclusive that the issues is most likely caused by a bad BIOS.
This happened around March 21, 2013 after Windows 7 installed updates (not sure if this could be related). The weird part is that the W520 worked fine for a year and four months and when it crashed I was able to use Safe Mode, access and flash BIOS, but was unable to run new installation or live CD's.
Is there anything that I am missing? Has anyone had the same experience? What is the conclusion according to you - it is really bad BIOS chip or just a UEFI-related setting?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean when you write "BIOS v1.40 settings that will make it possible to install Windows 7 Pro 64", but, you can download the 1.40 BIOS (which appears to be the most recent release) from this link: Device Driver File Matrix - W520 , and if you have any concerns about the BIOS settings not being appropriate, just enter the BIOS setup manager (tap the F1 key repeatedly when the laptop is booting) and select 'revert to defaults' or similar.

Third-party NTFS software interferes with the Apple NTFS drivers, which control whether you can see the Bootcamp partition in the Startup Disk option. As a test, can you uninstall all third-party NTFS software and check System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

Only follow these steps, it works for my:
Open "System Information" and note your "Boot ROM Version" (some like MBP51.007E.B06)
Navigate to "Utilities" in Finder and open the package contents of -BootCampAssistant.app- with right click. Duplicate the "Info.plist" file to the Desktop e.g. and open that with Text Editor.
You must locate the keys "DARequiredROMVersions"and "USBBootSupportedModels"
Add new strings with the information of your machine under booth keys (step 1), always respect the format, such as: <string>MBP51.007E.B06</string> for the frist key and <string>MBP51</string> for the second key.
Save changes and replace the original plist file (it may ask you to enter admin pass)
If you proceeded correctly you will see the checkbox "Create a Windows 7 USB install disk" enabled in Boot Camp Assistant.
Then you can follow the usual Boot Camp installation using your WIN8 DVD iso image . The assistant program will proceed resizing your disk partition and installing necessary drivers for your iMac.
I strongly recomends you to use thirld party's bootloaders like rEFInd (rEFIt) because of the Apple SMC versions of some old machines should not be able to boot properly from external devices like USB drives.

should be no problem.
Best case is you can activate online via Internet.
Worst case is you have to call Microsoft and explain that it is the same computer after a mainboard failure.

Please help. I have a Mac Book Pro ( late 2007- A1226) that I want to install Windows 7 ultimate on. I have boot camp 3.0 and I can set up the partition but when i click start installation, I get a black screen ( for a few seconds) then it goes to a grey window, which alternates between flashing the apple symbol and a circle with line through it. It will do this for however long I let it go for.
Would it be better for me to buy parallels software than keep persisting with this avenue.

First, make sure you ONLY have the wired Apple Keyboard and wired mouse connected.
You should have BootCamp Asst. 3.3 or 3.4 now I believe is the latest version.
Do you have the W7 disk or ISO download version?
When does the flashing start, after Windows 7 sets the NTFS formating and you click to install?
