No. Macs cannot run a system that is older than the hardware. You can however pick up a copy of Snow Leopard Server and run it in a virtual machine using Parallels.

  • I want to buy a MacBook Pro, but is it worth it?

The computer I buy is going to be my computer through High School and hopefully College, but a MacBook Pro is around $1000 to $1300 dollars right? So is it worth the cost?

A MacBook Pro will last about 3-5 years depending upon use and abuse about the same with a quality PC laptop.
AppleCare will cover factory defects for 3 years, after that your coasting on your wear and tear upon the machine, which the keyboard, trackpad, ports and optical drive would likely suffer the most it has been in my experience.
In my honest opinion, being a Mac user from day one and using PC's, unless you buy the near top end model Mac's, your really screwing yourself with the lower priced models.
So anything 13" and under in the Mac laptops you can do a HECK of a lot better with a Windows 7 laptop PC of the similar specifications. Instead of paying $1600 you could be paying $400-800.
The trouble with PC's you have to do your home work to make sure your getting a quality product, a high resolution screen on Windows 7 looks fantastic just like it does on OS X.
So unless your willing to spend over $2000 for 15" or 17" MacBook Pro + Windows 7 to keep your skills up, you likely should just get a Windows 7 laptop PC to begin with.
Better to "fit in", at college you can do almost what you want as long as you pass the classes, but when you apply for a job you need to play the part and have a appropriate looking machine to match, as the choice in platforms tells volumes about the person.
Usually creatives use Mac's, that's their symbol. Engineers use Windows for CAD/CAM and it's hardware is based a lot on interfacing with Windows and generic PC's, which a Mac is not, even though it can run Windows.
So a engineer using a Mac would be sending a signal your a administrative engineer, one who has experience already and is now  telling others what to do, as you don't need to interface with CAD/CAM or other hardware and thus can afford to carry a status symbol around, being a expensive Mac.  Naturally you haven't reached this stage yet as your not even in college yet, so arriving on the job with a Mac would be the wrong choice for a recent college engineering grad.
However arriving on the job at a top ad agency with a Windows PC insted of a Mac would be viewed as inappropriate, because Mac's are viewed as the creatives choice for generating content.
So when choosing a platform your also sending a signal, so it's likely best to have both skills under your belt, question you need to ask is what do you want to do, what are your skils. Then you can get a idea which platform is best for you. I advise both, but I don't advise ignoring Windows, only do that if you can afford to do so.

  • Wanting to buy a MacBook Pro, but...

I got two questions. My wife it's a hard core gamer, but she wants a MacBook Pro for "work" which for now isn't geared towards that type of tech.  In reality she wants something she can use while sitting at the couch and be happy instead of being anchored to the iMac...
I was looking at the 15" ones, without retnia display.
    Here are the two questions.
    1. What specs should I be looking at for someone who realitically won't be doing anything heavy except a little photoshop, at best, and mostly facebook, and writing?
    2. Why can't I seem to buy, customize, or anything else on the store online?

    Well that's better.
If her work involves Windows (or not) and PhotoShop, then I suggest one of the 15" MacBook Pro's, preferably the top end models, the non-Retina high res-anti-glare would be best for a laptop and the option to upgrade.
She is going to miss the large screen of the iMac and the 15" MBP, for comfort, will have to be sitting on a small table near the couch. If she uses the laptop on her lap for long periods, it's going to be very uncomfortable also the laptop will be more prone to liquid spills and being dropped.
So to extend the keyboard from the small table where the laptop will sit, she will need either a wireless or wired keyboard, and a wireless mouse.
I don't know, but if she is going to use the computer at the couch all the time, then why not just move the iMac there on a table next to the couch instead?
That's what we do here with our 17" MacBook Pro's, they are perched on tables next to the couch/lounge chairs so we can also watch TV and socialize. Wireless keyboards and mice.
A 15" screen is too small to be on a table on the side, it's going to force being used on the lap which is uncomfortable and dangerous for the machine. A 17" is ideal for siting on a small table, but Apple discontinued them.
Just find a table low enough that the iMac screen sit's at eye level and no need to have to purchase a new machine.

  • I really want to buy a macbook pro, BUT...

    BUT, ...
I'm in love with the size of my 12" powerbook. I travel for work all the time and I can't part with (the size of) my PB
    mdd dual 867 g4 2 gb ram, pwrbook 15 alum 1g   Mac OS X (10.3.1)

I disagree; there are many users out there that need or want the ultra-portibility of a 12" screen and Apple knows this. While the MacBook has been released initially to "satisfy all", it seems only sensical to me that Apple would introduce the much-speculated MacBook Thin (see the thread here: http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?t=296061 or here: http://www.macosrumors.com/). As I said in my post, don't expect anything in the near future, rather I would expect to see a MacBook Thin with Intel's new Core 2 Duo ultra low-wattage chips. It has been speculated that the Core Duo chips that Apple is currently using were released to merely bridge the gap between the aging Pentium line and the 'future" and to begin building on the platform of multi-core processors. (Some amazing things can happen once profits start slipping!) It seems most likely to me that these first MacBooks were also released to "bridge the gap" between the aging Power and iBooks of years past and the future of powerful, mobile computing and to allow for a platform for Apple to test out and begin its transition to Intel chips, and a new line of notebooks. Once the final kinks are worked out and the new chips from Intel are released, I would be shocked if Apple didn't continue to expand the MacBook family.
Of course this marketing theme doesn't exactly parallel the iBook vs. PowerBook of years past, but it most certainly seems plausible that Apple is going to expand the MacBook line even more. The difference between a 14" and 12" screen is a mere 2", and the difference between 12" and 13.3" is even less, but perhaps Apple will try to shave off dimensions elsewhere, say by taking out the iSight camera in an ultra, ultra portable unit?
All of this of course is mere speculation, something which is strictly forbidden by the Apple powers that be But nonetheless, to the original poster, I'd still say to wait for these new chips to be released by Intel and then to ultimately see Apple place them into their computers. The future should be interesting...

    Hello:
    Expensive is relative...
Microsoft makes a version (written native for the Mac) of Office:
    http://store.apple.com/us/search/microsoft-office-for-mac
Some of us use iLife - an Apple product that almost seamlessly translates Microsoft programs (for example Word to Pages) back and forth.  You can always export in a Microsoft format...

Nobody in these forums represents Apple or any store.  So to find out whether you can buy something, you must contact stores or consult their websites directly yourself.   If not available in the online store, try contacting a retail store and see if they can make a special order

  • I want to buy a macbook pro

    Basically starting uni in september.
want to buy a macbook pro as i understand they are awesome? dont want the air as the pro is much better performance i understand.
basically do the prices stay the same and my budget is around the £1.1k mark so im looking at the 13inch 2.8ghz version.
will they release new versions this year and if so do prices usually rise etc?
    a little advice is appreciated.
    thanks

The MBPs have maintained a price structure for a couple years, with changes occuring at intervals within those prices.  That means, the high end 15" has gone through three processor upgrades since last summer and one secondary graphic processor.  If you look at the 13" that is at your price point today, more than likely by next summer it will have a faster processor at that same price.  And the current processor may no longer be available.
So if you have a fixed amount of money to spend, consider holding off until it is closer to the time you will be going to the university as you will be able to buy more computing power for the money.
No one knows exactly what changes there will be, just the history of these things gives clues as to what will happen qualitatively.

  • I want to get a macbook pro but Im afraid of all these problems

I need to get a new laptop for 3D(Maya) work and some Design.. I want to get a macbook pro but I am very very worried of all these problems Ive been reading about. Whine? Too Hot? sigh....

Well here's a simple solution if you don't feel like sending in your MBP 2, 3, and 4, maybe even 5 times to AppleCare for recurring issues: Wait until the next revision of the MBPs which will hopefully bring about the introduction of the Core 2 Duo (Merom) chips. It shouldn't be too far off in the future and if the new chip is as good as everyone's saying it is, the wait will be well worth it. The CPU whine of my MBP is HORRIBLE and to me it makes the machine utterly useless when I'm working in the lab as I need to concentrate; I'm back on my PowerBook.
I realize that my situation is unique in that I'm working in a sound-sensitive environment. However, I paid the similar price tag on my PowerBook and this machine has been flawless. I bought the AppleCare for it and have yet to send it in for anything. My MBP is maybe 4 months old and has been to Apple's repair depot 4 times. In fact, for the first 2 and a half months of ownership, Apple had my MBP more than I did.
Apple may have fixed the problems by now with their newer MBPs but that's anyone guess, and it's solely a gamble as to what week build MBP you'd get and what kind of problems it will have.
My advice: I strongly recommend waiting if you can. Even if you don't work in a sound-sensitive environment, you will get great peace of mind knowing that your computer will perform, look, and sound like a well-built, $2000+ machine (hopefully).
