I want to buy an ipad 2 with 3g in the US and wanted to find out if it will work in South Africa or is the 3g locked by the service provider

I want to buy an ipad2 3g in the USA and wanted to find out if the 3g will work with a South African sim card or is it locked to a US service provider.

Make sure you get the GSM (AT&T) model, not the Verizon model.
By the way, this forum is for the iPod touch, not the iPad.

2nd generation ipod touch is pretty much no good anymore?  It is not able to upgrade to iOS5.1 and so will not work with many Apps in the iTunes store?  Is there a way to find out if the App will work before you download?

Look to the app developer to provide that information when browsing the iTunes Store.
The iPod Touch still works, so what's your problem with it? It still works with older apps, it still does what it's intended to do.
If you aren't happy then sell it and buy a new one.

  • Will an iPad work in South Africa?

I spend most of my year in South Africa. I'd like to purchase an I-pad in the States and use it in South Africa. Will it work there? A guy at the Genius Bar in NYC told me if I get an ipad with the AT&T plan, it will work in South Africa via SIM card.

I Just returned from s Africa. You can buy 2 gb including chip for US 24 from Vodacom at any mall.  Make free phone calls using a VPN into US and use data plan over google voice and talkatone app
3g speed is ok in cities and along major roads
lots of free wifi in hotels usually with some max 50 or 100 mb
vpn from witopia - can watch us tv.

  • If I buy a Mac and iPad online, will I still be able to claim warranty at an Apple Authorized Service Provider?

If I buy a Mac and iPad online, will I still be able to claim warranty at an Apple Authorized Service Provider?
I am going to buy a Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display and iPad from www.topbuy.com.au . It's a legit website, but they say the items have topbuy warranties, not apple ones. They say I have to send off my faulty device to them, and they will fix it, but I don't want to do that. I just want to walk into an Apple store, tell them the problem and have a happy ending, like what's supposed to happen. Will I be able to do this?
    Thanks

Apple warranty is good at any Apple service provider, AASP or store.
But you seem to be reaching far to defend that "it's a legit website", especially when they seem to be directing you from seeking certified Apple service.
As the saying goes: If it looks like a duck, and it sound like a duck, it's quackers to bypass an Apple store or Apple online to save a few $$.  Well, something like that.

Or just carrying the phone in your pocket? Just saying.....

From your screen name would it be safe to guess that you will be using it in Egypt? If your carrier uses is a GSM network you can do as Chris suggests.
From the Apple page http://www.apple.com/eg/buy/   there is a link to Arab Buisness Machine, they sell the iPad 2 and offer local support should any problems arise.

  • If I buy a ipad mini with cellular, and not sign up for cellular service, can I use the onboard GPS, or does it depend on the cell signal since it is aGPS

If I buy a ipad mini with cellular, and not sign up for cellular service, can I use the onboard GPS, or does it depend on the cell signal since it is aGPS?

Right. But as I understand it, the aGPS is a function that speeds location using cell signals, but isn't necessary for the GPS signal. I can buy a plugin device that is a real GPS that I can use with my iPad mini. However, I would need an app for maps. I was wondering if anyone had used one of these.

  • Can we buy iphone from one country and then change the service provider

    Hi,
I wanted to know if I buy an iphone from india today can I change the service provider when i come to U.S.A. for my studies in Jan

It seems to depend on the country where you bought your phone.
In Australia, with a post-paid account I can have my carrier unlock the phone for free so I can use the phone on a pre-paid account in the States when I am there.
My carrier here gets paid regardless as I am on a 24-month contract.

If nothing else works, you might try this one. It has worked for many others ...
Use iTunes to do a reset to factory default condition. Always be sure to do your backups before fiddling with your iPad. You might do both the iCloud and the iTunes backup, just to be sure!

Re: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgradein response to pacoKAS
SOLVED:  IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:
I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.
Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.
THE FIX:  FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device.  Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!
To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now!  :-)
Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.

  • When I first bought it, it was meant to use all the services provided by Great Apple including the new LTE service as a main service for such device. Now I just realize that such service does not match with the model I have ... Pease advise ..

    Greetings,
I hope this email finds you well. I bought my iPhone on December 1st, 2012 with a track order W459517623. When I first bought it, it was meant to use all the services provided by Great Apple including the new LTE service as a main service for such device. Now I just realize that such service does not match with the model I have, as per this link:
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/
    Model A1429
    (GSM model)
                                                                  Saudi Arabia - Mobily
The model Apple sent is A1428
I believe that such service should be provided to my devices too. Also, Apple always find best ways to solve such queries.
    Please advise me
    Thank you and Regards,
    Abdulrahman

I'm assuming you bought it via the Apple Online store. Contact them. Use the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page. Did you buy the phone from the store in the country you intend to USE the iPhone? If you bought the phone in the US store and intend to use it OUTSIDE the US, you only have yourself to blame, as they shipped the CORRECT phone for use in the US.

        Hi there T&P63385!
Look no further! I have the answer for you! You can add a new email account to your android device by following these steps: http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=31401
Now I do want to let you know that your phone has a "main" gmail account. If this "main" gmail account was the one you deleted it may be best that you reset your phone and activate it to your new gmail address.
The reason I recommend doing this is all of your purchased application information is also tied to your gmail.
Ensure your personal information is backed up (contacts, pictures, etc) and follow these steps to Hard Reset your phone:http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=31308
Let me know if you have any other questions!
