I want to close the lid without it going to sleep

I want to close the lid of my MacBook without it going to sleep so i can leave things going overnight e.g. moving large files. Does anyone know how to do this? I dont want leave the lid open as it will burn the screen out.
Please help.

Why don't you have your screen set to power off after a certain amount of time? System Preferences->Energy Saver. There are 3rd party utilites that will allow you to disable sleep when closing the lid.....but if your only concern is "burning out" your screen....seems kind of pointless to me when you can just have the display go to sleep.

  • After updating my mac, I can no longer close the lid without it going into a sleep mode, that I can only wake by powering off.

    Ever since I have updated my Macbook Pro to the newest version of OS, it will go into a sleep mode when I close the lid that I can only wake with powering off the entire computer. I used to be able to close the lid for the night, open it in the morning, and it would be like I never even left it overnight. Now I try to wake it up with pushing everything possibe. Is this new to the update? I even tried to set the settings to "never sleep". Help!

    Try Reset SMC.

    Choose the method for:
    'Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own'.
    Hope this helps.

  • My mac mac book pro w retina display will not go to sleep when I close the lid or put it to sleep.

    My mac mac book pro w retina display will not stay asleep when I close the lid or put it to sleep.
    I put the computer in my bag and when I open it again the machine is so hot I can almost not touch it.
    I am affraid that the hardware is allready fried.
    Also when I press a key to restart after it has been idle for a few minutes it often takes up to a minute to wake back up.
    This machine is bran new..
    What should I do?

    Try a SMC reset:

    *Want to close the present window before going to the url page.
    Hi,
    I'm using the script below to go to url function in actionscript 3, and it works fine:
    btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,e);
    function e(e:MouseEvent):void{
    navigateToURL(new URLRequest("http://www.angelfire.com/in/HisTruth/copyofindex.html"));
    It's fine but I want the first window to close and then open up into the one its pointing to.
    How should I add the correct script to this?

    I am not sure what you want between the title and your description, but try adding _self as the window argument...
    function e(e:MouseEvent):void{
    navigateToURL(new URLRequest(http://www.angelfire.com/in/HisTruth/copyofindex.html), "_self");

  • How can I select shutdown & close the display w/o going into sleep mode?

    I have learned to wait untill the MBP full shuts down before closing the display. In the past I have pressed shutdown closed the display only to find out later the MBP goes into sleep mode before fully shuting down. When I reopen the display the computer finishes the shutdown process or worse the battery is dead.
    I would like to select shut down, close the display and walk away while the computer completes the shutdown process.
    Is there any setup options or apps. that will allow this?
    Thanks, Joe

    Well hello there, and welcome to Macintosh.
    Unfortunately you can't change anything to stop this from happening. The shutdwn process goes about its business killing processes and applications that have been running. The sleep process interrupts ALL business going on in the OS, and puts the machine into low power mode, as it is not aware of the nature of the running processes (in this case, the shutdown process), knowing only that they must be slept and the machine dropped into sleep mode. You gotta wait it out before you close the lid.
    I would suggest sending a message in OS X feedback requesting this as a feature!

  • MB switches to external display upon closing the lid - instead of going to sleep... what to do?!

    Since I updated to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) my MacBook doesn't go to standby mode anymore, when i close the lid with an external display attached.
    Instead it switches the external display to be the primary display and keeps on running.
    It seems to me there used to be an option to choose how the MacBook reacts on the lid being closed. But as desperately as I looked fr it i couldn't find it.
    Is there still any way to tell my MB that it should just power down, when i shut it, even with another display attached?
    Hopefully it is just hidden away somewhere in the preferences... would be really stupid if Apple had taken that feature out...

  • Why does itunes and other media continue to play when i close the lid on my macbook pro 2011???

    Hey, I am new to mac and still getting used to it (making the transition from windows), its amazing! Anyhow, I cannot figure out why my itunes and other media like youtube or a film on vlc player continues to play once the lid has been closed. I thought that when i close the lid the macbook should then sleep. It does everytime when there is nothing playing. The little white light on the bottom right hand corner of the book is on but music continues to play.
    The sleep option always works. If I press the power button and choose the option sleep it does so etcc.
    Is this normal and am I just being stupid or is there a problem??
    I bought the laptop from ebay, its a macbook pro late 2011 17inch. I dont have apple support and might have to make a trip into London to the mac store however I was hoping someone can help me...
    Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
    Thanks if you can it is muc appreciated....!!

    hey, thanks for the reply. I don't know to be perfectly honest. When I close the lid without any music playing it sleeps fine. How could I check?
    So basically I pressed the power button and pressed sleep. The laptop turned off and the little white light turned on no problem. I did the same thing with closing the lid and it went to sleep no problem. (Can you confirm that when the little white light is on it means the laptop is sleeping)??.
    I then had itunes playing and pressed the power button and when i pressed sleep the music paused then 6 seconds later it went to sleep. I then had itunes playing and closed the lid and the music kept on playing even though the white light was on.

    Actually, I don't think you need to have it plugged in.

  • Shut down or just close the lid

    Im a new Macbook Pro user. Do i need to shut down every thime im finished using my macbook pro, or just shut the lid. If i just shut the lid what power state will this put the macbook into? Im keen to make the most of my battery life.
    Many thanks
    Steph

    Hi, i have a Macbook Pro 13 inch. And i usually just closed the lid after i have finished working with it.
    Then i used it again tomorrow morning for work.
    But my friend suggested that it is not safe for mac book pro users to just close the lid without shutting down the mac. It is said that if the MBP still using standard SATA Harddrive then it is wise to shut it down first, because the Harddrive still have some sort of mechanism. It is different from the SSD drive.
    If the Mac uses SSD drive than its fine just to close the lid without shutting down.
    Is it true? maybe someone has some informatioan about this. it would very helpfull coz i really love my MBP
    thanks

    Press any key on the wireless keyboard after you close the MBP and it goes to sleep. The computer will wake up with the external monitor as its display. This is called Clamshell mode.

  • How can I close the lid on my Mac Book Pro (late 09, 10.6.8) without it going into sleep mode?

    I recently moved my room around and such, and now it's become more useful (I also purchased an HDMI adaptor which helps) to use my TV as a display, especially when I'm recording music, watching movies online, etc. Problem is, the HDMI cord I'm using is only 1.8 ft. so my computer has to sit in the middle of my desk, thus taking up the bottom portion of my TV screen when open.
    I know there's an app out there that keeps the computer from going to sleep, but I don't like it because I forget it's on and Ill toss my computer in my backpack to go to the library, I get there and it's a million degrees....
    If it matters for anything the setup is as follows:
    13 inch MBP, 8 gb ram, 2.26ghz intel core 2 duo, Os X Version 10.6.8. Late 09 I believe.
    I'm using the mini display port to HDMI adaptor (made by apple, not a knockoff if it matters).
    When using my Tv I'm using a wireless mighty mouse (bluetooth) and the apple on screen keyboard.
    Also, it's not at the top of my priorities, but eventually I'll probably have the computer set up next to the Tv, I've got the displays set up so that the Tv is on top of the computer display (I understand how to move them) but is there a way to make it so that when the lid is open, it acts as two, non-mirrored, displays, and when I close the lid it switches to one display (the Tv), and obviously, when no display is connected, it uses the internal display as it's sole display?
    And lastly, is there a way to transmit sound through my Mini Display port to my TV? It's not the end of the world if not in 10.6, I saw something about how to do it in lion, but that's not enough of a reason for me to upgrade. I use a sound system so like I said, not the end of the world, just would be really nice, and I feel like after the money I've dumped into apple for this computer, it should do about anything I ask it to short of making me waffles in the morning (however, apple, if you release some sort of add on to do this, I'll be at the midnight release wearing a shirt that says"waffle enthusiast".)

    You can't but you can wake it up immediately after.

  • Not able to close the lid of laptop without it going to sleep

    I have a 3000 V100 when I am use the external monitor connected to the port replicator when I close the lid the laptop will go to sleep.  I have changed the setting for it not to go to sleep and it holds until I log out and log back in it changes them back.  In fact I have checked if you change them click on apply and then OK and then check them again they have already change back.
    I was told by support to upgrade the BIOS, Power Drive and Power management which have been done.  I was then told this is the way it works unless you use your image.  That does not make any sense.  If you have a laptop an it is connected to Port replicator with a external monitor then why would you need the laptop cover open.
    Is there a solution for this problem, if so what is it

  • How do I get my lap top to shut down when I close the lid?

    I have tried to switch on the function that shuts down my lap top when I close the lid but am either dumb or lazy and gave up too quickly.... any help would be greatly apprecated.

    Thanks Poikkeus
    My mac goes to sleep when I close the lid pretty quickly but when I open up the lid it opens up again where I left off.
    Some nice person burgled me some time ago and stole my mac so I want to force my mac to close right down so when someone else opens up they are forced to open up in guest.  I can then track my mac without risking them accessing my personal details etc.

  • Can I keep my MacBook Pro from sleeping when I close the lid?

    Is there a way to close the lid on my MacBook Pro without putting it to sleep so that it will continue to play music via USB to my stereo?
    I want to use my Macbook Pro to play music on Amarra or iTunes via USB to a DAC connected to my stereo.  The MBP will be on a shelf in my stereo cabinet where the lid cannot remain open.  I do not wish to connect an external mouse, keyboard or display to the MBP.  Is there a way to keep playing the music with the lid closed?
    Thanks.
