I want to completely erase and rebote my computer

Someone just told me how to do this but they were talking about disk utilities and I can't figure out what that is. I looked on my installation disc one and it talks about selecting a destination but I don't know where that is located either. Can anyone explain either of these or give me more specific instructions of how to completely erase my laptop (to get it back to the factory settings) and re-install everything.

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
Use the Tiger installer disc that came with the computer (gray label.)
Drive Preparation
1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. DO NOT click on the Install button.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.
Alternatively, from the installation options select Erase and Install which does the same thing.

  • My music won't sync to my iPhone 4s after it got completely erased and then my computer's hard drive crashed.

I was updating to iOS6 and I accidentally knocked out my USB hub when I was moving the printer cable. My iPhone cord, which was in the USB hub, obviously got disconnected. I found out the hard way that I had to format my phone, or it would just be a really expensive paperweight. I did.
A couple days later, I added all of my country music back onto my phone just so I had something to listen to. I listen to a wide variety of music, however, so that was just a small portion of my library. A week and one day after the operating system incident, I got the good ol blue screen. I'm used to them, even though my laptop was purchased in May 2011 and I shouldn't have to be used to them, so I just tried to fix it, to no avail. After running the Dell diagnostics, I was greeted with "Hey! You're hard drive is done!" in computer speak. Numerous expletives later, I booted my computer into safe mode and manually copied all of my files to my terabyte external hard drive.
I've got my computer back now and I copied my files back onto my computer. They're all in iTunes, but I can't click and drag them onto my phone. When I drag the songs, the icon has the number of songs and the circle with a slash through it. I'm not technically incompetent...so I'm thinking that Apple is so afraid that I'm going to steal the music I paid for that they're not allowing me to move it back to my phone. If someone were to prove me wrong and solve my problem, I'd actually be a really happy camper. So.....anyone?
    Thanks!!!!!
    A

I solved my own question. So for anyone else who has this problem, here's what to do.
    1. Plug in your iPhone. Sync it with the computer.
    2. Click on your phone in the sidebar and click on your phone's music tab on the top right.
    3. Select that you'd like to sync music from this library.
    4. Select what you want to sync. Yes, it will delete the current music off of the phone but if you've imported that into your new library, then you'll just put it right back on. Your phone currently thinks it's supposed to sync with the hard drive that doesn't exist, so that's the problem.
    5. Press apply, then press sync (lower right).
    6. It should sync everything....I hope....That's what it looks like it's doing.
    7. Never accidentally unplug your phone during an update again.
    8. Hope to whatever god you pray to that your hard drive doesn't crash again.
    9. Enjoy your day

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with a visit to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Music is completely erased and then synced again...

Each time I connect my iPhone to iTunes, all of my music is erased and then moved back onto my phone. This is a huge inconvenience, as I am using the "convert to 128 kbps AAC" option and syncing the music takes a few hours because of this. Does anyone have any idea as to how to fix this?

Download and update your iTunes to 9.1.1.12.
    Likely you have 9.1.1.11.

  • Unable to manually manage music and videos on iPhone 4 without erase and sync, same computer!

Ok, so I know you all have heard this before but I do believe my case is rather unique, and quite frustrating.
I purchased an iPhone 4 and synced it to the same computer I am using now - created the playlist and used it to sync with phone. Worked great for awhile; but one day I contracted some nasty malware and had to wipe my computer and reinstall my OS (Windows 7). Albeit my music library was on my external HDD which survived the onslaught. I obviously had to reinstall iTunes afterwards. The playlist was gone on reinstall.
Afterwards I still didn't see an issue with my iPhone and iTunes: When I plug it in it syncs, everything seems to be working accordingly.
But I recently transferred some new music from a CD to my iTunes and wanted to throw those songs on my iPhone, the drag and drop method I was so very used to did not work and I noticed that "manually manage music and videos" was uncheck under my devices summary.
When I attempt to check this option in iTunes it gives me a popup notification telling me I need to erase and sync in order to use this option because my 'iPhone is synced with another library". Again, I DID have to reinstall iTunes after reinstalling my OS.
I have tried all the tricks that google could supply me with with no avail; authorizing, stopping the sync from automatically starting.... yada yada - none of these cookie cutter methods have worked for me.
    Here's a too long didn't read:
    >iPhone 4 was working fine - used playlist to sync with.
    >Had to reinstall OS (Windows 7) Playlist gone.
    >Reinstall iTunes.
    >iPhone still syncs with library, no error messages on connect.
    >Unable to manually manage music and videos without erase and sync.
    >None of the usual methods work.

Hmm, I will say after posting this and looking at the related threads it seems I can only either use manually manage or sync.
I was using sync before but since the playlist disappeared I was syncing with I simply want to add music to my phone without deleting everything. Is this possible?
If I use "manually manage music and videos" will it delete everything or just the music and videos? It doesn't specify...
Could I just create a new playlist and sync it with that? If so how?
The bottom line is it isn't that big of a deal if I need to simply rebuild my iPhone music library but losing my configuration, contacts etc is not an option. Optimally I would just like to be able to add my new music to my iPhone without having to rebuild my library.

  • Is there a way to get music onto my ipod from a CD that I lost after I put the songs onto iTunes, but then had to completely erase everyting on my computer?

Yeah, so this is what happened. I had an old iPod nano, and then my computer crashed and deleted eveything. Then, I got a new iPod, and I want to put songs that I had on a CD that I already had on iTunes before my computer crashed onto my new iPod, but I lost the CD. Is there a way for me to find those songs??? Kinda impossible, but is there genius out there that can help me out? Thanks.

The songs will only be where you put them.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Your music should be there.

  • Babylon addon installed without my consent. I want to completely remove it from my computer, but how ?

I was trying to take a download but MediaGet and Babylon appeared to self install. I have removed most of these but the
Babylon addon can only be disabled. I wish to remove it from the computer altogether, and cannot see how.

Thanks for that, but after I tried it I still had files and a folder on my system which linked to Babylon. Eventually I had to search the registry, which I am never happy about. It is all cleared now.
Incidentally I do use Revo Uninstaller which usually does a great job.

The easiest way to do this is look under File in the menu bar. Then choose Export Bookmarks. This will allow you to save them to a location of your choice. Once you have reinstalled everything choose Import Bookmarks to add them back to safari.
