I want to connect an old eMac to an LCD TV.

Hi, all. Thanks for reading this.
I visited my parents and found my old eMac from 9 million years (and Macs) ago. It's the 700 MHz Power PC G4 model.
I would like to connect it to my LCD TV. The TV has PC inputs (VGA) and I have the Apple mini VGA adapter and a VGA cable that I know works. I have it connected now, but the TV says "Not Supported." The TV works fine connected to my MacBook Pro and other PCs. I know that the eMac in question is a bit old- but it's a Mac!
I just want what's on the computer to display on my LCD. I'm not terribly concerned with screen resolution or whether or not I can use "screen spanning."
Does anyone have any ideas?

The eMac allows only display mirroring, so what goes to an external will be limited to the res on the eMac, and with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The video chipset in that eMac is pretty dated---that might be where the trouble lies.
There are other factors like color depth and refresh rate. The TV will have to be able to work with the limited options that the eMac video hardware offers. I would start by setting the res to 1280 X 960 (the largest I have on our eMac 700) and millions of colors. See if you are offered different refresh rates. If so, try different ones
Something more basic: Have the TV connected and ON when you start the eMac. That helps the compuer find the second display. Also look on the TVs options to see if there is a setting for a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Beyond that, I'm out of ideas!

My old LW+ has been connected to my equally old Quadra 700 and Performa 6116 via the old appletalk protocol. Since i rarely play with those anymore, I wanted to hook up the printer (which still prints beautifully) to the new iMac. Trouble is, I have no idea if technology exists to go from the appletalk technology (or even the old serial port) to, say, usb...or maybe even ethernet, and if 10.4.10 will even recognize the old beast. If you're willing to turn on one of the old computers as print server, and it's hooked up to ethernet, install Appletalk Bridge on the old server, and your printer should show up in Printer Setup on OS X.
Asante and Farallon made ethernet-localtalk bridge devices that are now available on eBay. My Farallon one doesn't work with my 100baseT network, so I can't really recommend that approach.

I want to connect my old 23" cinema display to new iMac 5K retina

I have just ordered a brand new iMac with 5K retina display & would like to link up my old 23" Cinema display to it so I can continue to have my dual screen workstation as I have done since 2005.
I could do with a little advice before it arrives as to what adaptor I will need in order to connect the two.
I am currently connected to an old 17" MacBook Pro so am unsure of how it will work with the new iMac?
The old cinema display has a 3-cable configuration (USB / Firewire / DVI cable) connecting from the power adaptor over to my MacBook Pro.

My current setup is this, my non apple router is accessed wirelessly by all my computers, ie imac, mac mini and macbook pro, ipad & iphones for internet.
My printer is in another room so therefore I cannot connect the AEBS (airport extreme base station) with an ethernet cable (I have intially in order to update the firmware and other updates) so in following the attached guidelines are you saying that I have to have the AEBS connected with the ethernet cable to the router?
I was hoping to wirelessly connect.
The wish is that all my devices can print wirelessly
What has happened though is that I can access the AEBS wirelessly, but it has disabled me from my router so I cannot connect to the internet neither to that network

Connecting an old printer

I have an old laser printer that I want to connect to my eMac thru the ethernet port, but the printer has only a printer port (the symbol is the two side-by-side arrows, one facing left, the other right). What is the cheapest type of adapter I can get for this printer? I only need to connect one Mac.

It think that is the old symbol for the Apple Serial port, an RS-485 standard vs. the old RS-232 standard. If that is the case, to connect to the eMac would require a bit of manipulation such as first getting an RS-485 to RS-232 adapter then getting a Serial to USB adapter and then plugging it into your eMac's USB port. Then you have to hope the proper drivers will work with OS X and the Serial to USB adapter, etc.
Considering that Laser printers are pretty cheap now, at least the black and white ones which I assume this old one is, you are probably better off getting rid of the printer and getting something more modern and compatible.
Alternative, you could get an old Mac and hook the printer to that and then network it with your eMac as some sort of print server. But again, I think that may be a lot of effort and maybe cost just to try and reuse an old laser printer.

The Late 2009 model 6,1 has a Mini DisplayPort not the Mini-DVI. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When the System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.

As an aside, the current installed operating system on this old iPhone is 4.2.1, but that wasn't one of the selectable options in the operating system list dropdown below. Don't know if that makes any difference.

1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for.

You need the Airport card OR Airport Express but not both. Considering the age of your machine, I recommend Airport Express as you will find other uses for it whenever you replace the eMac.
To set up the AE, you do need OSX 10.4 or higher.

First, are you using Wifi for Internet on the MBP?
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list, Wifi on the MBP.
In Shating on both, enable File Sharing, Screen Sharing, & Web Sharing on both.
Then with the Ethernet cable between the two, find the IPs of both, or use Finder>Go>Connect to Server>Browse... see what shows up.

I assume that you want to access files stored on the older drive. Check eBay for an Adaptec Power Domain 2906 or 2930 PCI SCSI controller card for Macs (there are PC versions which won't work). Either of these cards has an internal 50-pin connection designed for the same 50-conductor ribbon cable used with that hard drive. Mount the drive internally and connect one of the unused molex power connectors to it. If you just want to connect the drive occasionally, you'd want to install it in an external SCSI housing that would typically have a pair of Centronics-50 ports on the rear. The Adaptec 2906 has an external DB-25 port, so a standard Centronics-50 to DB-25 SCSI cable would be needed. The Adaptec 2930 has an external HD-50 port on the card, so you'd need an adapter or different cable to connect it to the external case.

Thanks. I wish I had that info earlier. Unfortunately I got a set of OS emac installation disks and tried to install and start over which basically erased everything. There were 16 disks and when I got to disk twelve it "failed" and asked to try again. I went through the whole process again and same message again.
Now I am stuck with the installer which wants me to install disc 2 to continue installation. It won't let me do anything else.
I know there must be a way to erase and start over but I'm not sure where to start. Any ideas?

Depends on what input plug you'll be using on your TV. VGA, DVI, Composite or HDMI. You'll need a Mini-DVI adapter and a cable from that to your TV. If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.

If the eMac supports being connected to another Mac via Firewire Target Disk mode (which I believe it does), you can connect both Macs this way for the import and for manually transferring any and all data from the eMac.
