I want to copy edited files to a second computer, do I need to export the catalog or can I just copy

I find that I edit files on my laptop but I want the files, with their edits to reside on my desktop computer also.
I had been exporting the folder as a Catalog, but can't think of shy I can't just copy the folder with both the RAW and XMP files and import the folder on the Desktop PC. This option seems to work just as well as the catalog option.
Any reason I should choose one way over the other?
Using Lightroom 4.2
Thanks
Kelvin

The advice you've received previously seems pretty solid, so let's troubleshoot the problem.

Let's concentrate on this portion of text only.
Gray screen: usually means non-woriking or uninstalled HD
Won't repair: makes perfect sense, since you no longer have access to HD
Advised to copy HD and Leopard installation to a new drive, then erase the HD and reinstall: This is the most important text. It seems you don't use a backup drive. And since your HD is damaged/not working, you need to do the following: (1) remove the faulty drive, (2) install the new drive, (3) when you turn on your MBP, you may need to erase the newly installed HD, and this is where you have the problems. Describe, in detail, what's happening on your MBP screen. Is it still gray? What message are you getting? Where is it asking you for a password, and when?
I'm intereste: since your MBP drive is dead, how are you accessing this forum?

    Hi, EJ13.
I see you are having issues with backing up you iPhone and have tried a couple troubleshooting steps.  There are a couple more steps I could recommend in the article below.

aha yes - Lion has changed you harddrive setup and added a "recover partition" Now it gets - not technical - but time consuming.
    try:
insert your Snow Leopard installer DVD.
    Reboot
Immediately After startup sound, hold down ALT.
You'll be presented with several options. Select your install DVD and continue.
    If it doesn't fail:
Once the installer has started, go t the top menu and select "disc utility"
go to the "partition" screen and erase all partitions back to one single partition
return to the installer and install that older OS X version
give to buyer minus the price of a Lion upgrade
If it fails, go to step 1 and boot from your "recovery drive".
once the installer has sarted, go to the top menu and select "disk utility"
erase the drive partition that used to contain OSX Lion - this will remove your private data, all apps and OSX Lion.
Restart, hold own "eject" and remove the DVD, and shut down again.
You'll have to hand it over to the new buyer in this state. Tell him the machine will boot into the Lion installer but he'll have to create an App Store account to download and install OS X Lion. One again, give him a reduced price equal to the price of the Lion upgrade. Way I see it, no other options remain.

  • How to edit a library on second computer and then merge it back?

    Hi there,
My main 500GB library is on an older Mac Mini and I've got a snappy new Macbook Pro. I want to keep the library on the Mini but it's getting too big for the HD there.
I've done some tests with Duplicate Annihilator (DA) and it looks like I can really shrink the library by removing dupes.
I've tried running DA on the mini but it would take several days to complete and I can't seem to keep my family from opening Aperture during that time. According to DA docs it's very dangerous to have both DA and Aperture running against a library at the same time.
So, I think I want to:
    - Copy or Export my full library to an attached USB drive
    - Connect that drive to the snappier MacBook Pro
    - Run DA against the library on the Macbook Pro and then (carefully/selectively) delete the duplicates it finds
    - Return the USB drive to the Mac Mini
    - Import and/or Merge the smaller libary with the original library, hopefully ending up with the dupes removed from the original Mac Mini library
To do that I first tried selecting the 'Photos' view in the Library, Select All, and then 'Export Smart Album as New Library' but it seems to have stopped before completing. There's a file in the target folder called "Aperture Photos Export_exporting" that's only 40GB.
    So, my questions:
    - Does the above process make sense?
    - If I simply copy the entire Aperture Library to the USB drive (vs Export) will I be able to Merge when I bring it back, or will Merge only work with a library that was Exported?
    Thanks for any tips.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

Léonie, perhaps there is an issue with your system?
Hopefully not, I am seeing the same on three different Macs with Aperture 3.5.1.  Andy.
My network is too slow right now to download your movie, sorry - I could not yet view your video.
But I experimented a bit further and found that occasionally the deleted files will be removed from the original library, but not reliably. It seems to depend on the edits done and the way the deleted images are trashed.
When I do not empty the trash in the exported library, sometimes Aperture will remove the deleted photos when merging, but I could never get it to remove the deleted photos, if I emptied the trash in the imported/exported library.
    Here is an example:
    1. A test project to be exported as library
    2. The exported library after deleting images and emptying the trash
    3. Reimporting and merging
    4. Selecting to solve conflicts by keeping the imported library
    5. After merging, still all seven image versions.
The only way that merging sometimes did remove the deleted image versions was, when I did not empty Aperture's trash in the imported library, and when I edited a few images before reimporting.
KIrby, I see your traces in this thread. Do you have time to try to checkout what happens in your Aperture version? That would be great.

  • Do image files adjusted in Lightroom transfer to another computer if you need to reload the files?

I'm used to making adjustments in Camera RAW and copying the image files for use on multiple workstations.  In this case, my adjustments go with the image file.  If I make my adjustments using Lightroom and move the image files to another computer will I lose those adjustments?  I wonder if I invest all my adjustment time using Lightroom and my computer crashes will I lose those adjustments even though I am backing up my files to an external drive.

You wrote: " If I make my adjustments using Lightroom and move the image files to another computer will I lose those adjustments?"
Yes, you will loose them unless you save to xmp. You save to xmp by either pressing Ctrl / Cmd + letter "S"  or
    a) in the Library Module you go >Metadata >Save Metadata to File, or
    b) in the Develop Module you go >Photo >Save metadata to file.
Without <Saving metadata to file> Lr writes the edits into the catalog only. And, if you transfer images without the catalog to another computer your edits will be lost on the second computer.
By <Saving metadata to file> a xmp sidecar file will be created that stores the edits. In case of a DNG the edits are not written into Xmp but into the file header - same effect.
Note though that not everything can be stored in xmp-files. For instance collections, stacking are stored in the catalog only.
This is presumably so because the save to xmp was created in order that Lr adjustment can be viewed in other Adobe products (for instance in Bridge). Naturally, only those "features" need to be written into xmp that the other program can display.

  • I cloud question to sign up then able to download music files onto a second computer

I have music on my Iphone but want to load it onto my playbook, I am not at my home computer, but have made the computer I am now at my second computer, and opened I tunes on this computer. I was  hoping my files would come over they have not. If I sign up for icloud on the second computer will this bring my music files to i cloud where upon I can then load them onto my 2nd computer. Then I could download them onto listening devices.
its only 250 music files the majority were loaded onto my iphone originally from my own cds

Installing iTunes and signing into your account has never caused media to magically appear.
Copy the files from the old computer or the backup of the old computer to the new computer.

  • Opening an iWeb working file on a second computer

I am trying to figure out how to open the working file of a site I created on one computer, on a different computer to make changes. I copied all the files over, but when i launch iWeb on the second computer to make changes, all I get is options to start a new site, but I can't figure out how to open the existing site I already created. Any answers? Thanks

If you are using .Mac, which you obviously are, then you DO NOT NEED to publish to a folder. This option is only relevant if you are uploading the files directly to your domain hosting company and need to use these and upload via an ftp program.
When you publish to a folder all the files are turned into html files and are live - unfortunately, you cannot update these with iWeb as iWeb cannot import.
The only way that you can alter your site is through the domain.sites file in the iWeb folder.
If you have created a site in iWeb and published this to .Mac, then you do have a domain.sites file that has to be somewhere and as I have told you before iWeb stores is files under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb and then the domain.sites file.
If you have created and published the site, then it must be somewhere on your computer. You need to be logged in under your Username first and it will be Library under User rather than the system Library that you want. It will also be the Application Support under your User that iWeb is stored in and not the system Application Support.
You are looking in the wrong place.
If you want to use the files on another computer then you need to copy the domain.sites file to be able to alter iWeb. Using the publish to a folder option will not work as iWeb cannot import anything as it is not an html editor.

I have lost the purchased downloaded files to install Photoshop Elements 10 and need to obtain them again so I can reinstall the program and continue my use of it. How can I do this?

You should be able to re-download the PSE10 downloadable-installer from your Adobe account, if you log in to that—I’ve only ever purchased DVDs so cannot give you click-by-click instructions.  Here is what an Adobe-chat rep just told me:
“If you purchase the download version product you may re download the product from you Adobe account. If you purchase the DVD version and somehow you lost your DVD we can provide trial download link depends on the situation. we are able to provide you the download link if the download link is available on Adobe server.”
If you have an issue figuring out what to do, then you can start up your own chat session by clicking the Chat Now button on the bottom of this page:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/download-install-trials.html
They will probably want to know things about your purchase including your serial number so be ready with that if you do start a chat session.
