There may be an app somewhere out there to do that, but in my book, that's just something else to complicate things. I have my downloads set to the desktop. I install the app and immediately delete the download (or, if I want to save it, move it to where I want it saved). Takes a few seconds and no housecleaning to worry about later. ymmv

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
You need at least 12 GBs of free space to install Mavericks plus another 6 GBs for the download.
Select your HDD icon. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the upper most panel you will see the information displayed: Capacity, Available, and Used. You want to know what's Available.

How to delete hidden files that I uploaded to Download folder

I read posts on delete but am concerned I'll mess something up - I have never used Terminal and am hoping there's an easier way.
I recently switched from Windows to Mac for my development computer.
I wanted to edit an .htaccess file for a web site I downloaded it to the downloads folder and of course, because it has a dot as the first character it turns out I can delete it. I was able to edit the htaccess file with Fetch, saved it to a web dev folder and upload it. But I still have an .htaccess file in my Download folder that I would like to remove.
What is the easiest way to do this?

The easiest way is to tell Finder to show hidden files. Open Terminal and copy this to Terminal window:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE && killall Finder
Then, go to Downloads folder and delete the file. Finally, return to Terminal and copy the same text but replacing TRUE for FALSE.
Alternatively, if you know the name of the file, you can move to Downloads folder in Terminal with the cd command and use the rm command to delete the file, but it's dangerous. Don't do it unless you are sure what you are doing, and make a backup

Before to attach your ipod.... try to find the file where you put your music.... click on that song.... itunes will ask you if you want to locate it.... from there you have to find the song(s) that is one of the folders in your PC.

Yes I did mean the Caches sorry I wasn't paying attention to what I was typing and made a pretty major typo. Yes i was trying to dingoes a problem with my videos that I embed in iWeb showing fine in iWeb but now been able to load in Safari. I thought I had this problem fixed but it turned out that I didn't have.
I thought that if i deleted the Caches then the computer would just rebuild them and that might solve the problem, its pretty much a last resort though as I have already looked at the settings and everything and been on the phone to apple tech support and all the settings are correct they are just not showing. The theory was that maybe a half loaded video had some how managed to prevent a the videos from displaying properly and so I thought that rebuilding the caches would solve this problem.

I do not recommend reformatting your harddrive and reloading your software. This is a Windows thing. On an older mac it may be difficult to find all your software again.
Best to have greater than 2gig of free space. Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.

Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
Go after large files that you have created & know what they are. Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

I am having the same issue....Same address for years - same as USPS - I tried 5 times (3 macs and 2 iPhones) and now i have 5 CHARGES for 1.00 each on my credit card. Thank you, but it didn't work. My printer stays on away, independently of the PC. I can print from Chrome and IE7 with no problem but not Firefox. The .tif extension refers to a tagged image something. I went looking around in the control panel and I found that Microsoft Office has it's own Access Snapshot Viewer. My company installed Office 2003 on my PC but I only use Word in my work. This snapshot viewer was listed in the control panel under Printers and Faxes. It was not the default anything but for some reason, Firefox 4 installation must have kicked it into gear. I've had the Office software for several months with not one problem. I have Firefox4 for less than a week and everything becomes difficult. I deleted the Office snapshot viewer (hope I don't get fired for it) so my little HP printer is the only one listed and now things seem to be working okay. I have FF 3.6 back up and running. I didn't lose any data and I hope the support and security updates stay available for a long time because it seems like there are plenty of people who aren't in love with FF4. I believe you are only trying to install the fresh version of Creative Cloud Desktop application ? If yes, please navigate to the following location and perform the steps as mentioned .
For Windows
1) Navigate to : C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE
2) Rename this folder to OOBE_old and try the installation of the Creative Cloud Desktop Application.
For Mac
1) Navigate to : /library/application support/Adobe/OOBE
2)Rename this folder to OOBE_old and try the installation of the Creative Cloud Desktop Application.

hello, it sounds like the library is damaged.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I'm not sure about older versions, but in Pages 3.x (OS X 10.9.x) select File > Revert To > Browse All Versions. Hopefully there will be an earlier version that you can "revert to".
