Alas, I think you will find that iPhone 3 hardware is incompatible with any IOS software graeter than about 4.2 or 4.3.
It still makes a great phone but nearly have apps have migrated to IOS 5 or 6.

update : so after reading numerous posts, I tried unchecking entire playlist and just tried one of my playlists. That sync seemed to work, so I rechecked entire playlist and did the sync. It worked. Then I went in to my "walk to work" playlist and added some songs to see if it would sync now, and it did!!! so happy now. will see what happens tomorrow.

No, it's not in the store. If you have iOS 5+ on the iPad then you should have a Settings > General > Software Update option on the iPad so you can update directly on it. If you have iOS 4 then you can only update via your computer's iTunes

There is no longer iOS 7 available and no longer anyway to obtain or download it.
The current iOS version is iOS 8.0.2.
I would NOT advise updating your iPad at this time.
iOS 8, IMO, is still plenty buggy and NOT ready for older iPad 2 and 3 devices, as yet.
DO NOT UPDATE!
I would suggest waiting it out until, at least iOS 8.1 is, eventually, released.

What phone are you talking about? The only phone that can get any where close to that is the iPhone 3GS. The only iOS you can restore on that device is iOS 6.1.3. No way to downgrade any other device, Apple does not support downgrading.

If you have not yet upgraded to 5.1.1, don't. There is code in the upgrade which causes charging issues. Chargers and USB cables which worked perfectly prior to applying the update stop being able to charge the device. This problem appears to be widespread, just google "Charging is not supported with this accessory" and you will get 350,000 hits.
For my own experience, my daughter has an iPod Touch, and my wife has an iPad (original). Both were upgraded to 5.1.1, and now neither will charge. I have 2 different chargers, and 4 USB cables. Plugging either device into my laptop (Win7), my desktop (Win7), or the wall via the chargers all come up with the same error. All cables and chargers worked before the iOS upgrade. My niece has a Belkin charger, am going to try that next.
Do yourself a favour, stay away from 5.1.1.

You appear to have an iPhone 3G and not an iPhone 3GS; those can't be updated past iOS 4.2.1. Unless you're a developer, you can only update an iOS device to the latest released iOS version compatible with it.

Yes you can. Do the following:
- Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
- Transfer othr music using a third-party program like those discussed here:
Copy music
- Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking one the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
- Restore the iPOd from the backup
- Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not contain media like app, msuic, synced viceos and photos.
- Items purchases with your old iTunes/Apple ID aer permentently loct to that account. You will have to sign in t that account for apps updates and for some other things. I would not create a new account
- You can us multiple accounts on one computer and multiple devoces on one computer.. See:
