Using Oracle "Import PDF" Extension in Open Office Draw to Edit pdf Files

I am a fairly new Mac user with OS X 10.6. For several months, I have been trying to find something which would edit pdf files better than Preview does (for example, the content of a text box in Preview can only be "center aligned"). Skim and FormulatePro were two options I tried that were improvements over Preview in many respects, but wouldn't let me paste an image onto my pdf (such as, for example, if I wanted to put my digital signature on a document).
Then, I "discovered" the Oracle PDF Import Extension which I had installed in Open Office months ago, but hadn't really used. By "discovered," I mean I read on somebody's blog that you could use Open Office Draw to edit pdf files and I thought, "Hey, I wonder if that would work with my setup." (Boy, do I feel stupid.)
I have just started using this functionality, but in just an hour or so of playing around, I have found that it has far exceeded my expectations and, even, my immediate needs. Besides giving you (a) all the control over text and text boxes that you would expect from, say, a word processing program and (b) allowing you to paste images onto your pdf, Open Office Draw also includes layers!
The layer function threw me off for a bit, because, at first, I kept finding that my attempts to edit the document resulted in grabbing the raster image and moving it "off" of the underlying text layer (a function, I will admit, that I think will be worth exploiting someday, but wasn't what I was looking for at the moment). Then, I discovered that you can "lock" the layer so as to prevent this annoying occurrence. To create your edits, simply create a new layer (call it "MyEdits" or whatever you want) and you're in business.
Anybody who has done anything more than drawn a couple of lines and boxes on a page has discovered that editing the overlapping objects can be a real pain - if not an outright impossibility. Separating these overlapping objects through the use of different layers solves the problem.
The only downside to the use of Open Office Draw as a pdf editing tool that I can see is that you must import the pdf, save your edits in odg format, and then export it to pdf when you're done. I know that we would all like to have the capability of doing everything I just described directly to the native document, but, hey, for all the functionality I have been searching the internet for weeks to find, I think it's a reasonable trade off.

In the past I have been able to convert PDF files to MicroSoft Word, and Edit and Save the Documents. Now, the converted files are unreadable and uneditable. How do I correct this problem?

I don't have an old PDF file that I converted to MicroSoft Word, however the new file that I am trying to convert and edit is the same kind of file that I've converted and edited before; An Invoice from the same Company. Is there a possibility that a download, MicroSoft Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office System, onto MicroSoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 computer might be causing the problem? Should I download to (.doc) or (.docx)? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried converting one of your old PDF's that have worked in the past to see if it still works?
Are these files scanned to PDF files?
You may want to try utilizing the OCR solution.

Mark up and edit PDF files?

You advertised to me that you could provide a product that enabled one to mark up and edit PDF files. I spent hours trying to download it, install it and run it, hours and hours and hours of bitter frustration. Time and time again I had to agree to this, register that, click on this, scroll down to find that, install something, else, update something else, wait for this to run, wait again for the next thing to run, and then find something else in a something file, close this, open that, stop this, tell us what f===ing browser your'e using (Chrome) start that, verify this, confirm that, choose a f==== password, choose another f===== password because that one is not right, choose yet another f=====g password because it's the wrong shade of pink, choose a f======= userrname, and in the end, nothing worked, Nothing changed, I still cannot edit or mark up any Adobe Acrobat files. Every time you open a file like this it pesters you to download updates and this is just a f====== nightrmare, I have wasted hours when I could have been working and your product did not work or make any difference. I still don't know if you have to pay but if you do I resent you hiding that until the end. I accepted a supposedly free 30-day trial but that is not enough time to get the f====== product to download install and work.

You started this situation by advertising a product and sending a pop-up. All it caused was huge waste of my time and effort.
You are like a girl who stands on a street corner saying "Wanna hooker?" then when someone says "Yes" he is expected to produce his birth certificate, passport, health insurance card, Green card, national insurance card, baptismal certificate, take her out to dinner, take her out to dinner again because that wasnn't good enough, register his name and credit card details, undergo an international credit check , choose five f===== passwiords, undergo a DNA test and marry her grandmother. Well we have no idea what you tried to do to install the trial version. There may have been a fundamental error in your process, but unless you let us know what was happening, we can't help. As for Adobe, we don't try to defend them, but try to provide help where we can.
Sorry you ran into frustration. The package does a lot of things, but for you the trial would have been ideal to see what worked like you expected and what did not. A lot of people expect all sorts of things out of Acrobat that are not possible, thinking it is like a word processor. It is not like that, but a PDF is more like an electronic version of a piece of paper. Modifications are typically a pain, just as it is with paper.
Over the years a lot of features have been added. The markup is OK, but some of the functions continue to be clunky. The forms is a major contribution to a standard PDF. The OCR feature is useful for scanned files. So there are many features. Reader is basically that, a Reader. It generally allows the completion of forms and possibly submission electronically (depends on the creation process).
If you want to try again (assuming the trial period has not run out), then let us help. When you do the install, you need to be sure you log in as the administrator (on Windows) and disable anti-virus. There may also be an issue of the compatibility of the trial version and your OS (you never mentioned). So there are possible fixes that might be able to help you play with the trial.

If the files have a permissions password, you need to know it, and remove security, before you can edit the files. That is correct.

Lenvo User Guide doesn't want open the pdf file. Why!?

Lenvo User Guide application doesn't want open the pdf file after selecting my language. I have Adobe Reader installed on my laptop and application is from oryginal Lenovo cd with drivers. Can you try right clicking the User guide file and go to General tab and check if the "open with" settings is set to Adobe Reader.
If still won't work download a new User guide from www.support.lenovo.com

Editable pdf file that can be saved

Working with Acrobat X. I have created an editable PDF file that i sent to my customer. They enter their information and all is good, BUT they can't save the file only print.
Is there something else I need to do to make this possible?

Whenever I see "customer" in a question like this I try to remind folks of the limitation of the license for 500 uses. Not requiring the extra step is an option for Reader XI as mentioned. The other way is to have any data submitted as a data file (FDF) rather than the whole form. When you import the data file into the form you get the same result. The customer can just print the form for their records.

When you insert pages, you can determine whether they go before or after the first or last page, or a page number that you specify.
If you're inserting multiple files at once, they will all be inserted in the same spot that you specify in the Select File to Insert dialog box.
There may be a way to handle this programmatically, and there are some very clever folks who visit these forums regularly. Let's see if they chime in...

Portable Document Format, short pdf, is (in general) an open file format. You can find information about this here.
So if you can open the file at all depends on if it is encrypted or not (see usage restriction). Another point is that the text you are reading in a pdf-reader is not stored in the pdf like in any other ASCII-file. There are formatstrings, imagelinks (and data) and other things included WITHIN your text. Afaik (short for "as far as i know"), there are no "preprogrammed" pdf-reader available in LabVIEW, but maybe someone else knows a little more about that.
So if there isn't one, you can only write a pdf-parser on your own......

What do I need to do to read a Windows editable PDF file on a MAC?

I have an editable pdf file which I can read no problem on various Windows based systems. However, even after updating to the latest Adobe version for MAC (9.4: AdobeRdr940_en_US_i386.pkg) I can't open the file. I have OS 10.4.11 on the MAC Book (albeit it is an older version) and Safari 4.1.3.

The PDF was likely "optimized" when it was saved, and was not made compatible with Reader 9 or lower. You need to contact the author and advise them to re-save it with the proper compatibility for older versions, since you CAN'T use any newer Reader version with 10.4.
