I want to erase from Leopard and restore from Time Machine, help!

I'm about to reinstall Leopard and I want to zero all of my internal hard drives and start fresh. (im trying to get to the bottom of a kernel problem).
Anyways last night I did a Time Machine backup to a new 2TB WD HD. Everything appears to be backed up fine, but I want to make sure I can restore from Time Machine before I go and do this.
Please let me know if there are any precautions I should take into consideration or if there is a good way to go about doing this.
Thanks!

You could try restoring your backup to a new drive before you over-write your working system. That will allow you to test your backup and skills before risking too much down time.
Add a drive large enough to restore the backup to and boot from the Leopard DVD. After you choose your language you can get to the Utility menu to restore Leopard from a TM drive.
Here's a pretty good "walk thru" on the entire process:

  • Installed a new hdd, want to install from time machine

I just had a new hdd put into my 2009 macbook. I was trying to reinstall all my files from time machine but only 60 of the 200gb appeared.  What is my best course of action?
    Thanks

No, there isn't any way to connect them, but it doesn't really make any difference - if you installed from disks, you use Software Update to keep it current. If you use the app store version, you download the latest update.
The thing that probably matters is that your serial number represents your license to use the software.

  • Restoring with Time Machine help!!!

I have searched for many hours for an answer to my problem to no avail. I have seen multiple discussions on here about this issue, but none seem quiet the same.
I use an Intel iMac, 500GB, Snow leopard, and all the most current updates.
While trying to cmd+q Safari from the ESPN fantasy page I received the spinning rainbow ball. I gave it about ten minutes to quit and nothing. I tried to key a force quit and nothing. So I then did a hard reset pressing the power button. Once it restarted the screen froze on the grey startup and seconds later gave me the Folder with a question mark icon flashing. I found the Snow Leopard install disc and put it in to restart. I restarted and held "c" while doing so.
Mac OS X Installer appears and I follow it to a point where I can select >utilities and select disk utility or restart from back up.
I first tried to use my Time Machine backups that are stored on a Lacie 1TB external, but I receive a message that "this disk does have enough space." I tried selecting all the way back a year ago when I started using it to restore. No luck.
Next I tried going to the >utilities >disk utility selection and it only shows the install cd and a hard disk labeled "Media" but in the Total cpacity: it reads 0 Bytes. I don't know where to go from there.
Now I am am deleting the back ups from August 1, 2010 and before to try and free up space and attempt a restore with Time Machine.
Does anyone have any ideas or solutions or anything. I have 120GB of music, CS5, Logic Pro 9, Office, and many other programs all at risk. Yes, I paid for all of them. I just don't have time to spend installing it all again, especially when some of my work depends on them.
    Tragic, huh!
    Thank you
    Chuck

Okay, so I have mentioned this twice, in both post that I have written, the hard drive is not showing in the disk utilities,
Yes, I understand you can't see the +*internal HD.+* I advised you to do a +*repair disk+* on your backups.
Tell me that there is nothing I could have done, that it was on the verge of crashing since it was probably under a lot of stress.
Correct; other than dropping your Mac or having it zapped by a power surge, you didn't break the internal HD.
I have already erased some of the backups from August 1 2010 and before. I still have from this past sunday, 21st until August 2nd. Please elaborate how it will corrupt the backups. I plugged the external into my macbook pro and trashed those backups mentioned before.
The message you were getting was that there wasn't enough space on the internal (since it showed zero), not the backups.
If you did that via the Finder or Terminal, they may be corrupted.
Unfortunately, Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks not to do that.
You shouldn't have to delete things there, since Time Machine will do it automatically when the disk gets full. But if you want or need to, you can do it via Time Machine without harm. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
So, repair them per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If they're ok, or can be repaired, your best bet when you get your Mac back is to do a full system restore, per #14 in the FAQ.

  • HT4399 Address book reinstall from Time Machine help?

I just did a master erase on my MacBook Air 2010.  Genius bar helped me.  The only thing that didn't get reinstalled from Time Machine was my address book. How do I get my contacts back?  Please help!

    Try this:
Open address book and then launch Time Machine (making sure Address Book is still the active window). You should be able to navigate through time IN the address book window and once you find the correct time there will be an option that says "Restore All".

  • Removing specific folder from time machine help!

I had a drive die that had only specific folders backed up. Large files sizes. How do I remove them from time machine now that the drive is gone. I read that you can use the gear menu to remove the back up but it does not seem to work. and since it's not the drive being backed up but only a portion of it, I see no way to remove this data. Any help would be appreciated

You do mean you want to delete all the backups of those folders, right?
If so, use the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see the backups, then select them and use the "gear" menu or right-clicking, to get the menu where you can delete them.  See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details on that.

  • Did a leopard clean install and restored via time machine

    Hi
Just done a leopard clean install and restored data via time machine, now when i run time machine i cant go back in time to restore other bits and bobs, any ideas
    thanks

This is not meant to be a snide comment, but I use Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper not TM. Used TM for a while but got tired of it, changed to CCC and then when Super Duper was updated for Leopard moved back to SD. I like it because (both SD and CCC) can be scheduled for whenever you want to run it and it only backs up files that have changed since last update. It also produces a bootable disk.

  • How do I replace a failed hard drive and restore with time machine

My hard drive died on my 2009 MacBook Pro. I regularly backed up my data using Time Machine. How do I format the drive and restore fom my USB TimeMachine drive.

If you haven't made a Lion or Mt Lion install USB thumb drive or used the Recovery Disk assistant to make a USB thumb of the Recovery HD then you will need to boot the system from the original OS Install disk that came with the system or a Snow Leopard disk you bought to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Then use the option to restore from TM backup.
Or if you have made  New backup since install Lion or Mt Lion then that Tm backup may have a copy of the Recovery HD on it. Only way to tell is connect your TM backup drive and when starting the system hold down the Option key and see if you get a link that says Recovery HD.

  • Reformatting and restoring with Time Machine

I want to reformat my hard drive to de-clutter and improve my computer's performance. I have been using Time Machine for a while to back everything up, so I thought I would just restore with it. But if I do that will I just be reinstalling all of my clutter? Does TM really put a hard drive back EXACTLY as it was before? Any suggestions?

    yes, you will.

    yes, it does.
    Any suggestions?
do an erase and install and manually restore only what you need. pretty tedious but is the only way to achieve what you want. after you reinstall you can access your old TM backups in browse mode. control-click on TM in the Dock and choose "browse other TM disks". this will let you browse your old backups and restore what you want where you want to.

    wrongusername wrote:
But if I transfer everything with the Setup Assistant, won't I once again be experiencing the problems I had?
If the problems were caused by your data. But that's extremely unlikely. It may have been an app, or, much more likely from your description, something corrupted in the Leopard OS. That's one of the problems with upgrading a sick system without knowing what or where the causes are. It's a bit like a brain surgeon operating on himself: if he isn't in tip-top shape to start with, his condition is likely to change, and not for the better.
Most of us would have recommended first simply doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your internal HD; if that didn't help, installing the "combo" Leopard update; if that didn't work, doing an +Archive and Install+ and re-installing the "combo."
After a clean re-install of Snow Leopard, my Mac worked fine again (except for the TM trouble). So it probably had something to do with my old files.
Probably not. Much more likely OSX was somehow damaged. And you got a whole new one.
How come I could read the files on my external HD and yet not be able to copy the files?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, among other things, in an attempt to keep us mere mortals from moving, changing, or deleting things and corrupting them.

  • Hi . i just purchase my new matchbook air and my last macbook air backup was save in time machine. Now i want to backup from time machine but this is not showing in backup machine plzz help me out to backup from uncompleted backup ?

    plz help me out

TimeMachine 'knows' that this is a new computer so you have to open up the TimeMachine control panel and tell it what hard drive to use for backing up. Also the first backup will be a complete backup because it is a different computer.

  • Restored iMac from Time Machine Backup - OS Updates out of whack

    Hi all.
I just had to get a new hard drive, as part of the Apple Seagate Replacement program.
I have installed Snow Leopard on my new drive, rebooted and restored from my Time Machine backup.
Once I rebooted from that, my "About This Mac" stated I was using OS version 10.6.2 and I had to re-install updates to bring me back up to 10.6.8.
How can this be, as I thought a full restore from Time Machine would also restore all updates?  Seems weird to me.
    Thanks,
    B.

    1) Does this screw up my files???  I'm already experiencing issues having to re-install Flash Player, re-importing Mail, etc. Would you think that my system files could be corrupt?
It shouldn't screw up your files. If you are experiencing problems, maybe you should erase the disk and restore your Time Machine backup again, but now restoring the whole backup instead of restoring it after installing Mac OS X. Note that Migration Assistant sometimes doesn't work properly and it can create problems on Mac OS X.
    Belly Buckle wrote:
    2) Is there a way of restoring from my Time Machine backup without actually using my original install disks first?
If so, how would I do this, as the pane which says "Do you already Own A Mac" only comes up after installing the software from the DVD.
As you have problems after restoring the backup, I recommend you to start from the Mac OS X DVD that came with your Mac and restore the backup:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X DVD that came with your computer, and press C key while your Mac is starting.
    2. Go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    3. Close Disk Utility, go to Utilities menu, select the option to restore the Time Machine backup and follow the steps.
This will save you time searching a solution and it's safer than using Migration Assistant. After restoring the backup by this way, your computer will be as it was before replacing the hard drive

  • Erase and install - Can I select what I want to put back on from Time Machine.

I've been suffering from the super slow Yosemite problem. I have had two long sessions with the very nice people on Apple support and have we have made some progress - thank you Marie and Cheryl. They have suggested an 'erase and install' to resolve the problem.
I regularly back up my laptop to 'Time Machine' but I don't want to just reload everything as that may just bring the problem back again. So, the question is can I select which files and applications I want to recover from Time Machine?

    Here's what you should do:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Once you know it's running properly you can begin re-installing your third-party software from the original media. Finally, restore your data from your Time Machine backup. This assures that all but your data files are freshly installed.

  • Is there a free temporary Leopard, so i can restore my Time Machine backup

My MacBook suffered meltdown this week which i could not retrieve without an 'erase and reinstall' of the system. however i bought Leopard as a Family edition and am no longer have the disks. so i've currently only been able to reinstall Tiger.
I have everything backed up on a Time Machine drive and, as i understand it, once i restore i will retrieve all my original settings- including my Leopard license- however i can only restore once i'm back up to Leopard and can use Time Machine!
So, as i understand i'll be accused of a plea for free software, is there a version of Leopard i can download that has a temporary license (ie i wouldnt be able to steal and use forever) that i can use to restore myself back to my original Leopard!
if anyone knows i would be grateful, otherwise i have to wait for the disks to be dug up and returned from the States, which is not conducive to work!!
    Cheers

Note that if you purchased your Family pack directly through the Apple Store online, it does retain a history of your recent (past 18 months) purchases and you may be able to obtain proof of purchase that way.
(To do that, go to the "Account" link at http://store.apple.com)
Many other online retailers are also willing to send you a proof-of-purchase via email.
Alas, if you bought it at a conventional store, you'll likely have to wait to have someone dig up the receipts or whatever documentation your local Apple Store will accept.
You might also try asking the manager of the Apple Store to intervene really nicely.
