I want to erase my mini hard drive. where do I get a new operating software

I want to erase my mini hard drive. Where do I get a new operating software to reinstall on the wiped hard drive?

If you have Lion or later boot to the Recovery partition and reinstall the OS
OS X: About OS X Recovery
Otherwise you have to boot from your install disk and reinstall the OS.

my hp died, and i had to take the hard drive and swap it out to a new computer. Right now it is in an external case hooked up to laptop via USB - no expansion slots. .  the laptop will not recognize it, it only sees the recovery partition. How can i work around tyhios to get the files moved over?

    Hi,
That's true because it still has some sorts of "signature" on it. My suggestion use other computer and reassign its C: to something then try again. I used to swap HDD's nearly every month and noticed this.

  • Bought OSX Lion on Family pack have purchased new hard drive where can I get OSX lion now

Had a family Pack under Aplle where we shared all updates on OS X one computer has installed new hard drive but no copy available now for OSX lion How do we solve this problem?

Not sure what you purchased as a "family pack", but Lion does not have that option available. However, if you purchase it from the app store, then the license authorizes you to download it as often as needed on any computer YOU own and control. Since it is tied to your Apple ID (the ID used to purchase it), no one else can download it. Even if you gave other family members your Apple ID to use, it would be violating the licensing requirements and be considered software piracy.
If you installed a new hard drive on your computer or another computer you own, it should be available. Since this is a new blank hard drive, you may need to reinstall the original system (Snow Leopard?) and then go back to the app store as you need to have SL installed to download Lion. If you made a bootable clone of the old drive, you could simply clone that back.

  • Best way to erase a portable hard drive?

Hi, I just got done installing a new hard drive in to an iMac and used a portable hard drive when I use SuperDuper. Everything transfered without any problems. But now I want to erase the portable hard drive that contained all of the transfered data. What is the best way to erase that data so I can use the portable hard drive so I have a clean drive and can use it to back up with Time Machine?

If it was set up for SuperDuper, it should be Apple-format.
Go into DiskUtility, select the partition of the external in the left column, and you should have an "Erase" option at the top of the main-activity window.  You can decide if you need more than simple "Erase" (you can do a 7-pass erase, but nromally that is used when transferring a disk to a new user/buyer).

I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?

  • If I wanted to connect an external hard drive to my iPad, what can I use? Do I have to use the Mac mini??

If i wanted to connect an external hard drive to my iPad, what can I use? Or would I have to purchase a Mac mini?

Sorry, I DO NOT RECOMMEND the camera connection kit for what you are asking!
I was trying to say that as I have the connection kit (bought for camera use so no loss for me)
I often WISH it could do more.
    So sorry for the confusion.
The camera connection kit only allows you to send photos and video (that are correctly formatted I might add) to the photos app.
Other people have had success with it connecting to keyboards, but that us not so useful.

  • I want to reinstall os X yosemite on my macbook Air but i erased the hard drive and i cant get the local recovery option; only internet recovery; is there any way to go back and get local recovery option?

i want to reinstall os X yosemite on my macbook Air but i erased the hard drive and i cant get the local recovery option; only internet recovery; is there any way to go back and get local recovery option?

    Hi Bockworld1,
I'm afraid you did an error when erasing your hard-drive, this has automatically erased the "local recovery". In order to pass-by this, you must use a former Mac OS X installation DVD (such as Snow Leopard 10.6.3) and then when updated to 10.6.8 you may access the Mac App Store to recover the Yosemite Installer and proceed to a fresh "update" OR creating a Bootable USB Installation drive with DiskMaker in order to alway get a installation copy.
I also suggest you to create a USB Basic Operating System (you must select a local USB device to install Yosemite or whatever OS you want) with only the base operating system to launch your computer in case of Main Operating System issues.
Given the amounts of issues reported by users with 10.10.2, I command you to download 10.10.2 version to get a stable OS working.
Let me know how it is going.
    Good Luck.

  • What All Do I Need If I Want To Upgrade My Macbook Hard Drive?

    hey guys.
i've tried reading up a little but i was hoping someone (or a few people) could give me some straight up answers.
if i want to upgrade my macbook hard drive what all do i need? just the hard drive? or are there other pieces?
also.. whats a good 250GB one? i found this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2-5-Western-Digital-250GB-SATA-Harddrive_W0QQitemZ220271 134397QQihZ012QQcategoryZ158853QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
is that one any good? i just know the name (Western Digital) and have heard good things about them...
    any comments are welcome.
    thanks!
    beau

I got a 320GB sata 2.5" hard drive and installed it myself, its easy. I also got a caddy so I can use my old 120GB drive as a back up. Make sure u have everything backed up! Seagate and western digital drives are most popular. I asked similar q and got this answer"
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
If your backup is bootable, then boot from the external drive and use SuperDuper to clone it back to the newly installed drive.
Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz; MacBook Pro C2D 2.33 Ghz; MacBook Pro 2.16 Ghz Mac OS X (10.5.4) Intel iMac C2D 17 "; MacBook 2.0 Ghz.
    And

  • How can I erase my external hard drive?

So I've been having this problem for a while now. Here's my setup: Macbook OS X 10.5.8 and a WD 10EAVS 1TB External Hard Drive. That's all. I was given this by a fellow student on campus who was graduating. So I want to use this to store my iTunes Library (my Macbook's hard drive ran out of space). Here's what I do:
    - Macbook is turned on and running
    - I plug the external hard drive into a working outlet --> Hard drive turns on
    - I plug the external hard drive into the mac using a USB connection --> Disk Insertion Error message: the disk you insterted was not readable by this computer
    - It is not readable so I open it in Disk Utility (the hard drive is listed/recognized)
    - I attempt to erase and/or partition the hard drive in order to format it in Mac OS Extended OR Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but I get one of these two messages:  "Disk Erase failed with the error: File system formatter failed." OR "Disk Erase failed with the error: The underlying task reported failure on exit."
I attempted to look up what these mean or how to fix the problem but nothing is really working. I was able to format the hardware line to MS-DOS (FAT) and the sub-line as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but I don't even know if that's right or not.
Basically, I need my computer to recognize this hard drive whenever I plug it in and to run smoothly as "extra space" to store my music on.
I haven't had A LOT of experience with external hard drives but enough to get things done. But this problem is a killer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Please don't hesitate to ask for more info in order to figure it out. I'll do my best with the knowledge/information I have
    Thanks so much!

Read carefully to the end, it is not a long text.
Let us resume the required steps, after putting inside a new, virgin disk:
    1. Start up machine and as soon as possible put CD/DVD, press key C to force boot from CD; if the sequence is not fast enough and machine passed over the initial phase, and ? was displayed, force shut down by pressing button key, then start again, with CD/DVD inside
    2. Press key C after start, and wait until the Apple logo in displayed, wait
    3. You will see a list of install language, choose one, and
    4. Go to Apple bar and choose Disk Utility; on the left side, you will see the disk, select it, then, on the cenral-lower part of displayed windows go to Options and choose Apple Partition Map (APM), go back and choose, if not already chosen by default, Mac OS Extended Journaled (HFS+), 1 partition (or more, some prefer more than one), click to partiion/erase disk. Note that you MUST have both conditions achieved: APM and HFS+
    5. Close Disk Utility and revert to installation proper, proceed.
If you do not see the disk on the left side of Disk Utility, then disk is damaged or badly connected.
P.S. The same procedures are applied to any disk, with the note that:
    - for Intel Macs, partition map should be GUID, not APM
    - for external disks or flash drives intended to smoothly work with Windows, format should be FAT 32 and Master Boot Record; NTFS may be done with an additional utility like NTFS-3G or NTFSmounter

  • If I don't want to use my Seagate hard drive anymore for Time Machine...How do I go about this?

I want to use the external hard drive still, but not as my back up disk for Time Machine anymore. How do I make it so that my Macbook doesn't associate this specific external hard drive with TM when I plug it in?

Missing a pretty big step here....  How does one install a new OS on an external drive?  You can't install an OS without first booting into an OS.  I don't have a disk to boot to, but have gotten as far as downloading the install software.  Perhaps the answer you should be providing is that I need to create an install disk somehow?
Is not the current HDD in your MBP a boot drive?  If so and you have Yosemite installed, you can boot into the recovery partition.  From the 4 option menu you can use Disk Utility.  If you have the NEW HDD connected to the MBP it will appear in Disk Utility.  Click on that drive to format in Disk Utility>Erase.  After formatting, go to the 'Reinstall OSX' option and install the OSX onto the external HDD.  When finished swap the drives.

  • Creating Partition in Mac Mini Hard Drive

i Have buy a mac mini a week ago, but before three days ago, some file got corrupted, and it does not start, only the password screen appears, when i entered the password, the screen appears again. and it continues. Now i want to partition the mac mini hard drive. i have only one drive, and i want to create another partition in the hard drive. when i create another partition  through the disk utility , i gives error, and cannot create the partition. i acutally want that first i make partition in the hard drive, and after using the "restore from time machine option" to install the mac osx lion in the system. Please help me in make the partition in the hard drive.

Apple themselves don't specify hard drive RPM because they buy a number of different drives, some apparently 4200 some apparently 5400.
It's no surprise that your retailer wants you to buy a G5 though, and is trying to upsell one based on the minis weaknesses - after all, they get more money from a G5 sale than from a mini. They may also be considering your planned use of Photoshop as a stumbling block to effective use of a mini, but the question really is what you intend to use Photoshop to do. If you're a hobbyist, the system is fine and will work more than adequately - particularly if you max out the RAM. If you're a professional user with pro-level expectations, then a mini likely wouldn't be sufficient, not so much due to the drive speed (powerbook users have run Photoshop verisons for years quite happily on what are predominently 4200rpm drives) but because for pro work, Photoshop needs a lot of hard drive space and a great deal of RAM.
On the basis of what you've posted, I'd say your retailer is more interested in their profit than your need. Chances are, if you run PS on the G4 listed in your profile, you're already running on a drive of similar general performance.

  • Format my mini hard drive

trying to format my mini hard drive, but my disk utility does not have ms dos option - need to be able to transfer files mac to windows. any ideas? the hard drive is Diamond Digital Mobile Storage 4GB MD100, N623, made by www.Mitsubishi Electric.com.au
    cheers

    Hi Joseph,
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I presume you are trying to format an external drive.
Open Disk Utility, select the Mitsubishi drive, select Erase, and where it says Volume Format open the selection and choose MS-DOS File System.
*If you do not see MS-DOS listed in that window then that is because the disk is already formatted as MS-DOS.*
So without formatting if it is already, see if it transfers a Mac OS X readable file like a .jpg image file from your windows machine to the external drive, and then see if the Mac can read that file.

  • I accidentally clicked that i wanted to back up my hard drive.....

& i didnt want to with this specific hard drive and its been backing it up without me realizing it for a few months. How exactly can i completely wipe clean my entire hard drive and get all the memory from it back.. Its taking up like 115 Gb that i need for my school work not for backing up
    please help.

Do you want to erase all your TM backups, or just those of the one particular drive?
To erase them all, use Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Select the drive in the sidebar, then click the Erase tab.
Or, you can *Delete all backups of* a particular file, folder, partition, or drive, via TM. To delete all backups of a drive, open a Finder window, press ShiftCmdC, then +Enter Time Machine.+ Navigate to a backup, then select the folder for the drive in question, and click the "gear" icon, then the +Delete all backups of <item>+ option. You'll get a confirmation prompt, then one for your Admin password, then TM will delete them. This may take a while; if you exit the TM interface, you may see a progress bar for it.
It sounds like you're putting other data on the same drive as your TM backups. If so, are they in the same partition? That's not a good idea; TM works best with it's own, exclusive, partition. You may be able to partition the drive without erasing anything else, per the instructions in item 6 Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.home.search&local e=en_US&q=time%20machine
And, you might be attracting more knowledgeable answers if you were to post this question in the Time Machine Forum (part of the Snow Leopard forums).
