I want to get a newer iMac. Do I have to buy all my software again?

We've had our iMac for several years. It's been struggling since I upgraded the OS in order to install Creative Suite 4. We've had a lot of kernel panics and the thing crashes if we open up any of the CS4 applications. It even seems to struggle when we surf the web or run iTunes. (I've been backing up files to an external hard drive and running the disk utility from the original OS disk.)
It looks like we're in a position to get a newer model, but I wanted to make sure it was possible to get our programs over to the new machine without crossing the Licensing Gods. If we have to buy these programs again, then we can't afford it. BUT, we can't risk having the iMac die for good as it's critical for work.

First, don't use Migration Assistant, use Setup Assistant on the first boot of the new Mac. Works much better and without ensuing Permissions and user account problems.

For the Adobe stuff, there are special procedures to do transfers. Adobe is very picky. You might do a search for those or call Adobe tech support. Not sure how the purchased iTunes music works when you use SetupAssistant, but found this. Maybe you want to look into it further.
If you have any content purchased from the iTunes Store, you will need to re-authorize the new computer for your iTunes Store account. Computer authorization is machine-specific. You should also make sure you DE-authorize your old computer if you no longer plan to use it with iTunes.

No, you don't. If you got it from the Mac App Store, log into it with the same Apple ID and redownload it for free. If you got it from CDs or DVDs, reinstall it from those; having the DVD version of a program does not get you a free download of it from the Mac App Store.

  • HT1849 If i bought an album but now want the deluxe version do I have to buy all the songs again just so I can get the bonus material that says album only.

If I bought an album but now want the deluxe version do i have to buy the whole album again because som of the material says album only.  That would mean buying the same songs over again.

Delete the three tracks from your library, sending them to recycle bin, then download them again from your purchased history. If the problem persists use the "report a problem" links from your account history to contact the iTunes store support staff.

What type of Computer do you have and what is its Operating System.

  • Badly want to get a new Imac

If I go to the Apple store tomorrow and buy a 21.5 iMac what are my chances of gettin it home and having a 100% beautiful system? No dead pixels, no lines either vertically or horizontally, no defects nothing...Alls I do is surf the web, email , you tube, just the basics.. Had some great input from a member " Dennis" today and would just like some more input...Happy Holidays
    all

I alleviated my doubts by buying my iMac and having them unpack and start it up in the store (this was a Mac-only store, but not an Apple store) to make sure there were no issues with the screen, backlight, or anything else... it was perfect and I took it home. And, it was actually easier transporting it (that 27" box is huge!).

  • Getting a new computer - do I have to buy another copy of FCE?

I am about to buy FCE for installation on an iMac G4. However, in about six months I'm going to buy a MacBook Pro. Does the following excerpt from the FCE license agreement cover the switch?
    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This includes the right to transfer your copy of the Apple Software licensed hereunder from an Apple G4 hardware platform to an Apple G5 platform.
I understand the "single computer at a time" part and I will obviously uninstall the original version when I reinstall on the MacBook. Just want to double check with some of you who know for sure before I go through with everything.

    You said:
The effect on Global Warming was becoming horrific
with all those people dutifully deleting and
reinstalling FCE on a daily basis before leaving
home, and then doing the same on their return.
How can the (albeit mighty) Fruit-in-the-Sky know that someone is using FCE on two computers, even at the same time? Joke, right? (I hope so!)

  • If I want to reset my MacBook, would I have to buy all the updates again?

I want to reset my whole MacBook Pro.
    1. If I put my applications to a external hard drive will I be able to use them one I reset them?
    2. Will I have to rebuy anything I bought on iTunes/Mac

    1. If you backup your applications, you will be able to use them again.
    2. No. Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.
A true "reset to factory default" would require that you erase the drive then reinstall the original copy of OS X that came with the computer when it was purchased new.

  • Trouble getting a new imac

i want to get a new imac as my flat panel is dead and wll cost way too much to fix however i was denied for Junpier. I know my friends used Frys credit card but it didnt work for me. anyone have any ideas or any places? best buy doesnt give me enough the credit to get a new imac.

If you go into your iWeb application are the files which are mentioned in the log actually there? You can go "into" an application by right-clicking (left mouse + ctrl) and choosing to "view package contents." Then follow the path mentioned in the console.
If the files (or one of them) isn't there, then I would just reinstall your iLife or get the files from somewhere.
Make sure you backup your iWeb Site files to ensure your site is not lost. You can use iTweak for that. It has a nice little backup feature to automatically complete that for you: http://itweak.guimkie.com

  • How can I rollback from Yosemite to Lion? I need to do this as I purchased a newer iMac and I have the old 17" iMac HD that I want to get the data migrated from. When I start the Migration Assistant it tells me that the OS X version is too old. Help!

I have purchased a newer mid 2011 iMac for my wife to replace her dead 17"iMac from 2006. It was running Snow Leopard. The new iMac has Yosemite and when I go into Migration Assistant it tells me that the OS X is too old, implying that I cannot get the data from it. How can I migrate this data to the new iMac? I have the hard drive removed and in an external enclosure connected to the new iMac.
    Thanks,
    Bill Stratman

Since any OS since Lion does not support Rosetta or PPC applications, you may want to check her apps for compatibility.
Have you tried to follow all the instructions here:
OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device
Also, as a general note: when you got the 2011 iMac did it have the original OS installed as required by the SLA? The seller is to remove any OS version obtained at the app store since the license is not transferable - did he do that? If not, as the OS download is tied to the Apple ID used to obtain it, you will not be able to update apps or reinstall the OS, so may I suggest you do this step now before you start porting over all the files. Use Internet Recovery: Hold Command + Option + R while restarting/rebooting until you see a spinning globe and a progress bar. After 2 - 10 minutes, you'll be connected to Apple's servers and see a Utilities window. Go to Disk Utility and choose erase your drive; once finished, go back to the window and choose to reinstall OS X. This should install a fresh original OS version which you can then update and tie to your wife's Apple ID.

  • I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?.

I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

  • Getting a new iMac - overwhelmed w info here but need help

    Hi,
I'm getting a new iMac next week and need help with Blackberry Bold 9000 issues and syncing with iCal, etc on the machine.  I have been told that I can buy an app for about $30 that will sync the BB with the mac programs but reading here, I am confused - are some of the posts here and the KB notes related to syncing directly with the mac software or are they only for making a separate BB desktop for the mac?
I have looked at several of the KB notes but I haven't found the answer yet.
    thanks.

    What’s the difference between:
    8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x2GB http://Add $200.00...
    (from 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB)
    and
    8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB http://Add $600.00
4GB DIMMs are at present significantly more expensive than 2GB DIMMs. It's your choice whether to pay the extra money and have empty slots available for additional future memory expansion (without removing any existing memory).
I presume 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel i7 is bigger, or more powerful than the 3.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo of the 21.5” iMac model. Correct?
Generally yes. You can see benchmarks on places like Barefeats if you want to see comparison numbers.
it appears the CD/DVD problem thing is not evident in the 27” model as it at least was in the 21.5” model. Right?
I can't add anything to what I said on the subject previously.
cracked screens upon opening the box of the new computer, were much more of a problem for the bigger, 27” models that the 21.5” models. Hopefully, Apple has taken care of that by packaging them more carefully.
I haven't seen a report of any cracked screens in several weeks now. But with the gorillas the shipping companies tend to use, there are no guarantees. I once received a pallet-load of computers that the trucking company had driven a forklift blade through. So you never know how your computer might arrive. The prevalence of problems seems to have been alleviated, though.
    Regards.

  • Looking to get a new imac

I currently have an iMac 20 inch which I have had for almost a year now. My dads computer isnt functioning the way he needs it to so we are thinking about giving mine to him and me getting a new iMac. The question I have is this...I do video work in final cut studio so I do video rendering, and Im looking into getting the 24 inch 2.88 Ghz model. Would that computer be ok for what Im doing or should I get the 3.06 Ghz model for the better performance? I don't do a ton of video work but when I do its pretty heavy rendering. Im just not sure if I should get the 2.88 Ghz or 3.06 Ghz model. Any advice is helpful. Thanks!

My opinion would be to go with the 3.06GHz model. I just got mine last week and I run all Adobe apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) along with always having my Mail, iTunes and Safari open.
I made sure to max out the RAM at 4GB and it has been a superb machine for me to this point. You may not notice a large difference in the processor speeds, however every little bit counts and you get the GeForce 8800GS card with 512MB which for your use is a much better card than the ATI in the 2.8 model.
For me, it was also a factor of wanting the best model out there so it takes just that much longer to become obsolete.
If the few extra hundred dollars are not an issue, I highly recommend the 3.06GHz model. I will also add the 24" is awesome in terms of real estate. Makes my 23" ACD at work look tiny! Good luck with your decision. Let us know if you have any other questions.

  • When to get a new iMac

I've been waiting for a number of months to get a new iMac. Optimally, I wanted to save the most money by waiting for the latest model, plus getting iLife '08 and Mac OS 10.5 Leopard.
However, I'm caught in a small bind. Since I do development work, I try to have a variety of test systems, dating as far back as Mac OS 10.1. I have Mac OS 10.4 on a PowerPC Mac, but not an Intel Mac yet. Unfortunately, the retail copies of Mac OS 10.4 are only available for PowerPC Macs, and not for Intel-based Macs, since all of the Intel-based Macs have come out during the Tiger timeframe.
Would it be a good idea to get a new iMac (preloaded with Tiger) right now and then get Leopard when it comes out (and create a dual-boot), or is there so little difference between the PPC and Intel versions of Tiger that I shouldn't worry too much?
At this point, I haven't noticed any real problems occurring from the Intel/UB versions of my applications, but I don't want to be caught by unexpected surprises and not having a proper test platform.

I don't think that there is that much difference. I originally did some dev work on a G5 PPC and the app ran without problems on both G4 PPC and Intel Macs.
I would go for a iMac now and then buy the retail version of Leopard. You might also want to look at the "Sandbox" feature of SuperDuper! http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

  • I am planning on getting a new IMAC will my old software work on the new mac

I am planning on buying a IMAC so will I have to replace all my software that is on my G4 running 10.5.8 ?

Not ALL of your software, but likely some of it. Right click on an application and click "Get Info." Next to "Kind:" if it says Power PC, it will not work on a new iMac.

Well... it's not actually an iTunes or even an Apple question is it? But you can use either Shazam or Soundhound.
If you do a search for both of them, you will find the various options available to you, which include apps for portable devices and in the case of Shazam, a work-round that allows you to use an online option using your computer's microphone on either a PC or Mac.
There may be other services as well, but I know these two.
I do not receive any reward (financial or otherwise) as a result of mentioning either Shazam or Soundhound.
