I want to have my iTunes play lists and play counts on my new MacBook Air transferred over from my old (4 years and dying) MacBook Air.

Copy the entire iTunes folder including the iTunes library file from your old Mac to the same Music folder on your new Mac. Then down the Option key while launching iTunes and select the copied iTunes folder. That should get you all your playlists, playcounts etc.; those are stored in that iTunes library file.

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:

If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

ITunes 11.1 and / or the Podcast app on iOS 7 will not allow me to create play lists in iTunes. Is there an app that will allow me to create podcast plays lists and play them on the iPhone running iOS7 ?

iOS 7 will not alow podcasts lists in the music app so we have to use the podcast app
but iTunes 11.1 and / or the Podcast app on iOS 7 will not show podcast play lists created in iTunes (well maybe it does but clicking on the podcasts app causes iTunes to freeze so can not select)
sometime some folders created in iTunes have appeared with the Podcast app but others not.
creating an on the go list in my iphone is agony - I have over 100 podcasts I have subscribed to and when creating a list you can not view by most recently downloadded podcast
AND you can't search (no search bar) so I have to scroll through to find a podcast that might have been updated - but they are not in any logocal order that I can work out (not alphbetical or date added).

Agree about the disaster part. I haven't found a fix within iTunes.
I gave up and switched to downcast 2 days ago. Even though it was a hassle to re-subscribe to all my podcasts, im so much happier.
To make switching easier, I found that in iTunes you can "get info" on the podcast and copy the RSS address to the clipboard. Put all of these in a message note. When iCloud syncs the note to your phone, you can copy and paste the urls into downcast one at a time to subscribe.
Downcast has crashed on me occassionally when I'm subscribing to feeds, but so far it has recovered gracefully each time and no data was lost.

I would like to set up 2 user accounts on my macbook pro so that my girlfriend and I can both have our own email accounts however, I want to have access to my itunes account and libary from both user profiles is this possible? If so how do I set it up. both our itunes use the same Itunes account as well as our Ipad.

Here are the answers to your questions:
1. Go to System Preferences>Users & Groups>Click on the plus sign on the lower left to add an account
2. Move your iTunes libary to the Shared folder which is located at Hard drive>Users>Shared
3. Point iTunes to the new location with iTunes Preferences>Advanced>Change media location

I want to retain my itunes 'date added' information when transferring to my new macbook pro

I think even before I ask this, that I know what the answer will be, so please don't laugh at me, just sympathise..
I have a lot of music. A lot. So much I need to use the date added to keep it all organised and know where I am. Previously I used a computer from work for everything, but just got a shiny new macbook pro - woo hoo!
First thing I did was transfer my itunes library. I use a HD so pretty easy, simply hold down the option key whilst starting itunes, select the library on my HD and wallop, off we go. After a few minutes of chugging all my music is there and my playlists. Fantastic I thought, but then hold on - date added says today. This can't be right I say to myself, some of these files were added in 2008...
Being slightly paranoid about doing this I created a copy of my old itunes library - better safe than sorry. I open the old back up of itune library (an xml file) and sure enough, all the correct dates are there. I open up the new one and it says everything was imported today. Weird. So I try reimporting -doesn't work, overwriting the new xml file with the old info, saving and opening itunes again - no sir. Nothing works. It appears that whilst I can interact with the xml file, itunes uses another file (itunes document) which checks consistency, and won't allow the xml file info to overwrite, simply rehashes to the dates it thinks are right.
Done a fair bit of research and I think the answer is there is not an answer. Being the wise old owl that apple is, it has decided that users will not want this information if they ever move or buy new computers, so while it will keep your playlists, it won't have this bit of info. My only option has been to create spreadsheets of old list for reference.
I'm hoping out there someone will tell me that apple have realised this is rubbish and have fixed, or will say fret no longer, here is the magic workaround, but I haven't found anyone who can yet. Does anyone have the answer?
Until then, I will continue to perform this awkward workaround and stick pins into the apple voodoo doll.

weird very weird. today i did this again today after already being unsuccessful earlier. exactly the same thing as i have done before, exactly. didn't try to import. didn't say damaged library, copied everything in including date. have tried it about 10 times no luck. today it just worked.
how weird is that?
oh well JG - maybe you mixed a magic potion for me?

to anyone else reading this all i can say is keep trying, you never know. follow the above advice. you may feel exasperated and think you have done it already, but keep trying.

How do I transfer my iTunes library from an external drive to my new macbook air?

I have an 8 year old MacBook Pro that has a small hard drive. So 8 years ago I put all my songs (35GB) on an external drive. I just bought a MacBook Air that has 256 GB of space and would like to transfer all my songs, movies, etc. to it and stop using the old hard drive. Can anyone help me with how to do this? Thanks.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide ~/Music/ as the folder's path, and drag the entire iTunes library, including the database files, to it.
Alternatively, you can drag the entire library to any location on the internal drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and choose it.
If you only put the songs and not the database files on the external drive, drag it to the internal drive and from there to the library in the open iTunes application window.

Hi there, I've just brought a new macbook pro and would like to transfer all my music and photos from my old powerbook g4 onto it. Including all the playlists in itunes and albums in iphoto. I did try the mirgration assistant but that doesn't seem to be able to do it. I've already copied all the applications I wanted by connecting them by firewire but need some advice before I attempt my music and photos.

If you're wanting to do this manually all you need to do is…
1) Copy your iTunes folder, which is in the Music folder in your home directory, to the same place in your MBP. This will include all of your music and playlists.
2) To copy your preferences you need to copy ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist to the corresponding place in your MBP.

"alot" can vary greatly depending on ones perception of the word. However, I would recommend a non-retna model MacBook Pro so you can have the option to install a higher capacity hard drive and more ram if necessary over the years. You can not install more ram in a MacBook Air after purchase and installing a new drive in a MacBook Air while it is under warranty would void said warranty.

Transfering will not work due to the way the software is tied in with the machine when it is installed. You need to install it.

Old Macbook to New Macbook Air Transfer but new Macbook Air has less Storage Space. I only want to keep all iTunes and iPhoto Files. I can keep the rest on an External HD. How should I do this?

Bought a New Macbook Air and wanting to transfer only iTunes and iPhoto stuff to the new Macbook Air. How should I do this? Ive got and External HD acting as Time Machine but the Data on there is 143G worth and the New Macbook Air is a 128G HD. So i dont need all the extra Documents but want to keep them on the External HD which has been Partitioned.
Question is - How do I transfer the iTunes and iPhoto info into the New Macbook air and keep all its settings ect and also keep the Docs ect in the HD? Time Machine wont work as there is too much info for the New Macbook Air.

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

Does the new Macbook Air not have iLife and iWork Apps?

My old Macbook Air came with iLife and iWorks installed. My new Macbook Air with osX does not. Am I missing something?

It comes with GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto. If you want pages and numbers, must buy in the App store or theiWork DVD.

Neither worked. Please help!

Try delete those songs using iTunes by de-selecting and sync. After that mark those songs and sync again.
