I want to hook my iPod to Bose patio speakers... how to do it?

I want to be able to hook my iPod (even my iPod Shuffles) up to the Bose Free Space 51 Environmental speakers. I am guessing that the iPod can't drive such a device, directly. So how do I do it? Do I need to buy an amplifier? A pre-amplifier? Or what? Hopefully, as cheap as possible. The speakers alone are worth about 100 gallons of gas!

How do you normally run those speakers? If the speakers are not self-powered, you probably need to have a receiver/amplifier that acts as the hub for your CD player, radio, and other audio components, and powers the speakers? The iPod then become one of those audio components.
Here's an example of a less expensive model, [receiver/amplifier on Amazon.com|http://www.amazon.com/Trout-Tail-Llc-AG790A-AG-790A-Receiver/dp/B000 A6PTHI/ref=pdbbs_sr1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1214087322&sr=8-1]. Just search on "receiver amplifier".
You'll have to make sure the receiver/amplifier puts out enough watts to drive the speakers. If you speaker system has multiple inputs for surround-sound and sub-roofer, you should make sure the receiver/amplifier has those outputs. Some even have built-in dock for an iPod.
That's how you would connect the iPod. If it does not have an iPod dock (or for the shuffle), get a mini-stereo jack to RCA (red/white connectors) adapter at Radio Shack. Connect the iPod to one of the audio inputs on receiver/amplifier.

Have you copied your iTunes library over to your new computer?  Either way, you'll need to restore the iPod using the new iTunes library in order to sync it with the new library.

Attach it to your computer, open iTunes, and deselect syncing contacts and calendars. Syncing your iPod again with the mac will delete the unneeded content from the iPod.

  • Hooking your iPod mini to your car stereo

Hi. I was wondering if someone could tell me what is the best product to hook your iPod mini up to your car stereo. I have looked at some but I would like some opinions. I want a good product not something that will break right away. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

b Various Methods to Connect to a Car Stereo System, or Listen to Your iPod in the Vehicle
    b Best:
Direct connection via the dock connector or headphone jack of your iPod, to the mini-jack input (or AUX RCA input jacks) of your car stereo. Not many low/moderate-end cars have this feature yet, but it is becoming more popular. Some aftermarket auto stereo units may have this feature.
There are also some after-market, moderate to fairly expensive direct interfaces, that hook into your existing car stereo to provide a high-quality, direct connection. Most will also power/charge the iPod. Pretty slick, but can be pricey ($80-$300). If money is no object, a clean way to go. Not very portable from car to car – if at all.

    b Better:
Connect your iPod to a cassette adaptor and play your tunes through your car's cassette player. Some new cars no longer come with a cassette player, so it may not be an option. It will provide even better audio quality if you can run the audio feed out of the dock connector (see the SendStation link below). Can be portable between cars that have a cassette player and also be used in your home cassette system.
    b Good:
Attach an FM transmitter to your iPod and play the tunes through an unused FM station. Convenient, but wireless FM transmitter signals are susceptible to static and outside interference, and can vary in strength and quality depending on your location. Some noticeable degradation and distortion, depending on the quality of the transmitter, the sensitivity of your ears and the airwave congestion in your area. Highly portable between cars, and may be used in a home system. FM transmitters that need to be plugged into a DC auto jack may not work in a home environment (without some sort of adaptor).
    b Marginal:
Attach an external speaker system to the iPod and play it in the car. Workable, but not too good - unless you spring for a $300+ Bose (or similar) system. But why? Only if your vehicle has no Stereo system, perhaps.
    b Brave Techno-Geek:
This site gives some direction on adapting your own car stereo by yourself: http://www.whatsmyip.org/ipodrx8/ . Risky, but it has been successful: Seanski, "silent track" #2, 11:59pm Jul 15, 2005 CDT
Whichever you choose, power the iPod through your car’s DC power -- either from a power adapter, or as part of the combined audio adaptor. Have a method to secure the iPod to the dash/console/etc. See the reviews for all the various accessories at the iLounge
You will also get better audio output if the dock connection plug is used, rather than the headphone jack. See this URL for a novel adaptor: https://www.sendstation.com/us/products/pd_lousb.html. Others types are also available via this site.
I have read positive and negative reviews of each method, and within method there are great variations in performance of different manufacture's systems – and peoples’ opinions of their performance. Some cassette adaptors/FM transmitters work poorly, some better.
FWIW: I have the iTrip Mini & the Newer Technology RoadTrip!+ FM transmitters, a Belkin cassette adaptor (used both with & w/out the PocketDock) and two vehicles with the BlitzSafe direct interface. Using the same song in the same car, I found that the FM transmitters worked, but not as good as the cassette adapter via the headphone jack. Using the PocketDock on the cassette adapter resulted in a significant audio quality improvement. As expected, the Blitzsafe direct connect was exceptionally better than everything else: less tinny, a more warmer/richer sound, and close to true CD quality.

  • Want to use my ipod for Mac @ home and PC @ work....

I have a Mac at home and have my ipod set up for the Mac I guess. So I brought the ipod to work today to hook it up to itunes here on my PC, but itunes says only Windows formatted ipods can be used and that I have to do a restore on my ipod to use it.
I thought you could use the ipod on multiple computers? I thought it didn't matter if it was set for Mac or PC because you could still use it on both.
Any help? I want to connect my ipod at work so I can get the music on this computer. Thanks!!

Windows computers cannot read the file format the iPods are in when they are formatted for Mac use. However, Macs can read the Fat32 file format that the iPods go in when they are formatted for Windows.
To use the iPod with both computers, you'll have to first restore the iPod on your Windows computer (putting the iPod into Windows format).
The only downside is if there is an iPod software update, you won't be able to install that to the iPod from the Mac, just from Windows computers.

  • I'm new to macs and I'm trying to connect my ipad to my mac to download music onto my ipad. i figured it was the same percedure as hooking a ipod to a pc. thanks for the help.

im new to macs and im  having problems connecting my ipad2 to my mac pro. i figured that it was the same percedure as hooking a ipod to a pc.... thank for te help!

Open iTunes with your iPad connected.  It should be listed in the Devices section of iTunes sidebar.  Select it.  You should now see a window with several tabs across the top.  You configure what you want synced under each tab, then sync.
You can download a PDF or iBook version of the user guide here.  It contains detailed instructions on using the iPad, so I recommend you read it.

  • Just want to play an Ipod on my work Mac

If anyone knows, please tell me how I can just play my personal Ipod from my Imac at work. I DON'T WANT TO SYNC IT. I don't want to purchase some other Apple BS!
I just basically want to use my work Imac as an Ipod dock (that is; an expensive & overrated dock).
Can I not do that? The Apple gods don't allow that?
I can hook my ipod up to any device on the planet with speakers and a USB port (car stereos, XBOX 360, PS3, WII, Any television or home stereo), EXCEPT products from the same company that makes said device?
Please show me how much of an Apple noob I am & that I'm nothing but a hater.

Connect your iPod's headset port to your PC's audio in port using any cable with a single 3.5mm mini-jack male connector on each end.

  • I originally hooked my iphone to my cousins itunes/apple account and now want to hook to mine. But it says set up as new phone, if i choose this will everything on my phone be erased?

I originally hooked my iphone to my cousins itunes/apple account (on my computer). I did so because my computer wouldn't register with itunes (some software problem) so I couldn't hook it up. I've now fixed my computer and want to hook my iphone to my itunes/apple account however when I do it asks me to choose a new phone or restore from backup. Well it was never hooked up to this account so I need to choose new phone, if i do will everything on my phone be erased?

    Hello there, pullmyhairout.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great guidance for backing up your iOS device to your computer:
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iCloud or iTunes
    Back up
To back up the content on your iOS device to iTunes on your computer:
Make sure your computer has the latest version of iTunes.
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Choose File > Devices > Back up.
If you're using iTunes 10.7 or earlier, right-click the device and choose Backup Now.
You can also back up by syncing your iOS device with your computer. When you use iTunes to sync, backing up is the first step.
To check that the backup finished successfully, open iTunes Preferences and select the Devices tab. You'll see the name of the device along with the date and time iTunes created the backup.

  • Hooking up iPod to home stereo receiver?

Hi, all. I just bought my first iPod, a classic. I wanted to hook it up to my home stereo receiver, an NAD made back in '88. It has inputs for phono, tape, CD and video.
I went to my local Apple store and told the sales person I wanted to hook up my iPod to my receiver. He sold me a Belkin cable that goes from the headphone jack on the iPod to the RCA inputs on my receiver. Only problem is, I can't figure out how to make it work. So far I have questions:
    1. Which input should it go into--tape, CD or video?
    2. How loud should I set the volume on the iPod?
    3. Do I need to do anything with the "settings" such as the EQ or "clicker"?
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered a dozen times in the past month. I ran some searches here before I posted. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    John

    iBod wrote:

Whichever one makes the most sense for you (and is free to use). I'm assuming all the inputs are identical apart from the labelling to match the input selector on the front of the unit.
Hi, iBod, thanks for your answers.
The only thing I'm still unsure of is the assumption that all the inputs are identical in terms of the voltage or amperage that they can accept. For example, I know that the phono input is designed for a signal that needs preamplification and the tape input is designed for a signal that doesn't. I'm not sure about the CD and video inputs, and what I want to avoid is having the iPod damage the receiver with too much amperage or voltage or whatever.
    Anyone know for sure?

  • All i want is a ******* working ipod!

    Hi,
I’ve posted on here before about various technical issues with ipods and now I basically find myself lumbered with two that don’t work and after all the expense I can’t bear to go down the road of shelling out more extortionate amounts to have cowboys ‘fix’ them.
To cut a long story short I have two ipods – one is a 120GB ipod classic, the other is a 30GB 4th Generation, and I think both have faulty hard drives. I’ve not mistreated them, exposed them to extreme temperatures, spilt liquid on them, they’ve just developed problems respectively that I cannot fix. The classic is stuck on the red cross permanently (for a while it would work again but eventually skip and click etc). The 30GB suffered from the sad face icon but I have since got it back to the menu screen and it seems ok but when I hook up it won’t sync and comes up with error messages.
All I want is one single ipod with maybe 80GB, just one that works, but I cannot afford to buy a new one, and both are well out of warranty. I’ve had the 120GB fixed before (for £80) but it’s since broke again (once it was out of the repair firm’s warranty, typically). I’ve tried contacting repair places online about selling the units or replacing them for one working one but none have replied. I’m willing to do that, to trade the two broken ones for one working one, but I have no idea where I could try. I’ve tried e-bay more than once. Does anybody have any suggestions?

See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • I have my apple tv but I want to hook my iPad to it .how?

I want to know how to hook my iPod to my apple tv

You can play compatible content from the iPad on AppleTV 2 (black) using Airplay but this won't work for AppleTV 1 (silver/grey) (at least for video anyway).
Both devices need to be enabled for Home Sharing in their respective Settings menus with your iTunes store credentials and they both need to be on the same local network (wi-fi for iPad, wi-fi or ethernet for AppleTV 2).
Then use the Airplay icon in compatible apps to send stuff to AppleTV:
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/airplay.html
You cannot connect AppleTV2 and iPad physically with a cable to get them to work together if that's what you meant.

  • When I hook my ipod to computer it reads: there is a problem with this drive scan the drivenow and fit it (F) it doesnt work

when I hook up ipod up to to itunes it reads:  IP F  There is a problem with this drive.  scan the drive now and fix it.   When I do this, nothing happens.

    Hello,
I found the same issue. I have an iPod Classic 160 GB (Black) bought in April 2013. I'm using a Windows 8 Laptop bought in August 2014.
This is my account of this problem and why I think customers should just ignore the pop-up, but Apple (and possibly with Microsoft/Windows) should look at the issue.
Recently (approximately from early February 2015), when I connect the iPod to my computer I get a message saying there is a problem with the drive and it needs to be scanned and fixed. In full the message reads:
There's a problem with this drive. Scan the drive now and fix it.
This message appears very shortly and then immediately (once the message disappears, is clicked on, or x-d) brings up Windows File Explorer on the drive and its containing visible folders: which tells me nothing (though it can clearly open it and look at the files not locked to iTunes)
Other than this, the iPod seems to connect properly and work fine. iTunes (ver: 12.1.0.71 64bit) seems to find no issue. The iPod runs fine, it syncs properly (all of my music and podcasts). It responds as it always has and works for hours.
I did some troubleshooting: first on the wire, trying all ports and using an alternative, then on my laptop (all usb ports with other connectors and device drivers) and some basic testing of the iPod and iTunes. All of these seemed fine to me, no issue whatsoever other than the message every time I connect the iPod. So I just ignored it for a while.
Anyway, eventually I got curious (and had some more free time to look at it) and let Windows 8 do what it wanted (scan and fix the drive). Clearly the iPod works fine, and I have nothing important on it that isn't on my computer, so at worst Windows will break the software and I'd have to reformat the drive through iTunes (and Restore to Factory Settings) which I feel fine doing. I also took note of all of my settings on the iPod (like EQ, and the way I laid out the menus etc...) so I can redo those from defaults.
Prior to doing this, the iPod was version 2.0.5 (the latest version).
When I set the drive to be scanned, windows told me it identified the problem and would fix it. I don't remember the exact wording, as this message was immediately obscured by a pop-up telling me the drive was in use and software using it should be closed. So I closed iTunes which in turn caused the pop-up and message to disappear.
Windows then said it had succeeded and brought up the File Explorer of the drive again (now with some folders missing). When I loaded iTunes back up, it told me there was a problem with the iPod and it would need to be restored. Ejecting the iPod showed that it seemed to believe it had no content on it.
So I restored the iPod through iTunes, downloading the latest iPod update again and started syncing the iPod. After adding a couple songs, I ejected it and played them - they worked fine, the menus had returned to defaults but I quickly changed them to how I liked and overall the iPod is back to how it was. I've now set it to sync the remaining thousands of songs (and couple hundred podcasts). Edit - by the end of this post, this has finished copying Music, Podcasts, and Playlists. It's back to exactly how it was before.
Annoyingly, this has not removed the pop-up message when I connect the iPod, still the same as before - the most irksome thing being the file window opening every time i connect the iPod, though this is still minor (I just have to remember that this will happen and manually close it each time).
So I'm at a loss on the cause, and am going to return to ignore it. I'd greatly appreciate if Apple could look into this. I'm wondering if it is a recent update to iTunes or to Windows, but I don't trust that I won't be able to undo changes if I myself began looking through them (and I lack the time and expertise to do that effectively). I think there might be that Windows is detecting something in the way that Apple formats their iPod drives that it believes is an issue (even when it isn't). My guess is the way of formatting is unchanged (the iPod hadn't received an update recently to suggest and alteration to this) but maybe the things Windows is looking for may have slightly changed and disagrees with Apple's way of keeping the iPod Drive proprietary to iTunes.
TL,DR: Advice to others (and Ljchicago) searching this topic is to ignore the message for now.
    Thanks,
    Dixavd
