I want to kill home sharing

I originally turned on home sharing on my desktop when I rebuilt my laptop so that I could share the music without it having to be in both places.  When I realized that creating a playlist on the laptop copies those songs locally anyway, I decided to turn home sharing off, and just sync my music (using another sync program) with both computers, which is what I used to do before the rebuild anyway.  Unfortunately, I think because home sharing was once turned on, my library on my laptop shows double of EVERY song.  One from the laptop and one from the desktop (file info shows \\livingroom\...).
I have tried closing itunes, on the laptop, turning off open share on the desktop, closing itunes there as well, deleting my library files on the laptop, open itunes again and choosing the option to "find music in my home folder" to build a new library.  But it keeps importing the library from the desktop as well across the network and it's driving me bonkers.
I'm sure I can probably turn the desktop completely off (or disable it's network) so it's not accessible, delete the library again and do the search again while it can't get to the desktop and it will most likely work (I would hope), but I feel like that isn't the appropriate way to fix this.  Is there a way to tell iTunes to no longer look at the my desktop when building the library?
Oh, and both computers are Windows 7 64bit, I am an IT guy by profession so feel free to suggest any kind of .ini file changes, registry edits...
Thank you all for your help.
Brian.

Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Reinstall Snow Leopard.

  • I have Windows 7 main library, iMac with additional library and Apple TV that I want to use home sharing, but windows library doesn't show as a computer on Apple TV.

I have music and movie library on an external drive connected to a Windows 7 machine. I also have home movies and other content on an iMac that I use.  I want to turn on home sharing for both and connect them to Apple TV for display, music and podcast.  They are all on the same wifi home network, but the Windows library doesn't show up on the ATV device.
I turned off all Windows firewall and I tried to configure port forwarding, but that didn't help.
I will say that this did work at some point, so a patch or an update, or some configuration change has caused it to stop workin at some point in the past six months to a year.

  • HT2688 ihave purchased an apple tv box, and now want to activate home sharing on my computer, and as i am not computer sauvy, i  am  having trouble  activating  the home share .

i need help activating the home sharing, i went to i tunes and it talked about the product butnowhere what to do to activate it.

    Hello!
I have come across the same issue and chose your response to reply to since it seems to be the most recent- First, the set up at the house:
    MacBook Pro mid-2010
    AppleTV Gen2
    Belkin router
    Two iPhones- 4s
iPad 3- Retina / WiFi only (set up with a different apple id- wife's iPad)
So- I have the same apple ID set up on the laptop, apple TV and my phone.  Home Sharing is set to the same account on all these devices and the AppleTV does not recognize any of them.  I do not see the Apple TV, nor the laptop, in the remote app on my phone.
I have the network set with a password in WPA/WPA2 mode and no firewall set up on with the router or the laptop...
    Help?
I've read through many comments about ipV6- but that seemed to be based on windows machines, I've read that a mid 2010 MacBook Pro doesn't have the guts to handle homesharing, I have restarted and restored the appleTV as well as logged everything out and back in again...
Not sure where to go from here- thanks for any guidance.

  • TS2972 Everytime I want to use Home sharing with my iPad from my Macbook Pro, it crashes.

I have checked the internet connection, apple ID and firewall, and everything is fine. It's just that iTunes on my iPad crashes every time I want to access the library that's on my Macbook Pro.
    What can I do?

I have a new iPad Air and am using iTunes 11.1.3.8 on Windows 7 and I have this same issue.
Everytime I open iTunes it asks me to authorize my computer.  I do so and it tells me that the system is already authorized.
I have followed the directions linked to no avail.

  • Can I use home sharing between my iPhone and iPad? Or do I need to use a computer?

I want to use home sharing between my iPhone and Ipad. So I can use the remote app. But I can't get it to work

You can use it to share the library on your computer to the iPad, not the other way around.
On the computer, set up homesharing in the advanced menu. On the iPad go to settings > music.

  • HT2688 Home sharing with multiple Apple ID's?

I want to use home sharing, but each of my kids has thier own Apple ID so they have to pay for what they donwload.
Since we are a family, each of us should have full access to each others apps and music - inlcuding all the music I ripped from my extensive CD library.
Can apps and music bought on different Apple ID's be transferred to other computers or iPods via home sharing?
    We currently have:
    2 PC's
    1 iPad 2
    1 iPhone 4
    3 iTouches

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can use your own ID's for the iTunes Store, so that you each have your own account and content, but you need to use the same ID (doesn't matter which) for home sharing on all devices.

  • How do i save the files during home sharing

ok, here goes. i am in now way shape or form a tech boff so i guess all i can do is attempt to expalin my issue..
i have recently gotten a new pc and i am wanting to use the home sharing function to some what transfur my music library from my laptop (where i originally set up my iphone 3gs) to my new pc. so far i have sucessfully set up the home sharing link between the 2 and i am fully able to look at the laptop library from the new pc, however i have no idea how to save the music so i can then re-sync my iphone to the new pc as the laptop is way out of date and struggles with the most basic things.
so, i looked on youtube in an attempt to figure it out and ended up frustrated, there are many mentions of a settings button which should be located at the right hand bottom corner, i dont have that. there is mention of dragging and dropping the files i want from the home sharing into my new pc itunes that doesnt work. i have tried to create a new playlist with the home sharing from the laptop, that doesnt work. so here i am, willing for an answer as to if im doing something wrong or if what im wanting to do isnt possible..
    thank you

    1. Enable Home Sharing on both systems
    2. Open iTunes on both of them
    3. iTunes on the desktop should list your laptop's library by now, if all goes well
    4. Browse your laptops music labrary, select, and click "import" located on the bottom right hand corner.

  • Home Sharing require a shared email address, or can we keep separate accounts?

If my wife and I want to use Home Sharing, do we both need to set up our iTunes with the same email address, or can we each keep our own iTunes accounts for our phones and computer, but share our purchases between the 2 accounts when connected to our wifi network at home?  I'm not really clear on how the whole Home Sharing this works.

It has to be an Apple ID, ideally it should be one of the accounts you use for iTunes since authorisation is required and not doing would use up an authorisation unnecessarily.

  • How do I ask home sharing to not copy duplicate files?

I don't know if there's a good solution for this but here is what's happened to me.
I got my new iMac a couple of months ago and I dragged my entire iTunes folder on to my new machine. This unfortunately gave me two copies of almost everything somehow so I selected show duplicates and I deleted them. This deleted not only the doubles but also all the songs with the same name even if they were in different albums. For example, a song on a full length album and a the same song on an EP were both deleted.
So this is what I want. I want to use home sharing to copy the missing songs from my old computer to my new one without bringing over copies of things that are already on the new computer, like when you being to import duplicates into iPhoto and it asks you if you want to import the duplicates or not?
Is there any way to get iTunes/Homesharing to do this?

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer:  Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes.  With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network.  But the data itself is on your computer.  If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device.  Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"

  • Thinking of using Home Sharing. Not sure if I can or should.

Hi. A few weeks back iTunes started asking me if I wanted to enable Home Sharing. I was curious but since I was unsure I haven't done it yet. Here's my deal, we have 2 Macs in the house and my stepdaughter synchs her iPod on our MacBook and she's fine with that. No one else does. On my PowerMac G4, however, I have profiles enabled and 3 of us synching our iPods on that. I've copied most of my library into my wife's and almost all of mine into my son's. So, if I'm not mistaken, if the size of my library is 10GB, we're using 30GB between us which seems very inefficient. My G4 has an 80GB HDD and I have a seperate, internal 250GB HDD. I'm not sure if this is what Home Sharing does but what I would, ideally, LIKE to do is locate my library on the 250GB drive, which I believe is possible, then enable home sharing so that me, my wife and my son all use the same library. If this is not what home sharing is for or not possible I apologize. I've done some searching and I don't see this particular issue addressed. Thanks.

    Hey guys,
I'm interested in Arch Linux. So I want to throw it on a disc and give it a shot. If I like it, and it's lightweight and fast enough(I'm currently using Lubuntu, and I'm wanting to see if Arch is even lighter/faster), then I'll install it. But I was just reading the Wiki, and under the Pre-Installation part this is mentioned:
Arch Linux is optimized for i686 and x86_64 processors and therefore will not run on any lower or incompatible generations of x86 CPUs (i386, i486 or i586). A Pentium Pro, Pentium II or AMD Athlon (K7) processor or higher is required.
I have a seven year old computer, and I really don't know much about processors. So I'm not sure if I can run Arch. It looks like I have an AMD Athlon XP 2700+ processor. So going by this, am I able to use Arch? I've always download and used the i386 version of distros. And according to the wiki Arch is incompatible with this. So I'm guessing I can't run it, but I thought I would ask just to be sure.
    Thanks for any help.
That processor is newer than the  Athlon K7 series. It is i686, and thus installling a i686 OS like Arch Linux will/should give you a faster computing experience.

  • There is instructions on how to set up home sharing, which I followed, but there's no Home Sharing in existence in the pop-up library menus from either of our computers! Help!

Hi! I have an iMac (mid 2011) and a MacBook Pro (mid 2012). We want to do Home Sharing
but it is not working. I have some movies on his (all of our movies and media are downloaded
with the SAME Apple ID --we share the same one) I want on mine. But after I
Turn on Home Sharing under File in BOTH of ours, nothing happens. What gives?
The things it says in the help aren't in existence. It says there's Home SHaring in the pop
up Library menu, well there is not.
    Anyone know what's going on?

  • Home Sharing iTunes to Apple TV, Songs Buffer Slowly

    Hello,
I need help I'm stuck in a dead end right now. Whenever I try to play music from my iTunes to my Apple TV (I believe it's the newest one in a small black box) through Home Sharing, the songs tend to buffer for a pretty long time. Even when I play an album, getting the next song to play takes a while to buffer. I know for a fact that it's not my wi-fi signal strength, my internet speed, and connecting the Apple TV through an ethernet cable makes no difference at all. I've also went into my router and changed some configerations as well by turning off firewall and adding Home Sharing as a virtual server, so it will bypass any interference. I'm using a Belkin N600 router by the way.
Also, what I found interesting is that, when I configure my router, enabling IPv6 seems to make playing songs from my iTunes to my Apple TV through Home Sharing extremely fluid and seemless. Yet, the downside seems to be whenever I want to play a song from my iPhone through airplay, the song will be come extremely choppy. When I disable IPv6, playing songs from my iPhone become seemless, yet Home Sharing seems to take forever to buffer the song.
Anyone have any ideas, or have similiar problems?

    Update: I found the problem.
All I had to do is go in my router and put these ports and TCP/UDP into the virtual server list on my Belkin router:
-TCP port 123 is used to communicate with a network time server.
-TCP port 3689 is used to communicate with iTunes while using the iTunes Library Sharing feature.
-UDP port 5353 is used by Apple TV for automatically finding computers with iTunes on your network using Bonjour.
I believe that many people experiencing home sharing problems is due to their router. Especially Belkin routers. It seems to cause conflict with many Apple TV users who want to use Home Sharing when restarting the computer and Apple TV doesn't suffice. The way that the router talks to the computer and talks to Apple TV, the router can't seem to bridge the connects together. For me at least, by opening these ports in my router, everything seems to run fluid and no more laggy, glitchy, or dropped songs playing via home sharing.
    Also: turn off IPV6

I was checking out the Home Sharing option on iTunes 9, and I accidentally clicked the option that got rid of it. I recently fixed my internet, and I really want to use Home Sharing, but don't see the option anywhere.

Go to the iTunes -> Advanced menu and select "Turn on Home Sharing".

You guys are not alone here. I have a win vista that does not want to activate home sharing. The problem is that I have two other vistas and one xp that work fine. I contacted support but it was no help, the person who replied couldn't give me any info on error 5510. I'm going to wait to see if the next update will fix this. If anyone know how to get rid of this error and make home sharing work, please be kind and post
