I want to login solaris as root user
hi i want to login solaris as root user and want to modify a file which can only be accessed by root user so i wanna do so...
i can work as root user in terminal window but when i go to open that file in terminal window then it gives access error...
so my main question is that how can i login in solaris as root user.....
if i can login in start....then since i know my password already so what should be the "user name"
Hi,
After login if you want to know your username; use the below command.
*# who am i*
To check the permission for that file please see the below command
*# ls -l <filename>*
if you know the root password use the below command,
*# su - *
+<type root password>+
Before trying to open the file makesure about the file type.
*#file <filename>*
If is is test file you can use vi editor.
*#vi <filename>*
If itis execuateble file then use the command to see the content
*#strings <filename>*
But before changing any file content please take a backup of that file.
*#cp orginalfilename originalfilename.bak*
And be confirm on what would be the affect after changing the file......
Take care.

Somehow my computer lost the ability to login as a root user. I noticed the problem when I tried to install a software update. When it prompted me for administrator username and password it usually has my username stored, it didn't. I typed my username and password but it didn't take. I opened Netinfo Manager to enable root user, but after I authenticate, the enable root user is dimmed.
I tried logging out of user but there is not "other" option to login as root user. I can't create a new user in accounts because it's locked and to unlock it I need the correct administrator username.
I've also tried boot from CD to reset password. When I select my boot drive it gives me no options.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.There is only one root user, so saying "a root user" doesn't make sense. What you mean is an admin user, and it looks like your account has somehow manage to lose its admin privileges.
Follow the instructions in I lost my admin user and you should get them back.
Note that in this User Tip, 'youruser' is a placeholder. You are supposed to substitute the short name of your account wherever it appears. -
How do I log in as root user.
Adobe Acrobat Pro fix requires logging in as root user. Instruction link only refers to OS X Lion and before, which does not work in Yosemite.
Rednik55,,
Important: If you are not familiar with the meaning of "root user," read this entire article to learn important precautionary information before using the root user. You must have an administrator account and password to complete the steps below.
About the root user
The user named "root" is a special user in UNIX-style operating systems that has read and write privileges to all areas of the file system. The root user should only be used for specific administration or monitoring tasks. After completing a task as the root user, you should log out of Mac OS X and log back in using a normal or administrator account. You should disable root access if you do not use it often.
The root user does not appear in Users or Accounts preferences.
Important notes
Only the owner of a computer or its designated administrator(s) should have an administrator account or the root password.
Any user with an administrator account can become the root user or reset the root password.
A root password should be difficult to guess, containing both numbers and letters within the first eight characters.
A root user has the ability to access other users' files.
The root user has the ability to relocate or remove required system files and to introduce new files in locations that are protected from other users.
How to Enable the root user
From the Apple menu choose System Preferences....
From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
Click the lock and authenticate as an administrator account.
Click Login Options....
Click the "Edit..." or "Join..." button at the bottom right.
Click the "Open Directory Utility..." button.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu.
Enter the root password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK.
How to Login as the root user
If you are logged in, choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
If you are logging in from a list of usernames with pictures, click Other.
In the Name field, type: root
In the Password field, type the password you defined in the steps above.
How to disable the root user
From the Apple menu choose System Preferences....
From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
Click on the lock and authenticate with an administrator account.
Click Login Options....
Click the "Edit..." or "Join..." button at the bottom right
Click the "Open Directory Utility..." button.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Disable Root User from the Edit menu.
Please be careful as the Root user. Once you are done make sure you disable it.

Solaris ldap client + first login problem (with home user)
hi, i have autenticate my solaris 10 (6/06) clients with a ldap server (sun 1 ds 5.2) withnout TLS (in the future sure).
I test this communication with ethereal, and i think the communications its ok.
But, when my user loggin for first time, he havent got a home directory, (in linux clients (fedoras) i configure pam and gdm to do this -with a kde desktop-), but here in solaris i dont know how to made this.
i have this problem (in a root session with entry "toto1" in dit)
# su - toto1
su: No directory!
I set (for toto1 entry) in attributte homedirectory in objectclass posixAccount a value "/home/toto1".
How and how have the responsabilities to make home directories?
the solution are like "linux solution", and if this is true, what files i must to touch for java desktop or cde?
Thanks!!!One minute...!! How you made it work?I too have fedora DS Configured and want to configure Solaris Client.The #getent and #-ldaplist is displaying correct but login is now working.I guess PAM issue?how you resolved??

Trying to lock out Solaris 11 non-root users but not working-
Hi,
We are trying to lock out non-root user after 5 unsuccessful login attempts by editing the policy.conf file but it's not working..It's working in the global zone but not in the non-global zones. Is there something else we need to do?
This is Solaris 11 with Solaris 11 NGZs.
kind regardsIt works exactly the same way in the global and non global zone cases. This code is 100% userland so it doesn't mater if it is running
in a global or non global zone.
Note that you do need to configure policy.conf in both the global and non global zone.
Are both configured similarly with respect to nameservices ?
Currently we only support lock_after_retries for the local files nameservice. -
Solaris Weblogic 8.1 Server - starting Weblogic as non-root user
Hello,
Currently we are starting weblogic 8.1 server as the root user, but would like to start as a non-root user.
(our unix team isn't too happy giving us, the dev team the root password!).
Is it possible to start Weblogic 8.1 on Solaris 8 without the root password?...If so, can you point me, where I can find more information in the documentation, please.
thanx,
VishwaIf you have managed to boot the server before in the past you should have a config.xml.booted file in your domain. Try using this to boot, if it works you can diff it with your possibly mashed config.xml to see what went wrong.

my log in window shows btoh my user account and the system administrator (root) acount. how do i not show the system accout on the log in window?
I think you need to disable the root user assuming you have it enabled.
Navigate thus;
/Applications/Utilities/Directory Utility
...and then.....

How to make none root user to connect to TCP Port (web ports)
how to make none root user (any user)
to connect to TCP Port 80 or port 81 or any port less than 1024
cause i have web server i want to run and stop service with none root userand on port 80 and port 81
can you help me and give me stepsI believe Solaris 9 also has RBAC control. If so then all you need to do is present the uid with the PRIV_NET_PRIVADDR privilege. See the privielegs(5) manpage for more information on the subject.
This privilege will allow the userid to bind to ports < 1024. You can give a user this privilege either by using usermod (you will probably need the auth_attr(4) manpage as well) after which you need to login again. Or you can try using ppriv to modify the privileges on the users shell. -
Non root user can delete root files, bug?
We're having an odd permissions based problem on Solaris 10 u5 x86_64, (new install, fully patched as of 2 days ago) It means that non root users can delete root owned files, which is something I've never seen before, and I've been doing this for almost 10 years.
We're installing into an 80Gb container on VMware ESX server 3.0.1. The OS takes 20Gb (2 processors, 4Gb memory, 8Gb swap) most of the remaining 60Gb is being used as both file systems and raw devices under disksuite as soft partitions. It's one of the file systems, /apps (where we plan to install sybase) that is giving us "issues"

It's a new "bare metal" (in as much as there is no metal) install. I created the sybase user from scratch by hand editing passwd, group and shadow, buy copying and pasting the data out of the NIS maps. All I've done besides the install & patch is setup networking manually, and created the metadb's and the soft partitions and the mount points & newfs'ed & mounted three of them . I then changed ownership of /apps to be sybase:sybase, and handed it to the database team for the sybase install. they came back and said "should we be able to do this?" as they habitually run rm rf * knowing they can't delete root owned files, only now they can... This is true even if I just chgrp the directory and give them group write permissions. They can still delete anything owned by root, even if it doesn't have group permissions just like the lost+found directory. No other "real" machine we have, x86 or SPARC does this, but we've never installed u5 before either.
As you can imagine losing the lost+found directory is a bit of a problem, however what's really worrying me is if they can do that, what happens when they run sybase as the sybase user? If it borks can they trash the OS and write/overwrite random files?
It's a VM, so in as much that's not a problem, but the reason it's a VM is somebody wants to send a VM to a client as a demo, and at present it's highly unstable IMO.
Does anyone have any idea where to start? My thoughts are that it may be a VMware issue, (though the hardware and the guest OS is supported) it could be a bug, because I've never seen that weird newfs error before, and then I found this:
http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6622243
Or it could be me, and the fact that I'm hand configuring it, and u5 now requires I do it "properly" with useradd, etc. I'd like to test, but the guy wants it built, and wants it now, so I patched it up, and gave it back to the database team and told them to be careful.
I'd be interested in you opinions regardless.
The full spec of the "machine" is below, sol10 is not it's name for obvious reasons, and I've hashed out the ID & GIUD for similar reasons.

d0 -p c1t0d0s6 -o 1 -b 20971520An easy way to think of it is this -- everything in Unix is a file. Including directories; they are just a file which contains a list of the files in that directory, and pointers to them.
If the 'sybase' user has write permission on the directory, they have permission to edit that "list", and can add or remove files to the list. It doesn't matter who the files on the list belong to, because the files are not what is being modified. Only the list of files is being modified. (Of course, in Unix, if you erase the file's listing from all of the lists it's on, the file itself goes away for housekeeping purposes.)
One thing that would have stopped the 'sybase' user from removing the lost+found directory is if that directory itself had files in it -- without write permission to the lost+found directory, that user could not have removed those files, and since one cannot remove a non-empty directory, that operation would have failed. Since lost+found was empty in this case, it could be removed simply by having permission to write to the /apps directory.
This behavior does change if you set the sticky bit on the directory -- in that case, files may only be removed by the owner of the file or directory, or if the user has write permission to the file. This would have prevented the sybase user from removing the lost+found directory. (Note, this also applies to the 'rename' function call.) This would probably be the best way to handle your situation, since you apparently do want the sybase user to be able to add files to /apps, but do not want them to be able to remove lost+found.

How to create a domain for a non-root user using the JES installer
Some questions have been circulating on what are the steps to create a whole domain configuration using a non-root user. Here is one method that you can try....
- Login as user "testuser", all operations are using the user I want to start the whole domain with
- cd to the testuser home directory and created apptest (mkdir apptest)
-created domain
/opt/SUNWappserver/appserver/bin/asadmin create-domain adminuser admin adminport 4849 --domaindir /testuser/apptest testdomain
Please enter adminpassword>adminadmin
Please enter adminpassword again>adminadmin
Please enter the master password>adminadmin
Please enter the master password again>adminadmin
- created nodeagent
/opt/SUNWappserver/appserver/bin/asadmin create-node-agent user admin port 4849 password adminadmin agentdir /testuser/apptest testnode
Please enter the master password>adminadmin
- Start the domain
/opt/SUNWappserver/appserver/bin/asadmin start-domain domaindir /testuser/apptest user admin testdomain
Please enter password>adminadmin
Please enter the master password>adminadmin
Domain testdomain started.
- Start the nodeagent
/opt/SUNWappserver/appserver/bin/asadmin start-node-agent user admin agentdir /testuser/apptest/ testnode
Please enter password>adminadmin
Please enter the master password>adminadmin
Command start-node-agent executed successfully.
- create instance
/opt/SUNWappserver/appserver/bin/asadmin create-instance nodeagent testnode user admin i1
Please enter password>adminadmin
Command create-instance executed successfully.
- start instance
/opt/SUNWappserver/appserver/bin/asadmin start-instance --user admin i1
Please enter password>adminadmin
Command start-instance executed successfully.And this can be used to the incident priority (same technique can be used for problems):
private int GetIncidentPriority(EnterpriseManagementGroup emg)

//Get the incident settings class
ManagementPackClass mpc = emg.EntityTypes.GetClass(new Guid("613c9f3e-9b94-1fef-4088-16c33bfd0be1"));
//Get the emo for the incident settings
EnterpriseManagementObject emo = emg.EntityObjects.GetObject<EnterpriseManagementObject>(mpc.Id, ObjectQueryOptions.Default);
//Get the priority maxtrix and convert to XML
if (emo[mpc, "PriorityMatrix"].Value != null && emo[mpc, "PriorityMatrix"].Value.ToString() != "")
string sMatrixXML = emo[mpc, "PriorityMatrix"].Value.ToString();
XmlDocument xmlDoc = new XmlDocument();
xmlDoc.LoadXml(sMatrixXML);
//Get the guid strings for impact and urgency (note - xml goes by urgency then impact)
string sUrgencyGuid = "04b28bfb-8898-9af3-009b-979e58837852";
string sImpactGuid = "11756265-f18e-e090-eed2-3aa923a4c872";

if (impactnode.Attributes.Count == 1 && impactnode.Attributes["Id"].Value.ToString().ToLower() == sImpactGuid)
XmlNode prioritynode = impactnode.ChildNodes[0];
return Convert.ToInt32(prioritynode.InnerXml);

Can not add printer as non root user
First I would like to congratulate the archlinux community and founders for such a great distribution and more importantly a well documented distribution. I am amazed by how quickly I have I have been able to get my system up and running exactly how I want it and how quickly the wiki's and documentation provided the answers I needed without me needing to ask for any assistance.
My question is a simply one. Currently Cups will not allow me to add a printer without using the root user and password and ideally I would like to use my normal login. I can sudo fine it is just cups that seems to need root.lifeafter2am wrote:
ANOKNUSA wrote:CUPS, like *nix itself, was designed with administrators setting up networked printers in mind. If you're a member of the lp group, you can print as a regular user. I don't see using a root password just once to add a printer as a serious issue (Torvalds is notorious for thinking that his unswaying opinion should dictate how everything in the *nix world operates; the guy's been distro- and DE-hopping for years, and always makes sure that everyone knows when he dislikes something and why).
I only posted it because it was timely, since the whole blog-o-sphere is talking about it.
Yeah, I wasn't passing any judgement. The guy just seems to overestimate how integral he and his opinion are to fields beyond kernel hacking. I stopped paying attention a long time ago; I actually didn't even know he left Fedora behind until this afternoon. -
Install Directory 5.2P4 as non root user.
I want to install Sun Directory Server 5.2 p4 on solaris 9 as non root user?
Is there a supported way of doing this. I dont want any of the files for directory owned by root.
The reason is that there is a very strict access control method implemented in their environment.
The message i get is
$ ./setup
arning: You are not logged on as root. Unless you are logged on as root,
information required to upgrade or uninstall this product will not be saved in
the system registry. This will adversely affect future upgrades/reinstalls as
well as the ability to perform a successful uninstallation. Manual cleanup
after uninstallation may be required in certain cases.
Press Enter.If you just want as said:
I dont want any of the files for directory owned by root.then its possible with DS5.2 P4 on solaris:
1. become root user and start setup to install the DS5.2P4 software.
2. When the setup application asks for server uid /server group id, give the non-root userid and group.
When the setup is finished ns-slapd process is started automatically. The only problem is that you have to be root user to re-start the ns-slapd daemon from the command shell. But the files are owned by the non-root user always as you required.
However this will not work if you want to restart the DS from the java GUI console. (however there is a workaround to do this).
