mess up like the past with lightroom 3 and 4
Might help to elaborate on this.
I mean, none of us currently participating in this thread knows how to do a 100% "clean install" (by your definition, i.e. removing all files from windows folder (if there are any) etc.), but as you've probably gleaned, none of us has had to either. - I run Lr 3, 4, & 5 at different times for testing plugins - no mess...
One thing: Lr will attempt to convert preferences from previous Lr into a new file for new Lr (kinda like how it does catalogs). If that goes wrong, then you may have "a mess" (kinda like if catalog conversion goes wrong).
PS - Adobe may not produce the info you're looking for, so you may be stuck with user feedback.

  • I'm about to upgrade to Lion on my Mac soon and would like to make a backup of all my bookmarks, passwords and other settings in firefox to be able to make a clean install of the new OS, how do I do that?

Well, Ihave a lot of passwords for different sites that Firefox keep track of so that I don't have to remember them all when I need to log in on these webpages. Also I have a lot of bookmarks. How do I make a backup of all of this data so that I can make a clean install of the new Lion, install Firefox 5 and then use this backup to return Firefox to the same level as before? Also, I want to be able to have a backup file of all this in case of a crash. Is this possible, and if not maybe a function for the future?

  • HT1553 I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.

I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.

Mountain Lion is only available as a download, so there is no DVD to purchase. What you can do is download ML and then stop it from installing as soon as it's on your drive. From there you can make your own bootable ML flash drive.
When your purchase and download Mountain Lion, it will end up in the Applications folder and automatically want to install. Press Command+Q to stop the install and exit. The installer will remain on the hard drive.
    1) Right click on the installer and choose "Show Package Contents".
    2) A folder will open on the desktop. Drill down to Contents > SharedSupport and double click the disk image InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop.
    3) From here you can either burn a DVD, or copy the contents to a flash drive. Personally, I would strongly suggest using an 8 GB flash drive formatted as Mac OS Extended. You will be able to boot to it in about 30 seconds instead of at least 10 minutes off of a DVD, and it will install MUCH faster. Make sure the flash drive is empty, or you've copied anything off it it you need as it will need to be erased.
    4) Don't just drag and drop the contents you see in the open disk image to the flash drive. It won't boot that way as it will be missing some hidden files. Open Disk Utility. You will something similar to this:
    5) To accomplish the above, highlight either the flash drive's single partition (as I did), or the item at the bottom (Mac OS X Install ESD), which is what you will see with the Lion disk image mounted. It doesn't matter which one you pick. You'll then have the option to select the Restore tab towards the upper right. Drag and drop from the left column into the Source and Destination fields as shown above. If you've already erased the flash drive, you can uncheck the box. Click the Restore button.
You've just made your own bootable Mountain Lion USB Flash drive installer. Once you boot to the flash drive, run Disk Utility first to erase the drive you want Mountain Lion on, then continue with the install.
As far as restoring your iPhone and iTunes libraries, I couldn't tell you. So I wouldn't do any of the above until someone else chimes in with a way to do that after a clean install of ML.

What is largest solid state drive I can install in MacBook Pro 8,2?  I want to perform a clean install of Mavricks and dump my old hard drive.

If the bank account permits, I suggest getting a 1 TB SSD anyway.  One cannot have too much storage.
Unless you are having issues with your current installation, a 'clean' install is not necessary.  It would be more efficient to clone your current drive to the new SSD, test it, and then do the swap.  The installation of Mavericks over Snow Leopard can be done either before or after the cloning process.
    Ciao.

  • How to make a clean install of Mavericks over 10.4.11

    Hey everyone,
I would like to make a clean install of Mavericks on mid-2007 MacBook Pro ([email protected], 2GB RAM) which currently runs 10.4.11. I already made bootable USB of Mavericks, which i downloaded with my MacBook Air.
When I insert USB and restart the computer the screen with the option "Install OS Mavericks" comes up but when I click on the icon nothing happens and  computer just proceeds to boot into 10.4.11. If I try to run it from the desktop it says that Mavericks is not supported on this version of OS which doesn't surprise me. I've been searching around forums for a way to go about this problem and the general solution seems to be to buy some newer version of Mac OS and then proceed with the upgrade from there. But from what I can tell the reason why people are mainly recommending this option is because only then you can download Mavericks via AppStore, which I have already done.
So what I'm really asking is whether I can somehow install Mavericks without buying intermediate version of Mac OS first, given that I already have Mavericks downloaded? Would it be possible to just delete the whole hard drive with 10.4.11 on it and then make a clean install of Mavericks?

To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space
I would, STRONGLY, advise that you install more RAM into your MBP.
Also, while the minimum RAM spec for Mavericks is 2 GB. This is a minimum and NOT ideal working amount of RAM to be running OS X Mavericks.
To run Mavericks with some success, you need to install, at least, 4 GBs of or greater.
Your MBP year and model can take a total of 6 GBs of RAM max.
i advise purchasing and installing the full 6 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
This RAM kit can be found here.

    Good Luck!

  • I have made a bootable copy of ML and want to load it on another laptop running SL. What do I need to do in order to avoid losing any files. I do not want to do a clean install.

I have made a bootable copy (8GB thumb drive) of ML and want to load it on another Apple laptop running SL. What do I need to do in order to avoid losing any files. I do not want to do a clean install. I know ML is comptible.

I'm getting an error message when ML is almost completely installed and it stops the install. Is there any way to get back to the snow leopard operating system and scrap the ML install at this point. I had to shut the Mac book off and when I started again it tried to install ML a second time. It is still trying to install but at this point I don't want to screw anything up any further so just want to get back to SL.
    Any suggestions.

  • I wish to unistall Firefox so I can make a clean install to get rid of all the Yahoo tabs, but Mozilla Firefox does not appear in the list of programs in Window

I have tried the suggestions posted in mozilla support for removing Yahoo from the new tab and the default search, but I have not been successful. So, I thought I would uninstall Firefox from my computer and make a clean install. However Mozilla Firefox does not appear as one of my Currently installed programs in Control Panel\ Add or Remove Programs, and C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\uninstall\helper.exe does not open or run. I fear I may have been the victim of some ?Yahoo malware. Any suggestions gratefully received.
I have Firefox 22.0 and my computer runs XP sp3.

Do you have the Default Tab extension?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
Use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

  • I want to do a clean install, but how to use Time Machine to get my data back?

I want to do to clean install of my Snow Leopard OS system...all my data is backed up on my TM. I heard if I restore from Time Machine any system errors created then will have an effect on the clean install? Wouldn't that defeat the whole purpose? So how am I supposed to get around that?
Any help would be appreciated, since it would be my first clean installed ever performed (I'm a bit scared, lol).

    greyskiesblack wrote:
would it be okay to delete the Time Machine back up then and use the external hard drive as a normal back up of all my stuff copied over to it by drag and drop?
Leave the TM drive alone, it's a extra backup as you should have two separate hardware backups of your data at all times. Use another new drive for a copy of the files until your safely up on the fresh install, then erase and reset the TM drive to your new configuration.
It didn't occur to me that TM would keep the system as it was...and I'm just now learning about TM. I'm glad I have decided to ask before I proceeded to install!!
TM copies stuff over in a general manner, trying to keep what you have just like what you had, which unfortuntly if something goes wrong that isn't the best course of action because you don't want the old junk back on the new machine.
So since it's incrediably difficult to cherry pick exactly what you want when restoring from TM, it's better to have the user files on a regular drive (no TM) when doing a fresh install.
It's really not that hard restoring manually, just create the same named user and drag and drop the contents of the User file folders (music, pictures, documents, movies) right into the new folders on the new user.
You do a fresh install in this manner.
1: Backup files manually to a external drive, disconnect all drives.
2: hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, erase the drive and reformat (wipes all contents)
3: quit and install 10.6, reboot and go through setup, create the same named user as before
    4: Software update to 10.6.8
5: install all programs from fresh sources
6: last files cherry picked from backup (do not transfer Users/Library)
In that spefic order for best performance.
It's not excactly as perfect as TM restore, but then you don't get all the problems back.

  • HELP! Want to do a clean install of leopard the right way, but how?

Hello, I am currently running 10.4.10 on a G5 quad with two internal drives, one 500 and one 250.
Currently, my apps and OS are on the 500, and my plan is to do a clean re install of the OS and all applications on the 250 gig drive, and use the 500 for data.
    My question is:
I am assuming that if I wipe my drives clean, I will have to begin my clean install with the original discs that came with the machine (10.4) if I want to have the apps that were originally installed when I bought the machine, correct?
Or, do I wipe the 250 drive and do a clean install of just leopard on the 250 gig drive and reinstall all my apps (CS3 and FCStudio02), and then wipe my 500 gig drive after backing up all my data? Then I won't have the apps that came with the original OS that was installed when I got the machine, correct?
If I do the first method, re installing op system 10.4, do I have to do all of the software updates to get back up to 10.4.10, or can i go from 10.4 directly to 10.5?
I want to do this as painless as possible without shooting myself in the foot. I am really looking forward to the new OS.
Heard also that its not compatible with after effects CS3?
    Thanks for your help!
    zeech

If you have any files on the 250 GB disk you can copy them to the 500 GB disk, use a program like Apple's 'Backup' (available to .Mac users), etc. You can use it to create archive files of the entire 250 GB disk on the 500 GB disk if there is enough room. (At this point you should also make a back up or archive copy of the 500 GB disk in case you need to get Tiger back up and running if thing don't work out just right - but I don't suppose you have a spare 500 GB or bigger drive laying about!)
Then, with the 250 GB clean of any files or folders, you can start the computer with the Leopard install disk. During the installation the app will ask which disk/partition you want to install to. That should be straight forward. With two operating systems (Leopard on the 250 GB, and Tiger on the 500 GB) you can use the migration utility, or simply install new the apps to the 250 GB drive. What ever you decide, make sure you first backup any data/files/folders that you might over write or delete. This will also allow you to 'try' Leopard and see if you have any problems before wiping out the 500 GB drive.
Resetting the Parameter RAM (aka PRAM) is also a good idea before you actually install, when you boot up the install disk. (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86194)
One final note - with two bootable partitions, you can hold down the Alt/Option key on boot up (after hearing the 'chord') which will should bring up a screen to allow you to choose which OS to start up - Leopard on the 250 GB, or Tiger on the 500 GB) - however, this doesn't work on all Macs.
    Good luck!

  • I want to perform a clean install of Mavericks on my MacBook.......

and I would like to restore my entire Home Directory on the fresh install. I have up to date Time Machine backups, what would be the simplest steps to achieve this?
I am reasonably savvy, but don't want to have to reinstall all my apps from scratch.......
    Cheers
    Tom

Thanks very much for that speedy reply! If I do a clean install, I will install my apps from fresh. However, I will restore my iTunes stuff. Will this be available from the Time Machine backup under the new install? It won't attempt to format it under the fresh install? Apologies if that's a stupid question!

  • Upgrade from FC6 to FC7 is it required to make a clean install?

    Hello
I have FC6 , if I buy the upgrade for FC7 do I need to install everything again as first time when I installed the whole suite of Final Cut Studio 2?. Is a clean install necessary or just the upgrade will be faster?
Is it really worth it to upgrade to FC7?. I am kind of skeptical of upgrades due to some previous bad experiences of regular upgrades of Motion 3
I will appreciate any tips you might have.
    Thank you

    I have very Good News.
Sunday morning I get a call from Apple Store, and with info I left
in an email earlier that morning, they had me come in and exchange
    v6 with v7.
I was quite pleased when I showed up,
that I added a full version of Shake for only a couple hundred extra.
    Now the tricky part.
I'm not sure how to do this now.
Everything just received is still in the shopping bag from Apple.
I suspect I have to remove v6, but not sure if uninstall is part of it.
I wonder, with having 4- 1TB drives, could I load Shake on clean drive #3,
and v7, then deal with v6 removal on drive #1?
Or does having the application on drive 3 force multiple drives to
gain access to photos and clips on drive 2.
Maybe it's not a big deal, as drive 1 would have to do the same thing.
I'm still sorta a rookie on the beast.
Maybe I have to do what was said earlier to the other persons post.
Anyone in the Mpls area specialize in MacPro?
    Thanks

  • G5 is slow want to do a clean install

    Hi,
I'm not very technical and reading up on different ways to reinstalling the operating system seems complicated and it seems it can cause problems if not done the right way.
CAn someone explain to me the best way to do start my computer from fresh - in simple terms.
I haven't got tiger yet, but I will upgrade to that next week some time.
I've backed up all my work onto external HDs. I have the original disks for my applications such as photoshop. Would I just re-install these.
Thanks from a girl that's not technical

The easiest way is to update from the Tiger DVD. That may or may not be the "best" but it should work, and great to see you have backed up your files first (if only more would!).
There are changes of course with 10.4.x and your DVD should contain 10.4.6 as that is what has been available now for over a month or longer (not sure when).
Fresh will result in the best performance, take longer, but would be best. I noticed that an 'upgrade in place' worked but later went and did a fresh install (erase the disk drive fully from Tiger DVD).
I keep all of the updaters I need on another disk drive, and even burn to a DVD. I have about 2GB worth of software updates for applications, or applications I bought but don't have CDs etc. Updates to iLive, FireFox, Shockwave, etc.
At work we would do a walk-through. We would practice, end up with at least one or two "live tests" or even run the old and new software in parallel for a week to make sure there weren't any problems. Dress rehersal.
Make sure that you have a bootable backup now. And keep that handy always. Later you can update that to Tiger, but you always want an older, reliable bootable system or clone.
how to start and drive a car - if you have kids, you've probably had to stop them before they 'practice drive' up and down the driveway or something.
Backing up a system tends to be harder than just backing up work. Make sure the version of Photoshop you have works with Tiger - whether you have the latest or not (and latest might be right, or you might want to let others "kick the tires" first and make sure there aren't any problems).
Any 3rd party software or hardware you use, should you need to update, now is the time to check into that. The "Special Reports" section on the right side of Macintouch has two topics of interest they started a year ago when Tiger came out on "Incompatibile" and "3rd Party Updates."

  • How do i make a clean install of widows on my HP Probook 5310m or my HP Laptop.

Hi, how with a HP Probook 5310m can i use a Win 7 64 bit OS from my destop which is broken, i want to do an install with that disk.
But i dont want to lose WIFI or any other specific drivers. I am rreasonably confident that I could install Mint Linux and everything would work fine that i needed. But Windows is not as easy. I am sure I would run into trouble. Or is there another way ?
Should I do something now to prepare for the future, its a refurbished "new" Probook. I am only asking for future reference ?
But my HP Laptop which cost a few thousand, is running so slow and its only a few years old, Win 7 pro 64 bit. Its a quarter, thats being kind of the speed it was and thats after uninstalling a lot of programs. All i really need is MS Office and MYOB ?
Sorry its not with me now but im pretty sure it did not come with a copy of windows either ? I can ask about it in a new post with the correct details so right now i really will focus on the Probook Question thanks
