I want to make shortcuts to my desktop

I want to make shortcuts to my desktop for certain websites that I use all the time. In Explorer, I just right clicked and sent a shortcut.
However, Firefox instructs me to click on the "world" symbol to the left of the website address to make the shortcut. This does not work because I do not not have a "world" symbol next to the web address. I either have a padlock or a binoculars (well it looks like binoculars) symbol and so I am unable to do what Firefox suggests.
This is driving me crazy and is one of the things (as well as the bookmark system) that I don't like about Firefox.
Is there someone who can please tell me how to do it?
Thank you.

Also, if you do this often, there is an add-on for sending a shortcut to Windows without having to drag it manually. I haven't tried it myself:
* Its page on the Add-ons site: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/deskcut/
* A review describing an extra setup step if it's not working (the extension was last updated in 2011): https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/deskcut/reviews/490684/

  • Wanting to make iphone wallpaper my desktop background?

I would like to make my iphone wallpaper my desktop background. Anyone know where I can find properly sized images for use on my desktop? Thanks.

Where did you get the wallpaper that is currently on the iPhone? What image are you exactly using as the wall paper photo?
You can try a google search for Wallpaper used on iPhones.
And this may provide you with full sized images and properly sized images.
If you snapped a photo on the iPhone and are using it as a BG for the iPhone. Then you can simply email this photo to yourself and use as a wallpaper or sync the photo to your PC/Mac

I want to upgrade my 2007 Mac desktop to 10.5 Leopard. I am currently running on 10.4.11. When I put the leopard disk into the drive all it does is make a weird noise and then spits the disk right back out. It doesn't do this with any other discs, only this software. Is it still possible to update this computer?

    Yes. Try Amazon.
Before you do upgrade to Snow Leopard, make sure your Mac meets the requirements.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard - Technical Specifications
Make sure the disc you tried using doesn't have any fingerprints or smudges on it. The optical drive can't read the disk otherwise.
If your Mac won't read the disc, might be a good idea to rule out any problems with the startup disk BEFORE trying to upgrade the system.

  • Desktop to Trash Problem: "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."

Suddenly today I get a dialog box stating "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this," whenever I attempt to drag a file from the desktop into the Trash on the dock.  How can I stop this and return to a normal function of dragging desktop files into the trash?  Thanks in advance.

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • I want to make the keyboards numerical keys shortcuts for buttons.

I want to make the keyboards numerical keys shortcuts for buttons, without a modifier key is this possible ? e.g. press '1' on the keyboard button 1 is pressed on the GUI.

The number keys are not valid hot keys for our controls. The easiest workaround would be to use fhe F keys instead (F1 for button 1, etc.) However, if you are set on the number keys you could implement this with a panel callback. You could have a panel callback that monitors all keypress events and then, depending on the key pressed, calls the code that would be called with a button press of the button for that key.

i am getting a "finder wants to make changes" prompt that requires me to enter my password when MOVING data from a folder to another folder on my MacPro /desktop/. it is BOTH asking for a prompt and COPYING the data instead of MOVING it.
i have my MacBookPro mounted (or whatever) as i moved some files to the MBP recently but does anyone know what the hey is going on with this?
i am trying to put out some annoying fires with the Mac OS and this is not a welcome development.

  • I Want to make a shortcut to a terminal command

I have a python script that I run in terminal but inorder to launch it I have to type:
    ~/Documents/python\ stuff
    and then
    python apps.py
I want to make a shortsut or app so I dont have to do that every time.
    Thanks.

    Do you
    cd ~/Documents/python\ stuff
    or is
    ~/Documents/python\ stuff
a program/script that you run first?
    Can you enter:
    python ~/Documents/python\ stuff/apps.py
Anyway, if you create a ~/.bash_profile shell initialization script, you can create any number of ways to run the python script.
    nano ~/.bash_profile
will allow you to edit the shell initialization script.
    Things you can create
    myCommandName()
        (  cd ~/Documents/python\ stuff
           python apps.py
           # or whatever commands you need to execute.
Save the .bash_profile, and restart you Terminal session so the .bash_profile shell initialization script is run as your shell startup in a new Terminal session.
if "python ~/Documents/python\ stuff/apps.py" works, then you could use
    alias myCommandName "python ~/Documents/python\ stuff/apps.py"
    again restart you Terminal session.

  • How do I stop my MacBook Pro from making shortcuts on my desktop when I'm moving a folder

    So my question is,
How do I stop my MacBook Pro from making shortcuts on the desktop when I'm trying to move the original photo, all I want to do is move a picture from a folder on the desktop without making a shortcut!

    Hi RockHazard,
If you want to change the behavior of the Finder when moving files around you can use keyboard shortcuts.
OS X: Keyboard shortcuts - Apple Support
Way down under Finder shortcuts we find:
    Command key while dragging
Move the dragged item to another volume or location
(the pointer changes while key is held)
    Option key while dragging
    Copy the dragged item
(the pointer changes while key is held)
    Command-Option key combination while dragging
Make an alias of the dragged item
(the pointer changes while key is held)
    Best regards,

  • How do I CREATE A SHORTCUT ON THE DESKTOP?

New to the Apple family. Always have been a PC person. Just got fed up..  Would like to find out how to cut and paste with the mouse and also my main question is not knowing how to set up a shortcut on the Desktop for faster internet access to certain specified sites.... Thank you for any help you may be able to provide. I signed up for one on one training.... I hope it wasn't a waste of money.

    Hi there
This post may be under the wrong section, if you are a new Mac user, then you most likely have an Intel based Mac, not a PPC. And also, you may want to not write IN CAPS as it usually indicates yelling in a forum environment
    1. You cannot Cut & Paste on a Mac, you may Copy & Paste, if you want to Cut & Paste (CMD + X) you can download MoveAddict from the Mac App Store.
    2. EDIT: Sorry, I thought you meant Application shortcut - do what he said \/ \/ \/
    Hope that helps

  • Restore an app shortcut on my desktop

  • Keyboard Shortcuts? Show Desktop?

Is there a possible keyboard shortcut to "show desktop"? I can't seem to find one on the macbook...

you can program 'hot corners' on assign a particular key to do that. here are the steps for each
Hot Corners: You can go into one corner of the screen and the computer will perform the assigned action. 1. go into System Prefs 2. Click 'Exposé and Spaces' 3. Click the scroll menu of the corner you want to activate and scroll down to 'Desktop' 4. Go all the way into that particular corner and the desktop should appear. Go back into the corner to show all your windows again.
Assigning a Key: 1. On the same pane as Hot Corners, click the scroll menu next to "Show Desktop" and click the key you want to assign to show the desktop when pressed. Make sure that this key has no other function, such as volume or brightness.
I know that's a lot of info, but it's worth writing it

  • I moved my itunes media from one external hard drive to another. How do I change the shortcut on my desktop to open to the new external hard drive?

Ok, so i originally installed itunes on an external hard drive (G drive) and not my PC. So my itunes runs completely from my external and that how I like it. Well over time it got full so I bought and moved all my media over to a bigger 2TB external hard drive (D drive). I verified that all the media (music, movies, tv show etc) are all on the new drive and everything points to it. However the itunes shortcut on my desktop still points to the G drive external. If I unplug it and try to open itunes it gives me an error. So I have to keep the G external drive plugged in just to launch itunes and then use my new D external to get the media. How the heck do I change that? I tried moving the itunes.exe file over to the new drive but that didnt work. I want it to run exclusively off the new D external. Please Help Me!!! I am using Win 7 if that helps.

Make absolutely certain that FireFox is designated as your default browser.
Do this: Tools / Options / Advanced / Check Now / correct the setting
OR right click on any shortcut icon / Open With / Choose Default Program / select desired Browser / check Always... box / OK
