I want to move the location of my iTunes Library db file but keep the media in it's existing location. Is this possible?

I want to move the location of my iTunes Library db files to a new location without moving the whole lot, including my Media file [Music, Films etc etc files]... in this case I want to move the Library db files to my iCloud Folder so I have a backup of the Library db File [ good idea huh :-) ]  and I should be able to open iTunes whether the media can be seen at that point or not.  is it possible to just move the Library files and then tell iTunes where they are so it can launch iTunes?
Is this just a case of cut and paste the Library files to the new location, then updating config in iTunes?
This may be a silly question but in my book, no question is silly if it needs to be asked.
Any ideas, advise welcomed.

Thanks Chris but I think I have not explained it well enough.
This...
I am using an iCloud Folder on my local Mac hard drive. iCloud Folder syncs with iCloud and works like a backup. It is a subscription service that Apple offer.
You should be adding them to iCloud, not your local drive.
Yes I understand how it works.
The iCloud folder on the local drive is (and should be) managed by the iCloud drive/OS, not you.
You are simply trying to work around iCloud drive.
I just want to know if I can move the iTunes Library cb files to a new folder/location on my macs local hard drive
... and tell iTunes where to look for the Library so that it can launch / startup
The iTunes library.itl file is part of the iTunes library.
I already back up my actual media files (music etch) by other methods.
You should back up the entire iTunes folder, not just the media.
If you wna to backup the iTune slibrary.itl, just copy it to the iCloud drive on the left side of aFinder window.
You don't need to go (and shouldn't) into the iCloud folder in your user library.
This is what the "guru" will tell you.

I want to move the location of my iTunes library music files. At present they are all on my time machine . I want to move them all to my imac. Can I do that and keep all my playlists and play counts? Thanks in advance
its 1000s of songs . Originally I used the time machine as a networked drive but it can cause the songs to pause so I'm thinking it would be better to have the songs on the internal imac drive
how can I move the songs so I can re-open iTunes and the playlists (with plays in the 100s) find the song in the new place?

Do you mean on your Time Machine backup drive? Or are you actually accessing the backup? In either case you shouldn't be doing that. If you haven't space on your HDD to store the iTunes Library, then at least put it on another external drive.
Since you did not provide any information about what's actually "on my time machine," here's what you would do. The entire iTunes folder should be stored in the /Home/Music/ folder. Within that folder you would have three folders: imm Media, iTunes, and iTunes Playlists.

  • I got a new iPod nano 7th gen., but when I tried downloading a video from my iTunes library a message popped up that said: Some of the videos in your iTunes library cannot be copied to your iPod because they cannot be played on this iPod.

I got a new iPod nano 7th gen, but when i tried downloading a video from my iTunes library a message popped up that said: Soem of the videos in your iTunes library were not copied to yor iPod because they cannot be played on this iPod. What should I do?

I kept having a similar problem - 3 out of the 10 videos I had on iTunes wouldn't sync. They were in the right format and I KNEW they worked on my iPod because I'd RECORDED them on my iPod. I finally figured out what to do! Go to the movies in your iTunes library. Click on one that does not sync. Click on "Advanced" at the top of iTunes and choose "Create iPod or iPhone version". Once that's finished, be sure you delete the old version so you don't keep getting the error (or have 2 copies of the same video) and sync. This should eliminate the problem. At least it did for me!

  • Is there a way to change the actual song file but keep the 'info'?

I have a compilation that took me a really long time to edit (by which I mean put the date for each individual song in because they were all released different years becaues it's a Bob Dylan compilation and I have smart playlists for each decade from the 50's upwards) and I want to change the actual file in itunes but keep the data, is there any way? It'd take ages to do again because it's a 3-cd album. I'm trying to change the file because the one I have is approx 200kbps bit rate and i want to have a different, 320kbps version that i've downloaded. I've tried opening the file in explorer and deleting it so that i can 'locate' the file again to the one i want to replace it with, but it changes the song title, album artist, and tags etc to the new file, whereas i thought it would just retain the information but change the actual file it played.
i've had a really hard time explaining this i'm sorry if it's unclear. i was just wondering if there was any way to avoid the painstaking process of googling each song to find its release date and manually entering it when i already have a perfectly organised album.
i can't find anything anywhere about this, presumably because i've no idea what the key words for the search would be, so i'm sorry if this is common knowledge.
    thanks in advance

VBR vs. CBR isn't a concern as far as the strategy is concerned. As given it is slightly easier if the replacement files have exactly the same files names and folders as the files they are replacing (case doesn't matter) but if that isn't possible we can work around that too.
Not my area but I think CBR gives larger files and less processing overhead for the same quality, which is a somewhat nebulous term. I'm not sure there is any real benefit.
Yes a script is just another kind of a program.
iTunes gives each track in the database a unique ID and knows the path that the file is supposed to live on. If you replace the original file with a different file of higher bitrate that has the same filename then iTunes will use that new file next time it wants to play the track. When it does so it will also read the tag and update itself if any of the information is different.
The original function of the ExportImport script was to help someone else rescue play counts from an old library database. If works by scanning through selected tracks and writing out a text file that contains an ID for each track and the data that wants to be copied back later.
Here is a sample output from the export:
    <#>iTunes Metadata - Exported 19/12/2012 20:03:58
    <ID>E5C69360-306A28AF
    <#>AC-DC\AC-DC Live\1 Thunderstruck
    <Plays>12
    <ID>7C1D487C-3414298C
    <#>AC-DC\AC-DC Live\2 Shoot To Thrill
    <Plays>12
    <ID>0DCF32CE-1079174E
    <#>AC-DC\AC-DC Live\3 Back In Black
    <Plays>15
Each block consists of the iTunes track ID, a comment so we humans can see which track this is, followed by one or more properties. I can write you a custom version of this script but I need to know exactly which properties you need to save and then restore. For example Name, Year, Genre, etc. You need to compare a new and old version of one of your songs and work out which fields need resetting in the new song to make it match the old one.
Having saved a file with the information that would otherwise change, you can then delete the older copies of the file, or better yet move them to a backup location, then copy in the new versions. If the filenames match iTunes will "see" the new files automatically, otherwise my FindTracks script can normally fix the broken links. Once iTunes is connected to all of the new files you drag and drop the saved text file onto the ExportImport script to run the import phase. This applies the saved data to each track in turn.

  • I want to move songs from ipod to itunes library

A while ago, early this year i think, my hard drive died and i had to get a new one and re-install everything. I had most of my music backed up on an external but not everything. I re-installed Itunes, but didn't bother to put the music i had backed up back in the library, because it was already on my ipod anyway. so since then, whenever i want to put more stuff on my ipod, i import it into itunes and "manually manage", like click and drag it to my ipod.
so obviously my ipod has all my music on it, my library is very small and only includes stuff i added since replacing teh hard drive. my external back up has a lot of music but not everything.
Now, problem is, there are some songs on my ipod that are not in the library OR the backup (and i don't have the original cd's). I want them in my library so i can burn a CD for someone. and i can't figure out how to get these songs into itunes. when i go to "sync" it says this will erase the contents of my ipod and replace it with what is in the library(which is practically nothing). this is the opposite of what i would like to happen. so ideally i would like the contents of my ipod to = the contents of my library; or at least, move those few songs that currently exist only on my ipod into the library. i feel like this should be so easy to do, what am i doing wrong? help me? sorry this was long.

Get SharePod. it's a free download. Copy the downloaded file to your iPod, then run the program from your iPod. This will get all the music copied from your iPod (it will still be on the iPod) to your destination drive. From there, just drag the folder with all the music in it to the Music Window in iTunes. And Bob's yer uncle.

  • I Want To Duplicate The Songs In a Playlist Then Edit Them (But Keep The Originals Intact)

    I've done this before I can't remember how ...
I've made a special playlist.  Now I want to share that and rename the album name and the artwork for this special event -- but I want to keep the originals with original infor.
I thought there might be some sort of "duplicate" command but I'm not seeing it.
Wht I figure I do is take the playlist, highlight all the songs, go to advanced, Creat AAC Version and then on the AAC copies do the command i and edit information for multiple songs.  That way I keep the originals as is and have a playlist with "Happy Birthday" as the album name and a picture of a birthday cake as the album artwork.
    Is there an easier way?
    Thanks

    Thanks Limnos.
I know I'm close but I'm still missing something.  At least you agree there is a "duplicate" function out there.
Now ... what am I doing wrong?
When I highlight tracks then hit Command R nothing happens.  When I hit Command D I hear a faint electronic bong sound and nothing else.  When I right click I get:
And when I click on the Advanced tab I see:
    Any advice?
    Thanks

  • I have the computer with my itunes library on it but no longer have access to the email account the library was set up with. How can I transfer the library to a new appleid/email?

I have the computer that holds my itunes library. However, I no longer have access to the email account (and therefore apple account) it was set up with so can't sync/update etc. How can I transfer the library to my new apple id? Any help gratefully received as searched the internet but can't find the answer!
Have ipod touch 4th gen, ipod touch 5th gen and ipod nano 7th gen all to sync to library.

    Hi Stillme,
You cannot transfer purchases from one Apple ID to another. You need to go into the old Apple ID and change it to the new email address instead of using a new Apple ID altogether.
    Apple - My Apple ID
If you can't remember the password to the old ID, then click on Reset your Password, and answer the Security Questions. If you can't remember the Security Questions, contact iTunes Support and have them reset:
    APPLE ID SECURITY CONTACT NUMBERS
Once you get into your old account, Edit the Apple ID to your new email address. Before you will be able to do that you are going to have to change the email address on the new Apple ID to something else.
    Cheers,

  • HT5622 On my Ipad how can I change the apple/iCloud id to my husbands id but keep the iTunes id as mine

I Am trying to 'give' my iPad to my husband, when I try to change my iCloud id to his by entering his email it tells me this is already in use (he has an Apple  id for his iPhone). Another message I had was to use the new email address (his) with the old password (mine). I am confused - I did not have this problem when I gave him my iPhone 4s. (That was iOS 7 the iPad is now updated to iOS 8, if that makes a difference)
    thank you

    Hi Very Baffled,
Happy Holidays!  The article below outlines the recommended steps to take before giving your iPad to your husband.  The main point is to backup the iPhone, and then erase all content and settings.
That way, your husband will have a "new" device and when he sets it up with his own Apple ID ... all of his content will be added to the iPad.

If you still have your iOS device
Before you sell or give away your iOS device, make sure that you've removed all of your personal information. Follow these steps to protect your data and get your device to its factory default state for the new owner:
    Back up your device.
    Sign out of iCloud:
Tap Settings > iCloud, scroll down, and tap Sign Out. In iOS 7 or earlier, tap Delete Account.
Tap Sign Out again, tap Delete from My iPhone, then enter your password.
Go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap Erase All Content and Settings.
This will completely erase your device, including any credit or debit cards you added for Apple Pay and any photos, contacts, music, or apps. It will also turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, and other services.
If you're using iOS 7 or later and have Find My iPhone turned on, your Apple ID and password will be required. After you provide your password, the device will be erased and removed from your account so that the next owner can activate it.
Your content won't be deleted from iCloud when you erase your device.
Contact your carrier for guidance on transferring service to the new owner. If you aren't using a SIM-card with your device, you can contact them to get help transferring service to the new owner.
When the new owner turns on the device for the first time, Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.
Important: Don't manually delete contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photo streams, or any other iCloud data while signed in to your iCloud account, or the content will also be deleted from the iCloud servers and all of your devices that are signed in to iCloud.

  • Some of the apps in your itunes library were not installed on the iphone because they are not compatible with this iphone

To answer that question you would have to ask those companies.
To get around the issue, you could always install the older versions of those apps that do support iOS4, if you still have them or can find them.

  • "The iTunes Library.itl file cannot be found or created."

I have tried all to suggestions for moving around the old library and this is still the only thing I have gotten from the upgrade, as of yet. The message appears when trying to get into iTunes thu any source; desktop shortcut, thu the start menu, or opening the library directly in the My Music folder.
    The full message reads:
"The iTunes Library.itl file cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "My Music" folder."
I half expected a problem when i was told to upgrade, but I have got no idea how to fix this one. Any help would be great.

Will iTunes open at all or do you just get the error message and when you click 'ok' the dialog box closes?
I have successfully restored my library using the iTunes Music Library.xml file, which I figured out by messing around. If you want you can try this; note that it takes a really long time:
    1. With iTunes closed open the My Music>iTunes folder (if for some reason you had iTunes set up to use a different folder look in there). Move the 'iTunes Library.itl' file out of the folder onto your desktop, but don't delete it unless this restore works.
    2. Open iTunes; it should be empty. Go to File>Import. When the box opens you should be in the same iTunes folder; select the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file.
    3. The library will rebuild itself, which takes a long time (I think it took an hour when I did it and I have about 25GB), but just let it go. Don't stop the process or try to close iTunes while it's doing this. You should eventually get all your songs and playlists back, but I don't remember if playcounts restore this way; you might lose those.
    4. Close iTunes - it should now save the new 'iTunes Library.itl' file. Then try opening iTunes again - hope this will work for you! If it does you can just delete the old 'iTunes Library.itl' file. If it doesn't you can move that old file back to where it was, and you'll be back to where you were before.
Normally when the iTunes library.itl file gets corrupted you can replace it with an older version from the 'Previous iTunes Library' folder, but it sounds like you've already tried that and it didn't work. If this really is a registry issue I don't know how to fix that - maybe reinstalling iTunes?
ps - I always export my library before upgrading now, because restoring from that if you have a library problem is a lot faster and it only takes a few extra seconds.
