I want to open folders in new windows on 10.9.4.

This was always my default setting, but it seems to have disappeared.  Apple is ******** in changing essential workflows that people have been using for years.  There should be 2 options, open in new window, or not.  Give us back the option Apple.

This is a SIMBL plugin that will bring back the old behaviour of always opening folders in new windows, a feature that existed since the first Mac OS in 1984 all the way up to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion before Apple stupidly removed it in OS X 10.9 Mavericks. This works a treat.

  • Cannot open folders in NEW WINDOW

    Is anyone else having trouble with the Finder not opening folders in a new window?  I have gone to Finder preferences, and unchecked the box for "Open Folders in a new tab..." But I still cannot open my folders in a new window.  I have thousands of folders, and some are set to open in icon view, some in list view, etc. depending on the contents.  But now all that has disappeared.  Any suggestions???

    As others have said.....first, go to Finder > Preferences and make sure the checkbox is deselected for "open folders in tabs instead of new windows".
    Any folder can be opened in a new window by holding down the Command Key while double-clicking the folder. But sooner or later you will forget to hold down that key, and then a folder will open in a tab (which will probably resize the window and cause much aggravation and cursing).
    If you're like me and don't like tabs very much, there is a way to make folders always open in windows with a simple double-click. (I'm using Mavericks 10.9.5).  Go to any folder on the Desktop, open it, and select View > Hide Toolbar. After that, all folders within that folder will open in a new window. I tried this with the Macintosh HD Folder (which I put on my Desktop) and all folders within it open in new windows with only a double-click.
    Of course, you will lose the sidebar and the toolbar, so it's not a perfect solution, but at least you'll be done with tabs.

  • Opening folders in new window while in Search mode?

    In the Leopard file-search Finder you could double click the folder in the folder's location chain at the bottom of the Finder window and have that folder open in a new window. Now in Snow Leopard it opens it in the same window as it does for all the listed items above. Any way around this?

    Hi,
    the only way I know of the is to go to file and click for a new Window.
    Sounds like tabs maybe your thing, from Safari's Helpviewer. for more info look there.......
    To turn on tabbed browsing, choose Preferences from the Safari menu and click Tab. Select Enable Tabbed Browsing.
    To open a link or bookmark in the bookmarks bar in a new tab, hold down the Command key and click the item, or hold down the Control key, click the item, and choose Open in New Tab from the shortcut menu.
    To open a bookmark collection in the bookmarks bar or a folder of bookmarks in the Bookmarks Library in tabs, hold down the Control key, click the collection or folder, and choose Open in Tabs from the shortcut menu.
    If you select the Auto-Click checkbox for a folder in the bookmarks bar, then you can open all the bookmarks in the folder in tabs by clicking the folder name in the bookmarks bar.
    To open a webpage in a new tab, choose New Tab from the File menu and type the address for the page.
    To close a tab, click the close button in the tab.
    To quickly switch between tabs, press Command-Shift-[ and Command-Shift-].
    To show a webpage that is in a tab and close all other tabs, hold down the Option key and click the close box in the tab you want to remain open.
    When you click a link in a page you are viewing in a tab, the page opens in the current tab. Click the Back and Forward buttons in the address bar to scan pages you have opened in a tab.
    If you choose a page from the History or Bookmarks menu, the page opens in the current tab.
    Hope it helps you do what i think you are looking for.
    Cheers

  • Mavericks' Quick Look for joining QTs; adjusting brightness; & opening folders in new window

    In the absence of readable guidance from Cupertino I’m still riding bareback on Mavericks, having been rash enough to install it a couple of days ago. And I apologise if any of the following thoughts has already appeared in this website.
    1) For some occult reason Quick Look no longer allows me to string QuickTime movie files together for continuous play. A vandal seems to have been at work.
    2) Mavericks’ infamous refusal to recognise the (extended) diNovo Keyboard Mac® Edition’s venerable F1 and F2 keyboard tricks for lowering and raising the brightness of the screen has led me to ferret out a trick that does work with the diNovo in Mavericks: fn F14 and fn F15. That trick requires only one hand. Grudging tick, VG.
    3) Mavericks’ infamous refusal to recognise a simple double-left-click of the mouse as a way to open a folder in a new finder window has persuaded me to try to get into the habit of using single-right-click and then choosing the first of the options that appear in the little list, “Open in New Window”. That trick requires only one hand, and doesn’t involve the keyboard at all. All I need do is remember not to try the time-honored double-left-click method, which of course still works on my trusty PowerBook with OS 10.5.8.
      4) And I now understand why the boys and girls in Cupertino abolished the fully colored file-names or folder-names in the finder: They believed that we wanted to be able to assign more than one tag (formerly known as labels) to certain files or folders with the help of those tiny circular blobs and that we wanted to struggle to distinguish the blobs of one color from the blobs of another color.

    Ah. In the case of Quick Look my trouble is more complicated than I describe in my earlier post. I now see that my trouble with QL in relation to QuickTime in Mavericks is that in my main user-account QL happily opens a QT file that I created in that account, and strings together two or more QT files  for continuous playing, but that in a second user-account (whose original purpose was to let me test things when I struck a glitch when using my main account) QL  refuses to play pretty well any QT file that I created in that second account, and of course refuses to string together pretty well any group of QT files.
    And I find that in Mavericks when I do manage to get QL to play a QT file whose aspect-ratio I’ve already corrected permanenty in QL the ratio is (usually? I haven’t determined that yet) wrong when playing the file in QL. That problem doesn’t exist in my PowerBook with OS 10.5.8. My PB works perfectly in all matters to do with compatibility between QT and QL.
    I wish I hadn’t caught Mavericks, doctor. Is there a cure?

  • I just upgraded to 6.0 and links that want to open in a new window do not work. Right click and selecting open in new window does work.

    Similarly clicking a link in email does not open a window. I can drag the link to Firefox and a new tab opens.
    Also clicking Tools -> Add-ons does not open a tab as it used to.

    mha007, Thank you. I walked through your suggested solutions and finally disabled all add-ons and restarted them one by one. The culprit seems to be ViewSourceWith 0.8.11. Interestingly when it is enabled I had to go to TaskManager to force Firefox to quit.
    Maybe this information will help others. I don't know if the cache clearing etc helped but I would suggest that others start but Bringing up Firefox in Safe Mode (hold shift when you select the icon), disable all add-ons and then start them one by one.
    Of course if you have ViewSourceWith maybe you should just disable it first rather than go through the tedium of restarting each add-on separately. To get to the add-ons when it won't open from the toolbar type about:addons in the address area.

  • When I click on something to open, it gives me a prompt to open link in new window and i want it just to open, how do i do that?

    When I am searching the web and i click on a link it prompts me whether i want to open in a new window.  I used to click and it would take me right to the place i wanted to be.  how do i get that setting again?  I have since gone into preferences and told it to automatically open in tabs(?) but I am not sure how this works. Thanks for your help.

    Iss it possible that you are "right clicking" on the mouse? Go to System Preferences / Mouse and check the settings there are correct?

  • Opening new folders in new windows.

    After installing mavericks on an imac the folders (in icon view) all open in the same window instead of new windows although the preferences general "open folders in tabs" is unchecked; how do you get all folders to open in new windows?
    Thanks in advance,
    Burt

    OPTION+double-click will always open a subfolder in the same window, regardless if you have toolbar showing or not. I prefer the choice, so also have open folders in new window option selected. I'm not as minimalistic as you are.

  • How can I make a specific page open in a new window when clicked from a menu?

    Don't know if its possible but I have one specific page I want to open in a new window in the browswer when clicked on from a widget menu.  I know how to go in and put the coding in but it would be nice if there is some option in Muse to do that already.  Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

    ryanj4799 You'll need to change the Menu Type to Manual in the widget's options and add the links yourself. Then go to the Hyperlinks panel. Check the option to open in a new tab/window.

  • Unable to right click a link and open in a New Window

    Hello,
    I've been having problems with FF when I right click a link on any site, and I want to "Open Link in New Window", but it never happens. Then I tried to right click the same link and I "Open Link in New Tab", which works. What happened? Did the programmers/developers change something? I even tried it in "Safe Mode" with the same problem. Can anyone suggest anything? I almost tried everything imaginable, even running Windows 7 Ult SP1 in Safe Mode as well, with no help.
    Thank You.
    David

    Note that such issues are likely caused by one of the extensions that isn't working properly.
    So if it happens again then start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions).
    *Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
    If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
    Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)
    *If you have many extensions then first enable half of the extensions to test which half has the problem.
    *Continue to divide the bad half that still has the issue until you find which one is causing it.

  • Setting to open folders in new folders

    Upgraded from  SL to Mavricks. In SL, there was a preference to open folders in new folders instead of replacing the current open window. Did that go away as an option in Mavericks?

    open folders in new folders
    To open folders in new Window? Try Finder/Preferences/General - open folders in... Then control click the folder and you can open it in a new Window.

  • Spry Gallery - how to get large image to open in a new window?

    Hey guys,
    I'm building a new website and decided to use Spry for the Gallery section. It works like a charm but I want to get the larger version of the image to open in a new window when someone clicks on the normal image? It shouldn't be that difficult but I'm lost. Can anyone help?
    I believe I have to put a <a href> infront of the image something like this:
    <div id="picture">
            <div id="mainImageOutline" style="width: 0px; height: 0px;"><a href="?????" target="_blank" id="??????"><img id="mainImage" alt="main image" src=""/></a></div>
      </div>
    and something to the XML file...
    <photo
    path = "1.jpg"
    width = "300"
    height = "400"
    thumbpath = "1.jpg"
    thumbwidth = "56"
    thumbheight = "75"
    large = "galleries/xyz/large/1.jpg"   <------- this is the large image I want to open in a new windows
    >
    </photo>
    thanks!!

    Actually, the site is for my friend and she really likes this Gallery: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/demos/gallery/index-air.html
    I just want to keep this one and just edit it, so when I click on the image it opens the large image...

  • IWeb - cant adjust hyperlinks to open page in new window

    Anyone know of a work around to this obvious shortcoming? ...other then hacking the html code? the website is: www.apexjiujitsu.com
    My Links page is the one that I'd like to set parent=_ or whatever the value is for new window instead of same window

    Hi all.
    New to iWeb as well and am enjoying creating my website.
    Having played with HTML in the past and dreamweaver for creating pages, remembered there is a way to do this in a non-iweb way.
    The extra code that needs to be added at the end of your link is:
    target="_blank"
    Now how to get that in your iWeb page.
    What I did (worked for me each time) - copy the page you want to edit from your iDisk in the Finder window to a folder on your mac. Make sure to make a copy of this file in case you want to go back to the original.
    - Next open the page in Netscape (using ver 7.2). Pics did not show as I did not copy those.
    - In Netscape click File, Open File. Just navigate to your page location and click Open.
    One really neat feature I like about Netscape is that it comes with a built in web page editing tool.
    - Click File, Edit Page. Editing window appears.
    - Find the link you want to change and double-click it. It may try to open the link in new window, if it doesn't, don't worry about it. Or give you an error - close the error window.
    - Go back to the editing window and double-click on the link again. You should see a drop-down menu appear.
    - Click Advanced edit. There are two columns here - Attribute and Value.
    Attribute is what you want - ie open in a new window (target) and the Value is what happens next ie. opens the link in a new window.
    - Click on the Attribute drop-down at the bottom and choose "target".
    - Click on the Value drop-down and choose "_blank" (usually defaults to this).
    - Click OK and then OK again.
    Close the file and make sure to save.
    All I did then was copy the edited page to the iDisk folder wence it came from and overwrote the original (did you save a copy of the original in a safe location?).
    Opened the page in Safari or any other browser and voila' - link now opens in a new window/tab.
    Sorry for the long winded reply explanation. Wanted to be sure I didn't miss anything. ***Just be sure to save a copy of the original page your working on in a safe place in case you need to revert to the original.***
    Hope this helps.
    ps. Agree, adding an option to open links in new window should be put into the enhancements to come for iWeb.

  • When I open a new link or bookmark I want it to open in a new window not a slew of tabs so I can see which sites I have open.

    I'm sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology. When I open a new window or a link I want it to open a whole new window so I have 500 open FireFox tabs in my taskbar if I open that many windows. I do not like having everything open in one window. Used to be I could find how to undo that but you changed everything on me and now only rocket scientists can use your application. If Chrome and Internet Explorer weren't so ridiculous, I would change. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

    This didn't help me at all. I want a separate window to open each time I open a new tab or bookmark. Currently when I open a new link it just adds a tab to the window already open so from my non-technie point of view, I only have one window open and have to go up top to see what is open vs. being able to look below in my taskbar and see what I have open.
