I want to opt out of iCloud.

I don't think I signed up for iCloud when I started up this new mac.  I keep getting a notice on my screen, (really annoying, all the time) that iCloud is having trouble with the password.  I have been ignoring it for some time but I want it to go away.  When I went to uncheck "documents and data" from my iCloud it tells me that it will delete it from iCloud AND my computer!  I don't know what is saved but I don't want it to delete ANYTHING from my computer.
How do I avoid this and not have iCloud in my life.
I don't use iTunes with my Apple id, I share my husbands and I am afraid it is also going to screw that up.
I am now on Mavericks.

Sadly, it deleted my whole calendar, even tho I only used it on the laptop.  I am sure I will be missing documents, music, etc.   I have been using Macs since 1991 and this incident just *****!  I avoided this because I thought this would happen.  I hate to update for this same reason.

  • HT4436 I want to opt out of iCloud. How do I do this?

I updated to Maverick and suddenly iCloud is everywhere and there is no way to opt out as I was able to before. I don't want it being in charge of my files or passwords or anything. But it seems if I uncheck the items it decided to take over (Contacts, Documents, etc) my computer will delete them. I feel strongarmed into using iCloud.

Backup your data and sign out. Restore the data after you sign out. This is not complicated.

  • How can I opt out of iCloud if I accidentally opted in when I upgraded ios8?

    I recently upgraded my iPhone 5 to IOS8 (which was a nightmare but that's another story).  During startup on my phone when it asked me if I wanted to sign up for iCloud I clicked on Not Now and then Continue.  I now realize I should have clicked on Cancel.  I DO NOT want to use Apple iCloud but can't find a way to get rid of it or opt out.  HELP!  This whole IOS8 experience has been a nightmare and has really left a bad taste in my mouth about Apple.  I have never before even considered another smart phone but I am starting to...;

I'm sorry, but I do not understand your problem with iCloud. You need iCloud to have Find My iPhone, but it does not have to be used for anything else. I have it on all of my devices, but it is just so Find My iPhone is activated to locate and lock the phones in case of loss or theft. Please explain a little better the problem and what the problem is about opting out, since you say you did not sign up for it.

  • I accidentally opted in to the automatic reporting to Mozilla that came with the new firefox. I want to opt out. How?

Firefox automatically upgraded me to 7, which is fine, but when the page loaded there was a query at top - something like, "do you want to help mozilla by automatically reporting site load times etc."
I clicked yes, I meant to click no.
How do I opt out of this automatic reporting to Mozilla.

I see how now - Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > General.....Uncheck the box 'submit performance data'

If you selectedi opt out before the migration date, then your files will not be migrated to Revel. If you did not select opt out before the beginning auto- migration date (which has already passed) , then you ether have been migrated or will be migrated. Since Revel is free, why not give it a try?

  • I want to clean out my iCloud.  How do I do this?

I would like to clean out my iCloud (actual iCloud, not just what my phone sends, etc.).  I do not have Windows 7 or higher so I can not download iCloud on my laptop.
    Any other suggestions?

The only current version of Windows that can not run iCloud Control panel is XP.
iCloud Control Panel 2.1.3 for Windows Vista
Most iCloud data can still be access via a web browser on your computer by signing into iCloud.com with your Apple ID & password.
You would also lose Find My iPhone functionality.

  • HT4901 Do I have to manually save every single document and all data to my Mac if I opt out of iCloud?

    What a nightmare!
I upgraded my Mac OS X yesterday to Mountain Lion and with it came the choice to opt into iCloud. I NEVER usually go for this sort of thing as technology and I are not very close... but something in me said 'go on, get with the times' but I should have instinctively stayed right away from it because now that I want to turn it off it is giving me that awful message saying 'all documents and data will be deleted from this Mac' *** Apple... seriously?
Could you not have the option to 'save all documents and data to this Mac before deleting iCloud'? How easy would that make life...
As I'm not very tech savvy... PLEASE tell me how to go about ensuring all my documents and data (whatever the latter refers to) are safely saved on my Mac HD as they have always been... so that I can confidently get off the cloud!
I back-up often and use Dropbox for a few things and should have never gone down the path of iCloud (they should warn you of the consequences before you sign up).
    Thanks in advance.

Hi pvonk and thanks so much for taking the time to reply and for your intormation. Apologies if my post was confusing, I thought my intro was clear, i.e. the reason why I opted in and the reason for the post, i.e. the warning message that comes up. So if I may explain further... I don't want to use iCloud and should never have opted in, especially now I see how hard it is to get out.
Your instructions are clear but what worries me is that just the action of unchecking each switch in the iCloud preferences generates the warning I got (which prompted this post), i.e. it tells me if I do this the information / files / etc will be deleted from my Mac. I do not see the option you write about where I am asked to copy my contacts, etc saved in iCloud to my local drive.
However - are you saying that before the step of iCloud deleting my files from my Mac there is another step where iCloud actually asks you if you want to save the files to your hard drive?
I am a complete novice and your kindness and patience is appreciated. All I've done so far is accepted the invitation to join iCloud that generated when I upgraded to Mountain Lion OS X. I haven't manually saved anything to iCloud but I'm assuming it doesn't work that way. I'm assuming my files automatically got sent to 'the cloud' when I accepted the invitation. Am I correct in assuming this? I can still see all the files on my hard drive so does that mean I still have copies here? I really don't understand anything about iCloud and obvsioulsy should have just stayed right away from it. Unfortunately I now find myself in this situation and need to navigate safely out of it. I have so many important files on my Mac as I use it for my creative enterprise. ALL my photos and ALL my design files are stored here (and yes I back up regularly using My Passport).
I'm just really wary of accepting the prompt when I switch off each preference in iCloud because I don't want to delete all that important information from my Mac.
Have I confused you more or made my situation clearer? Hopefully the latter

  • HT4847 I want to clear out my icloud.

I want to clear my icould, I'm not sure if I have done it correcty. I went to icloud.com and reset my documents and data. Did I do this right? Is there anything else I should do?

Are you trying to delete all the data in your iCloud account?

  • How do I sign out of iCloud just on one device? And will deleting my account on iCloud completely delete the account or just on this one device?

I am sharing an iCloud account and I want to sign out of iCloud! But when I go to settings and my iCloud account the account name is ge
Grey as If I can't change it.

That means the Restriction is set that prevents changing accounts. Go to Settings>General>Restrictions and unset it so you can delete the account.
Deleting the account for one device does not effect the account on other devices.

Backup to computer first and sync Apps to iTunes first!
Restore in recovery mode will work, be persistent and retry
    Recovery restore challenges
    - computer didn't detect recovery iphone, attempted and failed 3 times
rebooted computer then recovery restore worked
    - recovery restore was successful, unlocked, and iMessage/Facetime, Find My Iphone, ALL WORKS!
    Restore from backup challenges
    * Make sure you have plenty of harddrive space!
    - have to restore first then restore from backup, i did this incorrectly by restoring from backup and the find my iphone feature got stuck forcing me to recovery restore
    - each restore from backup attempt will copy the original backup and create another backup folder. My original was about 10gb, so it copied another 10gb onto my computer's harddrive
    - when i restore from backup, my computer ran out of space and errored out/failed.
    - I tried again to restore from backup then figured out where the backup data folder was and tried to transfer to external harddrive but not quick enough and failed again.
    - finally cleared the extra backup data files and restore from backup was successfull
Missing apps from restore from backup
    - Downloaded all my missing Apps from APP store
    - I have 300+ apps and there are only 15 screen scrolls, have to organize before apps will populate and load, very difficult to organize now. Wished I had sync Apps first.
    Conclusion
This process took me literally 20+ hours to correct and will probably take me few more hours to organize the apps into their respective folders...
At least I got everything to work. Hope this helps!
