The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

How can I get Safari (on Mac) to play MPEG files on my website?

We have lots of media files and I want to play these files on Safari (on Mac) with QuickTime plug-in or VLC Web plug-in or anyting else...
These files' properties:
Extension: mpg
Video codec: MPEG Video (PAL) (Version 1)
Audio codec: MPEG Audio (Version 1) (Layer 2)
Multiplexed (muxed)
I tried QuickTime plug-in but it does not support the auido codec so the media file was shown with no sound. After a little research I found "QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component" which supports MPEG Audio Layer 2. But it is not free... (I have not tried it, maybe it won't work...)
After that I wanted to try "VLC Web plugin for Intel Mac" but it did not work on my Safari. I heard that this project has not developed for 3 years...
Is there any way to get Safari to play MPEG files?
Note: No, I can not change media files' codec...

No sound when playing mpeg files

I can't get quicktime to play sound when I try to play videos that are mpeg files. I already downloaded mpeg-2 playback as well as Perian 1.0 but it still won't play sound. Any suggestions?

1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
2. Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.

Another trick: If you have GarageBand installed, open it (maybe open a GarageBand document) and then quit out of the application.

From day to an other day, I dont know why, but quick time stop to produce sound and it is affect too the player of Itunes. It is the same effect for all my mpeg files.

Hi! I'm having a similar issue. Also on QT 7.1.3 and the latest Flip4WMV, all of the sudden a couple of days ago I lost audio on my MPEG files. In addition, when the video first starts, it pauses for 0.5-2s and then starts playing. The audio indicators at the bottom show a quick spike and then nothing.
I opened the Audio MIDI Setup and under the Audio Output section is says Output Is Not Supported! I also tried the Garageband trick and it does not work.
WMV and MP4 video play just fine. It's only regular MPEG files (I assume MPEG-1 and MPEG-2). And all my files play just fine in VLC and MPlayer2.
Any help would be appreciated.

Play ts file extensions on Nokia N8 through the br...

Will the browser update in Februarys firmware allow me to play .TS (Transport Video Streams).
I want to be able to watch channels from my satellite reciever on my phone. I have a vu plus satellite reciever which runs the open source software Enigma2. The same software/operating system as on a dreambox, technomate, Duolabs, infact the enigma2 software for satellite receivers is pretty much the norm now. If possible I would like to be able to open the web interface in the browser, (which I can do currently at the moment with my n8). and play the TS video stream.
I could view my satellite channels on my iphone using airvideo, and I believe you could view video streams on the n95 using coreplayer, although this is only what I have read..
Even Android users will be getting a vlc player, although its only in beta so I cannot comment on how well it streams videos...
My question is are there any apps for hte N8 in the ovistore or elsewhere that let me watch video streams (play .ts file extensions). Or any apps that let me watch satellite channels on my Nokia N8.

Unable to play dcf files included with nokia 5130

my nokia 5130 came preloaded with lots of music files. But I am unable to play some of the file marked as "dcf". When i try to play these files i receive following error : Please activate <song name>.dcf
Other mp3 are playing fine.

u can call up the nokia careline number and can hav a word with the support people .
they vil send u the activation keys and u can play the songs after that.
i think am posting the reply to this very late but i got the phone yesterday and i got a solution to it today it self.

Quick Look will not play MPEG files

I know this is possible because before I bought a new hard-drive it worked. I deleted the preferences file and restarted my computer to no avail.
Any other ideas?
Perian and Flip4Mac are installed.

If the files are MPEG-2 then you'll need additional software to view them in QuickTime Player.
Perian doesn't open MPEG-2 nor does Flip4Mac.

Itunes doen't want to play wma file already on computer

I just got a mac and copies a folder from my PC to my mac, some of it contains MP3's which itunes recognises places in library and plays, but the wma file it won't do anything with, it wont import, cant drag and drop into itunes and wont play it, only quicktime plays it!! i tunes for windows used to automatically convert those and play without a problem. What should i do??!!

As you've discovered, the OS X version of iTunes doesn't play or convert wma files; Mac users generally do not use them, as they are a proprietary Microsoft format.
You can use Switch to convert the wma files on your Mac.

Which sound card you have? Try updating the Playcenter or uninstall and reinstall the PlayCenter. Do you have other AC3 decoder installed too? Perhaps those are conflicting with the PlayCenter.
