I want to plug my MacBook Pro into a nest-box webcam -- any ideas?

Hi there.
I bought my children a nestbox with built-in webcam for Christmas. It has a USB connection, but the software provided only runs on a Windows PC ("It just doesn't work") and, like the OS those things work on, the software is c**p and horribly clunky. It took ages to install and get it running and I hate using those useless pseudo-computers. I'm guessing it has a cheap, generic (480x320 pixel) camera built in, since there are no brand-names visible on either the packaging or the documentation. (I've been on Mac since 2006, rarely had any regrets for making the change while using the Mac, and none while using a PC.)
Since it doesn't just plug in and play, I did a web search for suitable software to run a webcam from a Mac, but I can't find an app that both disables the inbuilt iSight camera and allows viewing and recording of images from the webcam. Ideally what I'd like would be something that would allow me to use QuickTime or iMovie to view and record, without me having to do what I am not competent to do, such as put extra files into library folders or put a front-end onto a background program like Macam (which I did find, but doesn't seem to do what I need).
What I need, basically, is an app that, while running, disables iSight for its own use, but allows the iSight to be used by other apps if needed, receives and interprets data from the external webcam and displays the images, and either makes video files for itself or taps into the recording capability of another app without me having to do lots of switching and command-line stuff that I don't understand; OR a plug-in/modification for an existing view/record app (QuickTime/iMovie etc) that enables the app to switch between iSight and external webcams for viewing and recording. And it has to leave the Apple Mac boast intact ("It just works") and not interfere with other programs.
Please can anyone help me?

  • Plugging 2011 Macbook pro into my HDMI TV

Hello all. I am about to buy a 2011 13" Macbook Pro. My first Mac. I have done some reading on the mini display port and it's computability with HDMI. From what I've read it is also known as DP++ and it passes the signal straight through as HDMI with the use of an adapter. However, the audio is only passed through if the PC supports HDMI signaling, which I believe the 2009 Macbooks didn't. I don't know if that's since changed on the new models. I have read that you have to use an adapter then plug that into a cable with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other and then use a "y" cable for the audio plugged into your amp for sound. I have seen on a Display Port web page, what looked like an adapter with display port one side and HDMI the other, does this exist as it seems better than the DVI to HDMI approach.
    So in summary
    1) What's the best way to connect my 2011 Macbook Pro to my HDMI TV ?
    2) Can I get the audio to the TV through the Display Port without having to use a Y cable from the Macs audio out ?
    Thanks

Does the MiniDisplay -> HDMI adapter work with the new MacBook Pro (early 2011) ?

  • Plug the macbook pro into a timer?

    hey guys,
i have been reading up on how to keep my new macbook pros batter life lasting longer. i read somewhere to unplug it when it is fully charged and to charge it a different levels during use.
would it be a good idea to plug it into a wall timer. that way it will only charge for a little bit of time randomly?
Just a crazy idea i had.
    Steve

Hmm...your getting some funky advise from what you are reading.
Just plug it in and leave it plugged in when not in use.
Use it with or without your wall plug when you do use it. Make sure you run it on your battery an hour once a month or so, and you will have zero problems.
Lots of people never unplug their MBP's and just use them as desktop replacements. Others run them down to zero all the time between charges...
But your not going to save any battery life by unplugging after it's charged. Once its charged, if its plugged in, it stops charging and uses only a trickle charge as needed to keep it topped off while not in use.
Don't worry about it -- use it like any other laptop, and enjoy your machine.

  • I plugged my macbook pro into an external monitor, then unplugged it later and now it is stuck with black borders on top and bottom and zoomed out like it is still on the monitor. How do I fix it?

I started using my external monitor with my macbook pro and as soon as I plug it in it to the monitor it adjusts the screen by zooming out a bit and creating about 3/4 of an inch black borders on the top and bottom of the screen. But these dont show up on the monitor so I assumed it was fine. But when I took it off the monitor, the borders were still there like it was still on the monitor. Any hellp? Its starting to mess with my eyes haha.

    Hi aefulcher,
It sounds like you had the external display set to mirror the internal display so the resolution(s) were changed to match each other.

  • My macbook pro has started running slowly! Any ideas?

My macbook pro has started running slowly. Particularly the internet (firefox and safari). I have tried repairing the disk / verifying the disk and the permissions via Disk Utility, and have also tried uninstalling and re-installing firefox, and updating the software (all up to date). None of this has helped.
The old Dell laptop we have is running faster than my mac!
I also have Parallels Desktop Installed with Windows 7, although this has never caused a problem in the past...
I am running with Mac OS X, Version 10.6.8, processor 2.66Ghz Intel Core Duo, and 4GB memory (it's normally lightning fast!).
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

This is a known problem with Parallels and the recent update for 10.6.8.  You do not need to actually have Parallels running to experience the problem and there is nothing in Activity Monitor that would indicate the issue is related to Parallels.  You can find the explanation on Parallels site.  They have put out an update to correct the problem:

  • Late 2011 macbook pro getting hot and running slow, any ideas?

In the last week my macbook pro has been getting very hot (too hot to rest on knees) and sometimes running slow.  It will often cool down after a while but the fan seems to be running more frequently as well.  Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

  • Itunes is causing my Macbook Pro to freeze at shut down, any ideas?

For a while I was confused as to why my brand new Macbook Pro was failing to shut down. I continued to use it, and each time I would shut my computer off it would freeze with a loading dial in the lower-middle part of the screen. Eventually I started to run one program at a time. I ran Safari (among other programs), and the computer shut down fine. I ran Itunes, and the computer failed to shut down. I have also realized that Microsoft Office causes my computer to freeze at shut down as well. I have run disk utility to check my hard-drive. Everything came out fine, so I know it is not a hardware problem. Something with the software of Microsoft Office and Itunes are not functioning properly... Anybody have any ideas?

  • CAN I TURN MY MACBOOK PRO INTO A MONITOR?

Help I want to turn my Macbook Pro into a monitor for my Playstation 2 so that way I can record on my screen using quicktime. please help I used a vga adapter from apple a AV to vga converter, and is their any way for me to use an iphone on a mac to play ios games while recording?

I don't think you can without some sort of capture card (very expensive, and because most MacBook Pros don't have a card, you need to use the FW800).  MBP's Thunderbolt port only sends video signals out, you can't attach an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable from your camera to the MBP and expect to show video.
You could try a utility like Sofortbild.

iCloud storage is largely designed for syncing of daily work processes and "short term" storage for IOS devices.
Your best back-up ifor OSX photos s to an external drive or a Time Capsule.

  • I want to charge my macbook pro in my campervan, what is the best way

when i go travelling i want to charge my macbook pro on the move, not noticed a in car charger, although i have seen a in plane charger,is there any difference between my swift kontiki and a boeing 747.

Apple's Airline adapter is designed for the apx 15V DC of airlines to NOT charge the computer's battery, rather to slowdown the battery discharge and extend the use of the computer. It also works in vehicles with 12V DV although it's not as strong as the 15V on airplanes.
So that means you need a fully charged battery before you use the Airline Adapter.
To CHARGE your battery your going to have to use the powerbrick adapter for household current on a house hold current outlet, that's in most cases the only thing strong enough to push the electrons back into the battery.
DO NOT USE step up transformer devices that tap off the vehicles 12V up to 110v and then use the Mac's powerbrick to attempt to charge the laptop, it WILL PROBABLY FRY YOUR VEHICLES ELECTRICAL SYSTEM as most vehicles are not designed for that purpose to draw that much current.  Most are just strong enough to power the car, the lights, charge the battery and your light your cigarette.
Unless you specially know it can handle it, like big RV's and boats have large appliances powered by the engines 12V system, likely the engine will have to be running all the time to produce that much power to feed the power needs of the converter and the powerbrick to charge the battery.
IF you had a portable generator that could produce enough watts to power a small air conditioner, then you could use the 12v DC to 110v AC converter and the Mac's powerbrick to charge the battery. But most generators of that capability already have built in 110v convertors.
Now there is another option, because the MBP uses DC and the 12V is DC you can use a adpater to convert one to the other, no step up or down needed, so you wouldn't need such a strong source of DC current to use the 110v converter.
Unfortunatly Apple's MagSafe connector is proprietary and patented technology and Apple doesn't want anyone using it. So your stuck either splcing in a MagSafe or using a bootleg charger out of China someplace with no recourse if it fries your Mac.

  • Able to Dock MacBook Pro into iMac Display?

I have a MacBook Pro which I keeped docked into/connected to my Apple LED Cinema Display when I'm not on the road or at meetings outside of my office. This allows me to work with my MacBook Pro closed and with a keyboard and mouse at hand, almost as if I'm using a desktop.
My father's asked me to look into purchasing an iMac for his home, which I frequently visit. Would it be possible for me to dock my MacBook Pro into the iMac display similarly to how I can dock my MacBook Pro into my Apple LED Cinema Display? (And, if so, are there any additional accessories I need to do this?)
For example, can I close my notebook? Can I use the iMac mouse and keyboard? Can I play music on the iMac speakers? Can I use the iSight camera? I realize the iMac needs to be turned on when being connected to, which implies that the iMac operating system and programs would be running in the background, but can I basically keep the iMac operating system and programs "hidden" so that it feels like I'm purely using my MacBook Pro?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

Backup your data off the machine to a external drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
Create another Admin account in System Preferences and log into it, delete your Admin Account and reboot.
Optional: Open Disk Utility and Erase Free Space (Zero good enough, 7x for military level, both take time)
This should be good enough to remove just your account and data without the hassle of reinstalling the OS and all new programs again.
However if you need that level, then c boot off the 10.6 disk (or command r boot on Lion) and use Disk Utility there to Zero or 7x erase the OSX drive/partition, quit and reinstall OS X. Much more work that likely is unnecessary in your case.
    Good Luck.

  • Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Hi, yes preferences sees there is a second display it recognises what make of monitor it is etc but I just get a blank blue screen on the monitor when I change it to the hdmi setting! I have tried with mirroring on and off, rearranging the displays in the preference window and lots of different resolution settings but with no difference.
An old MacBook connects fine so the monitor and hdmi port must be okay. I'm sure we have used the cable before but it could have been with the previous MacBook Air. The current one I'm using is a mid 2011 version running lion and is (according to software update) all up to date.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!
