I want to put a new phone number in a used iphone 3Gs

I am getting a new iPhone 4GS. I would like to let my son have my old 3GS. How do I reprogram the 3GS to his phone #?

The phone number is tied to the SIM card installed in the phone.

Where is the phone number on the iPod?
If you have an iPhone with iOS and use the same ID for Messages and FaceTime as on the iPod the iPhone's phone number will be listed for Messages and FaceTime on the iPod.
If you changed phone numbers on the iPhone, sign out of Messages and FaceTime and then sing back in. Then do the same a little while later on the iPod.

Open Messages on your Mac, then go to Messages>Preferences, select Accounts, select your iCloud account, then click Sign Out. Then sign back in with the ID your phone is using for iMessage.

If I get this right, you've ported your phone number to AT&T with the purchase of the iPhone. That is considered opening your own account under your name. Your brother's account is not ported to AT&T unless you used his SS# instead of yours. Your brother still has his account under Verizon Wireless, all you did was use your cell phone number to when you opened your own AT&T account.
If you don't want to use your Verizon Wireless phone #, my suggestion is to call AT&T customer service and explain that you want a new phone number instead of the ported Verizon number.

Long story: My son broke his iphone 4 screen through repeated droppings. But my wife upgraded from her iphone 4 to the 5, and wants to give said son her unblemished 4. I ordered an iPhone 5s in early September from the orange shop in Chamonix Mont-Blanc France.
I needed a new phone as i dropped my iPhone and broke it so it thought i would upgrade.
I was asked in the shop if I wanted a black or white one, I asked for a Black one, as all my iPhones have all been Black as I DON'T LIKE White ones. (sorry)
I was told my phone would arrive in a week so I waited with broken phone for new one. The following week I was told it would be the following week, the following week i was told the same but the assistant in the shop told me they would ring me when it arrived. Three days later i recieved a text from the shop to say the phone would be in tomorrow, when I went in they said it had not arrived and they would call me when it was in the shop.
They called me on Thursday the 17th of October to say the phone was in the shop.
I arrived at the shop at 6:00pm after my work, the shop closes at 7:00pm. I recieved the phone, signed for it and extra unwanted insurance with I was told I could only canceled in a month. I was then told they didn't have any sim cards in the shop, i said no problem the Phone i assume will need charging so i will take it home and charge it and return for the sim tomorrow.
So the Phone remained boxed.
When I returned home and opened the box I realised it was a white one, I replaced the lid put it back in the bag, and returned it to the shop first thing Friday 18th October, to point out the error, only to be told "to bad" ?? I was told I could have changed it the night before but not this morning? They said I had ordered a Black one but as I had signed for a White one nothing can be done. I was angry and left the shop. I returned later the same day with a French friend to try and resolve this problem, as I wasn't sure if something was being lost in translation. I didn't think I was being unreasonable, it is a very expensive piece of equipment and this wasn't what i wanted. They told my friend that the phone was not available in Black, that was the 5, and that the 5s was only available in silver and gold, and that mine was a silver one.
I then thought it was my mistake as it was a new phone. She put a sim in the phone put it in the box and I left for a business meeting only to arrive and see a Black iPhone 5s sitting on the table??
So I then returned back to the shop with the Black one and mine still all boxed and untouched to prove they had blatantly lied to me an hour ago, only to be told that there was nothing they were prepared to do.
Is this fair practice ? I am at a loss with this and am looking for help ?

A minor point, but it may avoid a little confusion if, instead of saying "black" in reference to the iPhone 5s, say "space gray":

No you will not lose any data. However a pop up will come up telling you if you want to sync with this computer, and that if you do, that it will erase the data. Just click "No" and you can still update your phone. I've done this a few times.

Message : when I write a new phone number to send a message to, the Historical data appears. How can I delete and reinitiate it ?

I backed the new phone up from iCloud which was still attached to the old number (for example, when I attempt to sync Keychains, the security code continues to be sent to the old number). When a contact gets a new phone number, I delete the old and enter the new. Then when I text or call the old number shows up as a selection yet it's no longer under the contacts info.

When a contact gets a new phone number, I delete the old number and enter the new number. When I try to text or call, both the old a new numbers. One up as a selection choice, even though the old number is gone from the contact.

That's normal behavior as the old one will remain in the memory cache for a while until it's eventually overwritten. If it's particularly bothersome to you, you can restore your phone as NEW and this will empty the cache.

Do I have to add a new contact for each new phone number?

I just got my phone and I'm adding in my contact manually. I don't see multiple spots for multiple phone numbers for one person? Do I have add a new contact for each phone number a person has? (I.e. One for their home number, one for their work number, one for their cell number).

No.
There is no reason to have a default number of phone number entries that may not all be used and the same for email addresses.
When manually entering contact info, after entering the first number for a contact, a new phone number entry is made available directly below.

HT3529 New Phone Number Linking to Messages

I have a new phone number and am having trouble getting the new number to appear on my iPhone 4S under the Messages/Settings.
Even though the old number has been deactivated, messages are still being sent/received by the old number.
It's been approximately 72 hours since the new number went into effect. How do I get this to update?

For me this method did not work.
However as you can see from the other posts for some people it does.
There is not really enough info to determine what was different about those that worked.
