I want to record 5+ hours with iSight in iMovie'08

I am trying to record my dog while I'm at work using my iSight in iMovie '08. The only problem is that when I come home to playback what's been recorded, it's only recorded approximately one hour and 45 minutes. Is there any way I can make it record for the entire 5 hours that I am away? Thanks!

Welcome to Discussions, Fran.
Some suggestions for your consideration:
(1) As a dog lover, my best suggestion is that you take pooch to work or change jobs to a place that allows it. Being a pack animal, puppy will miss you HORRIBLY while you are away unless there is some other part of the "pack" there.
(2) iMovie should work if you have space. However, digital video takes a LOT of space (220 Mb/minute!), so a lack of free space will cause problems for you.  To work properly, OS X also needs additional free space beyond that required for file storage. For "5+ hours" of recording with iMovie, check to be sure that you have about 100 Gb of available space on your hard disk.
If space is a problem and you cannot delete enough of your files for sufficient room, you might consider storing or moving your video library to an external hard disk.
(3) Also, to reduce processor load for capture and recording, quit all other apps before starting your iMovie session. Do anything else you can to reduce processor and disk workload while you record, too.&ensp.For instance, if you use wireless, turn off your Airport card.
(4) Be sure your Mac is running at its peak. Your system info shows that you are still using Mac OS X (10.5.3). Unless there is compelling reason to the contrary, you should update to the latest version of Leopard. If you do not want to upgrade to Snow Leopard, use 10.5.8.
If you upgrade to 10.6, follow its instructions. Otherwise, I suggest the following method for updating your OS:
First, use Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then download and apply the 10.5.8 COMBO update:
  http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
Repair permissions IMMEDIATELY again after the restart that finishes the installation.
(5) One other alternative is to try a different application for your video recording. Although many apps can record movie or video clip, I usually use QuickTime Pro. QT Pro is easy to use, and it has a Preferences... > Recoding setting that allows you to change the recording quality to capture smaller files. These smaller video streams might work better for the long duration recording you want.

Who do you think I am? Santa Claus?
What you need is not a mixer, but an audio interface with at least 4 mic inputs. There is a lot of choice there, but you should indicate a budget. You can go from, say, € 300 to € thousands, if you want.
    Roland UA 1010
    Focusrite Scarlett 18i8
However, there are other options (like multi-out mixer plus multi in interface, or standalone mic preamps plus interface with 4 inputs, etc). I have little experience using these however so I really cannot say much about which one(s) to get. The two mentioned above both have four mic preamps, but they are by no means the only way to do it.
The cheapest solution I can think of is to get a second 1204USB, plug it in, and in OS X create an Aggregate device (=the two are being merged into 'one virtual' interface with two discrete stereo (= four discrete mono) inputs. Disadvantage: you keep the same (limited) soundquality of the 16 bits convertors. Getting any of the interfaces mentioned earlier will also mean you'll make the significant step up from 16 to 24 bits sound.

  • Recording in QT with iSight - recording time & higher quality video

    Hi
I would like to make long recordings with iSight & QT. I want to just click the record button and forget about it for several hours. I know I have ample disk space. I'm wondering if there is any automatic shut-off feature that I have to be aware of. Is the iSight/QT set to stop recording after a certain amount of time?
Also, while I like the quality of the "Better" setting (H.264, 240x180), I'm wondering how to get even better quality within QT. "Good" and "Better" seem to be the only two settings.
    Many thanks
    steve

iSight automatically shuts off (actually goes to low-power mode; see How to turn iSight (really) off) only if it is not in use.
Video files require large amounts of disk space. If you are using external Firewire drives for "several hours" of disk space, be aware of Possible hardware or software conflicts. iSight can be picky about how and with what it shares the Firewire connections on your Mac.
You are correct that there is no "More Than Better" setting in QuickTime Pro. For more info on QT settings and whether QT Pro can automatically shut off, try QT Discussions if you do not get authoritative answers here.

  • I want to record a concert with my iPod touch

    Hi!
I've got one iPod touch 4G with 8GB and I'm going to a concert on December and I wanted to record the audio of it with some quality, at least medium quality.
Do you know any application that I can use for it? Or should I record it with an other device?

You might want to check here, to start off:
    http://forums.ilounge.com/misc-gear/241804-recording-concerts.html
There's even an app, though you'd best advised to upgrade your mike:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/concert-recorder-cd-quality/id338045354?mt=8
So much depends on your criteria for a tolerable recording; I don't know what "medium" quality is. Realize, however, that the best live recordings are taken off the sound board, or were specifically mixed for a live concert. Otherwise, there's going to be a problematic level of ambient noise.
You might find it more instructive to record live gigs at clubs as a test before you do the final recording in December.

  • Recording smooth video with iSight using Glow effect

I want to use iSight's Glow effect with a video recording. PhotoBooth software does it very jerkily. iChat does it smoothly, but I don't see a way of recording video without having a chat with someone. iMovie 08 doesn't seem to be able to create the Glow effect. Any ideas how to do this?

    Hello Steve Mouzon
The closest you will likely come to Photo Booth's Glow with the other apps you mention is to try the Video FX in iMovie 6 HD's "Editing" window. Some experimentation will let you know if it can meet your needs.
If iMovie 6 HD was not installed along with your iMovie '08, see this post for help:
      http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6991973#6991973
If you need more powerful effects control than that, you can consider the professional applications like Motion that make up Final Cut Studio. For more info, take a look at RedTruck's post here or other Final Cut Studio > Final Cut Pro Discussions topics.
Other alternatives that may be worth your consideration are ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS CS3 PROFESSIONAL or creating your own "glow" filter.

  • Movie not recording in QT with isight cam

    Hi all,
My isight is properly connected to my G4 MDD via firewire port. I get this message trying to save my movie clip," Recording failed because no data was received. Make sure media input is turned on and playing." My iSight is connected and working fine. I see green light on front and audio is working. What can it be?
    Thanks for your help

    Hi
My iSight connection is up fine when viewing it on my Apple profiler. I also did an audio test and it came up fine. I also connected my iSight cam to my G4 AGP tower and it works perfectly. What can it be that my G4 MDD displays "no recording was received."

  • Help recoreding with Isight in Imovie HD

Hi, I bought an Isight the other day and i am having a tough time figuring out how to get the Ichat to recored or show up in Imovie Hd. I went to help in Imovie and i read them, but when it says clcik the triangle next to the camera mode, there is no triangle, I just got a 12in Powerbook and i am still trying to find my way through iMovie. Please help me get my Ichat in iMovie

    Hello Nicholas.
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you "... have everything but my mouse unplugged from the USB and Firewire ports." you have "No Camera Attached".
    Try plugging in your iSight
    b before
    you launch iMovie.
    If iMovie
    b then
does not recognize iSight, leave your iSight plugged in, quit iMovie and immediately launch QuickTime Pro or iChat AV. If either of these apps now recognize your iSight, perform your regular Mac OS X maintenance and try again.
If you iMovie still does not recognize iSight but other apps do, I would guess that you have a problem with your iMovie itself. In that case, I suggest you try the FAQs or relevant topics in iMovie HD Discussions.

  • Recording with iSight???

    Hello!
I was wondering if it is possible to record off of my television with iSight/iMovie? Simply pointing the iSight at the TV really isn't what I'm looking for. I was hoping that there is a way I could get iSight/iMovie to work as a capture card.
If this is possible, what types of cables would I need?
    Thanks,
    Hunter

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, JHB1422
The only way to use iSight to capture your TV is the way you do NOT want to use.
Neither iSight nor iMovie can function as a capture card. Additional hardware is required.
There are a number of Mac compatible TV capture devices available. The Apple Store sells Elgato EyeTV Hybrid.
Your Apple retailer may be able to suggest other ways depending upon what equipment you already own. Moreover, your dealer can certainly help you determine what cables are needed to connect your system components to any new equipment you select.

  • Recording in 16:9 with iSight

Hey, I'm curious, I swear that I used to be able to record video's with my iSight in 16:9 in iMovie '08. I've got everything checked off to be in 16:9, and I even found a movie that I exported that is in widescreen, but now everything I do ends up being in 4:3. Any suggestions on how I might be able to fix this and get back to recording in widescreen with my built in iSight?

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Daniel Dop
Your iSight only captures video in its native format.  Use the iMovie > File > New Project... menu command and then set the Aspect Ratio at 16:9 before you record your iSight video clip. iMovie will automatically crop it to the selected 16:9 format when it processes your capture.

  • I want recording LP's with Audacity 2.0.5 since I use Maverick I can't hear the sound before recording. What can I do?

I want recording LP's with Audacity 2.0.5. Since I use Maverick 10.9.3 I can't hear the sound before recording. Does somebody know how to get
the presound before to click on record?

You have to do some work on your own.

  • IMovie not recording sound with iSight image

In system preferences > sound, I have Built-in microphone selected. But Audacity won't record sound (never works anyway) and iMovie will record image from the iSight, but no sound.
    What am I missing?

You're welcome. After further investigation, not only does the volume in the system preferences affect the mic, the actual "voice over" (microphone icon) does as well, even though I'm recording with iSight and not, specifically, a voice over.
However, fantastic YouTube video diaries or whatever they're called must be done on a PC or a Mac that knows how to shut up. If there's one thing right now that's about to make this computer fly through the air, it's the fans that rev up to 6000 and even an external mic picks up the noise. Not much I can do about it. Maybe Snow Leopard and iLife '09 solved the issue.

  • Record with iSight gets me a 00:00 clip

I have connected my iSight with my iMovie and can get it to record, but then after a few seconds when I click "Record with iSight" again to stop recording, the clip shows as 00:00.
I don't know much about iMovie yet, but it seems like if it worked there would be an actual clip length displayed.
Please help if you can! Thanks.

  • Just want to record motion detect video with WVC80N

All I want to do is record motion detected video while I'm at work and view it when I get home.  I don't want remote access and I don't care about email notifications.  Does someone have some SIMPLE instructions for how to get this working?  I've read many of the posts on this forum and found all kinds of complex setups involving multiple webpages and port forwarding, etc., etc.  I just can't believe it's this complicated just to set up something simple.  BTW -- I have no problem viewing live video either through the camera utility or via web browser.  I can do instant recordings, but no motion detected video.  IMHO the camera itself is great, but the support is pathetic.  Camera utility program is terrible.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you want to record motion detected video for WVC80N then install your Internet Home Monitoring Camera with the disk here is the link - http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=20543&userrole=Links... .
Then open up the Linksys Wireless-N IP camera has a built-in web-based setup. Here is the link for Installing WVC80N using the Web-Based Setup Page:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=22473&userrole=Links...
After doing all the procedure open up the utility and click on settings tab and click on browse and select the the destination where you want to save the recorded files..
