I want to remap my macbook function buttons without pressing fn

Hi
I have a new MBP
I have unchecked the box that lets me use function keys for other than their original purposes
So now I can use e.g. my last volume button to work instead as a Mission Control / Show desktop function that is really useful for me as I have one funcitonal hand.
However I'd like to remap or reassign the function buttons. For example my F1 F2 now do nothing - I could assign them to certain other  functions, but I'd like to assign them back to screen brightness.
Is there a way I can do this?
And is there a way i can consign the dashboard to the bin, and use that button for something thats actually useful ?
(Sorry for the repost, I accidently placed it first in a macbook forum)
Thanks,
tom

You can install this into OS X and access the files on Windows side and transfer them to a external drive.
http://ntfsmounter.com/
You can also use Winclone to clone Windows (from OS X) to a external drive.
Once you got a copy of your files off both partitions...
You can insert the OS X disk of the OS your using into the computer and reboot holding c
On the second screen you have the option to reinstall OS X (and bundled apps) overwritting what you already have. Your files, account's and third party programs should remain though.
Use the uninstaller of the program to remove it.
If you want to erase everything in your OS X partition you can use Disk utility from the installer disk, it's under the Utilities menu in the Installer.
If you accidentially select your hard drive you can erase both partitions.

I did not explain myself because that is patently NOT true. I have 4 laptops at this time. In all of them when I press F5, it is F5 not screen brightness or what ever. In order to access the 'blue' functions like screen brightness, keyboard lights, speaker volume etc. I have to press and hold the fn key. However, on my Envy, I have to press and hold the fn key to access F5 rather than just turning on and off the keyboard lights. Now I wish I could reword this thread.
OK. I don't claim to be perfect. I just looked at three of the notebooks currently at home The newest, which is a dv7-4180ea (HP loaner) has F keys is configured like on your Envy. The HP NX6320 and the Toshiba Satellite M305D have the F keys as main and have secondary functions. They are more straightforward with the use of the Fn key. It appears that it depends on what the manufacturers decided to do at the time.
BTW if you look back at my unedited post you will see that I did indeed qualify my statement when I wrote it with the word some. So that is not a patently untrue statement. I try to choose my words carefully.  I will edit this post so you can see what I mean.

how do i delay the screensaver kicking in? I want to have the music function available without havingto constantly press slide to open. Ipod touch.  Thanks

On the iPod, go into Settings/General/Auto-Lock and set that for the amount of time you want, form the choices given.
However, a note of caution; this isn't a screensaver function, it's there to prolong battery life. The longer the screen is on before turning itself off, the more battery you are using and the shorter the time before you run out of power.
There's possibly a better way for you to use you iPod than to keep the screen on. Why are you constantly going into the music function? If it's to select a new track, you could possibly use the Shake To Shuffle feature, which will select a new track at random when you shake the iPod. Alternatively, use the basic Shuffle feature. Or create a Playlist (on the iPod), where you can select the songs you want to play at that time, put them in one list and let the iPod play them.

  • U530 function keys without pressing Fn key

I just bought a new IdeaPad U530 laptop and using a function key requires pressing both the Fn key and the specific function key wanted.  Other postings show how to change that on other models and one said that the answer was in the User's Guide.  Neither the User's Guide which was preloaded on my laptop nor the one I downloaded address this.  Every other laptop that I've ever had doesn't require using the Fn key and it's a real pain to have to press both keys together.  I use function keys much more often than the functions that are triggered when the Fn key is not pressed.  Can anyone help?

    hi dfmyrick,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Looking at Chapter 1 - Page 3 of the Ideapad U530 Users Guide, there's a note where you can toggle Hotkey Mode in the BIOS (this is the option where you don't need to press the Fn key for the function keys to work).
    - Link to picture
    Can you try to:
    1. Boot into the BIOS via the UEFI Firmware Settings
    2. In the BIOS, navigate to the Configuration Tab and look for Hotkey Mode or Hotkey Switch then set the value to HotKey Mode or Enabled.

    3. When done, press F10 (or Fn+F10) to save and exit then observe if you can now press F1-F12 without pressing the Fn Key inside Windows.
Let me know how it goes.

  • Buttons without pressed down colour

In currently working on a program for which I need buttons without decorations. I succeed in removing most of the effects: the borders, the 3D-effects are replaced by colours etc. The only problem that is left is the fact that when I press the button it changes colour. I've been searching for a way to do so, but I didn't find a way to solve the problem:
The button still needs a background colour, so that means I can't just make it transparant, and I can't do it using look and feel because that seems to change ALL of the buttons (and I also use some normal ones apart from the 'stripped' buttons).
Is there a way to change the down state of a JButton without having to truly make a new object that extends the AbstractButton? And if there really is no other way, could someone point me in te right direction on how to make such an extention? (I know how to make extended objects etc, but I'm quite new to using Swing etc and haven't found how to make such things)
    Greetings,

Sorry BaltimoreJohn, I completely missed your post!
Yes, as you said, b JLabel is probably the answer. But don't implement mouseClicked() - you should actually use the other four methods of MouseListener to handle button presses. Reason being that mouseClicked() will only work if the cursor is perfectly stationary in between the press and release.

  • Want to reinstall my MacBook Pro (Can't press "Delete" in Disk Utility)

I want to delete my whole MacBook Pro, because I am giving it away. I have already pressed "Delete available space", but I've read on the support page that I have to press the "Delete" button to make the whole MacBook "brand new" in Disk Utility. This is not possible, since the button is grey. I've already spent a couple of days trying to figure this out. It also says that I have to restart my computer, and when the grey screen appears I have to hold Cmd and R, but when I do, nothing happens. Hope someone can help me out.

The button is greyed out because the same disk has the OS that you booted the machine from and deleting a running OS disk does not work because of already open files, etc.
As Niel says, use the Original OS disk or one of the following methods.
Command-R works if either you have a Recovery HD on your HD, or your computer is capable of net boot (aka Internet Recovery). If you do not have a wired/wireless connection and your Recovery HD is damaged for any reason, Command-R will also not work.
Another option is build a Recovery HD on a USB 2.0 Flash drive and boot your machine using it. You may need to power cycle and hold the ALT key to be allowed to boot from the USB.
Once you have booted by any of the above methods which does not involve the internal disk, you should be able to run Disk Utility and erase your internal disk.

  • E93z: ability to use function keys without pressing FN key first

    Hello,
I use apps that require the use of the F7 and F8 keys in order to clear or populate the screen. It is difficult to press the FN key first since it is also on the right side of the keyboard. Does anyone have a solution for this?
    Thank You!

Never mind I found the solution to this problem.

  • IPhone 3G headset function button schematic

Hey all. I am trying to figure a couple of things out in regards to the function button as on the standard iPhone headset.
I have a motorcycle, and an older Autocom system (a helmet radio / voice switcher / etc), and am trying to integrate my iPhone. To do so, I need to make a male-male 3.5mm 4-pole TRRS cable, as nobody really seems to make one anywhere that I've been able to find. I've seen the various pin-outs for the wires if one wanted to simply go from connector A to connector B, but I am trying to find out how to wire in a function button (this way I can reject a call, pause playback, skip tracks, etc, without having to actually look at or touch the phone while I'm riding).
I have found several pretty useful diagrams, the best of which is at this link:
    http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=276870
The overall schematic of what I need to do here (as near as I can tell) is as follows:
Tip (right speaker) --> Tip (right speaker)
    Ring1 (left speaker) --> Ring1 (left speaker)
    Ring2 (ground) --> Sleeve (microphone)
    Sleeve (microphone --> Ring2 (microphone)
Supposedly one should be able to wire in a momentary switch, on the Ring2 and Sleeve wires. When this switch is activated, is how the phone interprets the function button being pressed, and does whatever it is the phone is programmed to do when that happens.
What I am trying to figure out, basically, is how this switch works: a typical momentary switch is in either an always-open or always-closed state, and the switch action occurs when the circuit is either closed (as in an always-open switch) or opened (as in an always-closed switch). Push a button, switch is activated. Let go of the button, it returns to its normal default state.
That would, however, imply that either Ring2 (ground, on the iPhone side), or Sleeve (the microphone, on the iPhone side) is either always disconnected, and the phone recognizes a function-button action when that circuit is completed momentarily; or, that the phone interprets a headset-function-button-push when that connection is interrupted. It could also be that the connections should be switched (Ring2 -> Ring2, Sleeve -> Sleeve) in order for that to happen. I really don't know.
Does anybody here have any insight? In a nutshell, what I am trying to find out is how the iPhone recognizes that the function button on the headset has been pushed.
    Thanks very much, all!
    Dan

Nevermind, actually, I just answered my own question, sorry everyone.
If anyone is curious, shorting out the microphone signal to the ground is what activates the function button.
    Doh!

  • Macbook Shortcut buttons not working

I don't know what happened today, but my shortcut buttons (F1 - F4) that usually control the screen brightness and volume stopped working - pressing them by themselves won't change the volume, but if I hold down the function button and press the buttons though, then I can still change the brightness and volume. Does anyone know how to change it back to the buttons work without having to hold down function?

Go into system preferences, go to keyboard and mouse, under the keyboard section, make sure to un-check the box to use Fn keys for shortcuts.

i want to turn my macbook air off. the shut down button already appeared but the mouse/cursor just hang and won't work. even after pressing the enter button to shut my mac off won't work. what will i do?

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
    Firefox 18.4%
    Activity Monitor 0.9%
    Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

I got a 320GB sata 2.5" hard drive and installed it myself, its easy. I also got a caddy so I can use my old 120GB drive as a back up. Make sure u have everything backed up! Seagate and western digital drives are most popular. I asked similar q and got this answer"
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
If your backup is bootable, then boot from the external drive and use SuperDuper to clone it back to the newly installed drive.

  • Position  change of function buttons in Layout sheet

    Hi Experts,
In my planning layout, the planning function buttons like copy and delete push buttons are close to each other. So if i want to arrange them logically related close to each other, how i can do that ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
This is in BI WAD template I assume? If you are looking for rearraging multiple buttons you have created using Button Group Item, you can do that in the properties of the button group item (arrows to move button up and down). The buttons in one button group item always appear close by to each other so if you are looking at more space or arranging them on the page, use multiple button group items and arrange them using container layout item(s).

  • Hi, i want to restore my macbook pro.. help

i want to restore my macbook without losing my important data. how it can be done ?

It can't be done. If you want to restore that means you must erase everything then reinstall OS X cleanly. You must have a current backup to prevent loss of important files.
You can do a reinstall of OS X without erasing the drive, but this is not a factory restore as it is normally called:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following
procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select ReinstallLion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from
the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.
If you are running Snow Leopard or earlier, then you cannot do the above. You will need the original OS X installer disc that came with your computer:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
