  • I am unable in February 2011 eliminating Bing as my default search engine

I have tried the previously posted methods of removing Bing as my default search engine (multiple tries) to no avail. Had been able to remove it from my laptop in other posted techniques. Just can't get rid of it on my PC. I am using the XP Pro OS on a HP workstation running MS Small Office 2007 Office suite. Have considered going to Chrome but would dearly miss my Firefox.

  • "Bing" has become default search engin, want "Google" back, how 2 do it.

I have "google" as my default search engine in IE preferences, USED to be in firefox also, a few days ago, "bing" shows up as search engine. I cannot find "bing" under ANY program stuff anywhere to remove it. What happened, and how do I get "google" back? Even if I type in "google" in the location bar & hit "enter' it switches back to "bing."

    1)enter " about:config " in mozilla address bar
2)type "babylon" or "bing" in search box
3)reset all the search results (right-click on the result)
    4)type "keyword.url" in search box
    5)right click on the keyword.url - modify
6)copy &paste "http://www.google.com/search?hl=en-GB&q= " for google as default search engine

  • No default search engines

I installed freeware that hijacked my search. It removed all of the default search engines and left only bing which was then set to my default. I managed to get bing off the list and added google so I can search. It is not my preferred search tool. I cannot find my preferred search, yahoo, as an add-on. The restore search engines tool is grayed out. I tried a reset add-ons to no avail. I am using Windows 7. Do I need to reinstall firefox?

The default search engines are supplied as a part of Firefox, so the easiest way is to reinstall. (Other ways such as trying to download them separately would be kind of challenging.) Here's how I suggest doing it:
    '''Clean Reinstall'''
We use this name, but it's not about removing your data/settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean. As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.
    (1) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 36.0.4 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)
    (2) Exit out of Firefox.
    (3) Rename the program folder
    ''(64-bit Windows folder names)''
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox
    ''(32-bit Windows folder names)''
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    to
    C:\Program Files\OldFirefox
    (4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.
    Any improvement?
Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:
    * \OldFirefox\Plugins
    * \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

  • I want google as my search engine, not Bing. How do I make Google the default search engine in the "Search the Web" feature of the search bar; or, how do I remove the "Search the Web" feature of the search bar so that "Google" can be default?

I want google as my search engine, not Bing. But no matter what I do in "Manage Search Engines," Firefox seems to reset to "Search the Web," which uses Bing.
How do I make Google the default search engine in the "Search the Web" feature of the search bar; or, how do I remove the "Search the Web" feature of the search bar so that "Google" can be default? When I move "Search the Web" down and "Google" up, the search bar resets every time Firefox reloads.

Sometime Bing is not located in the Add/Remove programs section of the control panel.
6 Easy Steps to Remove Bing from Mozilla Firefox:
    1. Click on the "inverted triangle" located to the right of the orange Bing icon.
    2. Select the option "Manage Search Engines...". (A pop-up window will appear titled "Manage Search Engine List.)
    3. Select "Bing".
    4. Click the "Remove" button.
    5. Select the desired search engine from the list.
    6. Click "OK"
    All Done.... :-)
    Happy Searching...

  • Remove Bing as default search engine in Safari

Suddenly my Safari default search engine (in the URL bar) has switched to Bing. I changed it back to Google in preferences (on the Safari menu) and although the URL bar says "Search Google or enter address", it still defaults to Bing. Please help.

Hi there I\'m an Apple user,
You may find the information in the article below helpful.
Safari 6 (OS X Mountain Lion): Search the web
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11847
If you want to choose a different search engine, click the magnifying glass at the left end of the field, and then choose the search engine you want.
You can also change the search engine in the General pane of Safari preferences.
Search engine availability varies according to the region set in the Region pane of Language & Text preferences.

  • How can I stop Firefox from changing my default search engine to Yahoo when I want it to be Bing?

I keep changing my default search engine to Bing but it keeps changing back to Yahoo. HOW CAN I STOP THIS?!?!

    Bookmark and use this;
    Download the '''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/ Mozilla Search Reset]''' {web link}
This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up
and then resets your search preferences and home page
to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This
affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

  • Why is Bing my default search engine?

My default search engine changed to Bing yesterday and I CAN'T get rid of it, it's driving me mental. I've tried changing preferences but it doesn't work. I've also read about uninstalling Geneio but I don't think I have that? It may be soemthing to do with installing a Paint software on my MAC as it seemed to happen after that! Please Help!

Note that this is sufficient for some adware, but not for all. InstallMac/Genieo, for example, may install an extension called Omnibar, but that is the smallest part of the infection. There are many other things installed, some very deeply in your Mac, that must be removed if you don't want this junk remaining active, doing God knows what in the background.
Also, note that the InstallMac/Genieo uninstaller is known not to work. These installers do not remove all components of the adware. In fact, the InstallMac uninstaller in particular has been observed to install components that were not actually present!
Use the tool that Kevin recommended to get rid of everything.

    Hey ravenbird1,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to use a specific search engine.

To set the default search engine, choose Safari > Preferences, then click General.
If you are having problems with extensions you can uninstall and reinstall the extension.

  • How to replace Bing and get Google back as my default search engine? I have already changed it in preferences and disabled extensions.  Nothing is working!!

How to replace Bing and get Google back as my default search engine? I have already changed it in preferences and disabled extensions.  Nothing is working!!

You installed the "Genieo" spyware/adware. There is an uninstaller, but as the developer is not trustworthy, you shouldn't rely on it. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Applications/Genieo.app
Right-click or control-click the line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Applications/Uninstall Genieo.app
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib
Note: Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file doesn't exist.
The following configuration file is either created or modified by the Genieo installer:
    /etc/launchd.conf
The file is unlikely to be used by anything but Genieo or something equally undesirable. Unless you know you need it, delete it in the same way as above. Otherwise, edit it to remove the line that begins as follows:
    setenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
The above is not a file, but a line inside a file.
Reboot. Safari should now launch without crashing. If not, stop here and post your results.
From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extension you don't recognize. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
The Genieo installer may also install the "Silverlight" web plugin from Microsoft. If you have no use for that plugin, you should remove it according to Microsoft's instructions. Don't remove it if you subscribe to "Netflix."
This procedure may leave a few files behind, but it should render Genieo permanently non-functional, as long as you never reinstall it.

I lost a lot of trust in Skype when they recently published an update and had the installer try to trick me into making Bing my default search engine and MSN my default home page.
These kinds of "viral payloads" do more harm than good because:
    1)  They feel like cheap tricks and erode at our trust in the company and product.
    2)  They make the payload in question seem pathetic. How good can Bing and MSN be if Microsoft has to trick people into using them? It's like parents trying to pay other children to be their child's friend.
    3)  They are predatory practices that prey on people who aren't technologically savy enough to change the settings -- and who just assume that the checked boxes need to be checked.
    4)  People feel tricked and betrayed.
Come on Microsoft... Is it really work it?

Hi, Basiclife, and welcome to the Community,
Not all of my responses are stellar.
Discretion being the better part of valour, I will refrain from listing the software suites I use that try to "trick" me into adding yet another free trial of yet another anti-virus software package or browser toolbar ... ahhh, the "fine print" ...

I have to agree. I decided not to update to the latest version of Skype because again it tried to make MSN my default homepage and Bing my default search engine. Maybe I want to make those changes, maybe I don't, but I do NOT want them forced on me in order to update Skype! No, there are no checkboxes or other ways to decline those changes. Unchecky usually prevents this kind of install, but it doesn't seem to work with Skype. I just closed Unchecky and tried the Skype update again. Same thing. No way to decline the change in homepage or in default search engine. I know I can change things back after installing Skype, but why should I have to? This is similar to Microsoft Update telling me that the Bing Bar and the Bing Desktop are "important" updates. In my not-so-humble opinion, MS is taking lessons from the folks over at Ask. I neither want nor need a toolbar, nor do I want/need the desktop app. Now if they called it an *optional* update, I'd have no problem. Optional, yes. Important, no. I will no longer allow automatic updates.
