I want to save streaming video to watch later, wma format, whatever
format is most common on the internet. Quick Time does not
open automatically when the streaming video starts but Windows Media
Player opens. What program is low cost that will save the video
stream that Quick Time Player or Windows Media Player can open?As I see it, you basically have 3 main options:
1) Screen Capture -- Any streaming video that can be watched/listened to can be captured. Several applications are available that can do this but I generally prefer SnapzProX. This class of program essentially allows you to "record" the audio and video as it is being played back on your computer. This is normally done using a very simple but very fast codecs which create rather large files on your computer but which can then be transcoded to a more efficient format for playback whenever you wish.
ADVANTAGES: You end up with a fully self-contained copy of the media which can be locally archived, moved, copied, and is available as long as you keep the copy.
DISADVANTAGES: This approach can require large amounts of storage space depending on the commpression format used and the number of files stored. Depending on the material involved, this could constitute a copyright violation of media use.
2) Save As... -- If you have/purchase QT Pro and/or an appropriate third-party QT component (like Flip4Mac in this case), you open open/play the streaming file in the QT Pro Player and save a copy of the movie that contains a resource pointer to the online streaming server. For all intents, you have a "copy" of the file stored on your computer that can, within certain limits, be played back whenever you wish.
ADVANTAGES: Since the saved movies are very small, you can save a large number of them on your computer. Since they open and play just like standalone movies, they are very easy to use and share. Since control of the content remains with the orginator and access (public or limited) remains as intended by the originator, you would not be violating copyrights here.
DISADVANTAGES: Material may be changed, removed, or unavailable for one reason or another at any given time. Playback requires connection to the Internet.
3) Bookmark/URL List -- As a last resort, you can always bookmark or copy the relavent streaming server URL to a "hyperlink" list and open the media manually whenever you wish/are able to do so.
ADVANTAGES: Nothing to buy.
DISADVANTAGES: Requires extra effort on your part, still won't open in the QT Player, and still remains subject to the online vagaries mentioned above.

  • Need to save streaming video - what to do?

My apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I didn't know where to go...
There is a 30-second streaming video clip on the web that I would like to save/download for a legal promotional personal use.
Is there any macintosh software I can use to "grab" this file? I've read the source page as best I can, but it always leads to a non-linkable windows media file
Fast help would be appreciated. The file will only be only for a week.

    Hi, J.
Snapz Pro X 2 with Movies will allow you to capture the video off the screen as it is played back. Not cheap: US$69 but it works superbly and is well-documented.
You can investigate other solutions by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.

  • I want to record streaming video

I want to record some streaming video from the Olympics. The sailing events were streamed live and are still available for viewing from some server through the NBC site. I can't figure how to do it.
    Anyone know?

I have Toast Titanium 11 and I've never actually gotten the "capture web video" to work. Now I haven't done any extensive reserach on the matter as it's something I've only tried twice and have researched the manual, too - when I select Web Video the progress wheel just turns and turns. Would sure like to know if others have gotten this to work - I'd be interested.

  • Want to save my video opening credits and keep reusing

I make do it yourself videos and I have created a great stop action 22 second intro to my videos. How can I save it, and keep resuing it on each project I create? I am sure the answer is easy, but it alludes me!
    Denise

I would suggest that you do it this way:
Go to the Project Library View.
Select your project that contains your opening.
Click FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT in the top menu.
Give the duplicate a name, like "Opening Template".
Delete everything that is not in the opening from this "Opening Template" project.
When you get ready to make a new project, make a duplicate of this template and give it the name of your new project, and build your project from there.

  • How do I capture streaming video on firefox for mac?

Is there a way to save or capture streaming video being watched on Firefox for Mac?

it's possible. i did it myself, after a few tryouts.
i still can't get the best result, but i got something.
first of all you have to save the streaming file(thru the save as qt movie, from CTRL-click). when you get a stream it gets cached on your computer. you might playback it even when offline. so if all that you need is a simple playback, that's ok. but it's a cache, sometime the system will erase it from your HD.
if you want to keep it as a qt file(or any other format) thats this is the deal. when you save the stream file, it saves a reference file(4kb) that reads the cache. you cannot recover them from the cache, not even by changing the termination, because the qt player won't recognize the .qtch files transformed into .mov.
open the file(reference you saved before), choose export from the file menu, and choose the setting that you want. i still don't get a good quality(i know it's incredible that a stream file has a better quality...) and i still have to export the video separated from the audio. but if you need only the moving image to edit a homevideo, and your only source is a stream, it's a start.
so if anyone feel like growing the knowledge tree, let's go ahead.

  • VLC doesn't save streaming audio to mp3 anymore

I want to save streaming audio from the internet to my HDD in mp3 format while listening to it at the same time.  That worked fine when I did it with VLC, using the GUI.  To be specific, here are the settings that I used:
VLC main menu: File>Open Network Stream>Open...Network>tick HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS and enter the URL (http://vruk.sc.llnwd.net:12265) >under Advanced Options tick Stream/Save and click on Settings (opens Stream Output window)>Outputs, tick Play locally, tick File, click on Browse and enter filename and location for the stream saving file, i.e. /home/robert/vlcout.mp3>Encapsulation method, tick on Raw>Transcoding options, tick on Audio codec and select mp3>Bitrate 128 kb/s, Channels 2>OK, OK, to start recording. Stop or Quit VLC, to stop recording.
Two days ago I upgraded VLC from v.0.8.5-9 to v.0.8.6a-4 (which also upgraded ffmpeg from v.20060920-1 to v.20070131-1), and now the above procedure isn't working anymore.  The stream isn't playing anymore over my speakers while the encoding supposedly is going on, the vlcout.mp3 file is empty (0B), and VCL gives me the following error messages:
stream_out_transcode error: cannot find encoder ((null))
stream_out_transcode error: cannot create audio chain
main error: cannot create packetizer output (mpga)
It looks as though VLC is failing to encode the stream to mp3.  The VLC documentation (see http://www.videolan.org/streaming-features.html) in a table of "possible output formats for the transcoding module" says that for mp3 audio "you have to compile ffmpeg with libmp3lame support."  Has the new ffmpeg v.20070131-1 (in extra) been compiled without mp3 support?  If so, why?  Apparently, the older version I was using last week supported mp3.
libmp3lame is installed on my system.  There is a very recent alternative ffmpeg-svn-8218-1 pkgbuild in AUR that enables libmp3lame in the configure section of the build but when I try to install the package built that way it conflicts with ffmpeg v.20070131-1, and to remove the official ffmpeg v.20070131-1 I'd first have to remove a slew of other packages that depend on it.
Is it possible to remove VLC v.0.8.6a-4 and ffmpeg v.20070131-1 and go back to the older versions that worked for me?  There was talk of a bug in ffmpeg in this forum at the end of January; what about it?
    What should I do?

I solved the problem for now by downgrading both vlc and ffmpeg to the earlier versions that I was using before.  Saving an audio stream in mp3 format is working again now.
I believe there are problems with the current versions of both vlc and ffmpeg.
    1. vlc 0.8.6a doesn't seem to have ffmpeg enabled, i.e.
$ vlc --list | grep ffmpeg
    VLC media player 0.8.6a Janus
whereas with the older version I get
$ vlc --list | grep ffmpeg
    VLC media player 0.8.5 Janus
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg audio/video decoder/encoder ((MS)MPEG4,SVQ1,H263,WMV,WMA)
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg chroma conversion
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg audio/video encoder
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg demuxer
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg video filter
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg crop padd filter
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg deinterlace video filter
    2. The current package ffmpeg v.20070131-1 in extra may not refer to various libraries correctly in its configure parameters.  E.g. in AUR there is an alternative pkgbuild ffmpeg-svn 8218-1 from 04-Mar-2007 in which the original configure parameters were replaced as follows:
    --enable-mp3lame --> --enable-libmp3lame
    --enable-vorbis --> --enable-libvorbis
    --enable-faac --> --enable-libfaac
    --enable-faad --> --enable-libfaad
    --enable-a52 --> --enable-liba52
    --enable-dts --> --enable-libdts
Has the ffmpeg package in extra been compiled with mp3 support which is needed for the transcoding module of vlc to encode in mp3 format?  The alternative ffmpeg package in AUR conflicts with the ffmpeg package from extra, and I don't know how to tell the new vlc to use the alternative package instead of the one from extra.
Someone ought to look into this.
    Robert

  • Streaming Video from my iMac to my TV

I am new to this and would really appreciate some help. I just bought an HD video camera (Sony CX-12) and want to save the video (AVCHD format) to my Mac. My challenge is, once saved, how to get it to play on my TV (in another room). I also have time capsule. I know I can use Apple TV, but that won't give me the HD quality. I have also heard PS3 would work well. Because I am not that technologically savvy, any solution would have to be relatively simple. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, your answers help in narrowing down the range of options.
As for wireless solutions, there are several to choose from.
    Hardware:
I'm not familiar with the PS3, but if it has a wireless card in it that allows wireless access to the machine, that would indeed be a way to go. Check the software that comes w/the PS3 to see if it's compatible w/Lepoard or Tiger (check your OSX version -if it's 10.5.x it's Lepoard, if 10.4.x it's Tiger)
Other options include the AppleTV and other devices. Check this link for a list of other devices (under the forum heading "General Discussion about UPNP/DNLA and other TV connected devices".
    Software:
To manage the files you'll need a media manager. Each device above will have their own in-house software which may or may not suit your setup. I have a Phillips Media Manager SL300i and instead of using the Phillips software, I use TwonkyVision. TwonkyVision is one of a number of third-party media manager programs that will work with a variety of devices. Once installed on your computer, you can sit in front of the TV and play the file you want from the GUI displayed on the TV from the attached device that connects to your computer wirelessly and away you go!
Here are a few links to get you started:

  • Getting streaming video set up in Dreamweaver CS4

I want to use streaming videos instead of progressive download.
How is this done with Dreamweaver CS4?
When I click on the Insert media>FLV it brings up a dialogue box which allows you to choose from Progressive Download or Streaming.
If I choose streaming, I'm presented with a Server URI box prefixed by rtmp://
I don't have a specific Adobe Flash Streaming portal, but I'd set up the MIME type for flash streaming with my internet provider (1&1) a couple of years ago, and I've used streaming video lots of times without problem (had put that together in Flash, though, not Dreamweaver).
so if my site is:  http://www.mySite.com
    and my video is myVid.flv,
what do I put for Server URI and what do I put for Stream name?
    Thanks for any assistance.

    Hi
but I'd set up the MIME type for flash streaming with my internet
provider (1&1) a couple of years ago
Streaming video cannot be set-up as a MIME type, as it requires a streaming server. Setting the MIME file extension to recognize any of the video/audio files does just this, (it recognizes the file type) but delivers them as progressive not streaming.

  • Storing streaming video in OrdVideo

    Hi,
I have looked through the documentation and some examples, but am still wondering whether the URL used for a HTTP data source has to have a file name in it or it can be just a URL with no file name (a true video streaming server).
Also, if a streaming URL can be used, how does Oracle know when to stop streaming? i.e I may only want to store streamed video for 5 minutes, or 10 minutes etc.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Cheers,
    MH

I have placed a SWF in my base PDF document and packaged it as an ebook. Video does not play. I do have the poster image of the video visible but I am not able to start the video. There is no active area on the video for me to do anything. Is there any document I have missed that explains how to embed a video into an ebook?
There are a number of different opotions in flash to generate a SWF file for imported video such as:
    - Loading a video with playback component
    - Embedding a FLV in SWF and play in timeline
None of these options work for me.
If anybody has been successful at this, please let me know the procedure. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • 'tail' streaming video

    Hi,
I use conky to 'tail' the process status and the logs on my desktop for easy reference. Is it also possible to 'tail' streaming video on the desktop?
What I'd like to figure out is to have a small video continuously playing on the desktop, without interfering with the normal window manager functionality (in my case fluxbox).
    Is this somehow possible?

I re-open this post, because I want to have streaming video on the desktop, and so far I only managed to put normal videos on the desktop.
For a livestream, for instance the al-Jazeera livestream, I use the following command (and it works properly):
    rtmpdump -v -r "rtmp://aljazeeraflashlivefs.fplive.net/aljazeeraflashlive-live/aljazeera_eng_med" | mplayer -
Combined with the shantz-xwinwrap, I try to put the livestream on the desktop:
    xwinwrap -g 640x360+100+100 -ov -ni -s -st -sp -b -nf -- rtmpdump -v -r "rtmp://aljazeeraflashlivefs.fplive.net/aljazeeraflashlive-live/aljazeera_eng_med" | mplayer -
The result isn't what is expected, as you can see on the screenshot below. Basically xwinwrap creates the section of the screen to display the stream, but it won't display the stream. Instead, the stream appears somewhere else, in another mplayer window.
    screenshot
I also tried to reverse the command, but that had the same effect:
    rtmpdump -v -r "rtmp://aljazeeraflashlivefs.fplive.net/aljazeeraflashlive-live/aljazeera_eng_med" | xwinwrap -g 640x360+100+100 -ov -ni -s -st -sp -b -nf -- mplayer -
Any ideas how to fix this?
