I want to set up security for my linksys network.  I followed the directions outlined on the linksys web site.  I get through the process, create a password (key) and I save the settings.   When I try to log on from my laptop, I am asked for a password, however when I type the password in, the statement says "invalid number of caracters.  How do I get the password process to work so that I am able to secure my network.  Also, without security, can someone break into my laptop and corrupt my files.

With WEP, you must enter WEP "key 1"  (found in the router)  into your computer, not the WEP password or passphase.
However, you should be using WPA2, or at least WPA, and a strong password.
If you use an unsecured wireless router, anyone within range can login and use your Internet connection. At a minumum, this means that they will be using your bandwidth. At worst, they could be uploading copyrighted music, sending spam email, distributing viruses, or downloading child pornography --- all from an account with your name on it!   Additionally, once someone is on your wireless network, they are in a very convenient spot to start attacking your computer.  They  have immediate access to all your shared files, and they could corrupt, steal, or delete them.  With some work, they could likely get to your other files also.  So my advice is --- secure your wireless network.
To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Next, leave the router at its default settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.
To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.
Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal" and "enterprise". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password" ).
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.
Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password, should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, or passphrase must not have any spaces in it.
Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=917021 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

  • I want to set password security on a pdf from the command line

I have a pdf file that is created and placed on a report server.  I would like to run a batch cmd to set the security for that pdf based on a saved security policy.  I will call the batch cmd file from a batch application.  Can Acrobat XI handle this operation or do I need a third party tool.  The pdf is created by BI Publisher (Peoplesoft).
    Thanks,
    Jay

You need to invoke your cmd manually, don't you? So, instead of opening the Terminal application, enter the command and press "Enter" you open Acrobat and click a button. It's a different manual step to start the process, but you need a manual step to start the process anyway. I do realize that you may have a bash/perl/python script that does more than just apply encryption but that's the capability that Acrobat has.
Regretfully, Acrobat JavaScript API does not provide functionality to encrypt with password. You can use JS to encrypt with certificates but [for unknown to me reason] not with passwords. Otherwise it could've written a JS script that encrypts, embed this JS in a separate PDF, open that PDF from a command line with your JS script executing on Open and have this LS script do all the work you need. Well, you can do that for certificate encryption but not for password encryption. I don't know why. And you cannot invoke an action from  a JS either. Oh, well...

  • I want to set the alarm for weekdays/weekend

I want to set the alarm for weekdays/weekend how I can do that on my iphone 3Gs, I Google as well but unable to find and way to do this. I do not want to set the alarm every day. It really very hard that I set it every time.
If any know any other application that I can have for alarm. iphone built-in alarm system is carp.

Yes, but he doesn't say why it is, unsuitable, for his needs. From what he says, it is perfect for his needs - you can set it for just one day, or any subset of weekdays, you can set it once, or repeat any number of times, or indefinately, it does not have to be the active app to work, and it is free and already included on the iPhone.
Simply set a weekday alarm, set it to repeat M/T/W/T/F, set a weekend alarm to repeat every S/S, and that's it - unless I'm completely misreading the first part of the post.
Given what was posted as desired for the app's function, simple saying the built in clock's alarm is "carp" really doesn't add anything, since by all accounts it does actually do everything that the first part of the post wants.
Unless he wants an alarm function that automagically somehow knows which days to chime and which days to not?

How do I set up security on my linksys router after the install of a net gear wireless pc adapter?

Setting up your wireless connection in your router.
1.Open Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.
2.You will now get a sign-in box, User Name = (Leave Blank)
Password = admin (all lower case letters)
3.Once the set-up page opens, click on the Wireless Tab as youwill need to change the settings. A) Wireless Network Mode = Mixed
                  B) Wireless Network Name (SSID) = Choose any name and do not use Linksys.
                  C) Wireless Channel = 1, 6 or 11 is best, so see which work best for you.
                  D) Wireless SSID Broadcast = Enabled.
    4. Now go to the bottom of the page and click on save settings.
    5. Click on the Wireless Security Sub tab.
                  A) Security Mode: WPA
                  B) WPA Algorithms: TKIP + AES
                  C) WPA Shared Key:  Type 24 letters, and numbers using lower and upper case letters
                  D) Group Key Renewal: 3600
    6. Once again go to the bottom of the page and click on Save Settings.
    7. Now you can close out of this page.
    8. You will now need to enter the security info into your computer. I will now give you 2 links, depending which operating system you have, Vista or XP you will follow the one you have.
    Vista = http://www.home-network-help.com/wireless-adapter-configuration-in-vista.html
    XP = http://www.home-network-help.com/wireless-adapter.html
Now try to make a wireless connection.

  • Want to set Min Max for a material for PD MRP type

    Hi,
I know Maximum stock level field in Material master MRP 2 view ? but where do i maintain minimum stock level? not procured?
My client wants to set up his inventory with Min Max levels using MRP PD?
    Thanks and Apprecaites help.
    Regards,
    Siva

    Hi,
If you want to maintain a Max and Min stock level, Maximum stock is shown straight away, you cannot find the Minimum field directly.
if you want to use MRP type PD then go for safety stock that will be your minimum stock level
or else use Re-order point planning, re-order point will be your minimum and Max-level as maximum.
    Thanks

  • Want to set-up iPhone for friend

Hi - Am a happy user of (factory unlocked - NO JB or Unlock otherwise) iPhone-4 and Mac13"; want to set-up a newly-bought iPh-4 for a family member, using a PC; this 2nd phone comes with a specifc provider SIM-lock: the phone -company provides an exchange micro-SIM ( to replace the new owner's old one, but inactivates the old one, once the new comes to life, eg during iPhone - activation). All the set-up of an iTunes profile and APPLE-ID for the new to-be user are already done and are up.
Here the Q´s: 1/ Is there a way ( as it should be a surprise present) to ACTIVATE the new SIM-locked iPhone WITHOUT sim-card OR alternatively, can I use my OWN working SIM , just for the process of someone's else's activation, then to configure for the recipient some Apps, just to make it a nice, pre-arranged present.-- 2/ Is one sure that my own SIM ( once used in a foreign iPhone) does not get corrupted or writes some other IMEI or hardware info into my user profile, once it is then subsequently changed back into its "home"-iPhone, ie the one I use ? - 3/ So, the issue here is: Can the new iPhone be activated with ANY running, previously used (ie. in another iPhone) SIM, just for the config procedure; How to be confident as well for the new user, as for myself that all stay out of trouble ? -- PS: maybe sounds complicated, but all efforts just to keep the little project as a nice present and surprise

sorry but its a blackberry so no micro-sim, and we r leaving right after christmas. alright will this work? I have already upgraded it to ios 5.0.1. right now it says restore completed in the iphone and click next to continue. could i disconnect it now, plug it into his computer when hes not home, and start it as a new iphone from there? will the contacts still be there? i only set it up as a new one on mine like i said so all it did was a backup. Will that work?

  • Setting iOS DNS for All WiFi Networks

This article describes how to set the DNS for WiFi connections on iOS:
    http://techinch.com/blog/change-your-dns-settings-on-iphone-ipod-touch-and-ipad
The problem is that it specifies DNS for an individual network
    connection, not for all connections.
Does anyone know a way to change iOS DNS for all WiFi networks in one
    fell swoop?

I have my ios devices DNS set via DHCP
You'd have to move to an MDM solution if you want over the air, push profile configuration setting to the devices
such as osx server Profie Manager. You may be able to do it with custom settings, I haven't tried it myself
The basic wifi setting in OSX server PM only allow settings for wifi SSID password etc
no DNS settings ip address etc. alternative MDM solutions may give you more options

  • Can't set up security for Airport Express?

Hello, we are tearing our hair out trying to set up Airport Express.
We have installed and are using the Airport Utility. We plug in the AX and it is a slow flash amber. It s being registered by our mac so we join the default "Apple Network XXX" then open Airport Utility. Checking the base station status it lists 4 items that need attention, we can work thru all of them but keep getting stuck on "Wireless Security".
We get to the point where it says select "WPA2" or "no security", we select WPA2, hit continue it then gives us the message "wireless network name is required to continue" but there is no where to select a name or enter one, the base station is also selected in the LH panel? We can't get past this point.
We have also previously in other screens already put in a password for the base station and again for the airport express - is this a 3rd password?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks! - Danielle

Danielle, welcome to the discussion area!
Try the following: Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab just below the row of icons to assign a name to your device, a device password (write that down) and adjust time settings as needed.
Click the Wireless tab and work your way down the page
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
wireless Network Name = Your choice
Check mark next to "Allow to be extended"
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) is a good choice
    Radio Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = backspace to clear out anything here and re-enter your desired password
Confirm Password = Same as above
Click Update to save your settings. See if that will help.

  • Setting Up Security For A NETGEAR DG834G Wireless Router?

During the past week I have connected both my Macs to my new Netgear router with Ethernet cables.
My son, in another part of the house, connects wirelessly. It took a few hours (off and on) to connect his Windows Laptop to the internet and finally get his email working.
When we initially set it up, the router was broadcasting its name to the world.
I have now switched off the broadcasting of the name.
What level of security is this?
Are my 2 wired-in computers fairly safe?
I believe that his transmissions could be picked up, but as he has no financial or sensitive material I don't think that would be too serious - or would it?
We live in a quiet cul-de-sac where any strange people or cars would be noticed immediately, so we are probably not so vulnerable to wireless-hackers as others might be. Or am I living in a "fool's paradise"?
The Netgear has details of numerous security systems that can be enabled, but as with most computer instructions they are written for experts saying WHAT it can do and not for beginners saying HOW to do it?
Does anyone know where I might be able to get hold of some reasonably simple, step by step instructions.
I am hesitant to go ahead on my own as I am worried that I might mess-up the internet connection I have struggled so hard to achieve!
    Ian.

    Ian,
As a general statement, wireless networks are inherently insecure.
"I have now switched off the broadcasting of the name.
What level of security is this?
If this is all you have done, roughly speaking, your network is just as
(in)secure as it was when you plugged in the router.
Do you have file or printer sharing turned on? Are your Mac firewalls
stealthed and refusing UDP packets? Will the router accept any inbound
request for an internet connection? Have you changed the default password
    on the router?
The answers to these questions speak to the relative (in)security of your
    Macs.
Is your son using any form of encryption, say, WEP, or, preferably, WPA?
If not, your network is less secure.
"We live in a quiet cul-de-sac where any strange people or cars would be noticed immediately, so we are probably not so vulnerable to wireless-hackers as others might be. Or am I living in a "fool's paradise"?"
    Yes, and here's why.
"Does anyone know where I might be able to get hold of some reasonably simple, step by step instructions."
I was going to suggest reading the router's manual, but it is pure and utter
fertilizer. Looks as though a marketroid (who knows some buzzwords but
not their meanings) patched that monstrosity together using the user
menu storyboard walk-through and a lot buzzword-laden filler "lifted"
    from the Web.
Would it be humanly possible to run an ethernet cable from your router to
where your son computes and turn off the wireless?
Since I don't own one, I can't help with a primer on securing it. Sorry.
    -Wayne

  • How to set wireless security for Officejet Pro L7750 printer?

    Hi there.
I connected Officejet Pro L7750 to wireless broadband router and all is well. Only problem is that all computers on the network can install the drivers and connect to the printer. How do I limit the printing capabilities only to 2 computers so the rest of the network won't be able to print to this printer?

Quite a few questions there, Sends, but I will do what I can to answer them.
I would first recommend buying a router, even if it is one that you won't connect to the internet and network this with your other PCs and the printer. This will give you the best functionality and results for what you are attempting to do.
Additionally, the Auto Off feature of the printer can be disabled, and is not affected by the connection type. You can usually go through the Setup Menu and select Tools to change the options there on the energy saving features.
Lastly, the auto off feature on your computer is a Windows question, but an easy one to answer. If you are on a laptop you can right-click on the battery in the service tray (bottom right hand corner) and change the energy conservation settings.
You might be better off installing the printer through the USB cord and alternating that based on when you are using it, but that would be optimal only if you are printing only a few documents on an irregular basis. A networked connection is the easiest to manage over several computers, honesty, but you do have some requirements for that connection and limitations as well.
I hope this information is useful!

Yeah, normally I click on "open network settings" click on "advanced" and then go to the 802.1x tab. Thats where the problem begins. I'm not to sure what to do from there. I've tried basically all the options available and still have had no luck. In the domain option, I have tried all three options, User, System, and Login Window, and I've put my user name and password, but when the computer tries to connect to the server it says I can't because of something to do with the certificate or something along those lines.
