I want to share address books between different users on same PC
Hi
We have a PC with two different Users but there is one email address shared between them. We have a copy of Thunderbird installed one each User and one User has multiple accounts for privacy reasons. It would be really helpful to have a shared addressbook in common to access addresses from. Is this possible?
Cheers, Marcus
Marcus,
Nothing really easy comes to mind, but here are two ideas to consider, depending on how frequently the address book changes:
1) If the shared email address happens to be gmail, then each user can install the gContactSync add-on and let Google have the master copy. This would give each of you frequent synchronizations to the same address book.
2) An easy, but not automatic approach would be for one user to be in charge of changes and periodically (daily, weekly, ...) export the address book to an ldif file. The other user then could import the address book to his/her TB account.

Share address book between different user accounts on same computer
my wife and i share one computer, but just started to use separate user accounts to keep our mail accounts separate. all our addresses are stored in the address book on my user account. is there a way to share that account with her so that she has access to all the addresses. this would be much easier that have 2 address books to keep updated.
i do have a .mac account and i have only activated one email address.thanks for your response andrew. i've tried that but address book asks for the .mac name of the person you want to share with. i don't have a family pack .mac subscription only a single one. so would setting up an email alias for my wife accomplish this? is there a way to do this bypassing .mac all together simply because we're using the same computer?

Is there a way to share iTunes music between different users on same computer?
Just bought a new iMac and want to share my library with my wife on same computer. We have separate user profiles on the computer, but don't want to have to import entire 200gb library twice onto the same machine. Is there a way to get her profile to see my music on the same computer?
Thanks for any help!Check out Terrence Devlin's replies (he posted two separate good ones) to this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3250415?start=0&tstart=0

HT3819 How do I share downloaded tracks between different users on same mac?
Hello. I bought my new Mac a couple of months ago. I set it up with three different users, one for myself as admin, one for my wife, and one for our daughter, all on the same Mac. My wife and I both have our own Itunes account. I spent a couple of days downloading almost all of our CDs into my Itunes library. Now, I want to know how my wife and daughter can access these songs in their libraries so that they can put tracks on their Ipods. So far, the only option that I have been able to see is the downloading of the CDs all over again into my wife's library. Wouldn't this just make duplicate tracks on the Hard Drive? If anyone can help, or point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.
Thank you.It works for "initial sharing" but the described solution includes some drawbacks;
- songs added under one account don't show "automatically" for other users
- if added there is a copy of the song-file (* 2.mp3)
- no "bulk" import withoud re-adding already present songs
Any workarounds for these problems known? 'caus I'm getting tired to keep the 3 iTune Libs of my girls in synch

Creating 2 address books for different users?
my wife and I don't want to login as separate users on the powerbook, but we do want to be able to import and synchronise our address books from our palm PDAs and keep the addresses separate. So far it seems that we would merge the addresses into the "all" group the first time we synch. Is there a way to set up 2 different users?
your help appreciated to keep my partner happy!!No there isn't.
In order to do so, you must create a login user account for your wife. She will have you own Home folder/directory which will include her Address Book contacts, email account or accounts in Mail, etc.
You can enable Fast User Switching which makes the process of switching between user accounts a fast and easy process. -
How do I share my Address Book with other users on same computer?
This continues to elude me. I tried Address Book sharing, syncing, etc. but they either didn't work or are way too slow. I just simply want to be able to use the same database for all users on the same computer. I'm really surprised that Apple doesn't offer this functionality.
I read one solution about creating a separate hard drive solution, selecting Ignore Permissions on it and moving the database to that and then setting up symbolic links for each user to point their Address Book database to that database. But this still seems like a major pain.
Is there not something more simple and reliable?

No. You don't have to use an external drive and can put it in a folder in /Users/Shared and set inherited ACLs to allow different users to read/write to it as outlined in this [post|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7245381]. You'll still need to erase original address book folders and put symbolic links to the shared folder if you do that. there is nothing simpler I'm afraid. -
How to share interactive reports between different users in apex.PLEASEHELP
Hi all,
How can we share the interactive reports in oracle apex within different users. Please help its really urgent..
Thanks
ManishHello,
I suggest you read the documentation and HOWTO's on Interactive Reports, since it is covered in there
http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/apex/apex31nf/apex31irr.htm
basically configure the report how you want it (as a Developer) and then save it as the default for all users.
If you mean something different, please elaborate
Hope this helps,
John.

ITunes Library between different users on Same Mac
Hi,
If I create multiple users, say one for me and one for my wife and probably another for a guest, How do I share the music library among all the users? I am a new Mac user and would appreciate your help.
Thank you
DineshiTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer describes two methods.
Each method has it's (dis)advantages.
Fast user switching enables listening to each others music, but iTunes of the acount you're listening to, has to be active.
By using this method, you can't mess up each others library.
Putting the music in a shared folder (second method) gives each user full access. If one user adds or deletes files, the others have to do the same.
Hope this helps.

Sharing files between different users on same computer
how do I go about sharing files between two users on the same computer?
also, what about iTunes, can I transfer songs between users, or do I have to pay for it everytime, even though it's on the same computer? You can control sharing of a user's itune library in the sharing preference. It is good for users on the same computer and the same local network (usually your house of small office).
As for files on another users folder, they have to either change the permissions of the parent folder (get info) or put the file to be shared into the public folder. -
What is the best way to share Address book between 5 Macs that are networked?
We have 5 Macs in the office, using 10.6.x or higher, and linked by a network. One Mac has the company database, and needs to be viewed and updated by the other users. What is the simplest way of doing this?
Oh, I meant Leopard does do more than Tiger Server.
I don't know enough about Server, even less abut Syncing.
SL is to new, not enough time to iron out the kinks yet imho.
One day SL will be better than Leo, but...
I'd ask over in server...

Or perhaps Collaboration Services...

They may even have a different opinion on SL. -
Share photo libraray between different users
Ok i go to Apple store and they were most helpful and i shouldve finished their solution prior to me leaving:
I have leopard and iLife 08
I have 2 users on a SR MBP i wanted to have one universal iphoto library between the two users ie if i or my wife adds pictures when i log on later and fire up iPhoto i will see the new photos
Apple store suggestion
1. copy (drag drop) iPhoto library to shared folder using finder (complete)
2. in users accounts start iPhoto and hold down option key and point to new shared library (complete in both accounts)
The photos show up as always in my wifes account (which was the primary iPhoto account previously) when i did the iPhoto/option button for my account it says something about updating thumbnails and pulls in all the events and correct number of photos in the proper locations. However it doesnt shown any pictures and when i try and open one all i get is a badly pixilated exclamation point.Erich
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an *external HD* set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up. -
Can I share iTunes library between different users on the same pc
I want to know if and how I can share an iTunes library with other user accounts on the same laptop? Can anyone help please.
Jim, sorry, I should have mentioned that permissions issue.
I have a similar setup on a Mac mini. I have the entire iTunes library in the shared folder and on each user account, I point it to that iTunes library file. That way there isn't a permissions problem when multiple accounts are connected to it.
The only problem with that is that each user account connected to that iTunes library can make changes to the library file (ratings, playlists, etc.) -
I'm doing some research for my boss concerning iCloud. He would like to setup a way to syncronize iCalender and the Address Book between three users but keep his personal information private. For example, he wants to be able to update his calender from his phone about an upcoming meeting/project so that the three computers at work are all updated and see upcoming events. Same goes for the contacts. If he adds a new contact or if I add a new contact, for a client or whoever it may be, he wants it to sync up for everyone. At the same time, if he adds a personal event to iCal such as, "Dinner with the girlfriend" or something irrelevant to work, he doesn't employees to be able to see that. My first idea was to setup an iCloud account but I'm wondering if you can even restrict certain things within an account.
Anyone have any other ideas? They would be greatly appreciated.iCloud appears to provide no Address Book sharing. You might be able to do this through Google, but it would be likely to be all contacts or none.
iCloud allows you to share calendars privately (editable if you wish) to other iCloud users or publicly (non-editable) to anyone - they would need a CalDAV client to read it, such as iCal or Google Calendars.
You share individual calendars, so private events should be in their own calendar which is not shared.
