I want to switch my SSD to another MacBook Pro

Hi,
I just received a Refurb i7 quad core UMBP.
I currently am using a 2009 UMBP with a SSD (yes, it's a non-apple SSD - but I use an app to turn on TRIM).
a)    So, since all my apps and files are on this SSD already, I want to simply remove it from the 2009 and replace the 500GB drive that came in my "new" Refurb.
BTW - i've built computers before, so assembly line work is easy.
I have the latest updates for Mavericks installed on the SSD.
I have a backup on my (USB) Time Machine.
I have a 2nd harddrive in the old optical bay (replacing the DVD drive). No, it is not setup as a Fusion Drive.
b)    And, yes - I am tempted to remove the optical drive and put in my other harddrive in it's place as I did with my 2009 UMBP. It has My Doc's & iTunes music (which won't fit on my 240GB SSD). Most likely I will do this within a couple days at most.
Is this going to cause problems because of the different hardware? i.e. hardware drivers, etc.?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Darren

Osborne, KayPro, and Amiga??
WOW! So cool man! That brings back memories from the 80's - when I wanted the 1st Gen Compaq. Wasn't it cool? I mean: take a desktop and put some shock absorbing suspension in it add a 5" green (later amber) monitor, a couple drives, and Bam! You're ready to conquer the world! Ha!
I was a kid in the early 80's and that computer just blew me away. I still want to own one...maybe someday I'll find one on eBay.
"Santa" brought me a Commodore Vic 32 and I learned very quickly that I didn't want to work 40 hours a week programming a computer (B.A.S.I.C.). But I've never lost my interest in all things technical. I have a good friend from those days who could (and can) read electronic schematics and tell me what parts are where on the IC board. I never learned that end of tech, but it was cool that he could do that. His father used to work for Xerox in the 70's (60's too?).
In high school another friend of mine had a KayPro (grey case like the Compaq but metal instead of white plastic...or was it an Osborne?) with a green monitor and we used to do science homework on it and print on a dot-matrix printer.
Thanks again for the advice.
God Bless

  • Help putting my old ssd into another macbook pro

My 2012 i5 unibody macbook pro was damaged and I replaced it with another 2012 i5 unibody macbook pro. Both are running the same version of OS X Yosemite. The ssd in the old laptop still works and is partitioned with windows 8. I want to remove the hd that came with my new mb pro and swap it out with my old ssd. Can I do this painlessly without having to reinstall anything or will this cause problems?

Based on the criteria that you described, a swap is all that is required.
    Ciao.

  • SSD in a Macbook pro

I want to put a ssd in my macbook pro 15in, do I need an OS X disk to do so, or can I just use my Time Machine Backups?

You could install a SSD however I think you will find they are extremely expensive per GB and they will continue to be so until they become more mainstream and manufacturing costs can come down. MacSales charges $579 for a 240GB model that will fit in a MBP, compared to the figure you quoted Apple seems to be pretty competitive. The only major advantages I can really see on SSD's are their startup times of the computer, applications and files. If you spend a lot of time opening apps and files then this might be of interest to you. If you don't then you would probably get much more benefit by getting a 7200 RPM HD. I've provided a link to MacSales so you can see for yourself.

  • Non-Apple SSD upgrade of MacBook Pro and trim enabling

    Hello.
I have a question about non-Apple SSD upgrade of MacBook Pro. I was planning to go and buy an SSD in a couple of days but  I have coincidentally come up with a web page mentioning trim enabling to extend SSD life on MacBook Pros. Actually the article suggested that if trim is not enabled, the SSD performance degradation will start very quickly due to a high number of writing and deletion of data to the same location on the SSD. Apple's original SSDs are really expensive, I checked that. Is there anyone who upgraded with a non-Apple SSD and did not enable trim and realize the SSD performance degradation? Is there anyone who could easily enable trim and is using his Mac efficiently with a non-Apple SSD? I will be glad if you could share your experiences. I really want to improve the speed of my Mid 2012 13 inch MBP but I have to be sure before doing that. I am also planning to buy a Samsung Evo 840 250 GB SSD.
    Regards and thanks in advance,
    Bugra

Yes you need to install and run TRIM Enabler after your OS X is installed or reverse cloned onto the GUID/OSX  extended Journaled formatted SSD from a external boot clone drive of the previous internal drive.
Also you need to run it after some OS X updates and of course upgrades, you'll notice the immediate performance drop if you don't.
It's available over at MacUpdate.com, you'll have to right or control/alt key click to "Open" it to bypass OS X Gatekeeper.
Read these user tips, you can clone your present internal drive to the new SSD using a SATA to USB adapter/Carbon Copy Cloner (not Superduper) and then reboot and hold option/alt key down on a wired keyboard to boot from it and test before making hardware switch.

He's knowledgable about exactly what your wanting to do.
Some drawbacks, you can't boot from any OS (OS X or Windows) installer disk from a external optical drive the Superdrive goes into when you install the kit.

  • Sound Switches Between Thunderbolt Display and MacBook Pro

I have an Apple Thunderbolt display and MacBook Pro set-up with dual screens. I have an iPhone plugged into a dock that runs to the display. When I have music playing out of the display and I disconnect my iPhone, it switches the sound to the MacBook Pro.
    1. How do I stop this from happening?
    2. If I can't stop it from happening, how do I move the sound from the MacBook Pro back to the display?
There doesn't seem to be any options within Preferences/Sound to change it back.
    Thank you.

I've a Spyder4Elite that I use on both my Thunderbolt Display and on my MBP - and, while both are calibrated, they don't - and cannot - 'match' one another, no matter how hard I try.
I suspect that you're running up against the same wall? Different technologies in different displays. I doubt that you'll ever get a perfect match: mine are just 'good enough'.

  • My time capsule was working and then I added another Macbook pro. TC stopped appearing in Airport Utilities. I have tried resetting TC, I have turned if off and held reset button with pen for 10 secs. I just cannot work out what else to do?

My time capsule was working and then I added another Macbook pro. TC stopped appearing in Airport Utilities. I have tried resetting TC, I have turned if off and held reset button with pen for >10 secs. I just cannot work out what else to do? I have turned router off and on. Amber light is flashing.

The ethernet says self assigned IP 169.254.67.6
Then the ethernet is not getting an IP from the TC.. there is no connection.
I am not sure where you mean when you say the green LED should be on. Do you mean the TC?
    Thanks
In order to help troubleshoot ethernet connections all routers use connectivity leds.. even APPLE.. it has one big LED on the front.. and 4 tiny leds beside each ethernet port. That light has to come on for ethernet to be active.. if you plug an ethernet cable into the port and the light doesn't come on.. then there is no connection.. either the other end isn't plugged in.. or the cable is bad.. or the ethernet port is bad.. something is wrong.
To get access to the TC you need this led to be green.. is it?
If it is green and the WAN is also green.. then I want you to unplug the WAN connection.. the blue wire in the picture.. the port slightly separated from the 3 LAN port.. computer plugged just into LAN port.. no airport turned on.. and press the reset again for 10sec until front led flashes rapidly.. then try and bring up the airport utility again.. assuming the ethernet led is green.
How old and what model is the TC?
The A number from the rubber mat will tell us the model.

  • I wanna buy an SSD for mid2012 macbook pro 13' i7! Help with sizes eh?

So I really wanna get an SSD for my macbook pro 13' mid2012 (not retina), and I know where I can get help to install it, but I dont know what dimensions of  the ssd has to be. I never use my dvd drive, and I saw somewhere you can replace it with and SSD or other hard drive. Now first question: Is the SATA cable to the dvd drive only 3.0Gbit/s or is it 6.0Gbit/s so an ssd could run on full speed?
And then dimensions, the ssd I have been looking at is the '
    'SSD 180GB Intel 520 OEM'
(link to my local computer shop: http://www.inet.se/produkt/4304354/ssd-180gb-intel-520-oem (swedish))
Now is it the right size or do I have to get some sort of converter or holder, or will it even fit at all?
If you know any good SSD's that are good, not toooo expensive and fits into my macbook pro, I would love to see them

Visit OWC for alternatives. You want one that supports 6.0 Gb/s SATA III. It should be a 2.5" notebook sized drive. At OWC look at their Mercury 6G models.

  • I want to update to LION,on my Macbook Pro duo core, (october 2006) because Adobe CC needs at least that. I know my computer is old, but works perfect to me and I do not want to stay in Adobe CS6 since I have access to Adobe Cloud CC. Please help.

I probably dont want to go to Mountain Lion either because I've heard that it will slow down my computer, So, Lion 10.7 will be the perfect OS X for me.
I have ne newest release of Snow Leopard installed and works great.
Thank you ALL for your help.

you will be ok updating to the new software but there will be some trade off. i have 3 macbooks 2006 that are all running the latest versions.
some of the trade off are
    1-2 less of battery life
    slow wake ups from sleep
slower start up time about 30-40 seconds longer then what you have now
the operating system will use high % of your processer while idealing
these are not the things you want to hear about a new os compared to the old one but this is how it is even with a new macbook pro. but it's not the end of the world. just make sure you have at least more then 2GB of ram and have a good harddrive and you will be ok.

  • SSD-problem with MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011)

    Hi there,
I've tried to use two different SSDs in my MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011). The first one (Samsung 840 Series, 500GB) crashed after two days: the beachball appeared and after a restart there was this question mark-symbol on my screen: no system found. Had to send this SSD back to Amazon. A few days later I've bought a new one, a SanDisk Extreme with 450GB. I've used it for two days, then my system crashed again and after a restart of my Mac I couldn't get any further than to the grey apple-symbol. Even the recovery partition didn't work anymore. Does anyone of you have the same problem with his (or her) MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011) - and any ideas for a solution?
    Thanks for your answers!

It may well be a driver issue but considering the loading: Xorg trying to load different drivers is somewhat normal. @cafe you can see that these are autoconfigured by X above the loading in the log:
    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 0
    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 1

    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 4
As long as one of the drivers gets loaded, which it apparently does the failing of the others is fine.
Was there an update maybe ?

  • I want to reinstall OS on my 2012 MacBook Pro. It shipped iwth 10.8, but now runs 10.9. Can I reinstall to 10.9, I do I have to reinstall 10.8 and upgrade again to 10.9?

I want to reinstall OS on my 2012 MacBook Pro. It shipped with 10.8, but now runs 10.9. Can I reinstall straight to 10.9, or do I have to reinstall 10.8 and upgrade again to 10.9?

Best to install 10.9 straight up. If you still have your OS 10.9 downloaded file you can use that, or you can go to the app store and download it again. It will be in your previous purchase history. Or you could even upgrade to 10.10. If you want to start from scratch you will need to boot from USB or DVD and initialise (erase) your internal HD. To do create a bootable USB thumb drive with OS 10.9 or 10.10 follow this guide
Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support
And heres a how to on installing a fresh copy of Yosemite (OS X 10.10)

    No and Yes
Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard.

Ideally, you should clone your HD as Bimmer 7 Series explains.
However, if your computer originally shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, a clone is not necessary to merely reinstall OS X. OS X Internet Recovery will create a recovery partition, download the installer package, and install it on a completely empty SSD or HD.
Even if your computer shipped with Snow Leopard, it may be eligible to download a firmware update that creates the same ability: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904
