I want to sync my folders, not replace them

I work across multiple drives and sometimes there are saved things on my main drive that are not on my back up. ie: I have a folder named "Job 30" on my main drive and on my back up and my back up has a lot of the pieces my main drive does, just not everything. Instead of copying and replacing the entire folder on the backup with all 57 gigs from the main, I only need to update it with the few MBs of the new content.
Is there a way to sync the folder so it will find the new info rather than having to wait for it to recopy everything?
Thanks,
Jessica

  • I want to sync my contacts without duplicating them with OS 10.6.8

I have a problem. It seems that I cannot duplicate my contacts without duplicating them. What makes matters worse is that I am using OS 10.6.8, and the Icloud has never worked properly for me. I always wind up loosing the the ability to sync my calendar.
At this time, I cannot up grade my OS with incurring the loss of programs I use everyday for my business due to incompatability issues.
When ever I sync my contacts, they duplicate. I want to sync them, but I don't want to spend hours deleting the duplicates.
Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks so much!!
    All best-

use Migration Assistant and everything would work.  But it didn't transfer any of my applications.
Just to be clear - you said "Migration Assistant", but did you really use "Migration Assistant" or rather "Setup Assistant"? When setting up a new Mac, you will be prompted after installing the system to transfer your data - and that would be the Setup Assistant. if you first create your account, and then transfer, you will be using "Migration Assistant". The  "Setup Assistant" is greatly preferable, since it will keep the identity of the user account.
But it didn't transfer any of my applications.
The Setup Assistant or Migration Asistant lets you choose what to transfer. DId you enable to transfer your applications?
Is your old mac a Power PC? If your applications are still PowerPC applications, they cannot run on a Mavericks system.  Try to update as many of your applications as possible to universal binary versions, that can run on Intel macs, before you migrate them to your new Mac.  Aperture 3.1.2 will not still not run on Mavericks, even if it is a univaersal binary, but if you get it transferred and installed on your new Mac, you can update it to 3.5.1.
And before transferring your Aperture library, repair it using the First Aid Tools. See the Aperture Release Notes http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518

  • I want to sync my old notes to my mac

I have notes on my Mac with Mountain Lion. I have notes on my iphone 4s. I accidentally hit the "Cancel" button when it prompted me to setup a @me.com email address when I was configuring mountain lion for the first time. Now I have all of these notes that are on my iPhone that won't sync to my mac. I got Sync working, but the notes are all in a folder that is NOT my iCloud folder. How do I get them to sync? I've checked a handful of forums and it appears that I can't access this directly through iTunes as the option is not there.
Any help would be appreciated, I really don't want to result to Copy/Paste as I have a LOT of notes. I use this feature all the time.

    Same problem here.
Notes on my iPhone but will not sync to my macbook
new notes however now do now sync between the iphone and macbook
I do not have a notes picture in my macmail, (Sure I used to before upgrading to ML)  or any mention of notes in preferences pane/Mail/Accounts
Mailbox behaviours or advnced or in composing in macmail
just would like to get old notes back to my mackbook without copy pasting them again.
(Well suppose could have a lazy day)

  • Don't want to sync Address Book "Note:" field

Does anyone know how customize the syncing of Contacts from Address Book so that everything but the "Note:" field is synced?
FYI, I'm syncing to a Palm Treo 700p (Verizon Wireless).
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's not possible to change the conduit field content and label mapping in the iSync Palm Conduit to include additional fields or exclude the Note: field. There is no provision to turn include or exclude data globally, or on a record by record basis.
While you still do not get all of those options with the Missing Sync for Palm OS with the Mark/Space Contacts conduit, you get far better support for categories and groups, contact photographs or icons, additional address fields, a URL and IM address, and more telephone numbers and electronic mail addresses:

  • HT204053 how do i keep my kids messaging from being sent to my ipad.  i want to sync my devices not theirs

i want icloud for only my ipad, mac and iphone.  I keep getting my kids downloads, messages, pics etc.  I thought i had set it up so only my 3 devices are tied in but still get everyones.

They must have their devices set to connect to your icloud account.  that's the only way they can get your data and you can get their data.  Be sure they have their own icloud accounts (IDs).

  • Adding to contents of a folder, not replacing them

    Hi,
Is there a way in the Finder (or a program I can use) that I can add files to the contents of a folder with the same name rather than the usual delete and replace all the contents?
In other words, when I drag a folder with the same name into the same location as a folder with the same name, can I update the target folder's contents with the source folder's contents?
    Any advice appreciate,
    Thanks
    osu

No. Doing this will replace the old folder with the new folder and all its differences. You need to open both folders, select all (command-A) in the one you want to copy from, and drag the contents into the other folder.

  • Ipad un sync photos does not remove them

I have tried to delete my synced photos by unchecking the sync photo box on my mac. I have hit the remove photos box that comes after.
All the photos are still on the ipad.
I do not use the cloud and do not use match.
I did delete the camera roll ones but the synced ones are being stubborn.
I have tried to do everything I could find on this forum to make them go away with no success.

  • Does sync combine bookmarks or replace them?

Before I set up sync in Firefox 4 I want to be sure I understand what will happen. Say, for example, my desktop computer has bookmarks A, B, C, D, E. I set up sync on this computer, then add a second computer, which has bookmarks D, E, F, G. After syncing will both computers have bookmarks A, B, C, D, E, F, and G? Or will the main computer's bookmarks be copied to the added computer, resulting in the loss of bookmarks F and G?

when i sync i had lots of saves book marks ..i did not get any of them why this happen

The apps that you had will be listed in your purchase history if you login to your account in iTunes on your computer - the list isn't very user friendly though as it's listed by date order and will include all app updates that you've downloaded (so an app will appear multiple times if you've downloaded it's updates). You can re-download apps, though it's a manual process as you need to find them yourself in the app store : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 .
If the apps are in your iTunes library then the restore might work - a backup contains app data/settings, but not the app itself, so without the app available to it the restore can't install the app and therefore it's content.

  • I lost all my music from my ipod when syncing and do not have them backed up. I have the purchase list from apple, how can I get that music?

I lost all my music that I purchased from Itunes. I would like to know how to get all the music that is purchased back? I do not have anything backed up but I have the invoices for all the songs.

  • First Time Discussion User - My photos are gone and I can not replace them?

I had been working along fairly well. The Apple TV was being synchronized with a file on my XP PC when I brought up I Tunes (that's another problem). I was loosing too much of the picture when looking at my photos. I thought that I had made an error in the set up that told the Apple TV to expand the picture to fill the screen. I thought maybe this was causing the photos to be cropped.
Anyhow, I went into the setup area of the Apple TV and tried a lot of areas. Nothing sounded like it fixed the problem. Somehow in this exploration of the menues, I deleted all of my pictures on the Apple TV. So I went to iTunes on the PC to resynch the photos. Somehow the iTunes lost track of the Apple TV.
I used the help to lookup how to reestablish contact. I received some sort of message that said that I had a problem with a firewall. I don't think that I changed anything since it worked last.
I'm about ready to give up. Apple TV and iTunes are not useable by a Windows person.
Does anyone have a suggeston better than - "Try a different solution."?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • I want Safari to download PDFs, not open them in the browser

The subject line pretty much sums it up Whenever I try to download a PDF it opens it up in Safari instead.
If I open Safari > Preferences > General I can see that the box for "+Open 'safe' files after downloading+" is checked. It also says "Save Downloaded Files to" - and "Downloads" is selected.
Is there anything that I'm missing? In Firefox if I click on a link for a PDF file then it opens straight away. I've searched the archives on this forum and don't seem to be coming up with anything that works for me.
    Thanks for your help!

  • I have changed computers and installed iTunes on my new computer. I want to sync my iphone now but the "sync" program indicates that it will remove all data on my phone and replace it with the newly installed itunes that does not have my information.

I have a new computer and have installed iTunes on it.
Now I want to sync my iphone but the new itunes on the new computer wants to remove everything on my niphone and replace it with what's on the newly installed itunes data but it does not have my data.
How can I sync the new itunes with my iphone and not have my phone data wiped out?
    Thanks,

There is no way to stop iTunes from doing exactly what it is designed to do.
The iPhone is designed to sync with one and only one computer.
If you have moved/copied your iTunes library from your old computer to your new one, then iTunes wiping your device is no problem.  You would simply sync and iTunes will put all the content back.

  • When i go to sync my apps with my computer it tells me  ''are you sure you want to sync apps ? all exsisting apps and there data on (iphone) will be replaced with the apps on this itunes library'' does this mean all my data will be lost if i continue ?

Regarding your broken, previously authorized computer, here's how that works:
You would authorize your new computer -- maybe you've done that already.  Then you will have two computers authorized.  Apple allows you to have up to five computers authorized at any time.  If you get to five, you can then go to your account details in iTunes and remove all authorizations.
Bear in mind this is not saying you can synch to more tham one library.  Razmee209 and gdgmacguy's comments above are correct.  But if Apple only allowed you to authorize one computer at a time, then having a broken computer would mean you could no longer use your Apple ID with iTunes.
