I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

Sure.. the PC connects by SMB.. the Mac connects by AFP or SMB..
But you can simply share SMB directly from the Mac.. there is no need to copy files through the TC. Go to system preference, sharing, and turn on SMB for the folder you want to share files to / from on the Mac.
Make sure you have a common username and password also helps.
If you have a TC already can you copy files to it via the windows machine??

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.
This one is on sale for $16 http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2S/

Make sure your iMac is on 10.6.8 or higher and your iTunes is up to date.  If it is, then restart your computer, open iTunes, then plug in your device.  If it still is not showing up, follow the steps listed here: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X

  • HT4889 Transfer files from a hard drive to a new mac?

Currently, I have a 2012 Macbook pro. I love it, but its kinda slow for me. When I bought my Mac, I didn't realize how much I would use it, so I bought the cheapest 15 inch in from 2012 (2.3GHz 4GB RAM 500GB HD) Now, I'm upgrading to a 15inch Retina Macbook Pro with 2.0 GHz 8GB RAM and a 512Gb HD. A local electronics store said that they will buy my mac for $950 from me, and I said yes. Then, I hooked up a 1TB Hard Drive and let time machine work it's magic.
When I go to buy my new mac, what will I need to do to transfer all of the files from the hard drive?
Also, I have over 150 movies in iTunes that are ripped dvds and 2000 songs from CDs, and I added info and artwork for all of them. Will they all still be formatted with artwork and info when I import them into iTunes on a new mac?
Lastly, will I see a huge power boost in the retina Macbook pro with 8gb RAM and a 2.0GHz processor? or should I save up some more money for the 16GB RAM and 2.3GHz Processor? I'm going to college in a year, so I do tons of email/safari-ing, word processing, itunes playing, and downloading, usually at the same time. A usual day for me consists of writing a document in pages or microsoft word, while listning to music from iTunes, with safari open with multiple tabs, and something downloading to my mac. Thank you for the help, it's tremendously appriciated.

When you first start up the new Mac you will be asked to enter personal information, etc. At some point you will be asked if you want to transfer files from another source, including Time Machine back up. Make sure your back is connected, and just follow the directions on the screen.
All formatting etc. will be intact, since TM makes sure it is.
As for perfomance, the biggest performance boost would be a solid state drive. Have you looked at that option?
And one of the more prevalent reasons for perfomance hit is an over-stuffed start up drive. Mac OS X needs empty space on the start up disk to do its tasks, make sure you give it enough. Take a look at this: http://macs.about.com/od/faq1/f/How-Much-Free-Drive-Space-Do-I-Need.htm

How do I transfer files from an external hard drive to my mac book pro?

What files are they? Is it a clone, a TM backup, or simply drag 'n drop?
If it's the latter, simply drag them back. If something else, please post back with detailed info.

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • I want to transfer files from my Mac Pro top Mac Air. i'M WRITING A BOOK SO I WANT TO MAKE SURE IT, WHICH IS ON PAGES, COMES ALONG AND IS IN TACT. iS THIS HARD TO DO FOR A SLIGHTLY ELDERLY PERSON WHO WANTS IT DONE RIGHT AND SO THAT I CAN GET TO WORK

I am buying an Apple Air and want to transfer files including a book I am writing on Pages.
I am not very tech savy. I have been told, however, by a number of friends I can save $1000 and do this myself.
I don't mind giving it a whirl, but i don';t want to loose anything in the transfer, And, I was hoping this was a fairly quick, fool-proof, process.
I have looked into this a bit and was wondering if I need two (2) Ethernet cables? That is,one from the Mac Pro to the Ethernet and one from the Apple Air to the Ethernet? Or, is it one just one cable to the Ethernet? And, if so, from the Apple Pro or the Apple Air to the Ehternet?
I'm assuming a dsiplay box appears on either or both of the notebooks? Perhaps prompting you to transfer everthing you have on the Apple Pro hard drive to the
the Apple Air hard drive? Or, to selection files? Dumb question: I assume my book, which is written on Pages is on The Apprle Pro hard drive? Correct? Or is it on a file folder separately?
I appreciate any feedback yuou may have.
Again, is it striaghtforward and easy to accomplish?
    Thanks,
    -Larry

    The following may help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872
Note that the MacBook Air does not have an ethernet port so you can either use wi-fi if you have that, or you can buy an ethernet adpater such as: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC704ZM/A/apple-usb-ethernet-adapter or you could use an external disk.
Also, if you took it to a local shop that specializes in Macs the cost shouldn't be anywhere near $1000 for them to assist. More like $100 and could even be free if they sell Macs and you buy the new one there.

  • Transfer files from old macbook pro to new macbook pro using mavericks

I have called Apple support about 5 times about this and have been given 3 or 4 different response none of them work.
I do not have an ethernet cable.
The computers are on same network.
I have time capsule not yet set up.  Apple support told me to use usb but no port on new mac. So old mac is running OSX 10.8.5 and new one is Maverick.  I cannot update files on old computer as I just get this message to sign in to my acount that used to buy old apps.I am 1.5 hours away from apple store so if i needed special cable from Apple i would have purchased it with Time Capsule.  I was told that to do it wirelessly would take over a day.
Right now am puzzling over what is best to do without losing files.  I dont want to lost my music files as I have had them for a long time and all were not purchased from itunes store.
Any thoughts on where to start feel free to suggest them.
    Thanks Jan

    Just one comment on this:
‘If I have, say, an older version of iPhoto but a newer version of one on my new Macbook Pro, will it still transfer photos no problem?’
the problems are ALWAYS in the reverse way, when you have the newest (or a newer) version of a given app, and wish to transfer its library to an older version.
Otherwise, see the link to Pondini.
I have been using Martin Jahn’s iBackup, with which I have become accustomed and works fine. It also makes daily backups. Its advantage over other apps is that you may add whatever you wish to save, beside its default settings (which you may delete or cancel, of course, even if not recommended); it also has a friendly interface and easily customizable. Of course, this is a personal view, you may try other methods as well, or other backup apps. All are good if you are satisfied and correspond to your needs.

  • How to best transfer files from G3 B&W rev2 to my mac pro

    Hi,
My souped up yet tired G3 went a little nutty(unresponsive) so i finally upgraded to the macpro. i have a few questions to ask:
    1. how do i go about transfering my files (docs, movies and pics) from the G3 to my macpro? i have read a few options but i wanted to get some input.
    2. can i install the PATA 30gb 7200rpm seagate drive in my G3 to the optical bay in the macpro?
    thanks

You're right. You can't use migration assistant as, although your B&W has a firewire port, it doesn't support firewire target disk mode.
You probably can remove your PATA drive from the G3 and connect it to the ATA bus serving the superdrive. Set the jumper to "cable select" and you ought to be able to use migration assistant. I'd only transfer files and settings, though. No applications.

  • I have a new iPhone. I want to transfer Notes from an iPod Touch 3 to my iPhone using iCloud but I can't get anywhere. Help.

I have a new iPhone and I want to transfer my Notes from an iPod Touch 3. I've tried using iCloud but can't get anywhere. Help.

Since you have purchased a new Mac (which, BTW, is not typed in all capitals) why not buy a Time Capsule <http://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/> which is designed specifically to work with OS X and Time Machine?
You don't say what part of your Sony "crashed." If it was not the HDD it is possible to take the computer apart, put the HDD in an external case, then recover the data off of it (including the music) simply drag-n-drop. If it was the HDD that "crashed" that makes it more difficult.
If you are able to recover the music from the Sony you can then add it to the iTunes library on the Mac and iTunes Match will then scan, match and upload the tracks to be mirrored in the cloud.
