I want to transfer my music from my iPod to my external hard drive

I have a 60G colour ipod and it is displaying the unhappy symbol. I dont have my itunes library backed up to my laptop as it only has 18G memory I have recently purchased a 250G external hard drive is there any way of downloading my music from my ipod directly to my external hard drive ?

There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to your computer posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • How to I transfer my music from my ipod to the new hard drive?

My windows laptop crashed two months ago and I lost everything on it.  I was able to get the hard drive replaced but all of my music is on my ipod (nano - 2nd edition, I think).  Only a small percentage is purchased via itunes.
I have been googling how to now move my music from my ipod to my new hard drive but most solutions assume that I still have the old laptop/hard drive.  I know I was able to do this previously when the hard drive crashed, but I can't seem to remember now as it was about 5 years ago.  I'm afraid to do anything just now as I don't want it syncing to an empty library and have my ipod wiped clean.
Is there any way of moving the music from my ipod to my itunes library on the new hard drive??  Please help as I don't want to have to reload over 100 cd's

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.

  • My old computer no longer works.  I want to transfer my music from my Ipod to itunes on my laptop, but now mix it with my wife's music.  How do I do that?

My old Gateway is dead.  I have saved my 20 gigs of ipod music on an external hard drive.
On our Dell laptop, my wife has itunes music installed.  I want to add my music and use itunes to add more, etc., but I want to keep it separate from her music.
First, how can I transfer my music from the external hard drive to itunes, without it affecting her itunes.  Do I  need to set up multiple itunes with separate names, or, as support mentioned, make two playlists.
If it's the playlist version, how do I make a playlist with my 20 gigs of ipod music?  Thanks, Hup42

    Hey Hup42,
Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, the best option may be to operate multiple user accounts on your Wife’s computer. The following article outlines this solution, along with another solution of having multiple iTunes libraries:

    Create multiple user accounts
Do you share your computer with someone who has different tastes in music and media? You can create separate user accounts for each person who uses the computer. You can maintain separate, personalized iTunes libraries and customize each devices' sync settings accordingly.

    - OS X Mountain Lion v10.8
    - OS X Lion v10.7
    - Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard
    Windows users
Look in your computer's Help documentation to learn how to set up other user accounts. To find this information:
    1. Click the Start Menu and click Help or Help and Support.
    2. Enter "new user" in the Search field.
    3. Press Return.
If you create multiple user accounts on one computer but want the same media to be available in iTunes for all users, you can share music between different accounts on a single computer.

  • How do I transfer downloaded movies from my iMac to my external hard drive?

    Hi folks
I am trying to transfer movies downloaded to my iMac 7 on to my external hard drive. How do I go about this. Many thanks in advance

No not an error message. Whilst I am transferring the document there is "o" with a strike through it and this symbol is carried along with the file that I am transferring (if ya know what I mean). It may actually be my actual hard drive. For example,  I tried to rename the hard drive and right clicked on it and went to the "get info" tab and,  where I should be able to change the title of the hard drive,  it is greyed out and cannot change the name.
But I am more concerned with transferring files to my hard drive to be honest.
    Thanks

  • Is it possible to do a direct transfer of photos from iphone 4s to ax external hard drive?

I would like to be able to free up space on an iphone 4s. Too many photos on there to be stored on icloud.  I was thinking of buying and external hard drive to store the photos onto.  Is it possible to do it directly without using a computer?  If so is one hard drive better than any other? Any replies in simple english, as I am not a tech savvy, would be very apprecitated.

In general, most external hard drives out there do not support what you need to do what you want.  I have read about a very few which support connecting to them via wifi, but I do not know if they will work for what you want.  The iPhone (or iPad for that matter) does not support transferring pictures other than via sync or via iCloud.  You may be able to get it to work using something ele, but it will be kludgy and might not work after the next iOS update.  THis is probably not what you are looking for in the long term.

  • HT1329 I have imported music files on my iPod Classic which I don't have on my old PC as it had less capacity than the iPod. I now have a new PC and want to transfer the music from the iPod to my new PC so that I have back ups. How can I do this?

How do I move music imported from my old CD collection onto my iPod, which I did not retain on my old PC as there was not enough memory. I no longer have all the CDs so cannot import them to my new PC, so want to copy them directly off my iPod Classic to my new PC.
    How do I do that?
    Thanks

You cannot do it (transfer song files from iPod to computer) using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download previous purchases using the iTunes Store Purchased screen).
However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can be used to transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your new computer's hard drive, drag them (or the folder containing the files) to the iTunes window to add them to your new computer's iTunes library.

  • I want to transfer my music FROM my IPOD TO my computer /reverse backup

My old computer had my original Itunes music library. This computer is now lost, blown away. I did not back up my Itunes music. The music is all sitting on my IPOD Nano, I want to transfer all the music residing on my Nano (4gb) back to my newly installed computer running newly installed Itunes.
If effect, this is a reverse backup from Ipod to computer. This has got to be doable?

    Oppene...
Did you ever figure this out? My PC just bit the dust and I now have a new one. I do have all the backup music for my IPOD, but would like to put it back in the ITUNES library so I can maneuver.

  • How to sync my music from my ipod with my new hard drive without any lose my music on my ipod?

Bonjour, hi, I have a question. My hard drive broke and I lost all my music when I reconnect my iPod, iTunes tells me that if I sync with my ipod, I lost all the music on my ipod ... and replace my music with the music on iTunes (I have no music on iTunes). What can i do?
    Thanks you.

Restore the media on the new computer using the backup of your media from your old computer.
The iPod, like all iDevices is not a storage device, it is merely a mirror of the content in your iTunes library.
    If not backup exists:
On the new computer, sign into your iTunes account and Authorize the computer.
Cconnect the iPod but do not sync.
    Select File > Transfer purchases.
Any media not purchased from iTunes or ripped from CD's will be lost, but at least you will retain your iTunes purchases.

  • HT1329 Hi All - My hard drive failed and I am trying to move all my music from my ipod to the new hard drive. I am operating on Win 7 64 bit. Can anyone help please?

    Hi All,
My hard drive crashed and is no longer usable. I just installed a new drive however, I am not finding any way to export my recorded CD's from the Ipod touch to the new hard drive. Can anyone help please? I thought by enabling syc with Ipod woudl do it but to no avail.
    Thanks

I used a 3rd party program called copytrans http://www.copytrans.net/ that is not free to move my library from my ipod to my itunes library when I had to start from scratch.  After that happened I started backing up my music that purchased from the itunes store to a dvd so I would always have it if things went south.  Now I always backup my purchased digital music to an optical disc just in case plus everythng else I have is on retail cd's so I can just rebuild my library from scratch again if I have to.  You should also regularly back up your itunes media folder to another disc so your entire library will be backed up just in case you should lose your program drive.
