Whatsapp is not available for iPad, even if you do update.
However, if you still want to update and assuming you have iOS 4.3 as your tag line suggests. You'll need to connect your iPad to a Computer running iTunes (Can be a Mac or a Pc doesn't matter) and follow the update prompts.

Also depending on what generation iPad you have you may only be able to update as far as iOS 5.1.
If your iPad does not have camera its a first generation iPad, and can only be updated to iOS 5.1.

What application were you syncing your contact to before you updated? Check the settings on the info tab and sync them back.
If you were NOT syncing them to an application (Outlook or Windows Address Book on a PC, Address Book on a Mac), you can try forcing a restore from your backup again. If they don't come back, they are most likely gone.

If you areupdating your idevice nothing will be deleted the i know of. I have updated my iPhone 5 to the lastest IOS 7.0.4 and everthing that i had on my iPhone 5 is still there, Just got all the awesome IOS7 features,

The iPad 1 can't run the newer operating systems. It'd be like trying to play a bluray disc in your 6 year old dvd player....it simply lacks the hardware to make the software run.
No suggestion about the camera, but given that Apple's attitude seems to be to focus more on the more mobile devices for photography (the iPhone and Touch cameras got features, the iPad and mini didn't), that is highly unlikely. You can tell Apple what you want, but you'd probably be money ahead to get a digital camera.
as to the photos, anything put on via iTunes has to come off via iTunes.Your main alternative would be to look for photo apps that offer file exchange that may give you more functionality.

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when trying to perform an update. I recommend trying to update using iTunes, and as always, it is a good idea to make a backup first.

HT201210 I received a pop up asking if I wanted to update my software. I accepted and the (long) process started. Then the update "crashed" and I was told an unknown error had occurred.

I received a 'pop up' asking if I wanted to update the software in my iPhone. As I always accept these messages to keep my phone up-to-date, I accepted.
A long (25minute) process started, but at the end of it, the process "crashed" saying an unknown error had been encountered!.NOTHING has changed with my computer of my iPhone, so I say this is an Apple problem. I cannot start or use my phone now - all that shows on the screen is the iTunes logo and a connectivity graphic - see attached photo

Open itunes, plug in ipod. it sbhould tell you there is an update.
If not then click check for updates.

Then you will need to try restoring it once more:

Sorry, but I don't believe you can. The iOS updates are almost always too large for the limits put on downloads over a cell network. If your WiFi isn't working and you can't get to a place, such as an Apple Store, where it will work, you'll need to update through iTunes on your computer. i want to update my software version to 6.1.3.. but i have never updated this before and this is my first time.. im having 20 GB apps and music in my ipod. so when i click 'update and download' tab it starts downloading the new version and upgrading,... but afetr some time it says im having a very low memory in c drive and i would have to stop the upgrading...
can i use my external hard to save this download and upgrading files without using my c drive? plz give me a solution as im only having only 7GB of space left in the C drive

I would rather you delete/move other files to the external HD rather than downloading the update file to the external HD.
First try going here and delete any update files to regain C drive space.

Also, make sure that you have emptied your computer's recycle bin
You can try the manual update/restore method included here and download the file to the external HD

I recently updated my software ios 6.0 and all of the sudden i get facebook and twitter notifications coming in but its not making a sound. This is really upsetting because i'll never know if i get one unless i go and acually look... Okay so my push notifications arent making sounds at all... ;( Any help? OCD with good reason
With a second backup, as you now have, you are well protected. The update makes a backup to use for restoring after the install but with another you should be in great shape.
Just take you time and be patient, these can take a while to complete depending on server load, connection speed, etc.
